Visual Evaluation Mary Chu
At the beginning of the visual journal,I didn’t know what to explore,so I started with makeup and costumes. But I didn’t like it because they looked a bit too plain. So I decided to add some colours in another piece to see how’s the colouring affect the piece. <<Before colouring
After colouring. Definitely the colours made the image looks better, also because of the colours you can tell which is the focus point on the image.
Then I tried to tape the faces on, and see which one is better, the let the face blank one or the tape one. I personally think the blank face one works better because the tape one looks too busy, it’s hard to tell do I want to focus on the face or the body, or poses.
I have also tried the ink method, but I don’t think they worked,I have tried to put more focus on the costumes, but I think the lines are a bit to rough, and unclear. The line experiment is simple, but lack of details.
Comparison with 2 different tone of voice.I had some useful feedbacks said the comparison image it’s good, because they tell how different culture focus on what things, for example: the Asian one focus on details, whereas the Western one focus on playful tone of voice.
These pencil studies look a bit rough again, which I don’t like this. But as an experiment, I think this has developed a faster and less details on the image.
This picture I took in 2009, I couldn’t believe that is actually helping me to write an essay about cosplay.
I have tried to scale up to a double page spread, to create a different effect from the small scales.
Besides drawing female cosplayers, I have drawn some male cosplayers as well. But the number of photographers were a lot less than the female cosplayers. I think the black lines with colours is the best way to explore in the visual journal.Simple and colourful context could catch people’s eye, also people will understand which and where are the focus point that I want to communicate with.
