Auburn Gets a Drive-thru Panera By Jamie Blumrick, Editor-in-chief

When driving down Grant Avenue in Auburn, you may notice something has been added to the long line of fast food, drive through, sit in eateries: a Panera Bread! Many know of it’s deliciousness, but for those who don’t, they offer a nice sit down atmosphere where you can order custom made sandwiches, soups, smoothies, etc., along with their fresh daily baked bread. Panera also lists the total amount of calories and ingredients for all the items on their menus, so no secrets. So for the calorie watcher, and those that are allergic, even vegetarian, they have special options just for you. Even if you’re in a rush you can get anything on their menu though their drive through, a first for Panera’s in Central New York, as well! So what do they do with all of their unsold bread at the end of the day? They donate it to help out those in need, just another wonderful thing Panera offers to Auburn. Panera will also be opening a second store in the Carousel Mall in Syracuse, which will offer even more to the food court for sit down restaurant options. So if you haven’t tried tried Panera yet you simply knead to! Panera’s store hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Clsoing time on Sundays is at 9 p.m.

After years of the Fulton campus being the underdog of education, the college has finally announced its plans to move its current 50,000-square-foot campus in the Fulton Commons into the former P&C Foods building at River Glen Plaza by the fall of 2012. The college is buying the larger property from JHMPAC Inc. for $950,0000. The state has already committed to funding half of the $11.3 million dollars to renovate the building into a larger, more sufficient college campus while Cayuga County will bond for the balance of the project so there will be no extra expense to local taxpayers. The new 20-acre campus, at the intersection of routes 481 and 57, will provide 71,000 square feet of space and the potential for the college to add 20,000 more square feet of adjoining storefront space. The college is even considering buying the 40 acres across from the land to use for athletic fields. “We need the room because our enrollment is growing immensely in Fulton … and we’re basically in a strip mall,’’ said John Camardo, president of Cayuga Community College’s board of trustees. Inside the new building area

will be 21 general classrooms, five dedicated computer labs, two rooms that could be computer/classrooms, two art rooms, two science labs for biology and chemistry, two conference rooms with the capability for distance learning, a library, a health suite, offices and a student support area made up of financial aid, bursar and admissions services. Cayuga Community College needs the room to accommodate for a growing student population considering enrollment has increased by more than 1,000 students since 2006. “We need to look out for our students. That’s our number one priority. We need to make sure it’s an affordable education,’’ Camardo said. Therefore tuition rates shall remain the same for upcoming students. Whether students transfer or study for their career, the Fulton campus has helped thousands of students from Oswego and neighboring counties achieve their goals for higher education and will continue this for years to come. The construction of the new building will begin in April 2012 and will take about 13 months to complete, students should be able to use the new site for classes in fall 2013.

Don’t Forget To Lock Up!

By Kate Morley, Staff Writer

Chief William Marventano, Cayuga Community College’s head of security, sent out an email to both students and faculty members on September 16th forewarning about vehicle larcenies. Even though he says this had not been a major issue at Cayuga to this point, it has been a growing problem at many other colleges. As you are on your way to class always double check to make sure vehicle doors are locked, and that sun roofs and windows are closed. NEVER leave anything lying in plain sight such as purses, laptops, IPods or even personal clothing.

Cayuga Community College is not responsible for any stolen objects, Marventano’s best advice is “if it is valuable leave it home.” If anyone witnesses a larceny in progress or any suspicious acts, call 911 immediately or contact the Office of Public Safety which is located right on campus. Marventano says it only takes a little effort to defend against these types of actions.

Steam Sets Off Alarm Classes at the Auburn Campus were interrupted for about 20 minutes, Tuesday, September 20th, beginning at 2 P.M. when a fire alarm was reportedly triggered by steam generated in an Organic Chemistry Lab.
