Recommended Reading Heart of the Redeemer by Timothy T. O'Donnell, STD Available through Ignatius Press
Years of careful research have produced a one volume synthesis of how the devotion to the Heart of Jesus has developed over the centuries. The result is a moving overview of how the love for Jesus Christ has grown in the hearts of the faithful from Calvary to the present day.
"I firmly believe that the spirituality fostered by this devotion can best meet the spiritual needs of our age. It is a practical form of spirituality which emphasizes 'famlliaritas cum Christo' and therefore is marvelously suited to aid priest, religious and laity alike in their journey of growth in holiness. If practiced in the family, devotion to the Heart of Jesus may greatly help to counter those pagan elements of culture which all too often work their way into the sanctuary of the home." Timothy T. Â O'Donnell, S.T.D. --from the Introduction
Heart of Christ Heart of Dominic Though formal devotion to the Sacred Heart was developed more fully in later Church history, St. Dominic was ever devoted to the heart of Jesus as the fount of all his apostolic charity. A priest who had heard St. Dominic preach eloquently on Scripture asked him in what book he most studied more than any other. St. Dominic answered, "In the Book of Charity" (Lives of the Brethren, XXV). Christ's heart, especially as revealed on the Cross, was that open book in which Dominic read all the "treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col 2:3). Studying Jesus' heart from the foot of the cross, St. Dominic discovered how deeply he was loved by God and how deeply God wanted him to bring others to experience this saving love. In her Dialogue, God the Father revealed to St. Catherine of Siena the mission He had given to St. Dominic: "At what table does he feed his sons...? At the table of the cross, which is the table of holy desire... there to seek the glory and praise of My name alone, and the salvation of souls" ("A Treatise on Obedience," 5). Down through the centuries, Dominicans have thus approached the pierced heart of Christ as both the subject and the sustenance of their preaching mission.
Because the Novitiate is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, the other Sisters help them celebrate this feast by making special treats for them and decorating their places in the refectory.
