Internship Program Summer 2015 Introduction

The impact on a girl’s future when she is exposed to a mentor is unparalleled. At this juncture in their development and in their lives, it is critical for girls to be encouraged by leaders, having experience in “real world” settings as they seek to discover their unique interests. The Program

Marymount will offer a number of internships in several different fields, ranging from Neuroscience to the Law and Urban Ecology to Art Conservation, in sites throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Internship opportunities are available to students who want to focus on a particular area of interest during the summer with hands-on learning, and access to professionals are at the center of this experience.

science & medicine UCLA Medical School: Department of Neurology

Mentor: Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl (mother of Carmen Voskuhl ‘17)

Overview: Dr. Voskuhl is an internationally recognized expert in translation of basic research to clinical trials for Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Voskuhl is a Professor in the UCLA Department of Neurology, Director of the MS Program at UCLA and the Jack Skirball Chair in MS research.

Responsibilities: Conducting basic research in Dr. Voskuhl’s lab including neuropathology, neuroimmunology and genetic manipulations. Participants will experiment with new drugs as treatments in MS models, and will have exposure to novel MS clinical trials based on basic research in the Voskuhl lab. Students will also participate in the MS patient care clinic. Time Frame: July 1 - July 24 # of Positions: 2 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

UCLA Medical School: Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care

Mentor: Dr. Chris Cooper (father of Clare Cooper ‘17)

Overview: Dr. Cooper is Professor of Medicine and Physiology in the UCLA Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and Director of the UCLA Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory. Responsibilities: Working in a medical research laboratory where studies are being conducted (using human subjects) in order to determine the most effective ways to treat pulmonary disease and to address lung function in different environments. Students will work directly with other interns, undergraduate and graduate medical students as well as Fellows involved with work in Dr. Cooper’s lab. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with Dr. Cooper but are likely to be from mid-June to mid-July. Overview: Dr. Economou is Vice Chancellor for Research at UCLA and sponsors summer internships for high school and college students in UCLA science laboratories. Responsibilities: TBD

Requirements: Participants must have completed multiple science courses including AP Biology and Honors Chemistry and also have an interest in medicine and research. Other prerequisites can include prior internships. UCLA Medical School: Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant Program

Mentor: Dr. Mario Deng

Overview: Dr. Deng is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, an internationally recognized physician and researcher, currently the Medical Director of UCLA’s Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant Program. An example of specialization includes a study on reducing the risk of multiorgan dysfunction and rejection that stems from cardiac allograft rejection. Responsibilities: Working in Dr. Deng’s lab with many of his colleagues, including UCLA undergraduates. Requirements: Participants must have a proven track record in science and math courses along with a great deal of self-starting skills. Overview: The intern(s) will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team that consists of research scientists, clinicians, a nurse practitioner and researchers in the BrainSPORT program. Dr. Christopher Giza leads the Pediatric TBI/ Sports Concussion program at UCLA. He served as Vice-Chair for the California State Athletic Commission, traveled to Afghanistan in 2011 as a civilian advisor to the Department of Defense and Co-Chaired the American Academy of Neurology’s committee, which developed an evidence-based Practice Guideline for Management of Sports Concussions in 2013. Dr. Giza serves on the Center for Disease Control’s Pediatric mild TBI committee, the NCAA Concussion Task Force and the Major League Soccer Concussion Program Committee. He is currently a Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. Responsibilities: Assist in preseason baseline concussion data collection for UCLA athletics and partnering high schools. Students will have the opportunity to shadow weekly clinic and learn to administer various tools used in clinical concussion data collection. Students will work directly with other interns, undergraduate and graduate medical students who work in the UCLA BrainSPORT program and have the opportunity to design and present original research. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with the intern BrainSPORT team but interns should expect to be available from early-June to late-August. UCLA Orthopaedic Center: Sports Medicine

Mentors: Dr. David McAllister (father of Lindsey McAllister, ‘17), and Dan Boguszewski Overview: Dr. McAllister is the Director of the UCLA Sports Medicine Program. Dan Boguszewski is the Assistant Professor in theDepartment of Orthopaedic Surgery The primary focus of this lab is on athletic knee injuries. Responsibilities: Assist with all aspects of biomechanical testing using a robotic test apparatus, including cadaveric specimen preparation, testing, and data analysis. The research focuses on injury prevention and repair by examining joint stability, kinematic function, and ligament forces. The results of these studies will help to better understand sports injury mechanisms, guide surgical treatment and assist with the development of improved rehabilitation protocols following injury. Requirements: Participants must have a proven track record in science and math courses along with computer skills. Experience with spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel is desirable. Overview: The Bay Foundation (TBF) and the Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) have joined together to create an expansive internship program based at the Loyola Marymount University campus. This program allows for students and young adults to engage in environmental education and research projects that benefit local watersheds and the Santa Monica Bay. In doing so, participants have the opportunity to become stewards of the local environment by actively learning from local experts.

Responsibilities: Interns, working alongside LMU undergrads and others, will have opportunities to sign up for projects that help clean up the waterways, increase green space and natural habitat, advocate for wildlife, and environmental policy, among other things. Individuals interested in more specialized projects might be interested in the LMU campus sustainability tours or the Ballona Wetlands education docent program. Participants will be exposed to a full suite of environmental projects, making the LMU base a local hub for informal education on becoming a natural scientist. Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old. Participants are expected to record their experiences and research observations in a notebook. Timeframe: Interns must commit to a minimum of 40 hours. Dates are dependent on the projects that interns are interested in, and the hours will be documented and verified by a supervisor. Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

Overview: Alexa Café, held on the Marymount campus, is an all-girls learning experience for ages 10-15 emphasizing creative coding, web design, leadership, entrepreneurship, brand identity, and philanthropy, with STEM subjects creatively woven into the curriculum. Alexa Café encompasses coding camps, game design courses, filmmaking classes, web design courses, and photography camps. # of Positions: 2 Time Frame: One week, Monday-Friday, dates to be agreed upon at a later time Eligibility: Rising sophomore COSMOS* Overview: Marymount will be offering three scholarships to COSMOS, a four-week residential program at one of four UC Campusesfor high achieving math and science students completing grades 8-12. Overview: The purpose of this position is to provide an opportunity to gain experience working in an office environment and to learn about judicial court functions by performing a variety of administrative support tasks related to the program area. The work typically is performed under the close supervision of a regular permanent Court employee. Responsibilities: Under direct supervision, volunteers perform basic clerical and office support duties while learning court policies and practices. They provide assistance to the Court in carrying out these duties while receiving practical work experience and skill development opportunities, and learning court procedures, operations functions and various activities. Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old. Time Frame: One group of 3 from June 15 - July 3; second group July 6 - July 24 - Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. # of Positions: 6 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors LitiNomics Mentor: Christian Tregillis (father of Natalia Urena-Tregillis ‘18) Overview: LitiNomics provides consulting and expert testimony on economics, finance, and accounting - primarily in the context of legal disputes. This work often involves investigations into the amount of harm caused by alleged illegal acts such as patent infringement, breaches of contracts, and fraud. As a result, LitiNomics and its team members analyze product markets, the value of businesses, company records, and other information to support expert testimony in court. Responsibilities: Research companies and industries, read and summarize case opinions from courts, assist in building PowerPoint presentations and some Excel spreadsheets. Overview: Teri Austin is the President of The Amanda Foundation, a non-profit animal charity with a full-service veterinary practice. Responsibilities: Interns will rotate days between the kennel, front desk, and hospital in order to experience all facets of animal rescue and hospital care. Responsibilities include walking/feeding/grooming animals, aiding in educating people about pet adoption, assisting in the hospital, among others. Optional work on the mobile clinics and adoption days is possible. Overview: The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), which is located with the Getty Museum, (but is independent of it) works internationally to advance the conservation of cultural heritage places. The GCI undertakes scientific research, education and training, and model field projects. A snapshot of the GCI’s work can be seen http://www.getty.edu/conservation/index.html This internship is located within the Field Project’s Department, which is working to conserve sites from Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt, wall paintings at Herculaneum in Italy to the Siqueiros mural and the Eames House both here in Los Angeles. Responsibilities: Work with Ms. Macdonald, the GCI Field Projects Head, a Department of architects, engineers, conservators, archeologists and historians, and possibly interfacing with the Science Department.Students will contribute to a project and/or an area of focus based on the work of the Institute and the student’s interests relative to this work. After twenty-four seasons and millions of video submissions, AFV is distributed in over 103 countries around the world, and appears as fifteen local versions around the globe. Responsibilities: Working to promote the show in social media, digital media, and content creation, among other things. The Gotham Group Mentor: Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, (mother of Caroline Vein ‘18) Overview: The Gotham Group is a boutique talent management and production company that will provide interns with an expansive overview of the entertainment business. As managers, Gotham not only represents top writers and directors in the feature and television fields, but is the largest aggregator of book and comic book titles in the entertainment industry. They sell books to every producer and studio, and to the clients of every management company and agency in town. In addition, Gotham has a unique specialization in animation, and dominates in representing talent in this arena. On the producing side, Gotham has a first look deal at Sony Feature Animation and with ABC Studios for live action television series. Responsibilities: Interns will learn the ropes by shadowing assistants on desks, reading books and writing coverage, attending client meetings, answering phones, and obtaining business knowledge through general office assistance. internship program application 2015 Ms. Robin Pickett, Director of Girls Leadership, will send you and your parent(s) a confirmation email after the application has been received. To be eligible to apply for the program, students must be sixteen years of age (as of June 1, 2015) and a rising 11th or 12th grader at Marymount High School although some opportunities are available to rising 10th graders.
