A Marymount girl is ready for anything.

Marymount High School

There’s no mistaking a

Marymount graduate.

She is smart. Articulate. And remarkably self-assured. She has a manner that is mature, grounded and thoughtful, a perspective that is global and other-focused and a deep passion for making the world a better place. She values learning, friendship, faith and fun. A Marymount graduate has the knowledge, skills and confidence to excel at top-tier universities. She has the compassion and creativity to make a difference in her community. She is both exceptionally poised and poised for excellence — ready to lead, wherever life takes her. There is no mistaking a Marymount graduate. She’s the one helping, in her own unique way, to set the world on fire.

“Marymount taught me not to be afraid in the classroom and helped me to stay engaged and motivated to achieve my future goals. My teachers and advisors always encouraged me to look ahead to my next step and helped me see how it related to what I was accomplishing at Marymount.”

Morgan Vetter, Marymount Class of '11 Auburn University '15

Academic excellence above all. Marymount students develop an intellectual life—a talent for critical thinking and a passion for learning that sustains them through college and well beyond. Rich in math, science and the humanities, equally grounded in the timeless and technological, our curriculum prepares young women for admission to the most selective universities—and to stand out once they’re there. Marymount students’ SAT and ACT scores consistently exceed the national averages by 30%. Girls here take a minimum of six courses each semester and choose from among 22 AP and 18 honors courses. More than 80 of our courses are certified by the University of California. Each student receives individualized college counseling starting in her freshman year, based on her particular skills, personality and goals, helping to ensure she is admitted to a college that is just right for her.

A culture that asks girls to step up. Our communities, organizations and governments are crying out for innovative, ethical leaders with a global vision and an unshakable commitment to the common good. At Marymount, we treat every girl as an emerging leader. We cultivate leadership and character through instruction designed specifically for girls. We augment the high expectations of our academic program with leadership-development initiatives like the Marymount Internship Program, the “Inspiring Boldness” speaker series and mentoring opportunities. We spark an awareness of the world outside Los Angeles through our curriculum and a global network of 19 schools. We give every girl the opportunity to practice leadership in a variety of settings—in the classroom, on the playing field, on stage and in dozens of student-led clubs and activities. When a girl leaves Marymount, she is keenly aware of her role in defining the future and equipped with the skills, confidence and moral grounding to lead her way, wherever the future may take her.

The Class of 2016 worked closely with A Place Called Home to coordinate and plan their annual “Health & Garden Expo” which provided over 500 families from South Central Los Angeles with access to health education and services.

A signature emphasis on compassion, faith and justice. Success at Marymount is not defined by being the best in the world— it’s about being the best for the world. That’s why faith and service are fundamental to the Marymount experience. A Marymount girl benefits from strong foundations in education, service, leadership and character development that only a Catholic, independent school can provide. Students here learn that the highest purpose of an education is to serve others. They volunteer in their communities and abroad. They consider how the choices we make as a society affect the most vulnerable. They reflect on their own circumstances and learn to live “lives of gratitude.” Marymount students are encouraged to explore faith as a foundation for service and learn how to define and articulate their beliefs in a compassionate and thoughtful manner. Opportunities for contemplation are integrated into daily school life and across the curriculum. Girls leave Marymount with an abiding compassion, a strong connection to their spiritual selves and a contagious enthusiasm to make the world a better place.

“At CO Architects, we’ve been working as a team to design a new prototype pavilion for the LACMA building. It has been fascinating to get this real-life experience on an actual project, while gaining an understanding of each step that goes into the design of a building!”

Eraena Valory, Marymount Class of '15

Distinct Opportunities to Discover. At Marymount, we believe that the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom is an integral piece of the overall education experience we are committed to providing our girls as they move on to college and the next chapters of their lives beyond our walls. The Marymount Internship Program and “Inspiring Boldness” Speaker Series are two of our primary platforms for introducing girls to a vast array of career opportunities, academic focus areas and female leaders. These programs empower students to think beyond their present and to look fearlessly toward the future. The Internship Program offers a breadth of opportunities, ranging from neurological stem cell research at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine to art restoration at The Getty Conservation Institute and policy building at the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles. This ever-growing program is enriching and rigorous, offering students a chance to step up and face the responsibilities and challenges they will face in chapters ahead. The “Inspiring Boldness” Speaker Series takes outside knowledge and brings it inside our walls, with past notable speakers including Geena Davis (advocate for gender equality), Nell Scovell (co-author of “Lean In”) and Dr. Kristi Funk '87 (Founder of the Pink Lotus Breast Center). These accomplished women speak with the primary goal of inspiring our girls to challenge themselves, to have a voice, and to never be afraid to lead or excel.

“What initially attracted me to Marymount and what has allowed me to thrive in this community is the school’s well-roundedness. Whether it be sports, the arts, academics or technology, every aspect of Marymount is incredibly strong, allowing us to strengthen our overall skillsets, and also to discover new talents along the way.”

Hannah Robinson, Marymount Class of '17

A time-tested pedagogy, specifically for girls. “Girl power” was probably not a phrase the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary used when they founded Marymount Los Angeles in 1923. But it was at the heart of their mission nonetheless and remains at the center of Marymount’s mission today. Our instruction is designed expressly for girls and based on the most up-to-date understanding of how they learn, grow and engage with the world. During an incredibly formative time in their lives, our students connect with a peer group of strong, capable young women and are guided by accomplished leaders and mentors. They learn in a challenging, nurturing and supportive environment that prizes mutual success over competition. They explore what it means to be both powerful and female, and confront the complexities of being a woman in the 21st century. Studies show that single-sex education improves test scores, math and science learning and overall achievement in college. Our focus on girls, sharpened over nine decades, is one reason Marymount students are striking in their confidence, fearless in their learning and unabashedly themselves.

“My favorite thing about Marymount is that everyone is so warm and welcoming! From teachers to fellow students, I can always count on them to make me a better person and student. Our community is also unique because it promotes diversity of thoughts, beliefs and backgrounds. No matter what, Marymount encourages each of us to be an individual and to stand out, which makes for a very safe and encouraging environment.”

“Marymount has helped me to gain confidence and has taught me that there is no limit to what girls can do! We all come from different places but are here for the same thing—to become successful women of the future. There are so many opportunities that teach us to claim our ground while still working cooperatively with others and maintaining our poise. I’m so thankful to have been reinforced in the fact that I am my own person and that my opinion matters.”

“The best thing about being at an all-girls school is that there are no distractions in the classroom, making it easier to focus and participate. The teachers here are our biggest supporters. They instill a sense in us that they want us to do well, they find creative ways to bring each subject to life and are always willing to go the extra mile, diving deeper into a topic to make sure we have a real grasp on the material.”

“Being a part of the Marymount community gives me an overwhelming sense of family and kindness. Everyone on this campus has our best interests at heart and that is evident in each piece of our day-to-day lives as students here. At the same time, Marymount has taught me how to find my voice and to speak my mind in a respectful, yet compelling way. No matter what, I know that coming to school here, I will always be supported, welcomed and valued.”

“Since I stepped onto the Marymount campus, I have become more open, more confident and more myself. This place gives everyone a chance to be a leader and makes sure we are never afraid to ask a question or raise our hands in class. Here at Marymount, we simply have our own style. We aren’t afraid of trying something new and are always learning more about ourselves in the process!”

WHO THEY BECOME. Women living lives of consequence.

The ultimate measure of an education is the caliber of the person a student becomes. For generations, Marymount High School has produced women armed with knowledge, skills, character and confidence to succeed and lead in whatever life calls them to do. There is no greater affirmation of our work than the amazing women whose success began at Marymount.

Katie Low Anderson, '00 Los Angeles, California Senior Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis, California Pizza Kitchen Northwestern University '04 UCLA Anderson School of Business '09

“Marymount gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and to be a leader, which has been instrumental in my career and in my life. I loved being surrounded by so many smart and ambitious women who have gone on to be incredibly successful. My time at Marymount truly empowered me to be confident and poised as a woman in the board room and in the business world.”

“Being at Marymount, I was quite simply, happy. I always felt comfortable and was surrounded by teachers and friends who constantly put an emphasis on being a good person. Beyond that, I learned to be fearless and never to be afraid of being a leader. There were countless opportunities for me to learn to take control and to find my voice, which has ultimately shaped my career as a film producer and an entrepreneur.”

Daniela Taplin Lundberg, '94 New York, New York Founder / Partner / Producer, Red Crown Productions Princeton University '98

Margy Slattery, '07 Washington, D.C. Associate Editor, Politico Magazine Yale University '11

“I feel so grateful for the academic experience I had at Marymount. The small classes and excellent teachers who pushed us to think both collectively and individually created an intellectual experience that is hard to beat and one of the things I loved most about Marymount. Combined with its outward-looking, globally minded roots and mission, Marymount pushed me to truly open my mind to the world outside, something I will always value.”

“Marymount shaped me during my most developmental years, by encouraging me to explore and trust the person I am, listening Washington, D.C. to my ideas and introducing me to new people. Marymount also Public Relations Manager, taught me to appreciate the importance of relationships with other Susan G. Komen Foundation women, especially in the workplace but also in my personal life. I no doubt would be a different person today if it weren’t for U.C. Berkeley '05 my four years as part of the Marymount community. The George Washington University '09 I truly believe I am a wiser and stronger person for it.”

Kiki Ryan Burger, '01

Dr. Natalie Gallant, '98 Rancho Palos Verdes, California Medical Genetics, Miller Children’s Hospital / Long Beach Memorial Medical Center; Professor of Genetic Medicine, U.C. Irvine University of Pennsylvania '02 USC Keck School of Medicine '07

“For me, Marymount built an unbreakable foundation in the sciences, math, language and public speaking. With that, I was able to excel at an Ivy League institution and be accepted to multiple medical schools. Even now, as a national leader in my field of medical genetics, I draw daily on the confidence, professionalism and emphasis on collaboration I learned during my time at Marymount.”
