STUDENTS ADVANCING IN INTERNSHIP LEADERSHIP & LEARNING Marymount offers a number of internships in several different fields, from neuroscience, law, and finance, to architecture, and marketing, at sites throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Internship opportunities are available to students who want to focus on a particular area of interest or explore an opportunity during the summer. Hands-on learning and access to professionals are at the center of this experience.

Dr. Jay Sison, DDS Inc. and Westchester Pediatric Dentistry Mentors: Dr. Jay Sison and Dr. Christie Burnett (parents of Rachel Sison '20 and Allison Sison ‘24) Overview: Dr. Sison is a practicing periodontist and faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry. In addition, he operates a private group practice in Los Angeles. Dr. Burnett is a pediatric dentist. The interns who are interested in careers in the dental profession will be given experience in general dentistry and other dental specialties. Responsibilities: Interns will work directly with the doctors to assist in surgical and dental procedures that include: • • • •

1. Currently enrolled in a high school in the United States. 2. Enrolled as a high school senior graduating in 2021, or a high school junior graduating in 2022. 3. Demonstrate outstanding general academic achievement with particular focus on science coursework. 4. Able to participate full-time in all program activities during the eight-week period (June 14 through August 6, 2021 generally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). College tours/orientations and vacations should be scheduled so as to avoid any conflicts. Interns also have an opportunity to accompany Dr. Sison to the UCLA Dental School and interact with dental students and faculty to gain insight on life as a dental student and admission process to dental school. In addition, interns will have an opportunity to be involved with community outreach programs and events that provide dental care to underserved communities in Los Angeles. Time Frame: Dates and times are flexible and can be determined as agreed on by the intern and doctors. The Lundquist Institute High School Summer Fellowship * Mentors: The Lundquist Institute Investigators Overview: Established in 1978, The Lundquist Institute Summer Fellowship Program is designed to encourage high school juniors and graduating high school seniors to explore careers in the field of biomedical science. Students in the program will: • Spend eight weeks gaining laboratory or clinical research experience under the mentorship of The Lundquist Institute Investigators. • Participate in study groups in a mentored research project, culminating in presentation at the end of the program to peers, family, and research community during the final week of the program. Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA Pediatric Interventional Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Mentors: Dr. Daniel Steven Levi (father of Adelle Levi ‘23) and Dr. Gregory Perens Overview: Dr. Levi is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Interventional Pediatric Cardiology at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. Dr. Perens is a Professor of Pediatric Cardiology and Director of 3-D in the Congenital Heart Center. Dr. Levi regularly performs minimally invasive procedures to fix and palliate children with congenital heart disease including valve replacement, stenting and closing holes. He is also involved with research to develop new devices for children with congenital heart disease. Participants in this internship will observe interventional and open-heart surgeries on children with Dr. Levi alongside his UCLA Fellows. Dr. Perens will teach the students to make 3-D prints of hearts of children for whom procedures are being considered. Mock procedures will be performed on the 3-D printed hearts to simulate potential procedures. Responsibilities: We need students to help with two tasks: 1) to make 3-D prints for us to use in preparation for procedures and surgeries 2) to help make videos explaining these procedures to parents and patients Pre-procedural preparation for cases will include an understanding of the congenital heart anatomy and the procedural indications and goals. Students will observe catheter based and open-heart procedures (if possible) and will be asked to summarize the procedures. Students will be challenged to make 3-D prints from CT scans and MRIs of hearts of real patients with congenital heart disease in preparation for potential surgeries. 3-D printing will require the students to “segment” the heart anatomy and actually do the printing (either at Marymount or UCLA). We will also be asking the students to help make, edit and narrate


video segments explaining the surgeries and catheter-based procedures. These videos will be posted on the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiology website.

Minimum Requirements: • Participants must have a proven record of accomplishment in science and math courses along with a great deal of selfstarting skills. • Pre-existing skill set in 3-D printing would be desirable. UCLA Medical School Department of Neurosurgery & Pediatric Neurology / UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program Mentors: UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Team – Dr. Christopher Giza, Dr. Meeyro Choe, Philip Rosenbaum, Yena Kim, Anne Brown Overview: This opportunity will be completely remote and virtual, offered through Zoom meetings. The intern(s) will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team that consists of research scientists, clinicians, a nurse practitioner and researchers in the BrainSPORT program. Dr. Christopher Giza leads the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Concussion Program. He served as Vice-Chair for the California State Athletic Commission, traveled to Afghanistan in 2011 as a civilian advisor to the Department of Defense and Co-Chaired the American Academy of Neurology’s committee, which developed an evidence based Practice Guideline for Management of Sports Concussions in 2013. Dr. Giza serves as the UCLA’s principal investigator for the NCAA/DoD CARE Consortium research project, the largest national longitudinal concussion study of its kind. He is currently a Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital, UCLA. The multidisciplinary team works on a variety of funded and unfunded research projects investigating various aspects of traumatic brain injury. Topics include: Autonomic dysfunction, education and culture change, nutrition and recovery, virtual reality rehabilitation, neuroimaging, and others. Interns will have the opportunity to attend weekly pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury lab meetings with the BrainSPORT team where they will gain valuable insight on the daily operations of clinical research, and will also be expected to join weekly educational sessions from BrainSPORT team members and will be matched with a BrainSPORT team member for 1:1 mentorship.

Minimum Requirements: Students will work and meet virtually with other interns, UCLA undergraduate and graduate medical students who work in the UCLA BrainSPORT program. A culminating project on a research topic of interest will be presented (virtually) at the end of the internship. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with the intern and BrainSPORT team, but interns should expect to be available from early-June to late-August. Meetings and shadowing via Zoom will take place throughout the week and can be agreed upon with a mentor. # of Positions: 2 Eligibility: Rising juniors, with the intent that one may be a mentor for a rising junior next year – please apply especially if you are interested in extending internship into the academic year.

Osborne Head & Neck Institute (OHNI) Summer Scholars* Mentors: OHNI Physicians Overview: The OHNI Medical Scholars Program is sponsored by the Osborne Head & Neck Institute in Los Angeles. This program provides students with the opportunity to enter a clinical setting with a physician mentor and observe patient encounters and the practice of medicine. Website: https://www.ohnifoundation.com/scholars/ Minimum Requirements: • Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be available to attend the entire program. If you are unsure of your availability on a weekday afternoon, please contact OHNI. • Students are expected to be prompt and provide their own transportation. • Previous medical volunteer experience is not a requirement. • All students need to be up to date with their vaccines, including a TDaP booster (Adacel) to ensure protection from whooping cough and a PPD test for tuberculosis. • All student participants will be required to sign a HIPAA Confidentiality Agreement, Social Media Agreement, and Dress Code Agreement. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics (STEAM)


The Bay Foundation (TBF) Mentors: Karina Johnston and Karina Alvarez Overview: The Bay Foundation (TBF) works to restore native habitats, improve water quality, and provide benefits and values for people in the Santa Monica Bay region. TBF implements an expansive internship program that spans from high school students to college undergraduates and graduate students. This program allows for students and young adults to engage in environmental restoration, research, and education projects that benefit local watersheds and the Santa Monica Bay. In doing so, participants can become stewards of the local environment by actively learning from local experts and internship-mentors. Responsibilities: Interns, working alongside LMU undergraduates and others, will sign up for projects that restore natural habitats, clean up the waterways, provide benefits for wildlife, contribute applied science data to real world projects, and explore environmental policy, among other things. Individuals interested in more specialized projects might be interested in working alongside TBF staff and summer interns who will be conducting research and data collection at coastal habitat restoration projects. Participants will be exposed to a full suite of environmental projects, making the base a local hub for informal education on becoming a natural scientist. # of Positions: 4-5 Eligibility: Rising Juniors and Seniors

USC Viterbi School of Engineering, SHINE Summer Program * Mentors: Dr. Katie Mills and various USC Engineering Faculty Overview: SHINE (Summer High School Intensive in Next-Generation Engineering) is a seven-week opportunity for high school students to experience real life research as part of a professor’s research team. Despite being fully remote in 2021, SHINE retains this emphasis on experiential learning - learning by doing, not by studying - immersing students within their choice of cutting-edge research on cancer, environmental sustainability, machine learning, robotics, haptics, aerospace, and much more. As part of a research team, students conduct experiments and/ or create computer models, and as a cohort, they develop skills in researching scientific literature and presenting their research results in a final poster session. Close mentorship comes from USC Viterbi faculty, staff, and especially the graduate student researchers -- all enveloped within SHINE’s cohort activities and network. CO Architects: Architecture Discovery Summer Program Sponsor: Scott Kelsey (father of Madeleine ‘16) Mentors: Parini Mehta, Associate Principal; Lois Lee, Associate; and other members of CO Architects Overview: CO Architects is an architecture and design firm that specializes in university, science & technology and healthcare buildings. They are a collaborative office environment with a staff of 140 accomplished architects, designers, and building specialists, and support professions who start with an idea for a building and develop it into reality. This summer program will provide you with the opportunity to discover the process of designing and constructing the buildings all around you. Responsibilities: The architecture discovery program at CO Architects is a unique opportunity to work within an architecture practice. The experience will include researching buildings and architects in Los Angeles, learning about the design process, analyzing building materials, and honing graphic and presentation skills. You will be asked to design and develop your own individual project with the help of the CO Architects team. Time Frame: June 8 – July 1; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This summer program will be completely remote and virtual during the time frames listed above. # of Positions: 2 Eligibility: Rising Seniors


Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program * Overview: The Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program is a two-week virtual program teaching girls-trans and cis- and non-binary students the computer science skills they need to make an impact in their community while preparing for a career in technology. In addition to developing their Computer Science skills, they’ll learn about female role models in technology, past and present. They’ll be encouraged to take positive risks as they collaborate with other students to strengthen their resilience, intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence and sense of empowerment. Collinson, Daehnke, Inlow & Greco Mentor: Managing Partner Lisa Collinson (mother of Isabella DiGenova '21 and Francesca DiGenova '21) Overview: The CDIG law firm is devoted to diversity and promoting women lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants. We currently have 19 lawyers, 13 of whom are women. All of the named partners are also female. This is a litigation firm with trial attorneys, and the lawyers defend corporations and insured individuals-- everything from general liability to catastrophic death cases to civil rights excessive force cases. Responsibilities: Due to Covid-19, the bulk of this internship will be virtual. Students will be asked to attend the weekly calendar meeting every Thursday afternoon (approximately 20 minutes). Students will be given an assignment every Thursday for the following week, therefore flexibility will be required. Students will also attend depositions, mediations, and court appearances by Zoom or conference call. Students will be expected to summarize the appearances with directions from the attorney they are working with. Depending on the state of the pandemic, there may be an opportunity to come into the office one day per week to perform basic clerical and office support duties to get practical work experience in the litigation office setting. Overview: The CASM Climate Corps 2021 summer program is seeking students who care about helping to safeguard Mother Earth’s natural ecosystems and to engage the community in understanding how everyone counts in dealing seriously with global warming. The program is embedded in local, collective action to confront the global climate emergency. From June 21 to August 21, 2021, maintaining safe and appropriate COVID-19 protocols, they will train and support young people in developing a personal and practical understanding of the local impacts of climate change, sustainability and climate policies and programs, and interconnections between one’s interests and advocacy. Through collaborative teamwork and practice in inter- and intrapersonal skills, interns develop leadership skills. The CASM Climate Corps helps bring climate policy and action to life in the local community, while aiming to influence regional and state efforts and people everywhere. Each Corps member chooses to focus primarily on one of various tracks offered, such as: • • • • •

Gardening and soil Energy Mobility Urban planning and public art Zero waste strategies

The program’s components are supported by the CASM steering committee and coordinated with local partners, including the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Office of Sustainability, City staff, Santa Monica College or other universities, community organizations, school groups such as Team Marine at Samohi or Windward’s EcoClub, and other regional climate thinkers or leaders in these areas. Following the summer, year-round opportunities continue to involve the Climate Corps members and volunteers. Overview: For Summer 2021, this internship will be 100% Virtual—there will not be anything that takes place on either UCLA Hospital Campus. There may be a few times when interns and the Mentor will meet outside (while maintaining social distance) at the UCLA Botanic Gardens or outside of the Cafeteria for supervision, otherwise all other interactions will be via Zoom. The interns will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team within the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital both in the Westwood and Santa Monica campuses (Primarily Westwood at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center). Interns will be exposed to Social Work practice in an exciting and dynamic pediatric medical setting which includes working with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, music therapists, Child Life Specialists, Spiritual Care chaplains and many community partners. They will be joining interesting meetings with both staff and families as well as being able to observe monthly grief support groups (on Zoom) for siblings ages 7-17. Responsibilities: Interns will learn and observe how to provide support, programming and education, and help with event planning in a pediatric hospital setting. Students will be able to learn about each of the roles on our team, yet focus on both clinical support of families and staff, along with the critical program development piece. They will be able to assist with the development of programmatic materials, a Sibling Support Group curriculum and event planning, as well as attend several multidisciplinary committee meetings within the hospital. Requirements: This placement will address mature themes on a regular basis - serious illness and often childhood death - in an emotionally sensitive environment. An ability to handle these experiences with poise and professionalism is necessary. Support and debriefing on a regular basis of interns will take place, but this internship can be emotional yet very touching. Time Frame:

UCLA Departments of History and African American Studies Mentor: Dr. Brenda Stevenson (Mother of Emma Cones ‘13) Overview: Dr. Stevenson is an internationally recognized scholar of race, slavery, gender, family and racial conflict. Her specific intellectual interests center on the comparative, historical experiences of women, family, and community across racial and ethnic lines. Race and gender—the ways in which these two variables interact, intersect, collide with, emphasize, run parallel to and sometimes isolate one another—are at the center of her work. Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for assisting in a research project concerning the antebellum South and women in the Civil Rights movement. Best Friends Animal Society, Los Angeles Mentors: Best Friends Animal Society, Los Angeles Volunteer Coordinator and Staff Overview: Best Friends Animal Society’s mission is to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters and make America a no-kill nation by 2025. Intern volunteers play a vital role in helping to fulfill that mission by taking what they have learned at Best Friends back to their home communities and carrying their newfound skills into their career or volunteer work. Students will provide administrative support to our Lifesaving Teams and complete their intern volunteer experience having gained a broad understanding of the nonprofit animal welfare industry. Individual mentorship will be in the form of weekly meetings with the students to discuss the work they are doing and review a basic curriculum designed to teach them about the animal welfare industry. Responsibilities: Students can choose either or both of these roles:

Kitten Adoption Counselor Kitten Adoption Counselors support the Best Friends LA Adoptions Team by facilitating kitten adoptions with potential adopters. Best Friends LA does an average of 250-300 kitten adoptions a month. Kitten Adoption Counselor volunteers are extremely valuable to the organization and play a vital role in helping reach the no-kill 2025 mission. Essential Functions: - Facilitate virtual adoption calls, providing superior customer service and new pet parent counselling. - Interview potential adopters, review adoption surveys, answer questions and guide potential adopters through Best Friends adoption process. - Review medical history of kittens with potential adopters and explain follow-up needed for continuous health of their kitten. - Provide advice and guidance to future adopters on basic cat/kitten care to ensure they feel well-informed and ready to be the best pet parent they can be. - Communicate with Adoptions staff and fellow Kitten Counselors virtually when needed during shifts and at monthly meetings in order to ensure continuous communication and efficient process flow. - Demonstrate initiative to listen to instructions, ask questions to clarify if needed, and ensure that tasks are carried out correctly.

Remote Receptionist Reception volunteers support the Best Friends LA Adoptions Team by answering the main phone line and assisting members of the public with general questions regarding adoption and our lifesaving programs. The receptionist is a vitally important position that directly helps with our lifesaving goals. Receptionists should be able to demonstrate poise, compassion, and a non-judgmental demeanor towards our clients Personable interactions with the public help create a community and build support for Best Friends and our mission to Save Them All and make Los Angeles a No-Kill City. Essential Functions: - Answer phone calls and return voicemails. - Connect with Adoptions staff for inquiries that require immediate attention. - Track calls that require future follow-up from staff in our Staff Follow-Up Tracker/Message Log. - Attend monthly meetings with Adoption & Volunteer teams to ensure a continuous flow of communication and accurate information is distributed to the public. Because of the investment in training involved, this volunteer will be a valuable and important member of the adoptions & volunteer team. Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Mentor: Theresa Edy-Kiene, CEO (Mother of Olivia Kiene '17, Isabella Kiene '19, and Clara Kiene '22) Overview: Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serves nearly 47,000 girls in partnership with 25,000 adult members and volunteers throughout the communities of Los Angeles County and parts of Kern, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties. Role 1: Marketing Intern: Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles seeks an Intern in the Marketing and Communications Department (MarCom). They are looking for an enthusiastic intern to join their department during the summer months to help provide creative ideas to achieve their goals. MarCom is responsible for building a public awareness about the benefit of Girl Scouts for all girls and promoting the mission of Girl Scouts through various campaigns that increase participation in our programs. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about Girl Scouts experiences including Outdoor, Entrepreneurship, STEAM, and Life Skills programs; the ongoing recruitment of new girl members and volunteers; and their fundraising efforts to support girls from under-resourced and low-income communities. FunDev is responsible for building a public awareness about the benefit of Girl Scouts for all girls and raising philanthropic dollars to support our various Girl Scouts experiences including Outdoor, Entrepreneurship, STEAM, and Life Skills programs; the ongoing recruitment of new girl members and volunteers from underresourced and low-income communities of Los Angeles County. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about best practices in the fundraising field including the cultivation and stewardship of individuals, corporations, and foundations and will participate in strategic efforts to reach more donors. Fund Internship Responsibilities: The intern will have administrative duties including: • Assist with execution of donor and prospect communications • Develop events in new fundraising markets • Depending on availability, provide assistance at key highprofile events with CEO

The Gotham Group Mentor: Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (mother of Caroline Vein '18) Overview: The Gotham Group is a Hollywood-based management and production company. The Gotham Group’s literary management practice encompasses all aspects of writing and directing, whether it be film, television, publishing, journalism, or content creation. Beginning with Tony DiTerlizzi’s award-winning family adventure THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, which Gotham produced for Paramount in 2008, the Gotham Group has sought out visually stunning and compelling stories that strive to entertain audiences worldwide. In the YA space, the Gotham Group produced the MAZE RUNNER trilogy for 20th Century Fox, based on James Dashner’s New York Times #1 bestselling novels. The first movie in the series was released in 2014, and the series has made over $1 billion worldwide. On the prestige drama front, Gotham recently produced the father/son road trip film KODACHROME, which stars Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis, and Elizabeth Olsen. KODACHROME is based on a New York Times article by A.G. Sulzberger, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was acquired for distribution by Netflix, who released the film to rave review in April 2018. More recently, Gotham produced the movie adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s STARGIRL, which is one of the most beloved and acclaimed YA novels, which has over a million copies in print worldwide. STARGIRL was one of the first original productions for Walt Disney Studio’s streaming platform, Disney+. Gotham also recently produced the Netflix movie ALL TOGETHER NOW, based on the novel SORTA LIKE A ROCKSTAR by Matthew Quick. Responsibilities: Interns must be available to work remotely a minimum of two days a week. Interns will learn to write coverage, research projects, attend production and staff meetings, as well as pitch meetings with our clients. With many managers and assistants coming from internal promotions, Gotham looks to allow eager interns to learn and grow in the business with such opportunities as entertainment industry speaker meetings and assistant/manager shadowing. Bonesteel Trout Hall: Interior Design

Overview: Laurie Sefton is the Founder, Artistic Director and resident choreographer of Clairobscur Dance. Responsibilities: Interns will work side-by-side (virtually) with the company Director and the Associate Director of Operations. A good deal of this internship will be independent work with supervision by the Clairobscur Dance staff. Internship duties and activities might involve, but are not limited to, one or more of the following areas: • •

Fundraising: Work with Director, Associate Director of Operations and Guild on special events, online fundraising campaigns. Public Relations/Marketing: Communication and development of a social media campaign including multiple platforms, and working directly with the Artistic Director in the development and implementation of social media strategy. Duties will include editing video and photos and preprograming social media posts. Administration: Assist in Administrative tasks such as upkeep of the CRM database, website maintenance, presenter research.

Overview: Ms. Trout and Ms. Bonesteel, both Senior Designers and Ms. Stelea, Junior Designer, will guide the intern through a four-week internship program in Interior Design. They are located in Pacific Palisades and they are focused mostly on full residential projects. They are involved in new construction, light remodels and full interior design projects. In addition to residential projects some of their current projects include Super Yacht Design and Aviation Design. Many of their clients are high profile so it may be necessary to sign an NDA. Their office operates as a very busy interior design studio. There are 4 people working daily on about 20 projects at different stages of design. Responsibilities: The internship at BTH is a unique opportunity to participate in the day-to-day intricacies of a small but very busy design firm. Your day to day could include: shopping for accessories, bedding, fabrics, site visits, construction meetings, meetings with architects, putting together schemes and organizing the design library.
