Welcome to

Marymount SUMMER Welcome! We are excited to be offering another fun-filled summer at Marymount. Whether you are a student who would like to strengthen your foundation in academics or explore a completely new field of interest, there are courses for you. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. We look forward to seeing you on campus this summer!

Registration and Tuition To enroll, visit our website at summer.mhs-la.org. In order to register you must complete the following: * Online Registration Form * Emergency Contact / Medical Information Form * Planned Absence Form (if applicable) * Full Payment

A student may withdraw without penalty prior to June 1. After that date, tuition will be refunded less a processing fee of $150. Once classes commence, tuition is forfeited. Please note that after Monday, June 6, classes with low enrollment may be canceled. If a class is canceled, students in that class will be contacted and may either choose another class or receive a full refund for the canceled class.

Introduction to Algebra


Inform a t i on BOOKS Some courses require the student to purchase textbooks and other supplemental materials. Books are purchased through the website, MBS Direct (www.mbsdirect.net). After entering the website, select the appropriate class to display book information. For standard shipping rates, we recommend ordering by June 1.

CONDUCT Students are expected to abide by all Marymount standards with regard to behavior. Students may only be on campus if they are scheduled in a class, must remain on campus between classes and must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the conclusion of their last class. Marymount is not responsible for students who are not in class during the school day. Failure to cooperate with these standards may result in a request for withdrawal.

ATTENDENCE Regular attendance and punctuality are expected for all classes. All planned absences should be listed on the Planned Absence form and are subject to approval. If academic credit is being requested, full course credit cannot be granted to students who have more than two absences. *School will be closed on Monday, July 4.

DRESS CODE Clothing is casual and should be appropriate for an academic setting. No bare midriffs, short shorts, or short skirts.

INTRODUCTION TO ALGEBRA This course is designed for students entering grades 6-9 who would like to improve their mathematical comprehension and skills. The course systematically reviews and reinforces all of the essential skills necessary for success in Algebra I. Many of the concepts and skills normally taught in the first quarter of Algebra I will be covered to help facilitate an easier transition to Algebra: operations with numbers, fractions, decimal and percents, the order of operations, the metric system, polynomial arithmetic, techniques or solving linear equations, and word problems. The class will be split by level of experience and ability, determined by a placement test on the first day.

ACCELERATED SPANISH I This course is designed for incoming students who have had at least one year of Spanish and who wish to begin high school at Level II. Students should enroll if the Modern Language Department has recommended or required this course based on the placement exam results. The Accelerated I class provides intensive review and a solid foundation for students to be successful in Spanish II.

INTRODUCTION TO GEOMETRY This course is designed for students who will be taking Geometry in the fall. It is an introduction to the deductive logic and critical thinking skills necessary in Geometry. Students will work with triangles, quadrilaterals, general polygons, and circles. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of right triangles and the area and volume of plane and solid figures with particular focus on the geometric concepts included on standardized tests such as the PSAT and SAT. Students will develop mathematical problem-solving techniques as well as the study skills and test-taking skills necessary for future success in high school math.

WRITING FOR HIGH SCHOOL The emphasis of this course is on analytical essay writing. Students will write descriptive, persuasive, and expository essays based on their understanding of assigned class texts. Topics will include correct usage of grammar and writing fluency.

June 20 - July 22 | 10:30-12:30

ACCELERATED ALGEBRA I This course completes Algebra I for incoming 9th graders who need to reinforce their foundations in Algebra. Students should only enroll if the Math Department at Marymount has recommended or required them to take this course in order to qualify for Geometry in ninth grade. Special areas of study include operations with polynomials, solution of linear inequalities, graphing of linear equations and inequalities, operations with radicals, and the analysis and solution of word problems. A grade of 80% or above on the final exam is required for passage into Geometry in the Fall.

WRITING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL This course will help students establish, practice, and polish the writing skills they need for middle school and beyond. Topics will include journaling and personal essays, responses to reading, summarizing, formulating and supporting an argument, conquering pesky spelling, grammar, and punctuation “demons,� avoiding plagiarism, writing a thesis statement, an introduction to the five paragraph essay, and much more.

ACCELERATED FRENCH This course is designed for incoming students who have had at least one year of French and who wish to begin high school at Level II. Students should enroll if the Modern Language Department has recommended or required this course based on the placement exam results. The Accelerated French I class provides an intensive grammar review and a solid foundation of written and spoken French for any student wishing to be better prepared for success in French II.
