As Strawberry Festival President I would like to wish you a wonderful welcome to the 2009 Marysville Strawberry Festival, “A Magical Fantasy…” I am excited to be the 2008-2009 Strawberry Festival President. I have been a board member for 6 years and served on many committees such as, Pageant, Hospitality, and have been Royalty Chaperone, just to name a few. There is an amazing amount of pride I take in volunteering with the Festival and being this yearʼs President couldnʼt make me more proud. A big Thank You to all the Board members, volunteers, and sponsors, for all their hard work and donations. Without you we wouldnʼt be able to make the annual Strawberry Festival a success year after year. The Strawberry Festival and I are excited to invite you, your family and your friends to another amazing 10 days of Fun, Entertainment and Events! A Royal Welcome! My name is Shelby Hintze and I am the 2009-2010 Strawberry Festival Queen. On behalf of myself and the Strawberry Festival Court, welcome to Strawberry Festival. This is the 78th year of the festival and it is shaping up to be the best yet! I am so very excited to be part of the festival. We have all had so much fun so far, traveling to other festivals and representing Marysville. I definitely cannot wait for our hometown festival. I would like to introduce you to our 2009 parade Grand Marshal, Mary Kirkland, owner of Hiltonʼs Pharmacy on Third Street. Mary is a lifelong Marysville resident and has been involved in Strawberry Festival since she was a toddler. She is very deserving of this title and we are very excited to have her as our Grand Marshal. I would like to thank the entire Strawberry Festival board for all their hard work. I never realized how much work went into creating our festival. It is mind-blowing. So if you see anyone in a red blazer during festival, stop them and say thanks! I would also like to thank all of sponsors and volunteers. We could not do it without you! I hope to see you all at Strawberry Festival, the third week in June and at the Grand Parade on June 20th. The Strawberry Festival has something for everyone – delectable strawberry delights, including the colorful processions of the Twilight Grand Parade and Kiddies Parade, Market in the Park, live music, the frolicsome Adult Trike races at Asbery Field, dizzying carnival rides, scrumptious fair food and lip-smacking strawberry shortcake, a fashion show, talent show, rose-planting ceremony, and a new event, Kidsʼ Party in the Park, and much more. The real magic of the Strawberry Festival is that it brings people together as a community, and extends that feeling to visitors to make everyone feel like they belong. Confidence takes Shelby to the top

It was arguably one of the closest competitions in royalty history. Each of the young women vying for a place among this yearʼs Strawberry Festival royalty was outstanding. There was Jessica LaPlante, an ambassador for the Girl Scouts and a budding writer. There was Rebecca Thomas a seasoned pianist and accomplished gymnast. There was Azzlinn Morales who spoke with confidence and also played a mean piano. There was Erinn McPherson who had a heart for the homeless and a passion to open her own bakery. There was Samantha Hall whose seamless ballet presentation thrilled the crowd in the auditorium of Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Then there was Shelby Hintze who had a sweet singing voice, a strong sense of style and a commanding presence on stage. Throughout the competition, it was anybodyʼs guess who would be crowned queen and her royal ambassadors. But in the end, Shelbyʼs confidence, her winning smile and her uplifting outlook on life won the judges over. By her side as ambassadors would be Azzlinn and Rebecca. In addition to their new royal appointments, the bouquets of flowers and the rounds of applause from friends, family and fans, Shelby won $3,000 toward a college scholarship; Azzlinn and Rebecca each received $2,000 in scholarship money. It was Shelbyʼs first time

in the competition so she approached it pragmatically. “I told myself before the pageant that if I donʼt win, I would do it again,” she said. Sheʼd received throngs of congratulations from family and friends after the event. And over the week, she continued to get recognized for her achievement at school by friends, by phone, email and on her Facebook account. The common thread that put Shelby over the top was her charismatic personality and her confidence. It showed as she sang Kristin Andreassenʼs “Crayola” a cappella. It definitely showed as she spoke about ways to improve the community. Getting in front of people to speak, a nightmare for some, was quite the contrary for Shelby who is involved in leadership programs at M-PHS and sometimes speaks before the congregation at her church. “Iʼve gone to church ever since I was younger, my whole life and I have enjoyed it,” she said. “It is a great feeling to go to church and have the community there supporting you. I had people supporting me throughout my candidacy.” She has a genuine interest in what makes things tick. Upon entering the contest, she and the other contestants attended meetings, a Rotary council session and a school board meeting. To see the various processes, to see how the city is run, to her was, “cool.” Shelbyʼs inquisitiveness

will no doubt pay off for her later in life. She has shown an interest in journalism and fashion and may meld the two into a fashion magazine career. The idea of Nordstrom or Macyʼs, perhaps as buyer, also appeals to her. She wants to study at Brigham Young University in Utah, or possibly Seattle Pacific University. Sheʼs not sure yet. But there is time. The 16-yearold will be a senior at M-PHS in September. Besides, as the Strawberry Festivalʼs newly crowned queen, her royal duties, the float, fun and frivolity of it all, lie just ahead.

Princess Azzlinn Morales spreads goodwill When talking with Azzlinn Morales, one really gets the sense that this teenager is quickly getting a sense of the world around her and wants to do something about it. Sure sheʼs still an American teen who loves reading the “Twilight” series and can have a laugh with friends watching Jack Black do some hilarious old-style mask wrestling in “Nacho Libre.” But the person Azzlinn is likely to become as an adult is starting to take shape. Her speech during the royalty competition earlier this year focused on kindness and how sharing this free of charge to those who needed it most, could in turn reshape the world. There was a magical quality to a random act of kindness and she seamlessly incorporated that notion into

this yearʼs Strawberry Festival theme “magical fantasy.” Kindness had become such a powerful notion to Azzlinn that she started a sort of club at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, the Random Acts of Kindness Everyday (RAKE) club. “Kindness can be magical because it can impact a lot of people,” she said. I started Random Acts of Kindness Everyday and Iʼve seen how it can change people.” During the school lunch hour, she sat down with someone who she noticed never sat with anyone else. It was like initiating a new friendship. There was another time she saw students standing by a wall, as was their M.O., who had always kept to themselves. She introduced herself and they exchanged names. But the occasionally mysti-

fied set will not deter Azzlinn from putting a positive imprint on the planet. After high school she will venture east to Brigham Young University where she will study nursing. When she becomes a nurse, and when you hear the confidence in her voice when she says this, you will know that it will happen, she will take her training on the road that leads to Third-World nations where her kindness will be welcomed beyond measure. And there is an element of that kindness and inspiration at play in her role as royal ambassador of the Strawberry Festival. Along with the Royal Queen, Shelby Hintze and royal ambassador Rebecca Thomas, she has been representing Marysville in festivals in Washington, Oregon and Canada. Here too she has the power to

change and inspire. “Itʼs really fun and it ties in with the theme (magical fantasy),” she said. “A lot of little girls get excited and you feel important. People care about how you treat them and talk to them.”

Rebecca Thomas loves the pomp and fun of being a royal Rebecca Thomas, Strawberry Festivalʼs newest Royal Princess, definitely goes for the cerebral in things. Sheʼs a big fan of the Harry Potter books, having read them all and, yes, was one of those kids hanging outside the bookstore at the stroke of midnight two summers ago to get the latest installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” She even used the Potter novels during the royalty pageant to illustrate the potential she believes is stirring in everyone. And the junior at MarysvillePilchuck High School is further charting a course of introspection for Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, where she plans to

study psychology. “Itʼs interesting to think about what people think,” she said. Of more than 1,400 accredited public, private, international and local colleges and universities, Brigham Youngʼs psychology department is among the top 100, according to a U.S. News & World Report study. The department was recently approved by the National Association of School Psychologists which sent its credibility soaring. The approval also means graduates will find more success in becoming credentialed or licensed psychologists in many states. And should Thomas go to BYU, she will be in good company. The psychol-

ogy department is full of award-winning faculty such as Diane Spangler, who won the Young Scholar Award, the Aaron T. Beck Prize and the National Research Service Award of the National Institute of Mental Health. Pragmatism also runs parallel with Thomasʼ pursuit of the cerebral. Not only was she aware of the pageantʼs $2,000 grand prize (the ambassadorship brought her $2,000), but she also learned through school career counseling that psychologists are some of the highest paid professionals in the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the field is growing faster than other professions and salaries often skirt along six figures. But she certainly sets time aside for more creative pursuits, as well. Sheʼs a varsity cheerleader, a gymnast, she enjoys working out in the school gym and loves playing classical music and church hymns on the family upright piano. Even her younger brothers, 15-year-old Jacob and 11-year-old Benjamin play the piano. Still, one may wonder how Thomas will later dissect her tenure as a royal princess in the history of the Strawberry Festival. Odds are she will look back on the experience, which has already introduced her to new places, people and experiences, as a confi-

Rebecca Thomas dence-building and thoroughly enjoyable moment in her life. “All the treatment you get,” she said. “They really do treat you like royalty.” The “they” being Maryfest chaperones, her royal sisters and the fans of festivals and floats. Maryfest volunteers made sure the royals were fed and that their dresses were fine and whatever else they needed to shine while performing for the crowds. So many little girls along the parade routes were mesmerized by Thomas and the other royals, Azzlinn Morales and Shelby Hintze. “Itʼs been really fun, just being in the parades and riding on the float and meeting new people and having fun,” she said. “The little girls looked up to me.”

Junior Royal Sara Clayton is something to watch for Just watching 11-yearold Sara Clayton on stage, one canʼt help see her as a summa cum laude graduate at Harvard, Princeton or Stanford. The well-spoken sixthgrader nearly stole the show at the Strawberry Festival Pageant in March. With her confidence, charm and commentary on sign-language interpretation, she wowed the crowd and fittingly earned her title as Strawberry Festival 2009 Junior Princess. Clayton is a model student and has a sweet joi de vivre about her. It could be her endearing patriotic braces – the bindings are red, white and blue. It could be that she is active in just about everything, including Tai Kwan Do, which she practices with her

mother, Dana, father, George, and brother, Nicolas. Nicolas, who at 9-years-old, is in training for his black belt, grudgingly admitted that his big sister is even better at the sport than he is. It could be simply her love of learning. Sheʼs a big reader, having already plowed through four of the multiple-tombed “Twilight” series. It could be that she is a helper in every way. When she can, she works as a cashier assistant at her dadʼs company, Hometown Heating and Stove Shop. Nicolas helps too. It could also be that Clayton loves school, especially English and reading. A student at Cedarcrest Middle School, she is currently reading a theatrical version of

In fact, she will be starring in a doublebill of mystery theater at Cedarcrest, “The Case of the Frustrated Corpse” and “The Case of the Dead Guy.” She spends two-and-a-half hours three days a week rehearsing her roles as a wife who finds out her husband gets bumped off; then she plays a mysterious butler. The backto-back plays open at the school June 11. Whatever it is that makes Sara Clayton special, she is having the time of her life as the Strawberry Festivalʼs newly crowned royal. “It is a lot of work and very fun,” she said. “You get

Runners help runners at Berry Run The Strawberry Festival Berry Run returns to the Smokey Point Plant Farm for this summer for the third straight year. After relocating to the Lakewood Crossing-area business two years ago, run organizers perfected their race route and saw turnout boom last year. Members of the Grace Academy track and field team return to help manage the Berry Run, which includes a one-mile run at 8 a.m., followed by a 5k race at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds from the Berry Run benefit Grace Academy athletics, which uses the money to toward purchases like equipment. Sponsors of the event include Haggens, Nike and Team Fitness, who sponsor door prizes. Ribbons are also available to participants in both races based on time, age and gender. Registration takes place the day of the event — June 13 — at the Smokey Point Plant Farm, 15022 Twin Lakes Ave., from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

Fashion show will feature variety of options While the current economic news has people cutting their expenses, smart fashionistas know that there are still good deals out there. One of the Strawberry Festivalʼs longest-running programs, the fashion show at Leifer Manor will feature styles from bargain shops like WalMart and the Assistance League of Everett, in addition to department store outlets like J.C. Penney, Kohlʼs and Fred Meyer. The Assistance League of Everett is a cause near and dear to the heart of Maryfest board member Linda Farrington, who has organized this yearʼs fashion show with the help of new board member Kerri Jorgenson (event coordinator.) The group has a number of charitable causes all while feeling the same effects of the economy hitting other businesses too. “Our last month wasnʼt very good. I think even the thrift stores are starting to feel the pinch,” she said. “With the economy heading

Strawberry Festival Talent Show June 18 The 2009 Marysville Strawberry Festival Talent Show will take place June 18 in the Marysville-Pilchuck High School Auditorium, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the show starting at 6:30 p.m. Talent Show Director Marcy Giesler explained that 30 different acts will be performing, including vocalists, dancers and instrumentalists, among them a guitar-player, a violinist, a pianist, and a family band. Original songs and dance choreography will also be featured by some of the performers. A panel of five judges will determine the overall winner, who will then appear at

the June 20 parade. Admission will be $5 at the door, with children under 7 being admitted for free. Arts & Crafts Market shows work of artists, offers lots of fun The coordinator of the Arts & Crafts Market, Jodi Hiatt wants to see a whole row of young artists showing their work at the Arts & Crafts Market at this year’s Strawberry Festival. The Market runs from 2-9 p.m. on Friday June 19, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday June 20, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday June 21 and includes a wide ranges of products, from handmade soaps and lotions made right here in Marysville by Kathy Robinson to jewelry

and windchimes from Ritzville, Wash. The Market is made festive by the smell of corn roasting and other delicious fair food, Hiatt said there will be about 18 food vendors. The fun starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Along with about 100 vendors, there will also be train rides offered by Wayne Schneider, all the way from Fresno, Calif. and there will be a rock climbing wall brought in by It’s Party Time,

with Rene Fix-Anton from Puyallup, and electric go karts. Hiatt sent application forms to all the area high schools and colleges in the hope of getting young artists to participate. “I’m always amazed at all the wonderful talent we have in our local youth,” she said she was recruiting from schools in Mount Vernon to Edmonds, including Marysville, Arlington, Snohomish, Monroe, and even to Cornish Art Institute. “We usually have the same core group of food vendors with a few new ones each year.” Some of the most popular favorites are roasted corn, baked potatoes and kettle korn.

The roasted corn is by Romualdo Zamora, of Everett and includes baked potatoes and sweet potatoes, too.

herself guitar after getting one as a gift from a “hippie cousin.” In high school, Markstrom was overheard singing by a fellow classmate who encouraged her to join choir. Instead, she started playing drums in a band and didnʼt make her singing debut until a few years later at an Evergreen State College benefit. She joined The Encounters, now Magazine, in 2000. Lead singer as well as a rhythm and lead guitar player, Seattle native Ricardo Valenzuela has been making music since getting his first guitar at the age of 4. After learning some basics from his father, he started lessons at age 9 and studied with various local instructors including the gifted Northwest favorite, Michael Powers. Valenzuela has performed and recorded with several local singer/ songwriters and shared the bill with artists such as The Guess Who, Christopher Cross, Crosby Stills & Nash and Huey Lewis. He has been a member of area bands such as Athenz, 22/20, Chain Reaction, AquaVinyl. When not playing with Magazine, Ricardo does his own solo act throughout the area. Lead and rhythm guitar player Paul King was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in a musical family in Louisville, Ky. where his dad played clarinet and harmonica and mom and sister played piano. He got his first guitar when he was 9, but quit to focus on baseball and football. At 18, Paul got back into playing guitar and played with several different bands while in college. He ended up in Seattle when he landed a day job with Boeing. He helped start the band 12 years ago. The drummer, Seattle native Keith Lyons drove his parents crazy early on, banging on anything that would

He got his first drum kit in fourthgrade and was playing in a band while still in elementary school, continuing on in concert band, stage band and marching band at Ballard High School. He has been a fill-in drummer for Duffy Bishop, Lips, with Meredith Brooks, Revolver, Colorblind, The Doily Brothers, Baby Knockers, and more. Their bass guitar player, Jeff Gish was born in Chicago and raised in Davenport, Iowa. He has been playing bass guitar for more than 25 years. Affectionately known as “Gish”, “Gishy” or “GishMan” he began his musical journey with the viola, trombone, and trumpet before settling on the bass while in college. An engineering job brought him to Washington in 1986, he hooked up with a bluegrass band called the Duwamish Mountain Boys that he plays with to this day.

here and that’s more than five years,” said the KMPS marketing director, Erica Hall. “We do the broadcast from the Strawberry Festival because it’s a great community festival and a wonderful kick-off for summer,” Hall said. The KMPS DJ who will be at the festival is “Big Daddy.” Ryan “Big Daddy” Michaels works the evening shift at the country music radio station. In addition to being an on-air personality, he is also operations coordinator. Michaels considers himself a simple guy. “I’m not trying to impress

anyone,” he said. “I’ll be wearing jeans and a sweatshirt just like everyone else,” he said. He enjoys watching Seahawks games and he plays in soccer and bowling leagues. His dream vacation is to go to Graceland for a day, or to see Jimmy Buffet perform in Florida, and catch the Seahawks in a Super Bowl game. The best advice he ever got from anyone? “Remember, you are unique, just like everyone else.” He got that tidbit from a Red Robin coaster.

decided to field a team. The first couple of years, the Golden Corral teams competed on trikes provided by the city, but soon after, Kossak sat down with his brother and grandfather to design a speedy, lightweight tricycle that could stand up to the various obstacles on the course, which change from year to year. Kossak credits his bike at least in part for Golden Corral’s success over the years. “As far as bikes go, ours is probably one of the fastest, lightest bikes,” he said. “The race comes down to person and trike, and although the trike can’t guarantee us a win, I’m sure it’s played a pretty good role over the years.” While the obstacles are

usually kept under wraps, past ones have included weaving through concrete blocks, biking through a mud pit and over trike-wide seesaws. One classic leg of the race is always the jump in the Jell-O pit. Kossak has never had trouble fielding teams from his staff, averaging about three to four teams per year. Past rivals have included the tribes and the Buzz Inn, with more recent competition from Marysville Fire and Roy Robinson. “We really like it. It’s fun, we’ve always been pretty good at it,” he said. Rose Planting Ceremony June 20 The Marysville Strawberry Festival Rose Planting Ceremony takes place June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Red Caboose at Fourth Street and Cedar Avenue. Carol Kapua, of Maryfest, explained that the Royal Rosarians of Portland conduct this ceremony in the April Friesner Memorial Garden. It started in 2001, and every festival president since then has a rose planted there, in their honor. Other community members have also been honored with rose-plantings in their name at the garden, including Friesner and city of Marysville Parks and Recreation Director Jim Ballew. “The roses are always nice to see, and since we’ve been doing this for several years now, the garden is looking very nice,” Kapua said. Visitors to the Strawberry Festival Market in the Park enjoy viewing collectible cars in a car show coordinated by the Emerald City Street Rod car club.

Car show benefits food bank Emerald City Street Rods presents the annual car show at the Strawberry Festival to raise money for the Operation Marysville Community Christmas, according to the club president, Paul Lind, of Everett. “The OMCC is basically the food bank.” Lind said that a lot of the 22 club members are from Marysville and they like to help out by presenting the car show. “Weʼve been doing it for at least 10 years, maybe more,” Lind said. He canʼt say how much money they hope to make, but have made $1,500 on some years, but other years they just break even. “It all depends on the weather,” Lind said. Registration of folks who bring their cars is $10, and spectators are free, but they are encouraged to bring food for the food bank. “We donʼt give trophies, but we do offer dash plaques to participants,” Lind said. Lind said he owns three cars but he wonʼt be bringing his own cars to the show. “Because I have to bring a lot of stuff so I donʼt bring my cars.” Lind owns a 1927 Model T 4-door convertible, a ʻ57 Ford, and a ʻ52 Chevy Belair. Last year they had 100 cars, but before that, they have had up to 300 cars. The car show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the cars start rolling in as early as 7:30 a.m., Lind said. “All the members of the club help out.” Itʼs the only show they put on. “We are a laid back, lazy club,” Lind joked. “Along with Marysville members, the club includes many members from Everett and some from as far away as Anacortes.” They meet monthly at Alfyʼs at Silver Lake. “Itʼs a good cause and the festival organizers are good to us. Itʼs a fun day for all of us. We like the Strawberry Festival because of the arts and crafts show that gives the women something to do,” he said.

Strawberry Festival debuts ‘Kids Party in the Park’ This year’s Marysville Strawberry Festival is set to include a new event, “Kids Party in the Park,” in the Totem Middle School outer courtyard June 20 from noon to 6 p.m. Kids Party in the Park will cater specifically to young people in and around the Marysville area, by offering an entertainment stage, children’s activities, arts and crafts, all for free. Ronald McDonald will be performing from 12:30-1 p.m., and from 1:15-2:15 p.m., the Marysville YMCA will be presenting Zumba for Kids. The Marysville Performing Arts Centre will stage a 2:20-3:30 p.m. show, and the “Reptile Man” will follow from 4-5 p.m. Ronald McDonald won’t be the only mascot on site during the day, as the AquaSox’s Webley, Smokey the Bear and McGruff the Crime Dog will also

put in appearances. All area non-profit and youth recreation organizations, as well as local businesses, are invited to participate in Kids Party in the Park. Among the participating organizations are the Marysville YMCA, the city of Marysville Parks and Recreation Department, the Marysville Fire District, Camp Fire and the Girl Scouts. “We’ll have a bouncy house and an obstacle course as well,” said Angie Miller of Maryfest. “The cost will be very little, if any. It’s for the little kids in the community, who don’t have a lot to do. This way, they and their families can have fun together. Shortcake eating contest set for June 20 At 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20 all are invited to compete in the Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest at Asbery Field, just one of many opportunities to enjoy the biscuits made by a professional biscuit baker, Farlan Dubarry. “His claim to fame is making 900 Twinkies per minute,” said a fellow Mason, Kenneth Cage. Dubarry offers his expertise to the Marysville Masons, who bake the biscuits to serve strawberry shortcakes at many festival events. “Farlan has worked as a baker all across the country,” Cage said, estimating that about 40 or 50 people help, including wives and family members and members of the womenʼs affiliate group, Eastern Star. They provide the biscuits for the Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest, as well as selling them to the public at the Market, and at the parade. They are baked and served by the Marysville Masons with help from their Eastern Star wives, Cage said.

“The Masons came to us about five years ago and asked if they could sell strawberry shortcake at the festival. We said, yea, thatʼs a great idea,” said Jodi Hiatt, Market vendor coordinator. “Theyʼve been doing it ever since.” Cage said they havenʼt got the word yet, how many biscuits are needed, but in past years they did about 25 dozen. “Thatʼs a lot of biscuits,” Cage noted. They bake fresh shortcake every morning, and provide if for the formal dinners and luncheons, for the parade participants, and for the public along the parade route, as well,” Hiatt added. “They are very busy bakers.” The project is a fundraiser for the Masons who made about $5,000 last year and distributed their earnings to several different beneficiaries, including the Center for Battered Women, Christmas House, the Marysville Food Bank, Gospel Mission in Everett, and Operation Outreach, in which they partner with the

Hundreds expected to participate in Kiddies Parade The Grand Parade isnʼt the only parade to hit the streets of Marysville during the Strawberry Festival as hundreds of children are expected to turn out for the annual Kiddies Parade. Sponsored by the Boeing Employees Credit Union, the Kiddies is open to children 13 years of age and younger and will be held Saturday, June 20. “This is a very popular event every year,” said Carol Kapua, a volunteer with Maryfest. “We have about 400-500 people participating in the Kiddies Parade.” Registration for the Kiddies Parade runs from 4-5 p.m. outside of the Totem Middle School Office located on Seventh Street. Judging will be from 5-5:45 p.m. and the line-up for the parade begins at 5:45 p.m. at the intersection of Seventh and Alder streets. The parade begins at 6 with participants marching down State Avenue, around the Bank of America to Comeford Park. Awards will be handed out at the Gazebo in Comeford Park immediately after the Kiddies Parade. The free parade will include a variety of categories including groups, costumes, wheels, pets and floats. Awards will be presented to the top five places in each category with one Grand Prize Overall Winner.

The annual Strawberry Festival Fireworks Show is set to light up the sky again this year. Sponsored by Fred Meyer, the fireworks are slated to go off beginning at 10 p.m., immediately following the Grand Parade on Saturday, June 20. Carol Kapua, Maryfest volunteer, said that the fireworks will be launched high enough so that they can been seen from almost anywhere in the city. “After the Grand Parade, people can stay where they are to watch the fireworks,” said Kapua. “They just need to turn their chairs so that they are facing south and they should be able to see them.”

Festival selects Kirkland as Parade Grand Marshal Mary Kirkland is as local and as homegrown as they come. Thatʼs usually a prerequisite in the selection process for Strawberry Festival Grand Marshal. But this year it was more likely about not only Kirklandʼs involvement in the community but her connectedness and love of it that made her an ideal candidate for marshal. Kirkland, owner of Hilton Pharmacy at Third and State streets, grew up in Marysville. She grew up watching the Strawberry Festival and watching the community itself evolve. She went to Liberty Elementary School, then Marysville Junior High School, then Marysville High School, before it became MarysvillePilchuck High School. From there it was off to the University of Washington where she earned a bachelorʼs degree in pharmacy.

Many of the faces who claim parade-viewing spots along State Avenue over the years, remain the same. Then their kids stake out the same spots and eventually, it becomes a family tradition. Customers over the years have come into the pharmacy with their kids and then years later, those kids, now adults, come in with their own children. Kirkland gets to see all that change first hand and it leaves an indelible mark on her, one that makes her perspective of Marysville unique.

Grand Parade promises to be premier event The 78th Grand Parade once again promises to be the premier event of the Marysville Strawberry Festival and a “Magical Fantasy” that everyone is sure to enjoy. The parade, which will feature 115 entries, begins at 7:45 p.m., Saturday, June 20, and will roll down State Avenue from 76th Street to Third Street. “Weʼre really excited about this yearʼs parade,” said Carol Kapua, who along with Sheila Thompson, is coordinating the event. “Weʼve been working hard all year long to make sure we have a great parade.” The parade will feature a large variety of entrants including drill teams, floats from many of the festivals in the Northwest, marching bands and more. Returning crowd favorites include the Seafair Pirates, the Clan Gordon Pipe Band, the Lake City Vigilantes and others. “Weʼre also going to be having a special surprise this year,” said Kapua. “Weʼre really excited to have a new equestrian group, The Lau Lio Paʼu Riders from Hawaii, participating this year.” In years past the parade has drawn tens of thousands of spectators, with many putting out lawn chairs and blankets along State Avenue the day before the parade to reserve a prime viewing spot. “Due to the economy, people have been staying closer to home,” said Kapua. “So crowds have been bigger at all parades and we expect the Grand Parade to be no different.”

Clemmons is large and in charge

At 6ʼ4 and 340 pounds, Dave “D.C.” Clemmons is likely the most imposing figure aboard the train that is the Strawberry Festival. And fittingly, as the unofficial “official” royalty bodyguard, heʼs not to be trifled with. During the Grand Parade heʼs by their side. During the near three-dozen parades and royal events held throughout the state, youʼll find him, walking behind or beside the newly crowned jewels representing Marysville. “Itʼs always so I can keep my eyes on them, but not to crowd them,” Clemmons said. Heʼs been a protector and confidant of the young women for 12 years, and loves every minute of it. There are the moments, such as when an unsavory character gets a little too close, where Clemmons asserts his authority, but never in a way more than a traffic cop. In all these years, perhaps because of his knack for steering his charges from shadowy situations or because those considering testing his mettle think better of it in the end, Clemmons has had no serious

confrontations. Which is not the case with his other jobs. As you might imagine with say someone who parlays his height into a career in basketball, or anotherʼs voice into a singing career, Clemmonsʼ size made him a shoe-in for bouncer. His current gig is at Club Monte Carlo, a venue with a 2,000-person capacity catering the Latino demographic and where infectious salsa, Cumbia and bachata rhythms fill the room. But there have been times where Clemmons, and the other 24 men on the clubʼs security crew, have tangled with people who wanted to do more than tango. “Iʼve had people try to jump over me to get back in the club. Last week we had some Army guys getting in a fight and they were Army strong and that was hard,” he said. “I try to grab people by their arms because the fight isnʼt with us. We just try to keep them separated and not get involved.” With a winning smile and a giving nature, Clemmons is a natural-born peacemaker. And he extends that sensibility to his volunteer work at Maryfest and

the Strawberry Festival Royalty where he escorts the royalty, volunteers with the set-up with the float and wherever spurof-the-moment volunteering is needed. “Anybody who needs help,” he said, “I help them out.” A resident of Renton, Clemmons wanted to volunteer wherever his services could be of use, be it a hospital or a community program. His first notable foray was with the Des Moines Waterland Festival where he helped vendors set up, set up arts and crafts and signed people up. The festival fizzled in 2004, but as itʼs the cityʼs 50th birthday, theyʼve asked Clemmons to help with the celebration events. In addition to Waterland, he volunteered for Seafair as a parade marshal. That connection led to Maryfest, where a real personal bond was forged with members of the board and royalty year after year. “You just make a lot of friends here,” he said in the lobby of the theatre at the Marysville-Pilchuck High School where 2009ʼs royalty had just been crowned. A smooth head, big smile and a black suit, he looked on as Maryfest Board member Bobbi Young posed for photos with the royalty, said hello to parents, fellow volunteers and board members. He was in his element, though later that evening, he would drive down to Seatac and put on a

Dave “D.C.” Clemmons different game face. It is the festival that allows Clemmons to let the kid in him have fun, too. To be sure, he throws the occasional water balloon at unsuspecting Maryfesters or royalty, and he might be the squirt-gun culprit nobody can pinpoint. Though the job requires concentration, he said, “donʼt think Iʼm not a kid.” When itʼs all said and done, when Marysville heralds the end of the royaltyʼs long reign, they give him heartfelt thank yous and they buy him silly gifts that express their gratitude. He keeps in touch by email and the occasional text message, then embarks on a new year. “I look forward to it every year,” he said.

she hadnʼt received a crown, we wanted to be prepared.” She told fellow board member and float driver Chuck Walser of the new float requirements. He then spoke in more detail with Hintzeʼs parents who gave him

This yearʼs float is unlike any other in Strawberry Festival history. Itʼs the first one to ever employ a service ramp for an electric wheelchair. Staff at Gary Turner Display (GTD) of Delta, B.C., have been making Strawberry Festival floats for years. Gordon Kelleway had been working at GTD for 22 years and this was the first time the company was ever tasked with the request. “I was able to get under the existing chassis and with the measurements open the front end and make a slot for the chair to fit in,” he said. “We gave it anchoring points and never had the chair in our possession.” This yearʼs Queen, Shelby Hintze uses a chair and so Maryfest board members had to make sure the float could support her safely. The discussion began back in January when the board mem-

the specifications of the chair and the preferred incline on the float ramp. Walser relayed that information to Kelleway and GTD began work on a float that brought new meaning to form and function. “Itsʼ working out wonderfully,” Hiatt said. The chair is secured with a bar down low in the front and anchored with a seatbelt-like strap in the rear – similar to the rear strap in car seats. The ramp is not even discernable from the spectator vantage point. In keeping with this yearʼs Magical Fantasy theme, the float is festooned with fairies and flowers and a very festive feel. Hintzeʼs chair fits in front with stations for princesses Azzlinn Morales and Rebecca Thomas at the center. Maryfest board member Angie Miller said, “I like the fairies, I think theyʼre cute,” she said. There is a lot more detail to the float this year, too, Miller added. There is purple frills and butterflies and flower garlands throughout-and fluttering fairies around a giant strawberry smack in the middle. The paint for the massive fuchsia flowers, for example, has sparkles in it and the flowers themselves are lightweight and bounce a little more, giving the illusion of movement to an otherwise stationary float. Walser agreed. “I think itʼs a marvelous design,” he said.

Maryfest 2009 Senior Royalty

Jim Welk and Barbara Watson have been named Strawberry Festival 2009ʼs Senior Royalty. Both Barbara and Jim are 82 and reside at the Marysville Care Center. Barbara grew up in the northend of Seattle and met her husband, Bud, at a University of Washington dance class. Theyʼve been married for 62 years and have four children. She spent her adult life working in a hospital, as a fulltime mom and then a postal clerk. The couple have seen the festival many times and even have a picture of the 1957 Strawberry Festival Queen at their house. When Barbara got word that she was this yearʼs queen, she was thrilled. Welk meanwhile, grew up in Pinehurst, Wash. and his father was at one time a float builder for the Strawberry Festival. Not only did he make floats, but he made strawberries too. The family had a farm in Pinehurst and Jim used to work that farm as well as a neighborʼs farm. The neighbor told Jim that if he worked the crop, he could reap the profits, and thatʼs just what Jim did. Jim has been married to his wife, Yvonne, for 52 years and they have four children. When he found out he was going to be king,OPENING he said, “thatʼs cool.” st

May Evanson, 97 and Don Taylor, 81, met on Valentines Day 2008 at Grandview Village. She was a school teacher for 30 years in the Marysville School District. He was a retired city employee – who to this day loves wearing cowboy hats. Maryfest 2009 Senior Royalty That Stan Jones and his wife, Joann, have been named the Strawberry Festival representatives for the Tulalip Tribes is an apt gesture on the part of the festival and the city of Marysville. Stan Jones, 83, is practically royalty with the Tribes. He has been a member of the board of director for more than 40 years, most of them as chairman. He

helped secure tribal fishing and gaming rights for the Tulalips.; Heʼs helped build a medical clinic on the reservation and made college tuition a reality for all tribal members. Perhaps his greatest effort was in helping to give fishing rights to tribes. The Boldt decision of 1974 awarded state tribes half the stateʼs salmon catch. He testified that harvesting salmon was a part of tribal livelihoods on top of a spiritual relationship, and the Point Elliot Treaty of 1855 should reflect that. He also helped revive the tribal salmon ceremony. The first one was in 1976 and has been carried forward each year after. Throughout it all, Joann has

been there. In acknowledgment of his decades of service to the Tulalips, including amazing recruiting of tribal success stories and getting them to come back to Snohomish County to help their people, Stan Jones was awarded the Tribal Gaming Visionary and Small Business Empowerment Award from the National Indian Gaming Association. The couple will be among three other couples selected as the Strawberry Festivalʼs senior royalty. Stan and Jo Ann will ride in a car during the festivalʼs grand parade. Florence Adler and Mark Labdon are the new king and queen at Madeleine Villa. Valentines Day marked a double special day at Madeleine Villa where the retirement community selected its king, queen and princess for the year. The king and queen would also get to ride in the Strawberry Festivalʼs Grand Parade. Mark Labdon, a former college professor was thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to be king. When heʼs not wearing a crown and cape and sitting on a throne, heʼs often organizing activities at Madeleine Villa such as card games and the like. The charismatic gentleman has been at the retirement community for two years, has lived in Marysville for many years and has seen the Grand Parade on TV. This time he gets to be part of the parade, and no doubt, his friends at Madeleine Villa who will have watched this yearʼs proceedings on TV will upon his return greet him like a royal celebrity. The same could be said for Florence Adler, a Washington native, mother and housewife and this yearʼs newly crowned queen. She has also been a long-time Marysville resident and has been at Madeleine Villa for two years. She was thrilled when she heard her name called to be the queen for the year. “If you met her sheʼs sweet as can be and is just a nice lady to be around,” said Laurie Roberts, activities director at Madeleine Villa. “Ever since sheʼs been nominated, she think sheʼs the boss of the building,” she added with a laugh. Well, she is queen and what the queen wants the queen gets. Congratulations to Mark Labdon and Florence Adler. Have a wonderful time at the parade!

Waste Management, city and festival team up to cut litter The City of Marysville has always made overtures to be more green. And this year is no exception. To help cut down on litter after the Strawberry Festival Grand Parade, the City has partnered with Waste Management to put out blue recycling bins along the State Avenue parade route. Maryfest board member Angie Miller said she and other members had been thinking about doing something because “thereʼs a lot of trash on the parade route after the parade,” she said. “So it became a discussion with Maryfest, the city. The city helped us coordinate it.” Recycling bins will also be posted around the festivalʼs market and kidsʼ party in the park events.
