He starts with bread sliced in thin halves, pressed down with plastic wrap, then laid down as you would the rice, and the burger patties play the role of the fish. Using the toppings from the burger of tomato, avocado for creaminess, cilantro to kick it up a notch, a little bit of microgreens and, of course, French fries, and there you have it. The way to spend Sunday. A man in Canada was charged with mischief after he tied more than 100 helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair purchased from a hardware store on a Sunday evening, strapped a parachute on his back and set sail over the city in a publicity stunt intended to advertise a cleaningproducts company. He was blown off course and jumped on a field nearly two km west of his intended destination where he was met by police and arrested. “It was the most fun thing I’ve ever done,” the man told reporters. The Swedish machine can accelerate from 0 to 99mph (159kph) in 2.6 seconds. Only six models of the car have been made to date.

he Kenilworth community swimming pool is in full holiday mode. Open at 10am and closing around 4pm. Lots of visitors, campers, caravan folk and of course our Kenilworth swimmers. Lap swimmers are using the pool almost daily to keep cool and fit. The pool committee would like to thank all the volunteers who are helping out during the holiday season. Without them we would not be able to keep the pool open. There is now a 10 visit pass @ $30.00 available, that can be purchased from the kiosk. This makes the entry fee $3.00, for ten visits, instead the usual $4.00, so you save one dollar per visit. Good deal and a great idea for visitors or regular swimmers. By the way the water temperature is perfect! Again, please note that the Kenilworth pool is a community pool, managed by a very small, dedicated committee. We always welcome more members to join us on the committee, so if you have the interest and time, do let us know. Enjoy your holiday and swim to keep cool in Kenilworth’s pool!

ver Christmas and new year the emergency calls to 000 have had the Responders busy being called out to serious trauma and other diverse medical casualties. Attendance was directed to locations from Conondale to Imbil and boating accidents at Borumba Dam. Responders were also sent to deal with motorbike emergencies in difficult locations deep in the Kenilworth State Forest. I would personally like to thank Kenilworth Responders for their voluntary dedication time and skills over the holiday period. On behalf of our KFR group, we wish you a happy and safe new year.

DRESSMAKER’S SCISSORS

grew up on the family dairy farm on Booloumba Creek Road during the 1930’s and took an interest in making doll’s clothes from an early age. Along with my brothers and sisters I attended school first at Cambroon and later in Kenilworth. In 1939 I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go to boarding school in Brisbane and attended St Ann’s, the Industrial section of All Hallows Convent where I learned dressmaking from some very talented nuns. This experience taught me how to draft, cut and sew clothes. At that time you couldn’t buy readyto-wear clothes as you can today. I spent a year and a half at All Hallows and returned to Kenilworth at the end of 1940. Subsequently most of my family moved temporarily to Gunnedah in NSW to stay with relations as it was a difficult period in World War 11. There was a fear that Australia could be invaded and the government encouraged anyone who could move south to do so. The army was prepared to defend the area south of what was called the Brisbane Line. On return to Kenilworth around 1943, I used my dressmaking skills to make clothes for the family. Mrs Fleiter asked me to make a dress for her and subsequently asked me if I would spend a week at her house to make dresses and other clothes for her and her children. This started my career as a dressmaker. As it became known around the community that I was prepared to travel to farms and houses in the town, my career took off. I would spend about a week at each house and devote my time to drafting patterns, sewing dresses, ball gowns, children’s clothes etc. The families welcomed me into their homes and I was well looked after using my Malvern Star bicycle to travel between places with my port strapped on to the back of the bike. I was trained at All Hallows to be discreet and not pass on gossip from one house to the next and I was careful to maintain this practice. I mostly made women’s and children’s clothes but occasionally I made men’s shirts. I remember Bob Beattie asked me to make two shirts for him from special material he had purchased and he wore one of the shirts to the Melbourne Cup. The other one was stolen from his hotel room in Melbourne. I loved the dressmaking work and was kept busy with it, continuing in the role for around eight years before getting married and living in Brisbane at the end of 1950.

I used the sewing machines belonging to each family I visited but this pair of scissors travelled with me to each job and I was careful to keep them sharp and only use them to cut material. They were purchased by mail order with the first money I saved from my dressmaking work. Each season T C Bierne Department Store in Brisbane would send out a catalogue and you could select and order what you wanted and the goods were posted to you. he Food Fest is well and truly rolling along. Almost all of the stall sites have been booked, with old faces and new faces to make it varied and interesting. For the youngsters this year, we have Old MacDonald’s Animal Farm, our very popular camel rides, horse and cart rides, as well as face painting, art in the park, Cheester Egg Hunt and an Easter Hat Parade. So kids bring your Easter hats and rock up at the Cheese Rolling area at 11.30am for the start of the parade. Now for the big people, a delicious selection of fine food and fare to taste and purchase, all from the Mary Valley. Gourmet cooking demonstrations, Chef Peter Wolfe and something new with the Paleo diet from Primal Influence’s Aimee and Clint. Also bush foods from Veronica at Witjuti Grub Bush Food Nursery. As always the great and popular Cheese Rolling competition for the young and old. This year there will be age groups with prizes to make it easier and fairer for all. The very popular Rubatuba will again entertain musically. Wine and cheese tasting all day. What a great family day in Kenilworth and the best is that entry is free! e propose to establish an Outdoor Education Centre at 243 Booloumba Creek Road at Cambroon.

We are a small, family owned and completely self-funded business called Adventure Alternatives. We own and operate an Outdoor Education Centre at Woodford on 60 acres in a rural area. It is run by my wife and I with a small team of passionate outdoor educators. It is our dream to teach and inspire kids to connect with the outdoors and grow into well-rounded individuals through the use of the outdoors and adventure based activities. This is a growing concern within our busy lives that we take time for our children and help them to slow down, to reconnect with nature and develop personal skills that will help them into the future. The benefits of Outdoor Education are numerous and long lasting and will help the youth of today to grow into well-rounded, thoughtful adults. The Cambroon region and the Conondale National Park is a great place to teach students about the natural environment and to encourage stewardship of the land and it is one of the reasons we purchased the property. Our development application proposes to provide centre based accommodation and remote area camping for primary and secondary school students from public and private schools across south-east Queensland as part of their curriculum based learning. We propose to build an amenities block, kitchen and dining hall, accommodation in six large geodesic dome tents in stage 1 and additional six dome tents in two years time. The full application will see accommodation for 204 people on site. The outdoor education centre will provide single day and multi-day programmes mainly during weekdays however may also occur across weekends. We have worked hard to create a happy community with our current neighbours at Woodford and have strong friendships with a number of them. Uniting Church services are held on the second Saturday of the month at St John Bosco’s at 4p.m. An ecumenical study group will meet on the first Thursday of the month at 10.30am in St Luke’s Shed, starting on 4 Feb. The group will explore and discuss “Come and See” an interesting book by Dr Kevin Treston on spirituality. KENILWORTH ARTS PLANS FUN FESTIVITIES IN 2016

enilworth Arts looks forward to bringing several new events to Kenilworth in 2016. While the popular Kenilworth Celebrates! arts festival, held over the October long weekend, will remain the flagship art event in town, a greater range of workshops, markets and art experiences will be offered throughout the coming year. At a recent planning workshop, other community organisations joined us to look for ways to collaborate in bringing a range of arts-related activities to town. “It was great to hear suggestions from other groups as to how we can collaborate to improve the community’s experience and participation in arts activities, while finding a more efficient way to manage and promote our events,” said Kenilworth Arts President, Mary-Jane Weld. So, residents and visitors to Kenilworth can look forward to more frequent art workshops throughout the year, covering a greater range of topics. A series of ‘makers’ markets’ is also planned for 2016, along with opportunities to enjoy and take part in various performing arts. Our regular programme of music club, mahjong, garden club and film friends will continue to keep members entertained and involved and we welcome suggestions for other arts-related activities. We are collaborating with Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest for our first event of the year and warmly invite the community to join us for an Aussie Chinese New Year Dinner at Kenilworth Hotel to welcome in the Year of the Monkey on Saturday 6 February 2016. “KANDANGA FARM” CONCEPT BRINGS THE GATE CLOSER TO THE PLATE

ver 100 food-lovers including some top Queensland chefs, hospitality business owners and food producers met in a hayshed at Kandanga, Monday 7 December 2015, for a 100% locally grown Christmas lunch (related photos on page 8 of the buffet and Taylor with Christmas crayfish inset) designed as a first step in putting Kandanga Farm on the map as a food hub for southern Queensland. “The great thing about Monday’s event was we could sample some of the best local food ever assembled but it was prepared by producers for the foodies – not the other way around. Chefs Matt Golinski and Martin Duncan were there to taste what our customers and other producers had prepared – and the result was spectacular”, said Kandanga Farm’s Amber Scott. Tim and Amber Scott have diversified their Bos Rural Supplies store (also at Kandanga) to add value to their customers’ businesses by providing direct linkages with the food world. “We realised quickly that there is a demand from the large population base we have within a couple of hours of here for ethically produced, organic or chemical free food,” said Mrs Scott, “luckily we happen to know a lot of people keen to supply such markets – our customers! We now are developing strategies, and running events to link the two and add value for everyone.” “Running this type of event cements Bos Rural as a long term partner to those of us growing food in the region”, commented local free range pig producer Phil Stringer. ary Valley Country Harvest Co-operative’s annual Summer School has attracted the interest of major bank, ANZ, and its Seeds of Renewal programme. Now in its third successful year, the Summer School offers a two day programme of workshops across a range of subject streams. This approach underpins the philosophy of Mary Valley Country Harvest Co-operative which aims to support and educate farming enterprises by providing ongoing educational support, offering distribution solutions for small area farms to increase their production using best practises. “Members have experienced increased sales and improved the viability of their business by diversifying their crop and by initiating a co-ordinated approach to production to minimise wastage and maintain production,” said secretary and coordinator of the school, Elaine Bradley. “We want to thank ANZ and BMRG in recognising the necessary support needed so that farmers can diversify and survive in agriculture”. This year sees major guest speakers Jerry Coleby-Williams from Gardening Australia and Tammi Jonas, President of Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance share their philosophy on growing food in an ever changing climate and making ethical choices when it come to food production. Darryl has provided heaps of support and advice in the building of our equipment shed, fit out of our kitchen and the building of the shade awning. All have helped at fundraising/ catering events. Neil Holt has often been our worker at events and Lynda helps at events. Well deserved! Special mention goes to outgoing President, Anna Henbury, who has generously served our club in the role for a number of years. As with the Gillis family, having Anna as President, brought with it the support and valuable contribution of all her family. The free BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast mobile service will set up behind the hall at the Kenilworth Showgrounds, Elizabeth Street from 1 to 3 March 2016. When the BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast service was in Kenilworth two years ago, more than 50 local women had their breast screen performed at this mobile service. BreastScreen Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said many of these women would now be due for their bi-annual rescreen. “It is not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can participate in this free screening programme. There is no need for women to put off having a breast screen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient and free. A doctor’s referral is not required. Make an appointment now,” Ms Hart said. A new footpath is to be constructed to connect Main Street with the bridge crossing in Kandanga along eastern side of Amamoor-Kandanga Road. This will be a welcome addition to the town. NATIONAL HONOUR FOR STUDENT WITH THE WRITE STUFF

atelyn Dyer, (pictured right) a Year 6 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, was honoured in early December 2015 with a medal at the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Medal Presentation Ceremony at Brisbane’s Convention Centre. Commonly referred to as the University of New South Wales (UNSW) competitions, Katelyn received the medal for achieving the highest score in the Year 6 English competition and was the only recipient of a medal for Year 6 English in Queensland. According to Mrs Sandy Hardy, Middle Years Curriculum Coordinator at Good Shepherd, this is an extraordinary outcome, especially given Katelyn also received Distinctions in the Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing competitions EVENTPIX.COM as well. Mrs Hardy said “Good Shepherd had participated in the competition for over 14 years, and students did exceptionally well this year. To win the ICAS Medal is outstanding; her result in English was the highest in the nation!” When asked about her achievement, Katelyn was very down to earth and focused on the experience of the competitions more than the outcome. ‘‘The UNSW competitions are fun to participate in because they include various interesting and challenging questions. I also really enjoy competing against students from across the whole of Australia, not just those in my class or school,” said Katelyn.
