C
CHRISTMAS IN KENILWORTH
hristmas celebrations in Kenilworth district have long been children centred. The Daily Mail (16 November 1923, page 13) reported that “...the school committee has decided to hold a breaking-up function. There will also be a Christmas tree.” [Historical note: The article refers to the original Kenilworth School later to become Kenilworth Lower when the township school was opened in 1924]. The newspaper report of festivities in the area in the Nambour Chronicle (21 December 1923, page 11) reads:- “The local school dispersed for the Christmas vacation on Friday last. The usual picnic in the afternoon was dispensed with, and a concert was given by the school children in the evening in the hall, assisted by the Choral Society. A large Christmas tree well laden with toys adorned the stage and during the half time interval these were handed round to the scholars by Father Christmas.” Christmas celebrations did not always go as planned as is indicated by the report in the Nambour Chronicle (31 December 1926, page 9):- “The Christmas Tree entertainment which was to have been held on December 22 was postponed owing to the heavy rain. It will now be held on January 5, 1927 at the Upper Kenilworth Hall.” The celebrations at Lower Kenilworth continued for many years with a Christmas tree and gift distribution as reported in the Nambour Chronicle on 2 November 1928, page 4; 10 October 1930, page 4 and 1 December 1933, page 7. The report in the Nambour Chronicle 10 December 1948, page 3, reads:- “A very large crowd attended the annual Xmas tree and dance arranged by the Lower Kenilworth School and held in the Lower Kenilworth Hall on Saturday. Mr E. Davie was M.C. and Wagner’s orchestra supplied the music. The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Father Christmas who distributed gifts to the excited children.” [Historical note: I was one of those excited children and those memories are still beautiful]. Christmas 1950 was the first public Christmas tree held in the township of Kenilworth organised by Terry and Daphne Cosgrove from the Kenilworth Newsagency. In his book Remember the Good Times, Terry Cosgrove recalls “Santa had something like three hundred gifts to give and it was very successful ... We were already planning for the next one… and had started putting in Christmas stock and taking orders from as early as August (1951) onwards.” The public Christmas tree continues to this day in the showgrounds, still a magical time for children and children at heart. Kenilworth also had some celebrity visitors at Christmas as reported in Truth to Tell column in the Truth newspaper, Sunday 31 Dec. 1950, page 13:“Deputy Premier Vince Gair took family along to Kenilworth to spend holiday week with Mick and Nell Lane at the Kenilworth Hotel.” Glad Christmas tidings and joy to all !!! KENILWORTH’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS EVE PARTY
I
t’s that time of year again with Christmas just around the corner and we have confirmation that Santa will once again be dropping into the Kenilworth Showgrounds, on Saturday 24 December, for a visit to the annual Kenilworth Christmas Eve Party! A festive night with lots of family fun to be enjoyed. The committee has carefully selected a range of rides to suit all ages with the return of the giant slide, jumping castle, cup and saucer ride, rock climbing wall and the ever popular trackless train. Due to popular demand we have also added two face painters to the mix. There is something for the whole family to enjoy! For a relaxing Christmas Eve, bring your picnic rugs, chairs, a drink for the adults and kick back to enjoy all of the free entertainment. A barbecue dinner will be available, including steak burgers, hamburgers, sausage on bread and hot chips. This year the fun starts from 4:00pm with Santa set to arrive at 6:00pm. Santa’s special gifts can be sourced from any “Santa Shops Here” location. Look out for the signs in our local business windows. The committee looks forward to seeing you on Christmas Eve and we wish everyone a very merry Christmas.

KE NILWORTH ________________________ STUNNING SUCCESS FOR 2016 HIGH TEA
W
CHICKS IN THE STICKS
ith the backing of ticket holders, generous businesses and dedicated supporters, Chicks in the Sticks was able to donate more than $7500 to the Queensland Cancer Fund for more research to find a cure for breast cancer. The country race meeting themed high tea in October was a real hit with people already claiming the date for next year’s function. Chicks in the Sticks will be held on Sunday, 16 July, 2017 at Yabbaloumba Retreat. As a committee we have so many people to thank. Of course first are Lloyd and Barb Campbell who provided their function centre “The Shed” to us so we can stage the high tea. And what would a high tea be without scrumptious eats. The ladies from the Maleny CWA excelled themselves and there was nothing but compliments for their scones, cup cakes, slices, savouries and so much more. Our raffles and charity auction were real winners and largely because people were so generous with their donations which meant people were happy to buy tickets or bid. The horse race gave everyone a good laugh, the atmosphere was friendly, people dressed beautifully and the result was a great time all round. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us.

KENILWORTH PONY CLUB
he last event on our pony club calendar was the Zone 6 Gymkhana held at the Nambour showgrounds on 6 November. Our club was represented by Rachael Law, Lana Gluis and Catriona Summers who placed well in the March Past. Both Catriona and Lana placed 4th in their respective age groups and Rachael received a trophy for the fastest flag race of the day. Reflecting on the year, our Chief Instructor, Sonia Law, said: “2016 has seen many members continue their attendance at a variety of events throughout the year including clinics, camps, showjumping, dressage, combined training, one day events, Hunter trials, campdraft, sporting, and mounted games. They have represented our club well displaying good sportsmanship and great riding.” Our President, Rachael Law, said: “To all our riders, be proud of what you have accomplished this year and may 2017 bring the success you all deserve!” We are winding down for the year now, looking forward to our award presentations and break-up party after the Annual General Meeting on 3 December. If you are interested in what pony club has to offer please contact the club either via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/KenilworthPC/ or email kenilworth@pcaq.asn.au ▼ Pictured Rachael and Mysti receiving the Noel Sproxton Memorial Trophy for the fastest flag race of the day. POSTAL NOTES
ith Christmas just around the corner, Kenilworth Post Office is gearing up to meet all your Christmas needs – postage, of course; the best way to send presents, and a wide range of “value for money” gift ideas. Postage rates: Australia Post continues to offer a reduced postage rate for Christmas ‘card only’ letters. For a standard sized card, it is 65 cents (instead of the normal $1.00) and for large cards the postage is $1.30 (instead of the normal $2.00). Holders of Concession stamps can continue to use their 60c stamps for letters as well as Christmas cards. International ‘card only’ letters will vary in cost depending on weight and size, and their destination. International stamps are GST free and therefore you should not use Domestic stamps (which include GST) on International letters or parcels. International and Domestic Christmas stamps are now on sale. Gifts: Kenilworth Post Office has a wide selection of gifts available for all ages. As we are a Licensed Post Office, we offer a wider range of gifts than just those from the Australia Post catalogue. Our motto has always been good quality at a low price. Santa even gets some of his ideas for presents from the Post Office. We have lots of small gifts which would make ideal stocking fillers. If all other ideas fail, make a selection from our range of gift cards. Kenilworth welcomes Santa Claus: Once again, Kenilworth will be holding a Christmas Eve party at the Kenilworth showgrounds Saturday, 24 December. One of the highlights is Santa arriving at 6pm to distribute presents to all the children. By visiting any of the shops in Kenilworth (including the Post Office) that sell gifts and are displaying the ‘Santa Shops Here’ signs, details can then be provided to ensure that Santa does not miss your child at the Christmas party. Letters to Santa Claus: We have placed a special ‘Santa’ mailing box just inside the Post Office door for the little ones. Santa has a special address again this year – Santa Claus, North Pole, Post Code 9999. This year, Australia Post is providing a special postcard which children can use to post to Santa. These are available from the Post Office. Remember that Santa receives a lot of mail just before Christmas so by placing the full name and address of the sender on the back of the envelope, it is highly likely that Santa will find time to send back a postcard if he receives it at least one week before Christmas. Finally, as we head into the Christmas season, we would like to remind our customers that the mail leaves Kenilworth each weekday at 5:00pm. Please be considerate by not parking in the Mail Contractor’s designated spot after 4:00pm, as he will have a huge amount of mail to load onto his truck by 5:00 pm. Robyn, Michael and family extend their best wishes to all their valued customers for the Christmas season. We wish you a happy and safe Christmas, and look forward to seeing you again in 2017. Kenilworth Post Office is open all year round except for public holidays. Opening hours are: Monday – Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm Saturday 9:00am to 11:30am

enilworth First Response would like to thank the Kenilworth Showgrounds and Hall Committee for their generous cheque towards the Kenilworth First Response Group. The First Responders are a community self-funded group of volunteers who are on call 24/7 responding to 000 call outs . The funds received from the annual Chook Chase weekend have ensured that we are able to maintain the running cost of our two vehicles.
KFR TRAINING DAY AT ISAAC MOORE PARK As the sun rose on the 15 October 2016 members of the Kenilworth community would have noticed a car accident at Isaac Moore Park. The Kenilworth First Responders held a training day for Kenilworth, Imbil and Kilkivan First Responders and had the assistance of Queensland Fire and Rescue Service from Kenilworth and Imbil, Imbil and Kenilworth State Emergency Service, also Queensland Ambulance Service.

The training day consisted in a three vehicle road traffic crash involving a total of 12 patients. With a range of conditions and patients that QFRS required to use the ‘Jaws of Life’ to remove patients from cars. This and other training days would not be possible without the assistance of many people who assist us. So on behalf of Kenilworth First Response I would like to thank our patients Kieron, Sean and David Bradford, Yanni Henderson, Sara and Kyle Engle, David and Leonie Lindsay, Catherine Leitch and Rhino Towing; your willingness to volunteer your time in assisting us is greatly appreciated. These training days continue to allow us to increase our knowledge so that we are prepared for anything when sadly it ever occurs in real life. A big thank you to Linda Green, our makeup lady who prepared the patients and made the injuries look realistic, and thanks to Chris Childs for organising our training day. CHRISTMAS BARGAINS AT CENT SALE
he Gheerulla Hall committee will hold their annual Cent Sale and sausage sizzle on Friday 9 December commencing at 5:00pm. There will be lots of bargains and fun for everyone. All proceeds will help repair the hall to a standard for general community use. For those who don’t know how it works tickets are sold in sheets with 20 to be used for bidding on items. • All items are placed on tables with a container at the end of each table for placing your bidding tickets. • As many tickets as you like can be dropped into the container, particularly if there is something there you specially want. The winning bid is drawn by the MC. There are plenty of opportunities to pick up bargains. Separate prizes will be drawn for those who haven’t had successful bids. We hope that most people will go home with a treasure or more. The more items, the better the chances of winning. Your help is needed. If you have any unused new items, or if you can bake some cakes or make jam or chutney or some handicaft items they would be much appreciated. After a five week hiatus of being extremely sick and battling a serious infection, he is home. You may have noticed the Rocksgate yard had to be shut during these five weeks but we are super pleased to say we are back and we are open for business (albeit John is taking things a bit slower). We would like to sincerely apologise to all those who were inconvenienced during this time. As Christmas is now only a few weeks away we have the perfect gift for the loved one in your life... a gorgeous pile of cow poo, chook poo for the wife and a load of gravel for hubby to spread by hand. (Don’t laugh but one wonderful husband has pre-ordered, as he lovingly puts it “...one big pile of poo for the wife for Christmas thanks!” – we are assured it is for her garden. All our soils have been beautifully screened and mixed to make the perfect blend of premium soil. Great for gardens, top dressing lawns and best of all for growing top producing veges, flowers and trees. Our once neglected frangipani tree is now thriving and abundantly blooming after we introduced our soil blend and gave it a good drink, giving some well deserved nutrients during this dry time. If we can be of any assistance in working out what you need to get that job under way, just give us a call. We can easily deliver to you, saving you the hard work and hassle. Open six days a week, opening hours, Monday to Friday 7:00am to 2:30pm and Saturday 8:00am to 1:00pm. As usual for the jobs requiring different times, give us a call to arrange 0417 700 228, 1810 Obi Obi Road, Kenilworth. Mel and John from Rocksgate

MARY VALLEY _____________________ IN THE TOURISM SPOTLIGHT MARY VALLEY COUNTRY
H
igh praise from Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) CEO, Simon Latchford, was given to Mary Valley Country marketing on 22 November, 2016 for showcasing the region with new marketing tools aligning with current tourism marketing approaches. Mr Latchford was attending the launch of the new Mary Valley map, business and community directory and website as guest speaker. He spoke about the visuals used across all the publications as perfectly aligned with the most recent approaches by VSC to highlight diversity of experiences to appeal to all interests. ‘Mary Valley Country – come out to play’ branding was certainly in the spotlight at the launch of the latest in three marketing initiatives by Mary Valley Inc. (MVI) who manage tourism marketing for the valley. Attendees at the launch also included Cory Gale, Marketing Operations Manager from Visit Sunshine Coast, Mayor Cr Mick Curran, Tourism Portfolio Councilor James Cochrane and Destination Gympie Region Manager, Andrew Saunders. Officials were then taken on a bus tour across the Mary Valley stopping in at various locations and businesses to highlight the product. VSC CEO Simon Latchford said that is was valuable to see the depth of Mary Valley tourism products firsthand. “As the regional tourism body, we encompass the Mary

We look forward to working more closely with MVI and local tourism businesses becoming members of our organisation, so we can continue to tell the world the region’s story.” MVI Chairman, Julie Worth, said MVI worked closely in partnership with other groups including the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce who also contributed to the website rebuild soon to be activated for the Christmas holiday period. “We all work together for the people and businesses in the Mary Valley” she said, adding that “Simon Latchford noted a high level of energy and cooperation was evident in the people he had met on the day.” Gympie Regionial Cr James Cochrane (Tourism portfolio), said he was impressed with the relationship that Mary Valley Country had built with Visit Sunshine Coast and looked forward to strengthening the relationship in the future. MV ‘RATTLER’ IN PARK MODE
ympie Regional Council has missed out on State Government regional funding for the Mary Valley Rattler. Member for Gympie, Tony Perrett, said that he has received confirmation from the Minister for State Development, Dr Lynham, that the Council had not been short listed for funding in Round Two of the Building Our Regions Programme. “As there was no allocation for this project in the 2016-2017 State Budget I wrote to the Minister because I had been advised that the Council was not shortlisted in the funding programme which is supposed to fund regional infrastructure projects. I also asked the Minister to provide advice regarding the application, the reasons for not being short listed, when another opportunity will arise to secure funding, and what the GRC needs to do to secure funding for this project. While the Minister did not provide any information on the reasons for missing out he said that further details regarding the timing of Round Three will be announced soon. The Rattler’s Business Case was completed in March and identified that $10.8 million is required to rebuild the existing infrastructure to a standard that will require minimal maintenance expenditure to allow the MVR to operate as a viable stand-alone tourist venture,” Mr Perrett said.

C OMMUNITY ________________________ CR GREG ROGERSON – DIV 10 – SUNSHINE COAST Phone (07) 5441 8368 – Mobile 0419 712 546 he recent community workshop for the Kenilworth Designer Dunny project was extremely positive and constructive. We had everyone from engineering consultants to community members and also winning designer Michael Lennie in attendance at this meeting and I’m pleased to report that we’re continuing to move positively forward with this legitimate and viable project that takes into account all the artistic values of the winning design, along with the demanding site requirements at Isaac Moore Park. Kenilworth Medical Centre It has been a couple of years now since we’ve had a doctor operating in Kenilworth. Unfortunately the cessation of a doctor operating in town coincided with the end of the Flexi link Hinterland public bus service – a situation that makes it very difficult for many of the town’s residents to readily access medical care. Numerous doctors and medical centre operators have investigated the reestablishment of a practice in Kenilworth but two issues have prevented this. Firstly, ‘accreditation’ in regards to the building where a medical practice would operate from. The current operating guidelines stipulate a far different establishment to that previously operated in yesteryear. The second sticking point relates to the economic viability of such a venture, given that only around 500 people reside in Kenilworth and the Primary Health Network Association deem that at least 1000 residents per doctor are approximate numbers relating to ongoing ‘viability’. Off-setting this is the fact that the town is relatively isolated and home to a great many aging residents who are unable to commute. So there is a definite need to have a medical centre in the town of Kenilworth. Member for Fairfax, Mr Ted O’Brien has lobbied the Federal Government incessantly over the last nine months in an effort to obtain financial assistance to remedy this void. On Friday 25 November the Federal Government announced a $13.1 million funding opportunity for rural and remote areas, Australia-wide. We have until 13 December to lodge an expression of interest. My proposal is for a medical centre to be established adjoining the back of the town Information Centre and for the Federal Government and council to contribute 50% each towards the costs of setting it up. The leasing of this medical centre would be extended to the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce and Community Association to offer a doctor a lower rent of the facility in order to make the practice financially viable at present and into the future. Given that the nearest medical centres to Kenilworth are all situated at least half an hour away at Imbil, Eumundi, Mapleton and Maleny, I believe it is imperative Council does all it can to enable the town’s residents to be self-sufficient and safe in this regard. So pending a favourable response from residents at a community meeting on Tuesday 6 December, I’ll be seeking council endorsement to lodge an expression of interest submission to the Federal Government for a slice of this $13.1 million that is available for important community health projects in rural and remote areas. There’ll be a four week period from 13 December for processing and from there the Federal Government will select the funding recipients – a list that hope will include the proposed Kenilworth medical centre. So in the meantime, my aim is to provide a short-term solution to enable THANK YOU to all a doctor to start a service in Kenilworth our valued customers as soon as possible. for your fantastic support. As this is my final We will be closed for Christmas holidays. column for 2016 I’d CLOSE Sat 24th Dec & like to wish everyone a very merry and REOPEN Tues 17 Jan 2017 safe Christmas and above all, a prosperous and extremely healthy new year. COMMUNITY _______________________ NEW SUSTAINABILITY GRANTS FOR GROUPS CLOSE 13 DECEMBER
M
ember for Nicklin Peter Wellington MP has called on Nicklin community groups to apply for funding under the recently opened Conservation of the Community Sustainability Action grants. “We have amongst us many community groups that work together to improve our environment and this is a great opportunity for these groups to apply for a grant of up to $25,000”, Peter said Projects funded under this grant programme include: • measures to improve the energy and water efficiency of community facilities • installation of community gardens and community compost systems • greening of Queensland’s urban spaces through revegetation activities and installation of green shading infrastructure on community facilities •conservation of Queensland’s natural resources through weeding and revegetation activities, pest control and litter and marine debris collection. Eligible groups include: Landcare, environmental and conservation organisations, Indigenous groups, Rotary and Lions clubs, private and public school parents and citizens’ groups, community sporting and recreational associations and show societies to name a few. Community groups have until the 13 December 2016, to apply for round one funding. All details visit:https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/funding/ community-sustainability/ or through my office 5406 4100. Kenilworth Eumundi Road update The Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently undertaken a review of the speed limit along the Eumundi– Kenilworth Road on the 100km/h section from the Bunya Road roundabout to Browns Creek Road. The review was a result of requests from residents wanting further reductions of the current 100kph speed limit. In February next year the speed limit between Bunya Road roundabout to Browns Creek Road will be reduced from 100 to 90km/h. Kenilworth Ambulance Station update The Tender for the construction of the Kenilworth Ambulance Station will be called this month and it is expected the contract will be awarded to the successful tenderer in January 2017. When completed our ambulance station will include: a two bay plant room for two ambulances, a three bay carport for two first responder vehicles, a two bedroom relief quarters suitable for up to three staff, day room, office, storage, training space and a small treatment room. Mapleton National Park I am delighted with the announcement that work had now been completed on the upgrade to the Mapleton National Park day use area. Our hinterland of the Sunshine Coast has so much to offer visitors and locals and I am pleased to see the State Government allocated $250,000 to improve this area. The money was spent on: an upgrade of the Multi-User Trail Network, a review and standardisation of signage used in the area, construction of parking areas for various user groups including spaces to accommodate horse floats, trail bikers, mountain bikers and walkers, as well as the installation of gates to stop illegal vehicle access on multi-use trails. Merry Christmas Jenny and I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. Our office will be closed for a couple of weeks over the Christmas and new year period, so that my staff can share this special time with their families and loved ones. If you need assistance with any State Govt matters during this time call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

IMBIL POLICE REPORT NOVEMBER
T
he public are the police and the police are the public” was one of nine policing principles which were used by the Metropolitan Police Service in London in 1829. In 2016 with the advent of cheap and available digital recording devices the public can be their own traffic police officer and actively contribute to policing issues such as road safety. Dash cams and other recording devices are regularly used to capture offences being committed which are bought to the attention of the Police and subsequently investigated. They can be purchased for less than $100 and are common amongst professional drivers who realise their value in recording events such as road crashes and traffic offences and road rage behaviours. There is no need to confront other drivers and footage can be delivered to your local Police Station which can then commence an investigation and potential prosecution action taken. A number of thefts have been occurring in Imbil and it is again suggested that taking the time to lock your car and house will decrease your chances of being a victim of property crime. A very high percentage of the crimes reported to Police involve unsecured homes and vehicles. It only takes a few seconds and can save your property from being stolen by opportunistic thieves. The Imbil Rural Watch meeting for October was held on 7 November with the guest speaker being Captain Iain Blain from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. With the hottest time of the year coming up it was great to get advice about fire plans and safety. The final meeting will be 5 December. Have a look at the Imbil Rural Watch Facebook page for further details and timely alerts. The Mary Valley Blue Light Association held its last blue light disco for 2016 at the Kandanga Hall on 18 November. The Blue Light Association recently acquired some impressive lighting effects which impressed the attendees. For more information about next year’s events check out the Mary Valley Blue Light Association’s Facebook page. Finally congratulations to Senior Constable Richard Naylor who has retired from a 37 year career with Queensland Police Service. Senior Constable Naylor has been a local face at Gympie Station for nearly twenty years. We wish him all the best for his retirement.
