COMMUNITY ________________________ CHEERIO FROM THE CHURCHES
KENILWORTH CHEESE, WINE & FOOD FEST
ll folks everywhere must be giving thanks for the rain after such a dry summer! But not so for Cyclone Debbie and the devastation that occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the affected areas. The Maleny Anglican Parish welcomes Rev’d Jeanette Jamieson who will be commissioned as parish priest at St George’s, Maleny on 5 May at 7pm with Bishop Jeremy Greaves celebrating. A farewell to Fr Harry Reuss and Mrs Gillian Reuss will be held at St Luke’s Kenilworth on Saturday 22 April at 4pm. Community members are most welcome. Services for Holy Week and Easter in Kenilworth are:St Luke’s Anglican: Palm Sunday 9 April, 9:00am; Good Friday 14 April, 11:00am The Way of the Cross; Easter Day 16 April, 11:00am Eucharist. St John Bosco Catholic: Maundy Thursday 13 April, 6:00pm Ecumenical Service with The Washing of the Feet and shared supper afterwards; Easter Day 16 April, 11:00 am Mass. Christian Meditation (9:30am) and Lenten Studies(10:30am) continue every Thursday at St John Bocso in Kenilworth. On Sunday 26 March, Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Anglican churches. This day has its origins in the 16th Century in England when Lenten rules were relaxed so people could return to their “mother” church for a service. By the 17th Century the day was a public holiday when servants living away from home could be re-united with their families, often taking with them a special cake called Simnel cake. The tradition is now carried on with the distribution of slices of Simnel cake to those at church on Mothering Sunday, a time when we think of families.
EASTER SATURDAY 15 APRIL 2017 he Kenilworth Food Fest is ready to take over the township park and Cheese Factory site from 7am with over 40 stalls including five boutique wineries, featuring a range of wines from traditional to organic and of course the very popular cheese tasting to compliment the wine tasting. Stalls will feature an eclectic mix of fine foods as well as food demonstrations with Primal Influence and chef Peter Wolfe. Those friendly camels will be there for rides along with Old Macdonalds Farm animals; for little people there’s the Great Cheester Egg Hunt (10:00am) in the enclosed playground and Cheese Rolling all day competitions as well. The full list of stalls and programme entertainment is on our website www.kenilworthfoodfest.org.au A relatively new feature is the Easter Hat Parade, for all ages, around 11:00am near the Cheese Rolling competition area. Please gather there! The Hat Parade will have four sections with 1st prize and runner up in each section. Entry is free, so bring along your fabulous hand decorated hat! Thanking all our volunteers in advance and if you would be able to help too, especially early around 6:30am with the bale seating and pop-up gazebos, this would be greatly appreciated! You will be giving great service to your community and helping us share the best local producers with thousands of visitors. Please contact Graeme 5472 3156, helpers get a free lunch, drinks, coffee and ice cream. Easter Saturday will be a great day in Kenilworth for the whole family to enjoy. See you there.

GARDENERS GET GROWING AGAIN
fter the long-awaited rain, Kenilworth gardeners are looking at their gardens with renewed interest and enthusiasm. The Kenilworth Garden Club (part of Kenilworth Arts) will start activities this year with a visit to a delightful town garden on Friday 28 April. At this garden, you’ll hear about soil improvement, plant propagation and garden design. The visit starts at 9am and will include plant swaps and morning tea. The address is available through the contacts below. All gardeners are welcome. Other activities planned by the garden club this year include a ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ workshop and a visit to a colourful country spring garden. We’re also planning some excursions to gardens further afield in our region. The garden club organised the very successful Arty Farty Garden Party last year with four open country gardens and a self-guided tour of town gardens. We plan to run this event again on Sunday 1 October as part of ArtsFest Kenilworth and any suggestions, ideas or contributions to this event will be most welcome. If you’re interested in joining the garden club, or for more information about our activities, please contact maryjaneweld@gmail.com or call Mary-Jane 0402 008 330. Happy gardening! KENILWORTH HISTORY ______ HONOUR BOARDS
T
he Kenilworth township new War Memorial is a magnificent tribute to the men and women of this district who have served in the defence forces. It must be remembered that the district was at the forefront of honouring their sons as can be seen from the newspaper reports:The first of the district Honour Boards to be unveiled, Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, 5.10.1917, page 2, read:“On the afternoon of 4th instant, our member Mr H.F. Walker, in the presence of a large number of people unveiled the Obi Obi Honour Board. In the course of his remarks he dwelt upon the splendid efforts of country districts enrolling men for overseas service, and urged on all present to do everything in their power for those who had gone, and not to forget the soldiers on their return to Australia. The Honour Board contains twelve names and portraits of men enlisted from here, two of whom are unfortunately never to return.” Historic Note:- There were four young men from Obi Obi who did not return. The Carnell brothers William and Pritchard were killed in action in late 1917. Their photographs have been included in the duplicate Honour Board now hanging in Obi Obi Hall. The following is a report from The Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser published 1 March, 1918 edition, page 5:“The ceremony of unveiling the new Honour Board which the residents of the district have placed in the local (Kenilworth Farmers’ Assembly now Gheerulla Hall) took place on Saturday afternoon last, Mr H.F. Walker officiating. Mr H. Pickering presided and in a few words introduced the speakers, the first of whom Sgt Glasgow, as an old campaigner, addressed the meeting at some length. Mr Walker, amidst applause then rose and made a very affecting speech, after which he pulled the cord which removed the large Union Jack, whilst the audience rose and sang the National Anthem, Miss Hassall presiding at the piano. After the ceremony Mr Walker on behalf of the residents spoke a few words of welcome to Pte W. Sharry, who had just been returned invalided from the front, and Pte Sharry responded somewhat feelingly.” The Honour Board (left) is of hammered copper of a very ornamental design, the names of the volunteers being placed each on a metal place attached thereto whilst underneath is a metal dedication as follows: “Erected by the Residents of Kenilworth District”. The whole has a silky oak background.
Historic Note:- The Kenilworth community also planted pine trees at the entrance to the local cemetery in honour of World War I veterans. These have since been removed and replaced by an avenue of bottle trees. We will remember them.
SIMON MACIVER AND WILLIAM (BILL) URQUHART
S
imon MacIver and William (Bill) Urquhart were cousins who grew up together on neighbouring crofts in Naast, Ross Shire, in the Highlands of NW Scotland. They spoke Gaelic at home and only spoke English once they started school. In the 1920s, following World War 1, they decided to venture to Australia and sailed for Melbourne. They spent a few years there and then moved to Kenilworth in the 1930s working in the sawmill and then growing bananas. Simon had seen active service in World War I in the Royal Navy. Bill enlisted in the Australian Army in WWII from Kenilworth and his name is on a plaque on the Kenilworth War Memorial. Simon and Bill moved to Brisbane around 1950 and remained close for the rest of their lives. While Bill never married, Simon married Marie Passlow from Booloumba. COMMUNITY __________ Cover Story _______ KENILWORTH ARTS COUNCIL
H
“THIS AND THAT”
ello, KAC, what are you up to? Well, a bit of this and a bit of that! The committee has started planning for the big annual event, Kenilworth ArtsFest in September/October but also for smaller happenings during the year to involve our membership and the community. Stewart Dore, President, commented, “I am excited about the work our new committee is prepared to do, especially in bringing visitors to Kenilworth for the benefit of the whole community. However, we need supporters and volunteers – that backbone of any committee. So if you have a bit of spare time and enjoy a bit of fun, do come and join us.” The Makers and Growers Markets will be held on Easter Sunday in the Town Park with a variety of goodies available. There will be similar markets in August, October and December. The current raffle of a painting will be drawn at Easter. On the drawing board are a members’ morning or afternoon tea and also some social gatherings where folk can work on any art or craft project they have begun. Elaine Bradley from Dagun Markets calls these projects “UFOs” – Un Finished Objects. A great idea for social, creative fun – all welcome! This year, the Arty Farty Garden Party will be held during the Kenilworth ArtsFest. This drew a lot of interest last year and will be an added attraction for the 2017 festival. The Garden Club is holding a series of garden visits and workshops during the year – the first being Friday 28 April (see page 3). As you know the French celebrate Bastille Day on 14 July. KAC and friends are celebrating Bastille Day with a French flavoured dinner on 15 July at Kenilworth Hotel. At this stage, we can’t promise any Can Can dancers! Any offers? Our secretary, Lisa, is putting out the call to anyone in the community interested in forming a community choir, initially just for the enjoyment of singing. If you are interested, please contact Lisa on 5472 3223 or call in and see Lisa in the KAC office on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30am till 12 noon.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX – M’DORE ELECTORATE OFFICE 07 5479 2800 RATTLING FORWARD t’s great to hear the Mary Valley Rattler is getting back on track and may be operational again by December. The steam train is such a cherished local relic and its 40km route showcases the valley’s beautiful hills and country towns like Dagun, Amamoor, Kandanga and Imbil. The Rattler Railway Company Limited and Gympie Regional Council have been working hard to re-open the popular tourist attraction which stopped services in 2012 and it’s great to hear it’s moving full steam ahead.
I
HELPING THE REGIONS People living in regional Australia will get the attention they deserve with the Federal government’s new Regional Ministerial Taskforce, headed by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull – addressing issues like employment, education, communications and health. Our regions are responsible for almost threequarters of Australia’s exports, most gas and electricity production, half the nation’s tourism and most of our food and fibre production. Regions deserve investment and support. LEST WE FORGET A meaningful day for many Australians is Anzac Day on 25 April. I will be attending the 9am service in Kenilworth and hope to see you there. This year we continue to mark a century of service and sacrifice from World War I, in particular The Third Battle of Ypres, which was the major Flanders offensive of 1917. Australian Divisions participated in the battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle and the First Battle of Passchendaele. We also remember the Charge of the Light Horse at Beersheba a century ago. This year is also 75 years since some major events in the Second World War – the bombing of Darwin, the fall of Singapore and Malaya and the battles of the Coral Sea, Milne Way, Midway and Kokoda. We must also acknowledge the 70th anniversary of Australia’s peacekeepers who have served in dangerous conflict zones.

KENILWORTH PONY CLUB
n Sunday, 5 March 2017 at the Maleny Pony Club Official Dressage Day, Caeli Hinkler riding Arabella represented Kenilworth Pony Club, competing for the first time at official level. While not placing in the top ten, her test results enabled her to achieve two (of the three needed) qualifications to be able to compete at State level. Alice Gillis, Jodi Gillis and Amaya Smithson competed at the Samford Valley Official Combined Training and Dressage Day on 12 March. Amaya (riding Molly) came 2nd overall in the unofficial Preliminary Dressage. While Alice and Jodi did not place overall in their classes, it still was a good day out proudly representing Kenilworth Pony Club. If you are interested in what pony club has to offer please contact the club either via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/KenilworthPC/ or email kenilworth@pcaq.asn.au After a long period of dry, many of us welcomed the much needed rain to fill our dams (for our horses), creeks and tanks, despite a few postponed and cancelled events. We hope that everyone was safe and did not suffer any hardship as a result of the recent storms.
You are all welcome and invited to attend the KENILWORTH & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & CITIZENS INC.

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Bells Creek, Cambroon, Coolabine, Conondale, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Gheerulla, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Landsborough, Peachester, Reesville, Valdora, Witta, Yandina Creek areas from April 24-May 26 2017. KENILWORTH FIRST RESPONSE
was recently asked “How does Kenilworth First Response operate?” We are all advanced first aiders and are trained fortnightly by QAS paramedics to respond to emergency and trauma situations. We have two cars which are equipped with radios, drugs, oxygen, defibrillator and necessary first aid. On a 000 call out the Queensland Ambulance communication centre will activate us. Our role is to provide initial treatment to our patients while at the same time we are communicating with QAS paramedics who are also responding to the call. We are all volunteers and self funded. We are unable to operate our vehicles without the fantastic support that we receive from the community, our special support groups and anonymous donations. Thank you to the First Responders for their time, dedication and personal commitment in looking after and caring for our community. Hans Schinkel 5472 3569

Some concerns have been raised regarding the school pick up zones at some of the schools in the Mary Valley with young children running near vehicles. If you have a young child who is attending school for the first time this year, please take the time to discuss road safety with your child. Drivers should also be aware of the unpredictability of young children and should always drive with care around schools during pick up and drop off times. Imbil Police will be attending schools in the Mary Valley to discuss road safety with the students. TOURISM AMBASSADORS CHECK US OUT
here was a sea of blue in the Mary Valley in April as 40 Ambassadors from Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centres came to familiarise themselves with the region. Julie Worth, president of Mary Valley Country, said “It was an amazing day – Sunshine Coast volunteers came as visitors and left as friends. They seemed amazed at the variety of accommodation product that Mary Valley has to offer. This ‘must do’ day has been a long time coming and the next step is to request that our Information Centre volunteers visit the Sunshine Coast to familiarise themselves with where Australia really does shine!”
Julie welcomed the Ambassadors at Honeybee Farm, Kandanga. A tour of the property followed and included viewing the new function and wedding facility – ‘Honeybee Gardens’. The Ambassadors travelling on two buses, courtesy of Karrabee Bus + Coach, were given a profile of the region by their tour guides. First stop, the Imbil Country Cabins followed by Mary Valley Views and Elsie of Imbil. They enjoyed a BBQ lunch which included fresh local produce salads at the Yabba Parklands in Imbil. During lunch, Ian Harling spoke about Ride on Mary kayak and bike hire. After lunch the Ambassadors were taken to Borumba Dam. Andrew Saunders, Manager of Destination Gympie Region, became tour guide for this sector of the trip. The romantic couples haven, Melawondi Spring Retreat was next, before continuing through Kandanga, an opportunity to learn about Kandanga Kitchen Farm Shop and Café opening in the coming months as well see the progress on the iconic Kandanga Hotel. At the final stop the visitors saw the event possibilities from development at Amamoor Lodge B&B. The journey finished with a drive through Amamoor and Dagun to see the stations where the Mary Valley Rattler will be bringing passengers on its return in December this year. The volunteers, based at the various Information Centres across the Sunshine Coast, were impressed with the quality of the accommodation and beauty of the Mary Valley. Bev Dooley from Visit Sunshine Coast said “The Ambassadors felt it was the best visit they have done – organised, smooth and very welcoming. We learnt so many things about the area, including just how close you are and how beautiful it is in your backyard.” Christine and Malcolm, Amamoor Lodge

MINOR COMMUNITY GRANTS NOW OPEN A LITTLE BIT GOES A LONG WAY –

oes your not-for-profit community group need help funding a project, event or activity? Perhaps you’re running a creative or community workshop, need to update your equipment or attend a seminar. Apply now for grants of up to $2000 through Sunshine Coast Council’s Minor Community Grants Programme. One recent beneficiary was Generation Innovation whose community development grant was put towards a project titled “GI In-a-Box” to help some of the Coast’s creative younger residents. “Generation Innovation was founded in 2014 on the Sunshine Coast with a vision to unleash the innovation of young people,” treasurer Ross Hepworth said. “The programme involves empowering young people to think creatively and positively and to pursue their business ideas by connecting to the real economy. “Running in 2015 and 2016, GI proved its value to young participants and to older community and business leaders who contributed to its activities through the GI Challenge and the Future Visioning exercise. “Following on from this success, there was a need to codify the methods, tools and processes of GI to help scale activities into the future. “Council’s community development grant enabled us to undertake the project ‘GI In-a-Box’ which codified some of the methods, tools and processes that we use in the GI Challenge. “GI In-a-Box will enable us to extend our reach into the community, empowering more young people and helping them to unleash their innovative genius.” See http://www.generationinnovation.com.au/sweet-spot Community Programmes Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay (top) said community groups could apply for a grant to assist with projects that benefit Sunshine Coast communities. “The fantastic work that Generation Innovation is doing for our young people is an outstanding example,” Cr McKay said. “The grants are a great way for all sorts of community groups to obtain funding to help with their smaller, but important projects. If you’re considering a grant for your community group, please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give our grant’s officers a call.” Community groups can apply for funding for one-off projects through one of seven categories: • Community Development • Community Facilities • Cultural Development • Cultural Heritage • Economic Development • Community Events • Sport, Recreation and Healthy Living Applications for minor grants will close at midnight on Monday, 8 May, 2017. The final round of 50th Anniversary Fund grants is also open to not-for-profit groups and organisations for projects, events and activities that support the fund and its legacy. Applications for Round 2 of Category A grants (up to $2000) in the 50th Anniversary Fund close on Friday, 19 May. Contact 5420 8616 or E grants@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants for eligibility criteria and application forms. If you need extra help, grants officers can arrange to meet with you in your local community. Need more funding? MARY VALLEY LIFESTYLE EXPO ROUNDUP
I
KANDANGA HALL 2 APRIL, 2017 THOSE WHO WERE THERE • Business Networking and Bootcamp with Carolyn • Jaye, White Tiger Martial Arts Academy • Hoofbeat ‘I Give A Buck Foundation’ and charity • Destiny Rescue charity – jewellery by rescued women • Liana, Emotional Mastery-4-Women • Sue, NuSkin-NuHealth • Kerry, Curves Gympie • Allee, Reptiles 2 U • Shane, Better Health Products • Shellie, Herbalife + Gympie Fit Club • Vanessa, Coin Accounting Kandanga • Kandanga School P&C • Dannyelle, DoTERRA Essential Oils and Natural Therapies • Michelle, Tupperware consultant • Simone, Magic Meals – GF, sugar free, spices, fudges • Julie Johnson, Barrier Reef Pools The weather was beautiful and the energy in the old hall was electric. There was definitely no indication of the area being whipped by Debbie only days before. Unfortunately, due to the power outages on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Cooroy areas (not to mention some of the Mary Valley), we weren’t as busy as we had expected, however residents and visitors to the Valley made a success of the day and they had way more fun! Mission accomplished! A huge thank you to the Mary Valley community and all the stallholders who attended on the day. Much joy was had, a few lucky prizes were won and a lot of smiles left the Kandanga Hall after the expo. We plan to do another in the second half of the year, so for anyone interested or for any contact numbers re those businesses listed above, just email me or call 0428 665 786. Carolyn Shearn, Expo convenor www.EndorFinPhotography.com
have lived in the Mary Valley in various locations for nearly 16 years and was the official photographer at the Kandanga School Centenary in 2015. From farm to house block; from the good old days (when you were able to leave houses unlocked); through the Traveston Dam trauma and now rekindling the community life. On speaking with Kathy Worth from the Kandanga Hall committee, we decided it was time for a big Mary Valley community event, for residents to get out and mingle, support the other small towns of the Valley by supporting local businesses and have some fun! As many as possible were given a chance to participate in one way or another, generating interest in the Mary Valley from outside, but also getting more eyes on our local (yet often unknown) businesses. So the Mary Valley Lifestyle Expo was born. WHO WAS INVITED? • Posters and 300+ flyers all up and down the Mary Valley, Gympie as well as to Cooran and Pomona. • Social media – community pages, networks and friends from Sunshine Coast to Noosa to Gympie and beyond, • Word of mouth – Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Noosa. • Ads in the school newsletters, Kandanga and Amamoor. 52 requests came back for stallholder applications to be sent out. (Some of which were actually other halls and markets curious about what was going on.) All up on the day there were 17 indoor stalls, however, three additional outdoor stalls had to be cancelled the week before for safety reasons, due to the aftermath of excyclone Debbie. Of those stalls, three were fundraising groups and charities from the Mary Valley and Gympie regions.
