O
n behalf of Kenilworth & District Chamber of Commerce & Citizens Inc and subcommittee Kenilworth Information Centre, we thank Sunshine Coast Council for their generosity in continuing to support the Chamber with funding from the Community Partnership Funding Programme, this funding assists with operational costs for the Information Centre. The continuing support from SCC enables the Centre to remain viable. Commission received from the Crafters, sales, office rental and donations cover the remaining overheads. To acknowledge SCC funding, a plaque has been placed on the external wall of the building. While funding from SCC assists with operational costs, we still apply for funding to update office equipment, we have been successful in obtaining funds from FRRR, and the donor supporting this project is Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation. The generosity of this Foundation is very much appreciated in helping rural areas such as Kenilworth – we thank them. We purchased several items to include storage, laptop and a new telephone. To acknowledge this funding from FRRR a plaque has been placed on the outside of the building.

COMMUNITY ________________________ KENILWORTH POLICE STATION
H
appy New Year and thank you for your support in 2016. December 2016 was a busy month in Kenilworth with huge number of camper and day visitors attending the area. I am happy to report everyone was well behaved and I had positive feedback from visitors saying how friendly and helpful local community are. I had a question from the public in relation to the Kenilworth Police Station closing. The answer to this is NO, there are no plans to close Kenilworth Police Station. You probably notice by now the speed limits on some of the Eumundi-Kenilworth Road has changed to 80km/h. The speed limit on the Obi Obi Road still remains at 100km/h. • School has started and school zone speed limit will be enforced. It is important to stick to the 40km/h speed limit between 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm Monday to Friday. I would like to thank the other emergency services in Kenilworth for their tireless efforts over the last 12 months, it has been appreciated. Happy Australia Day, I hope everyone enjoyed the day and celebrated everything great about our country. Reminder, you can report all crimes on 131 444 or call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000. The main aim of this programme is to give people a better understanding of the techniques used in this potentially life-saving skill. Hans Schinkel 5472 3569
KENILWORTH CHEESE, WINE & FOOD FEST
t’s wine and cheese time in Kenilworth on Easter Saturday 15 April 2017. The Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest planning is well underway – • Camel rides • Cheester Egg Hunt • Easter Hat parade • Animal nursery • Cheese rolling • Live music with Rubatuba, all the fun things with lots and lots of produce and food stalls. The Food Fest showcases local produce and producers. Now is the time to book your spot. Stall sites are getting scarce and many stalls have already booked. Check the web page for stall booking details. www.kenilworthfoodfest.org.au This annual food day hugely benefits the Kenilworth and district community by bringing many visitors into our backyard. Some stay for the weekend and sometimes longer. As well, the Food Fest donates to Kenilworth First Responders, Kenilworth Rural Fire Brigade and their local SES. The Food Fest Committee asks for your help on the day as the setting up and taking down / clean up, is a big task. We start 6am on that Saturday and finish approximately 4pm on the same day. Help would really be appreciated and you are giving to your community at the same time. If you can help, please contact Graeme on 5472 3156 – helpers get a free lunch and drinks, coffee, ice cream. QUEENSLAND WOMEN’S WEEK COMES TO GHEERULLA
n 2016 Queensland expanded international Women’s Day celebrations into a week long, series of events and activities called Queensland Women’s Week (QWW). The theme for QWW 2017 is Queensland Women: Be Involved. Lead the Way, and aims to inspire Queensland women and girls to participate in, and pursue, leadership positions in their community and workplace, and raise community awareness of the benefits of having women in decision-making positions. Queensland women can join with millions of others throughout the world to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. As part of QWW, there will be a free seminar at Gheerulla Hall with invited speakers Elaine Bradley and Leanne Wood. Elaine is well known to Mary Valley locals, and has an extensive background in community development particularly in relation to quality food production. Leanne is a ‘tree-changer’ from Kenilworth and student at Griffith University, researching the role of women as major contributors to the wellbeing of the Mary Valley community. All women are welcome to attend. When: Tuesday 7 March 10:00am, Gheerulla Hall (corner Moy Pocket Road and KenilworthEumundi Road), followed by free refreshments. Please RSVP (call or text) to 0458 047 272 for catering purposes. Gheerulla Hall and Recreation Grounds Assoc. Committee

EULOGY MARIE THERESE McIVOR 08.12.1925 – 30.01.2017 arie Therese Passlow was born on 8 December 1925 at Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. Marie’s parents were Stanley Passlow and Mary Walsh. Marie was the second child and oldest girl in the family of seven children. Her siblings were Jack, Kath, Allan, Bobby, Rae and Win. Marie’s brother Allan is now her only surviving sibling. When Marie was very young the family moved from Bellingen, NSW, to Queensland and purchased a dairy farm at Booloumba, near Kenilworth. Marie and her siblings travelled to the one teacher school by horseback. In 1939 Marie went to board at St Ann’s, part of All Hallows’ Convent on Brisbane for a year and a half to learn dressmaking. Marie returned home to the farm at the end of 1940 before most of the family moved temporarily to Gunnedah in New South Wales because of uncertainty during the war. On returning to Kenilworth around 1943 Marie used her skills to make clothes for the family and later started to travel from farm to farm, riding her bicycle with a suitcase on the back, and making clothes for farming and town families. Marie met the love of her life, Simon, at Kenilworth and they were married and moved to Brisbane in 1951, leasing the grocery shop in Ashgrove which they subsequently purchased. Marie and Simon worked together in the shop for sixteen years before Simon became ill and passed way in 1967. Marie stayed on running the shop for a further twenty years with the help of Bill Urquhart, Simon’s cousin. To this day Marie is still affectionately called Mrs Mac by former customers and neighbours. When Bill passed away in 1987 Marie decided it was time to retire. She then volunteered for nearly 20 years at the Blue Care Day Respite Centre at Ashgrove before becoming a client. Marie has one son, Rod, and a daughter-in-law, Ros. Coming from a large extended family Marie had many cousins and many nieces and nephews and was an aunt, great aunt and great, great aunt. Marie attended the Ashgrove Ave Uniting Church until it closed in 2010. She was a member of the Ashgrove Senior Citizen’s Club, Brisbane Legacy, Brisbane Women’s Club, the Ashgrove Historical Society and Indoor Bowls at St Michael’s Church at Dorrington. In 2015 Australia celebrated the centenary of ANZAC. As Marie was one of the few surviving widows whose husbands had seen service in World War 1, she was interviewed by The Sydney Morning Herald, the local community newspaper and, at the age of 89, ended up as a cover girl on the Legacy Torch magazine for Autumn 2015. Marie was a resident at Maranatha Aged Care at Kallangur for three months before she passed away on 30 January 2017, aged 91 years. She was practical, reserved, had a gentle spirit, a quiet faith and an inner strength – A beautiful lady and a life well lived. Rod MacIver

COMMUNITY ________________________ BREASTSCREEN QUEENSLAND IS BACK IN KENILWORTH THIS FEBRUARY
O
nce again the BreastScreen Queensland mobile van will be setting up behind the Hall at the Kenilworth Showgrounds, Elizabeth Street on 27 and 28 February 2017. BreastScreen Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said regular two yearly breast cancer screening was still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything. Women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to attend. Ms Hart said even with a great amount of publicity about breast cancer, there were still a lot of women who had not made having a breastscreen a regular part of their health regime. “Many women believe that they are not at risk of developing breast cancer because none of their relatives have been diagnosed with it”, said Ms Hart. “However nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease at all.” While some women in the Kenilworth area will have received a letter from BreastScreen Queensland inviting them to make an appointment at the mobile service while it is Kenilworth, it is not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can participate in this free screening programme. “Women aged 40 years and older who haven’t received a letter from BreastScreen but who would like to make an appointment with our service can just call 13 20 50 or they can book online at www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au “There are no referrals required. There is no need for women to put off having a breast screen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient and free!” To make an appointment call 13 20 50 or visit www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au

SES KENILWORTH UPDATE
opefully you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year period. Kenilworth SES had a busy Christmas period assisting Imbil with the severe storm that went over them and did damage to the town. Then on the 3 to 4 December weekend, Kenilworth SES members where activated again for a severe storm in Kenilworth. Members not only from Kenilworth but also Maroochydore, Cooroy, Nambour and Caloundra spent the weekend assisting the community where required. They not only assisted the town with storms, members were deployed to assist Queensland Ambulance Service in retrieving a patient from the Conondale Great Walk. I would like to thank all members of the Kenilworth SES in their assistance during this time. SES reminds all residents that if you require SES assistance call 13 25 00 and please be patient, all cases are prioritised to severity and what recourses are required and volunteers are then deployed to the highest priority first. Kenilworth SES are always looking for both operational and non-operational members to assist in providing assistance in the local community. The only requirement is that you be older than 16 years of age and willingness to learn, all uniforms and training is provided. This is a great way to learn new skills. If this sounds like you Kenilworth SES trains every second Tuesday at the SES shed in Margaret Street. Next training night Tuesday, 21 February 2017 at 6:45pm. If you would like any further information please give Chris Childs, Officer in Charge a call on 0423 510 772 or email – sesken@bigpond.com
TED O’BRIEN MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX – M’DORE ELECTORATE OFFICE 07 5479 2800 t’s been an energetic start to the year with my Summer Road Trip to parts of the Fairfax electorate talking to residents about their concerns. Many people gathered in local parks to meet me – despite the amazing heat – and discuss things that are important to them. We had some decent robust debates as well and it’s always a pleasure to see democracy in progress. I am committed to following through with the matters raised and urge anyone in the Mary Valley region to please come forward and seek assistance or advice if needed. An issue bubbling away in the media over past weeks has been the allocation of medical training places to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). It’s unfortunate certain local and State politicians have falsely raised fears that the Medical School won’t go ahead unless the Federal Government makes a decision by 15 February about extra medical student places. I would like to assure Sunshine Coast residents that the hospital’s new Medical School – which is due to open in 2019 – is not in jeopardy. I am absolutely confident we will have an answer from the Federal Government in April – as I have indicated all along. April meets the necessary deadlines and is when a vital review into medical training places across the country will be complete. My federal colleague Andrew Wallace and I secured that National Review and it is the right process to follow. The extra 15 medical places we need on the Coast must come from somewhere else and the review will determine from where they can be redirected. “It is a progressive time for health and education on the Sunshine Coast and I am working hard behind the scenes to makes things happen.”

COMMUNITY ________________________ CR GREG ROGERSON – DIV 10 – SUNSHINE COAST Phone (07) 5441 8368 – Mobile 0419 712 546 ramfest – 2017 The Year of the Tram! For those in and around the Mary Valley who have availed themselves to a great afternoon/evening of good live music and exceptional food at present and past Tramfest events, please listen up! Tramfest, the event which was instigated to help raise foundational funds towards the community’s commitment of $600k toward Nambour’s Heritage Tram Project, has evolved into a much loved and anticipated experience for the residents of Nambour, the Hinterland and surrounds, and we are keen to keep the event fresh and alive. Tramfest Street Parties are changing in 2017 from being a monthly event to being held quarterly – March, July, September and December. The Tramfest Organising Committee have decided to make this change for a number of reasons – firstly it will give more flexibility and allow us to stage the event on the following Saturday in the event of rain or inclement weather, or in the event of a clashing with another major music/food event. Next Tramfest – Saturday March 18! To find out more about Tramfest, check out our Facebook page at www.faceboook.com/tramfestnambour Designer Dunny – brief update Council has invited six architectural offices to provide a quotation to develop and document the design for construction, based on the winning concept design, Canistrum, designed by Maleny local, Michael Lennie. The quotation period closes Thursday 16 February, 2017, and once the quotations have been assessed, Council will award the project to the successful architectural design consultancy in late February/early March… we are one step closer to delivering the project! Kenilworth GP – update Hot off the press! I have been given advice that the Federal Department assessing the Expressions of Interest re: Grant Funding for the extension to the Kenilworth Information Centre to house a much needed Medical Centre, have started processing the EOI’s, however due to the extreme large number of submissions it is taking longer than anticipated. Obviously the Christmas break and sudden change of the Federal Health Minister has contributed significantly to this delay. Fingers crossed! Environment Levy Landholder Grants Landholder Environment Grants provide funding for projects that protect and enhance the environment. The 2017 grants are now open and only private rural landholders can apply. The project must occur on privately owned rural land within the Sunshine Coast Local Government area. Priority is given to projects with high ecological values and that have good landowner contribution. • Applicants should read the Landholder Environment Grant Guidelines on Council’s homepage prior to completing an EOI form. Applicants must submit an EOI form during the expression of interest period (closes 20 February) to be eligible to apply. Recreation activities are no dam problem Well, the results of SEQ Water’s recreation review modelling on water quality are in and surprise, surprise their unrealistic assumptions about potential impacts of people using Wappa and Cooloolabin dams for recreation activities have been sunk! Initial findings from Dr Peter Coombes, who council funded to carry out a peer review on recreation impacts on water quality in Wappa and Cooloolabin Dams at the request of the Mapleton and Yandina Community Associations (MADCA and YADCA), found that human activities on dams and lakes were unlikely to significantly impact water quality at water treatment plants because the natural processes in dams and lakes manage any recreational impacts distant from inlets to water treatment plants. These findings have been found to be true by SEQ Water themselves, who initially proposed that just one person entering a dam with a ‘dirty backside’ would contaminate the water supply. I will now look to liaise with the new SEQ Water interim CEO Jim Pruss to see where we now sit when it comes to allowing canoeing and tournament water skiing activities on these dams. Rounding off for now, Rogo

For more information about the Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board visit Sunshine Coast Council’s website.
Horizon Sunshine Coast is presented by Sunshine Coast Council and supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
ho are our arts and cultural practitioners, where do they live on the Coast and what are they doing ? – these are the questions Sunshine Coast Council needs your help to answer by filling out the Cultural Mapping Survey. Whether you are an arts and cultural development worker, dancer, festival director, jeweller, visual artist, curator, musician, performer, writer, or anything new and in between, council wants to hear from you. In keeping with council’s vision for a healthy, smart, and creative region, the Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board, together with council, is developing a 20 year Regional Arts and Cultural Plan for the region. Arts Advisory Board Chair Collette Brennan said their aim was to create an inspired vision of arts and culture on the Sunshine Coast:- “The data we have, together with the research we are currently doing, including this survey, will feed into the development of a contemporary, sophisticated and comprehensive strategy that will provide the framework necessary to support and nurture an environment in which arts and culture on the Sunshine Coast can flourish.” Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski encouraged all artists and creative practitioners across the region to complete the short survey. “We are in a period of very dynamic opportunity and the Cultural Mapping Survey will help us to identify the current arts and cultural practices represented on the Coast and where they are located,” he said. “If you’re a coast creative, please dive in and help us complete this vital piece of mapping. It will really help us to identify opportunities and assist with planning for the future of arts and culture on the coast. Your input now will have a lasting impact on arts and culture in our region well in to the future.” To complete the survey visit Cultural Mapping Survey. The survey will close 10 March, 2017.

COMMUNITY ________________________ SCHOOLS ENCOURAGED TO GET INVOLVED IN 2017 ‘KIDS IN ACTION’ PROGRAMME
S
unshine Coast students will be encouraged to use their hands-on environmental science skills by testing water quality of local creeks and exploring the biodiversity of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve as part of this year’s Kids in Action programme. Designed for students from Years 5-8, Kids in Action aims to increase children’s environmental knowledge and understanding, while providing opportunities for positive environmental and sustainability action. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay (pictured below) said the programme had continued to grow from strength to strength since its inception seven years ago. “What makes Kids in Action so successful is the kids teaching kids approach to teaching that underpins it,” Cr McKay said. “This approach partners schools with local environmental experts and engages students actively in learning about local environmental issues. “It also encourages students to participate in solving these problems and assists them in sharing their knowledge with the community.” Last year 350 students from 25 schools across the Coast shared their diverse and exciting ideas for how to live more sustainably, teaching each other about everything from using vegetables to make eco-dye, to creating green walls from recycled drink bottles and how to develop scientific fieldwork skills to explore and record mangrove habitat health. Building on the success of last year’s programme, Kids in Action 2017 is set to be bigger and better than ever, with up to 30 schools exploring the theme ‘Relationships matter’. Schools will be introduced to mentors, begin planning their presentation and engage in hands-on fieldwork during the Environmental Projects Day on Friday, 5 May, 2017. Students will then take part in an environmental ‘show and tell’, demonstrating and sharing their projects with other schools at the Kids in Action Conference on Friday, 1 September 2017. The conference encourages students to take responsibility for their learning through the planning and delivery of environmental projects. Kids in Action is a great opportunity for students to develop leadership and active citizenship skills, and connect with local environmental groups and mentors, creating genuine learning exchanges between current and future environmental custodians. To register your interest in your school taking part, visit Sunshine Coast Council’s website or follow on Facebook.

IMBIL POLICE BRIEF JANUARY 2017
e hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and are having a great 2017. Police officers from the Imbil Police station, Hervey Bay Water Police and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol conducted some joint patrols of the Borumba Dam over the Christmas period. A number of fines were issued for fishing without a stocked impoundment permit, and boat licencing offences. The patrols likely be repeated during the year. • There is handy IPhone application “The Queensland Recreational Fishing Guide”. The application lists bag limits on a wide range of fish species and other fishing rules. A reminder that Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required when fishing at Borumba Dam. The cost of the permit is $50 a year, or $36 a year if eligible for a concession. For more information about costs and where to purchase a permit, have a look at Queensland Government website: https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/boatingfishing/rec-fishing/dams/ There have been reports of two burglary related offences over the last month with one in Imbil and one in Amamoor. One of the offences involved vehicles being stolen from the address. Most modern cars require the key to start the vehicle. There is no way to “hot wire” most modern vehicles and a number of break and enters into houses are simply to locate the keys for vehicles. A lot of people hang their car keys up on a hook in the kitchen or other easily viewable position from outside the address. This can be quite a temptation for car thieves. It is suggested that car keys be stored in a location that cannot be easily seen and out of the way. This will reduce the chances of your car being stolen in the event of a burglary. We dealt with a slippery customer over the Christmas period with a carpet snake being seized. Police from Imbil Police were called to attend an Imbil address where cannabis plants, drug utensils and the python were located. The animal was collected by Parks Wildlife staff for assessment and is due to be released back into the wild. Keeping or removing wildlife without a permit is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act. A 36 year old male is due to appear at the Gympie Magistrates Court on 30 January 2017 regarding producing drugs, possession of drug utensils and unlawfully keeping an animal. Traffic related offences for the Mary Valley include two drink driving related offences and a number of traffic infringements issued for speeding, driving unregistered vehicle, and learner driver vehicle unaccompanied. A 19 year old male was issued a traffic infringement on 19 December 2016 for travelling at 147km/h in a 110 zone at the Bruce Highway Coles Creek resulting in a $568 fine. Crashes at these speeds are likely to result in serious injury or death not only to themselves but possibly to other road users. Stay on the speed limit and make sure you get to your destination safely. Stay safe, Sergeant Brock MURPHY and Senior Constable Bill GREER Imbil Police Station The Imbil Police Station counter is open: Monday – 9am to 2pm Tuesday – 8am to 12pm Wednesday –12pm to 4pm Thursday – 9am to 2pm

GYMPIE REGION CONFIRMS ITS PLACE AS GLOBAL TOURISM DESINATION
T
he Gympie Region and in particular Rainbow Beach this week continues its time in the limelight in Europe as it is promoted in the same breath as Cairns and the Whitsunday’s in ‘Tourism and Events Queensland’s Queensland on Tour’ in Europe this month. While the temperature was soaring over 30C back home, the thermometer was plummeting below zero in Germany, making the billboards featuring Rainbow Beach an even more attractive proposition for snowed in Germans. In partnership with TEQ, Cathay Pacific and Explorer Fernreisen, a German travel agency, the billboards are promoting the Australia’s Nature Coast. Australia’s Nature Coast is a joint marketing partnership between Visit Sunshine Coast (which includes the Gympie Region and Noosa) and Visit Fraser Coast, and their representatives were visiting Germany as part of Queensland on Tour Europe 2017 trade mission organised by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ). Mayor Mick Curran said, “We are so proud of our region and its position in the Australian Tourism market. This campaign highlights Rainbow Beach and the Gympie Region as a world class destination and puts us on the map. “Tourism attraction and development continues to be a major focus for our Council in 2017 and we remain committed to our partnerships with the Visit Sunshine Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland.” In addition, a NZ campaign in a partnership between TEQ and Air NZ is also about to hit the streets featuring Rainbow Beach as the hero image. An advertising campaign including billboards, buses, bus shelter signage and significant digital banners is soon to be launched across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Napier, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Queenstown, Dunedin, Nelson and Invercargill. New Zealand is currently the Sunshine Coast’s biggest international market. Above – One of the Gympie Region billboards currently being used in two international campaigns and TEQ believe these campaigns will put bums on seats.

e would like to invite you to attend our first community led planning workshop on Sunday, 26 February, at the Maleny Neighborhood Centre. This workshop will be the first in a series of six workshops which will be held during 2017. It will be facilitated by Prof. Darryl Low Choy. The specific objectives of the first workshop are: 1. to confirm arrangement for the ongoing process of developing a Community Plan for Invasive Animal Management; 2. to undertake a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunity, threats) analysis in relation to community led action for invasive animal management; 3. to complete a preliminary community network analysis; and 4. to derive a preliminary ‘vision’ for community led action for the management of invasive animals. Whether or not you are able to attend, we would like to encourage you to invite others to come along to the workshop. Please visit our webpage or see – www.facebook.com/periurbancommunityledplanning/
FOUR MONTH ‘INVASIVE PLANTS’ MONITORING
A
four-month inspection programme to monitor the presence and extent of invasive plants in selected locations across the region is about to be undertaken by Sunshine Coast Council. From February 2017, the programme will target specific pest plants listed in the Biosecurity Act 2014 including Groundsel bush, Rat’s Tail grasses, Parthenium and Salvinia. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the programme was vitally important in our efforts to manage invasive plant species. “Not only do they replace more productive grasses, they also invade and compete with pastures for water and nutrients, destroy native wildlife habitat and impact upon livestock that eat the plants, all of which can have a huge economic impact on our farmers. “From February 13, council officers will conduct inspections of privately owned land on properties with land size equal to or greater than 4000m2 within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area,” Cr McKay said. “Officers will inspect properties to confirm the presence or absence of invasive plants, monitor the effectiveness of control measures being undertaken, collect samples and provide information and education to help property owners with controlling these invasive weeds. “Council also offers free weed control equipment for loan to property owners. “Results from past survey programmes showed that 15% of properties inspected contained declared pest plants. “While this may not seem like a large number, it is vital that these plants do not spread and the pest survey programme is designed to ensure council and land owners can monitor and manage the presence of these plants in order to protect our environment.” • All residents have a General Biosecurity Obligation under the Biosecurity Act 2014 to manage invasive plants on land that is under their control. The programme will conclude on June 30 and will be conducted in the localities of Beerwah, Booroobin, Conondale, Diamond Valley, Doonan, Dulong, Glenview, Harper Creek, Hunchy, Kiels Mountain, Landsborough, Meridan Plains, Mooloolah Valley, Palmview, Peachester, Perwillowen, West Woombye, Weyba Downs and Wootha. Properties previously known to contain invasive plants will also be surveyed for ongoing compliance. For more information and advice on weed identification, control and hire equipment visit SC Council’s website. 15 February 2017
