WE SAY GOODBYE TO A GREAT MAN

Last month saw the passing of Hermann Schwabe, dedicated ex-councillor for the Kenilworth region.

In 1982, Hermann was elected as councillor for Division 1 in the former Maroochy Shire Council. He won by only six votes. For the next six terms, until he retired in 2004, he won by a comfortable majority, once even unopposed. This support of his constituents for over two decades is a clear testimony to his character, determination, vision and integrity.

Hermann left his mark on the Sunshine Coast. From tightening development regulations and shaping the regions’ town plan to improving water quality and environmental protection, Hermann’s relentless pursuit of a better way still benefits the Sunshine Coast and its residents.

After retiring from Maroochy Shire in 2004, Hermann moved to Maleny, where he lived for most of the last two decades of his life. He passed on the 7th of August 2024 at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. He had battled increasingly with dementia for a number of years, after a stroke in 2021. He will be remembered for his vision, strength, dedication, passion and so much more.

A public memorial will be held for Hermann at the Kenilworth Hall on October 19 at 1pm. If you would like to be involved, share memories or just keep informed, please contact Cornelia, at rememberinghermann@gmail.

Kenilworth, his home town for nearly thirty years, saw first hand the rewards of Hermann’s dedication. He transformed the Kenilworth playground from a relatively bare park to a state of the art playground that was the envy of the rest of the Sunshine Coast and further afield. He significantly contributed to the community pool, and was integral in creating the Kenilworth library.

"My father was a man who was committed to the people and his vision. He was not afraid of standing alone for what he believed in," says daughter, Cornelia. "He had strong views on many things, and doggedly pursued improvement. Even after retirement, he continued to be interested in local government, and remained highly involved in the community.”

COMMUNITY NEWS UPDATES

CHEERIO FROM THE CHURCHES

Here's a special Hello & Welcome to all our visitors to lovely Kenilworth & District.

Our local churches offer you a warm welcome to our services and to morning tea afterwards. You might like to participate in some of our activities.

St Luke's Anglican services are on Sunday mornings at 9am and a short Morning Prayer on Thursday mornings at 9am. This service is followed by Meditation at 9:30am at St John Bosco's with a social gathering afterwards at the local coffee shop. If you've never tried meditation before, this group will gently guide you.

Each year, St Luke's makes up 120 or so Christmas Hampers to be distributed to elderly folk being cared for by Anglicare in Nambour and at Erowal, Maleny. We seek donations of small personal care items such as small tissue packs, soap, hand cream, toiletries etc. Any small items would be gratefully accepted and can be left at St Luke's Church. St Luke's also makes knitted or crochet rugs for Anglicare, with some wool supplied. Maybe knitters might be interested in joining the Knitters & Natters group run by Kenilworth Arts Council each Tuesday at 10am.

The World Day of Prayer for Creation was celebrated at St George's Anglican Church in Maleny on 1 Sept with an Evensong for Creation led by Rev'd Deb Bird with the sermon and prayers by Archbishop Jeremy Greaves. Also taking part also were members of the Catholic, Uniting and Lutheran Churches and Barung Landcare.

St Luke's Dates for You Diary:

Sunday 29 September 9:30am - Ecumenical Service at St Luke's. ( No separate Anglican or Catholic services that day.)

Sunday 6 October 9am - The Blessing of the Animals - Outdoor HC service - Feast of St Francis

Sunday 27 October 9am - St Luke's Feast Day HC - Rev'd Kaye Pitman

There is a farewell on Sunday 13 October at 9:30am at St George's, Maleny, for Rev'd Deb Bird who is taking up the position of rector in the Kenmore-Brookfield Parish. A shared lunch will follow the service.

As St John Bosco's parish priest, Fr Odinaka , will be away on 15 Sept for the monthly Mass, we will gather each Sunday for Liturgy of the Word with Communion at 9am. St John Bosco Church will be open every Saturday from 10am -4pm for visitors and locals alike to spend time in quiet reflection away from the busyness of daily life, in a beautiful church space steeped in a history of community worship for over eighty years.

Community Wild Dog Baiting Program Spring 2024

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community-based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Wild dogs cost Australia’s agricultural sector $89 million per year. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna including koalas. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control restricted species on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Obi Obi, Peachester, Reesville and Witta areas from 7 September - 15 October, 2024.

ENVIRONMENT & COMMUNITY

AN INSIDIOUS CREEPER

Cat’s claw creeper vine (Macfadyena unguis-cati) can completely smother whole forests and change soil chemistry, making it one of our worst weeds in Australia. This woody vine has claw-like tendrils it uses to climb up trees, large yellow flowers seen in summer along some stretches of the Mary River, and long seed pods with papery seeds that spread easily on the wind. Cat’s claw creeper was introduced originally as a garden ornamental and is now found across the Sunshine Coast. It is a restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014, which means that if you have cat’s claw creeper on your property you need to manage its impacts and prevent its spread. Scan the QR code or visit Council’s website for information and help on managing this aggressive weed. Managing invasive plants at your place benefits our whole region. Commit. Collaborate. Celebrate.

COMMUNITY SKILLING UP TO BE PREPARED IN THE HINTERLAND

Plan C has started delivering its Community Carers and Responders (CCR) training to Pomona, Gympie and Maryborough. The three day training program is being delivered in each of the three locations.

The CCR program trains community volunteers in important topics like self-care, how to handle disasters, how to build stronger communities, and emergency communications. As a result, participants know how to prepare their house for future disruptions, how to become more food and water resilient, how to plan for power outages, and more. In this comprehensive program, attendees also receive first aid and psychological first aid training for free. Upon graduation, participants are mentored to implement a project that builds their own community’s resilience. It’s pretty comprehensive really!

The program commences in Pomona

on Friday 6 September, followed by Saturday 5 October and concludes Saturday 12 October. Participants are also offered a full day of both First Aid and Psychological First Aid as part of the program. You too can join in, by applying here (but note that places are limited so apply soon!): https://www.planc.org.au/ccr-apply

‘Our Plan is the Community’ is the motto of not-for-profit organisation Plan C, whose mission is to build the resilience and regenerative capacities of Australian communities. As part of this mission they created the Community Carers & Responders (CCR) program in response to weather events and the impact on the community in 2022. CCR is a network of community members trained and nurtured to build community resilience.

The funding for this activity is provided by Country to Coast, QLD, with the support from the Australian Government through the PHN Program.

CR WINSTON JOHNSTON DIVISION 5 - SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL

Parks and Gardens: The warmer weather has arrived significantly earlier this year. Our parks and gardens are already seeing increased grass growth as a result. In response, Council is transitioning to its spring mowing schedule earlier. The Parks and Gardens team have lined up additional support officers to make sure mowing and maintenance work is undertaken safely, timely, and with quality standards met.

Parks and Gardens manage more than 1,450 hectares of open spaces which includes 3,512 mowing sites - or to put that in perspective - 933 NRL fields. It’s a truly amazing effort and logistical feat! Make sure you give the team a friendly wave next time you see them out cutting the grass.

Maleny Makeover: The Maleny Streetscape project aims to enhance Maleny’s ‘sense of place’, as well as beautify and improve the functionality of the town’s main street. With construction starting early 2025, make sure you stay up to date with the project. Subscribe on Council’s website or email the team at maplestreetscapemaleny@sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au.

Funding boost for our community groups: I'm pleased to see Council has approved almost $1.2 million in Community Partnership Funding to help 144 not-for-profit groups across our region continue to thrive. We have many local organisations in Division 10 that will benefit from this funding to continue helping our community. Kenilworth Arts Council, Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce and Kenilworth Hall Show and Recreation Ground Association will each receive a funding boost. Other organisations set to benefit from funding include Belli Community Hall, Cooloolabin Hall Association and the Gheerulla Hall and Recreation Association. Visit Council's website for a full list of program funding recipients.

New picnic table for Kenilworth lookout: I'm glad to see we've finished installing a new picnic table setting at Hugh Cochrane Lookout in Kenilworth. It's certainly heading into prime picnic weather and I hope our community enjoys this spot.

Investigating safety improvements for Cedar Creek Road: In recent times I have had phone calls with local Gheerulla residents sharing concerns about Cedar Creek Road. I have also driven along and inspected the road for myself. I am pleased that with your local support Council is investigating safety improvements on the gravel section of the Southern end of Cedar Creek Road. If you have any feedback to provide at this very early stage, I encourage you to provide your local knowledge to the design team via email to DesignServices@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

TED O'BRIEN - FEDERAL MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX

Winter Road Trip: As part of my Winter Road Trip, I spent a morning holding my mobile office in Kenilworth on 8th August. I enjoyed my time with locals discussing issues important to them – it’s great to do this in person for people unable to make it into the office which is in Maroochydore - right at the other end of the Fairfax electorate. The common themes I heard were the difficulty in making ends meet and families finding it hard to rent properties due to price rises. If you would like to discuss any local or federal issues, please feel free to contact my office on 5479 2800, email ted.obrien.mp@aph.gov. au or subscribe to my weekly newsletter at https://tedobrien.com.au/

100 Years of Kenilworth State Community College: I dropped in to Kenilworth State College this week to deliver a flag and was mightily impressed by the dedication of its leadership to caring for the students. The school’s 2023 survey results show that 100% of parents feel that their children’s needs are being met and that teachers at the school motivate their children to learn – amazing metrics which the school should be proud of.

Kenilworth State Community College will celebrate its Centenary on the 19th of October - a momentous achievement!

Museum Mystery Madness: Museum Mystery Madness is back, offering a great family day out as you crack codes and solve clues at eight local museums throughout September. Each museum has its own intriguing collection and its own individual mystery quiz. You can take part in one or visit them all. To win, simply pop your quiz into the box at the museum by September 30.

Kenilworth Museum: Find the Scrabble board clues hidden in the museum. Open Sundays, 10am to 2pm, entry adults $4, children $1

Kenilworth Community-led

Seeking volunteers

Kenilworth Community-led Safe Space needs you!

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for volunteers for our Kenilworth Community-led Safe Space, a non-clinical drop in style space that welcomes people experiencing emotional distress, suicidal thoughts or crisis, and their support network.

Do you have lived experience of suicidal thoughts or crisis or have you supported a loved one who has?

We would love to hear from you!

SAFE SPACE IN KENILWORTH

Did you know that a local team of social workers and volunteers has partnered with Roses in the Ocean to create a 'safe space' in Kenilworth?

Roses in the Ocean was born when a young Australian chose to end his life on August 31st 2008. A young man of 43, ex RAAF Fighter Pilot Combat Instructor and International Commercial Pilot, highly respected and loved by so many – gone.

Mark was one of the reported 2191 people in Australia who took their own lives in 2008, and is the brother of ‘Roses in the Ocean’ Founder, Bronwen Edwards.

Bronwen and her family gathered on Mark’s favourite beach at his home in Coolum Beach, Australia, and placed roses in the ocean a couple weeks after his funeral. The day provided an opportunity for Bronwen and her husband to speak to their young children about why their Uncle had died. For Mark’s family, it was important the children understood that just because you were struggling and sad, did not mean you would die.

We have to make it “okay” to reach out to others and seek help when “life” seems too difficult.

Roses in the Ocean was established because at the time, the word suicide was barely spoken, finding helpful help was near impossible and it was obvious that the people who knew what it was like to experience suicidal thoughts, make an attempt on their life, desperately try to help someone they love stay alive and those who were navigating loss through suicide, had no voice. They were not the people designing or delivering services, they were not the people who were advising governments on suicide prevention reform . . . and they needed to be. So the family set out to change that.

Since 2011, Roses in the Ocean has evolved from hosting community events into the national lived experience of suicide organisation in Australia, recognised internationally for developing best practice in lived experience capacity building, integration and partnership. As the only 100% lived experience of suicide organisation of its kind, they have a significant role in collaboratively working with government and the suicide prevention sector to drive system reform and are at the centre of the establishment of a much broader suicide prevention system that reaches far beyond the health system alone.
