CALLING ALL AGES, SKILLS & BACKGROUNDS!

re you a Mary Valley resident who would like to learn new skills, meet some great people and help your local community? Well the crew at Kenilworth Rural Fire Brigade would love to hear from you! Queensland’s Rural Fire Service (RFS) has a diverse range of roles available to individuals wishing to volunteer their time. • While firefighting can be a hazardous and physical activity, there are many other support roles open to a variety of people of all ages, skills and backgrounds. Being part of the RFS offers fantastic opportunities for self development. Members of rural brigades receive training and skills that assist in all areas of life. • Brigade members learn teamwork, incident management, leadership skills, fire behaviour, communications and much more. As a volunteer you can choose to undertake training specific to your role or you can continue to develop additional skills through training the RFS offers. Rural Fire Brigade members also deliver a range of community education programmes within their communities. • The local knowledge held by brigade members and their understanding of fire behaviour and prevention ensure the community gets information and education specific to their circumstances. RFS volunteers are often sent on deployment to assist other states during fire disasters. Members are also called upon to help other emergency service agencies during disasters such as floods and storms. • The RFS is part of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and includes about 36,000 unpaid volunteers serving in about 1,500 brigades across the state. • These men and women provide dedicated fire services to 93 per cent of Queensland. Without our volunteers we would not be able to provide a service to rural and remote Queensland. Please contact First Officer Neil Reinhardt on 0487 999 444 for more information on joining the Kenilworth Rural Fire Brigade.

NEW HAPPENINGS AT GHEERULLA HALL

pring at Gheerulla Hall always inspires us to get motivated, so we have some new events to stimulate the brain, get the creative juices flowing, and inspire the heart. As well as keep the body and the brain powering forward. Firstly, some Computer Help sessions – starting on the third Friday of November, 10am at the Hall. *Are you having problems with your computer? When you phone for help, can you describe the problem? Does the person helping you understand what you mean? Do you understand their suggestions? We may be able to help. Optional gold coin donation to the Hall. And once we’ve brought you into the technological 21st Century, you can stay and be inspired, with a collection of TED talks and videos to help you dispel the notion that all in the world is doom and gloom. Worried about robots, wars, unemployment, new diseases? This is the most peaceful time in history, we are living longer and healthier, are smarter and more tolerant, we have more knowledge than ever, and we are more creative. • We have had to bid farewell to our lovely yoga teacher, Claire, as she heads to India to continue her yoga journey. Namaste, Claire, and thanks for bringing yoga to our community. All the best for the future, and we know we’ll see you again. We welcome Alison, from Abundant Yoga, to begin yoga classes at the Hall on Saturday mornings from 9am – 10.30am. • For the body and mind, Line Dancing continues on Wednesdays at 9am, and Fitness Classes with Jo (supported by Sunshine Coast Council) at 9am Thursdays. Trim, taut, terrific, thoughtful and technological! *Please note there are also Computer Help sessions at Kenilworth Library on the first Friday of the month.

DATE ALERT! KENILWORTH CHEESE WINE AND FOOD FEST 2019

he date of the Kenilworth Cheese Wine and Food Fest will be changed in 2019. With 2018 marking the 10th anniversary of the festival, most of the committee members who have worked so hard over the years to establish the Fest as an essential Easter Saturday date in the Sunshine Coast Events Calendar decided it was time to hand over the reins. The challenge to continue this event has been taken up by a new committee, with hopefully some more volunteers adding their names as word gets around. Because of the short lead-in time to Easter for the new committee, and with the support of local sponsors and businesses, the date for the festival has been changed for 2019. An application to hold the festival on Saturday, 29 June 2019 has been made to the Sunshine Coast Council, and hopefully the first Saturday of the June school holidays will become the established date for the festival into the future. • Stall holders, sponsors, volunteers and visitors are asked to take note of the new proposed date (stall holders should have received an email relating to the change), and keep an eye out for more information as the new website becomes available and the new committee gets operations under way.

WHEN PIECES OF HISTORY COME TOGETHER

sn’t it nice when snippets of history come together? The newspaper report on the Ball held in November of 1946 has been in the Historical Museum’s collection for some time. One can only imagine the celebrations – post World War II when all those young men from the district returned from the fighting and the social life of the region could return to some form of normality. • The invitation to the ball pictured left was recently donated to the Museum by Jean Sandell and is greatly appreciated. It is such donations that help keep our history alive for future generations who may never know the excitement of receiving a professionally printed invitation to a ball instead of an email or text message. • Kenilworth museum is still seeking old photographs of the Kenilworth Show – which can be forwarded as jpg to kenilworthmuseum@gmail.com or posted to PO Box 166, Kenilworth 4574 for copying and will be returned. COMMUNITY T

he SafeTALK workshop held in Kenilworth on the 6 October was an outstanding success. The presenter, Susan Griffith, was very experienced and professional in giving these workshops. Twelve people attended, and they departed with a greater knowledge of people at risk of suicide and how to recognise and approach such people. This issue is only one of many that influences community wellbeing, but with the official figure for suicide for 2017 in Australia being 3,128 and attempted suicides over 5,000, no community can ignore this issue. We tend not to hear of these events locally but they certainly do happen. The SafeTALK workshop followed the Mental Health First Aid course held late in August. Kenilworth now has a group of people with knowledge and skills to recognise and assist people who are experiencing mental / emotional / social challenges. I am aware that already two people have benefitted from this. As I have said previously, some people have contacted me wanting to attend a future Mental Health First Aid Course. I had hoped to organise one to be held in Imbil in November, but there is not enough time to organise and promote a workshop. It has been decided to leave this until after the summer school holidays. My aim is to have a community wellbeing network in the Mary River towns from Conondale, Kenilworth, Brooloo, Imbil, Kandanga, Amamoor and Dagun. We live in a wonderful natural environment, but remote from the services of big towns. It is my wish that everyone who lives here can fully enjoy our rural communities free of personal challenges and disadvantage. We will all be better off if this can be achieved. I am pleased to have your ideas about this. Bob Sample bobsample2@skymesh.com.au (0408 983 207)

2018 SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS AWARDS FINALIST

K

enilworth Boutique Accommodation was recognised recently for this 'Accommodation' at the annual Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Finalists for the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards were announced on Monday 24 September in recognition of the region’s outstanding business leadership. Amongst the 120 finalists, Kenilworth Boutique Accommodation was recognised in the category of Accommodation for their outstanding business management, innovation and growth. Initial judging of finalists examined each submission for key aspects of business, including customer service, innovation, use of technology and commitment to sustainability. “This year we were thrilled to be nominated by Visit Sunshine Coast and our customers, and undergoing the process of entering the awards has enabled us to really examine each area of our business to pinpoint and describe what we do well and how we focus on achieving our goals,” said owners Ross French and Dot Pienaar. In congratulating each of the finalists and winners, Awards Chair Jennifer Swaine said: “Once again it is fantastic and humbling to see firsthand the high calibre, innovative and progressive business community we have here at the thriving Sunshine Coast.” “It is truly inspiring and rewarding to hear the stories of each of the finalists; it is a very significant achievement to be recognised for such achievement and every business involved deserves acknowledgement,” she said. Ms Swaine added, “The quality and diversity of all of the entries across each of the awards was exceptional, which makes our job so much harder - It is inspiring to see so many passionate and motivated professionals locally, building a solid future for the Sunshine Coast’s continued success, and these finalists are ambassadors for not only their industry but our region looking into the future.”

6 | 10 OCTOBER 2018

Our past wreath making afternoons were so successful for 2017 Remembrance Day and this year’s ANZAC Day, on Saturday 10 November at 2pm we will be making wreaths for any of the organisations / businesses and families in Kenilworth who would like to have a wreath to lay at the service. • Donations for flowers will be gratefully received. We will leave containers of water outside the RSL Room at the Kenilworth Community Hall from early in the morning. Anyone who would like to help making the wreaths and have a laugh, will be very welcome. A cuppa and bickies will be available. Also for craft enthusiasts, we would appreciate donations of purple or white knitted, crocheted or cloth or ribbon poppies like the red ones we made in 2015 for Anzac Day. • The purple ones are to commemorate the animals of war, and white is for nurses. Poppies can be left at the Kenilworth library. These patterns below from the 5000 Poppies patterns for 2015. • Fiona's Budding Poppy Knitted Pattern pictured top. This poppy has five petals, it was knitted using 8 ply acrylic wool on 3.75mm needles. You can vary the number of petals but six petals did look too busy. Cast on the 4 stitches of the next petal on your empty needle – this way all petals finish on the same needle for ease of knitting row 16. Leave the running thread on your last petal and start row 16 to join all your petals with all having WS facing. Row 16: P4, *P2tog, P3, P2tog* to last 4, P4 (21 stitches) Row 17: K2tog to last K1 Cut running thread, leaving a tail to thread through the remaining stitches tie pull tight into circle and tie off. • Jen’s Very Simple Poppy Pattern Sl: slip stitch Ch: chain Tr: Treble/triple crochet Using first colour (black) Beginning ch4, join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring. COMMUNITY EUMUNDI KENILWORTH ROAD UPGRADE

W

ith heavy truck use and increased tourism, Eumundi Kenilworth Road has become unsafe and dangerous. I’m calling on the Transport Minister to upgrade this road urgently to make it safe for all users. This road was never designed or built to be a main thoroughfare for high frequency heavy haulage and locals and visitors are understandably scared for their safety. I have recently put a Question on Notice to the Minister about plans for the roads maintenance, written to Department of Transport and Main Roads and delivered this speech in Parliament. • To keep up to date and help me fight for this road for your community sign my petition at the link https://queensland. typeform.com/to/hfvOXa Nicklin Heroes Grants The second round of Nicklin Heroes Grants is now open and will close Wednesday 31 October. I have four grants of $250 available for community groups to cover the cost of equipment purchases or expenses for special events. The grants are also for individuals pursuing artistic, sporting or academic excellence, to cover the cost of travel, purchasing equipment, or entering regional and national competitions. Please visit my website www.martyhunt.com.au for more details about the application process and deadlines for future grant rounds and follow me on Facebook MartyHuntMP for the announcement of the winners. Mobile Office Thank you to everyone who visited me at my Kenilworth Mobile Office a few weeks at Kenilworth Town Park. My next Mobile Office is scheduled for the week beginning 10 December. So if you have any pressing issues with State Government matters, or you just fancy a quick chat, come to see me. Marty Hunt MP, State Member for Nicklin

PETITION: MORE BULK BILLING MRI'S

f you would like more local bulk billing of I costly MRI scans then please sign our petition. Buderim Private Hospital has launched a bid for

a Medicare-supported MRI licence which would mean cheaper scans for Sunshine Coast patients. The Federal Government is handing out 20 such licences across Australia and I would like the Sunshine Coast’s only not-for-profit hospital to receive one. Please sign the petition via my website www.tedobrien.com.au • I encourage you to speak out about aged care, following the Federal Government’s announcement of a Royal Commission. Aged care residents, carers, families and providers will be invited to make submissions and tell their stories and we want to hear yours. The Royal Commission is primarily looking at the quality of care in residential and home aged care but also but also at young Australians with disabilities living in residential aged care settings. The government is putting record funding towards aged care – hitting $26.5 billion in five years – as well as increasing funding of the Home Support Programme. Australia does have exemplary aged care but pressures have led to problems and we need to ensure they’re fixed. The commissioner will invite the public to make formal submissions. • Some good news for the Sunshine Coast with the council’s announcement of a deal to lay Australia’s fastest datalink cable to Asia and second fastest to the US just off Maroochydore. Most of what we do online travels through cables so this fast and direct link to the world will transform our region. Faster speeds and cheaper costs will also attract new investment. I’m proud to be part of the army of people who have brought this to the Coast and I will continue to serve my role in progressing the project. • As always please get in touch with issues or queries, via the landline 5479 2800, email ted.obrien.mp@aph.gov.au or visit in person at 17 Southern Drive, Maroochydore. #maryrivermonth. There are opportunities to become a citizen scientist, bushcare volunteer, prize winning photographer, to take a cruise, attend a workshop, come to an information day, soak up the culture or just go jump in the creek! As the southernmost catchment flowing to the Great Barrier Reef, keeping the Mary River Catchment and Great Sandy Strait healthy is the key focus of Mary River Month. The MRCCC’s Dr Tanzi Smith says, “Spring is an important time when our native fauna and many of our threatened aquatic species like the Mary River Cod, Lungfish, Mary River Turtle and Giant barred Frog all start to breed. Mary River Month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the beautiful Mary River catchment, to learn new things and to connect with other members of the community who want to leave a healthy environment for future generations.” • Mary River Month kicked off with the Big Jump on World Rivers Day, Sunday 23 September. Everyone in the catchment from Maleny to Fraser Island joined with millions of folk, in more than 70 countries, in a global celebration of efforts to keep our rivers clean. COMMUNITY IMBIL POLICE BRIEF SEPTEMBER 2018

T

he Imbil Police Division has unfortunately seen two fatal traffic incidents this year and we are very keen to prevent any further incidents. As always keep in mind the fatal five, speeding, drink and drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction. DIVISION 8 GYMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL

T

he Valley is alive – with the sound of music. Our beautiful country and relaxed lifestyle has again been ideal for staging music events such as the Mary Valley College musical and the Mitchell Creek Rock ‘N’ Blues Fest (hot on the heels of the Country Music Muster). These events though can only happen with creative people at the helm and hardworking people in the engine room. This is our brand. Congratulations to all. • Council has announced timelines for the construction of the skatepark and the rail trail at Imbil. When completed, they will provide a new outlet for the energies of their respective clients. These improvements are for the whole of the Mary Valley to use, as different things will happen in each town. These days transport is less of an issue than in the days when our forebears only had horses, so hop in the car and enjoy everything new up or down the road. • Kandanga is rightly getting a great name as an RV town, in some people’s eyes too much so. I accept that the impact on locals has to be managed, so I am eagerly awaiting council’s Draft RV Strategy. This will hopefully open the door for public input that will help form a vision for Kandanga as a good place to live, as well as to visit. There is much work to be done. As always, contact me if I can assist in any council matters. Phone or SMS: 0418 708 745 Email: bob.fredman@gympie.qld.gov.au

SPRING FESTIVALS SCARECROWS HAVE A NEW ROLE IN MARY VALLEY

S

carecrows will be robbing the Mary Valley of more than one kind of pest this spring, as organisers officially open scarecrow season. A new category with $100 prize money has been offered for scarecrows made from the area’s aggressively invasive vine – cats claw. Harvesting the woody fibre helps revive local vegetation, while making scarecrows has historically been a cue for local birdlife to leave farmers’ crops alone. The festival runs from 1 October to 10 November, and entries needed to be registered and displayed by October 1 to be judged. A $100 prize is on offer in the traditional and artistic categories, as well as cats claw, with $50 for the children’s category (five years to 15 years). Keen residents picked up some tips on using cats claw at the weaving workshop held in conjunction with the Mary River Festival at the weekend at Kandanga. • Installation artist Rene Bahloo pictured top shared her skills and thoughts about weaving our world into a better place. Book for the next workshop via email cy78@activ8.net.au or phone Glenda on 0411 43589. The scarecrow festival had its origins in the Mary Valley hinterland and has been held for more than 15 years, with ‘crows popping up in obvious and unlikely places from Conondale through to Dagun near Gympie. There’s a map to lead you down country roads and discover new places, and it's a great excuse to pack a picnic and tour through Mary Valley Country. The locals will tell you that it’s all about fun. A few ‘crows have a distinct purpose in life, carrying on as their forebears did, protecting crops by scaring away the birds. But others are just there to dress up the paddocks and maybe even share the wry

n the 1-2 September, Catriona went to the Redcliffe Pony Club One Day Event and although she didn't place in the Top 5, she was very happy with her results as she stepped up to the next height of 60cm. On 2 September, Jodi and Alice competed at the Widgee & District Pony Club Campdraft. Alice came fourth overall. Later in the month, Alice and Jodi both went on to compete at the National Barrel Horse Association Championships in Tamworth (18-23 Sept.). They went well, but did not bring home any prizes. Jodi, Alice, Rachael and Peta are all set for the State Formal Gymkhana, Sporting, Campdraft, Stockman's Challenge & Mounted Games that spans Tuesday 2 October to Friday 5 October at Maryborough Equestrian Park. For regular readers, you may remember an “old” KPC favourite from a few years ago, Caeli’s pony, Prince, who has also been training hard and has his debut at State Championships on the Thursday (Gymkhana) and Friday (Sporting). We wish them all well and will update readers next month on how they went. • Our next muster is 13 October. Pictured top, Prince is going to his first ever State Championships at Maryborough.

KANDANGA STUDENTS AIM FOR 'CROW PRIZE

K

andanga State School is working to increase its student numbers as 2019 nears, and it’s events like the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival which allow the student body to show off. The school prides itself on its community connections, and its students won the children’s category of the annual scarecrow festival last year. P&C spokeswoman Lesa Bell said the children were eager to build their scarecrow entry this year before school broke for the September holidays, and they are hoping to impress the judges for the second year in a row. Their scarecrows are in the mix for cash prizes across four categories, including one for scarecrows made from the area’s 12 | 10 OCTOBER 2018

beyondblue suicide prevention program that supports people following a suicide attempt is expanding, as data illustrates the need for better suicide aftercare in Australia. To coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day 2018, new figures show beyondblue’s innovative The Way Back Support Service is saving lives. The service has supported more than 2,039 people discharged from hospital after a suicide attempt or suicidal crisis. • Of all referrals, 1,568 people – or 77 percent – engaged with the programme, a significant number given half of all people who attempt suicide do not participate in follow up support and treatment. Suicide rates among those who have participated in the Way Back are below one percent – much lower than would be expected without support. “This tells us that The Way Back is doing just what it’s designed to do – fill a gap by connecting people to services and supporting people to find their way back to life following a suicide attempt,” said Chair of beyondblue The Hon. Julia Gillard AC. • Too often those discharged from hospital have no choice but to return to the circumstances that contributed to their distress. Research shows these people are highly vulnerable to further suicide attempts, esp. in the three months following discharge. Data illustrates the need for us to do better for these people and their loved ones: • Eight people die by suicide every day in Australia • More than 240 people attempt suicide each day across Australia • Suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 44yrs. Hospitals refer people to The Way Back Support Service where they receive one-on-one practical assistance in the community. The Way Back support workers help the person to make a suicide safety plan, keep specialist appointments, and work through issues that may have contributed to suicidal thinking such as loneliness, isolation, employment and relationship challenges. The service, which began as a trial in Darwin in 2014, operates in partnership with hospitals at seven sites – Newcastle, Canberra, Geelong, Murrumbidgee, Redcliffe and NSW North Coast. “The Commonwealth government has recognised the importance of this service, having dedicated $37.6 million towards its expansion over the next four years through Primary Health Networks,” Ms Gillard said. “We at beyondblue will contribute another $5 million. The Way Back Support Service is ready, now, for national rollout. If states and territories can get behind it too, we know this expansion has the potential to support up to 28,000 people, and their families, find their way back after a suicide attempt.” • beyondblue is also reassuring people it is safe to talk about suicide. The #YouCanTalk campaign, a collaboration between mental health and suicide prevention organisations, is encouraging people to learn the signs and what to say to someone at risk of suicide: www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/suicide-prevention • Mental health professionals are available at the beyondblue Support Service via phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via www. beyondblue.org.au/get-support for online chat (3pm to 12am) AEST or email responses (within 24 hours).
