With this added day of operation, we now see the Mary Valley Rattler operating across five days from Wednesday through to Sunday. Mary Valley Rattler General Manager David Thompson is proud of the volunteer teams who work tirelessly to deliver this heritage experience to the ever-growing number of guests coming on board. “The comments I am hearing as guests return to the Station after their journey is that they are loving the experience, the scenery and the connection with our local communities on the train and at the Stations. We want our locals to be proud of this fantastic tourism experience that has seen thousands of travellers ride the Rattler trains since commencement of services in October 2018. We have welcomed many Gympie residents over the past months on the steam train and we would like to invite our locals to jump on board the Rattler Picnic Train and enjoy that experience as well,” David said. The Rattler Picnic Train’s journey is on the vintage railmotor RM76 which traditionally ran the Brooloo line to Gympie providing a daily link to the town for shopping, the transportation of goods and a means for children to get to school. • As a *special offer available until 30 June 2019, locals can enjoy a 50% discount offer for travel when booking online at maryvalleyrattler.com.au and using the code: LOCALPICNIC at time of booking. There is an option to also purchase a picnic hamper for the journey at $25.00 per person or you can pack you own lunch or enjoy the offerings from the Amamoor General Store. “We look forward to welcoming our local community to experience this journey with their families or visiting friends,” Mr Thompson said. *This special offer is available for the local travellers only. Photo identification from a Gympie Regional postcode is required on check-in and travel is subject to availability.

ur AGM on 4 March was well attended with the Bowls Club supplying very tasty finger food and our very own poet, Ian Mackay, keeping us laughing with his wonderful poetry. Ian’s poetry and Stewart’s pizzas have got us thinking about holding a 'Poetry and Pizzas in the Park' function after Easter. There was only one change in the KAC executive with Susan Hennessy coming in as Treasurer, a position previously held by Lisa Rohan, as well as that of Secretary. KAC members had a very pleasant social gathering with morning tea at Little Yabba on 22 March. We hope to be holding another informal function again soon. • On Easter Saturday, there will be arts and crafts and all sorts of trash and treasure on sale at the KAC building up near the library. There will probably be a sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas and a cake stall. Come on up! • The plans are well in hand for the Bush to Beach Art Show with the Artists Alliance Australia 28 June to 1 July in the Kenilworth Hall. Opening Night on Friday 28 June will be a very happy night. So, on with the glad rags and a bit of bling for a fun evening! The exhibition will be opened by two well known and well respected local artists – Pam Hopkins and Dr Jandamarra Cadd. You might have seen in Sunshine Coast Daily, 23 March, Dr Cadd’s portrait of Nova Peris, which he is entering in the 2019 Archibald Prize.

WHAT OTHER NEWS IN KENILWORTH IN 1919?
ooking back 1919 was a busy year for the young Kenilworth community. “Our boys” were back from the Great War and the year began optimistically with hopes for a bright future, with local news being regularly reported in newspapers. The Kenilworth State School’s new master is Mr Fred Wm. Hacker, from Hillgrove. Well caned boys will no doubt want to spell his surname with a W. (Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Adviser, 17.1.1919, page 5). It was reported on page six of the February 15 edition of the Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette that Mr Harry Pickering was elected unopposed for the number 1 division of the Maroochy Shire in place of ex-Cr Sharry, who retired by effluxion of time but did not offer himself for re-election. The Shire general rate for Division 1 was 4d which was a slight increase on the previous year’s general rates. (Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette, 1.3.1919, page 3) The second annual meeting of the Kenilworth Farmer’s Cooperative Store was held in April in the Eumundi School of Arts. (Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette, 19.4.1919, page 6). The Director’s report read:- The result of the year’s trading has been most satisfactory, although drought conditions have existed for such a lengthened period: The stock has been turned over a good many times and although larger than last year, it is fresh and up to date. The annual Hospital Ball in aid of the Gympie Hospital was held in early April in the Kenilworth Farmers Association Hall. The Association gave the hall free of charge, an act of generosity which was appreciated by the organiser Mrs Beattie, likewise the committee of the hospital. (Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette, 19.4.1919, page 5). Ethel McGinn and Edward Loweke were married in the home of her father Mr John McGinn on April 30 with the Rev. C. Tunstall of Nambour officiating (Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, 9.5.1919, page 5). Pictured top Ethel and Edward's wedding. In May a report was published in the Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser (2.5.1919, page 3) of the visit of a cricket team from Cedar Creek over the Easter period. Visits by the Cedar Creek team were begun some years earlier when the family connections organised the regular Easter visits. Pickering and McGinn players were fielded by both teams. Kenilworth won the 1919 match by an innings and 26 runs.

C
ouncillor Greg Rogerson, Tom Jamieson, Group Executive Built Infrastructure, and I met with local residents and representatives from several state government bodies to address issues raised by the community after a television program aired on The Great Weekender promoting this wonderful natural asset. We all agreed for the need to ensure everyone, whether local or visiting, can use and enjoy Conondale National Park’s natural attributes respectfully while also recognising that locals reside in this special place. There were safety and access issues raised that council will review over the coming weeks and months. Remember – a trip to Booloumba Creek would not be complete without dropping into Kenilworth Dairies for a quick ice cream and catch-up with John. Your next adventure is just around the corner Are you ready for an adventure this weekend? There’s an adventure around every corner on the Sunshine Coast and now they are easier to find. Adventure Sunshine Coast is a revolutionary new website that will transform the way you find walking, cycling, biking, horseriding and paddling trails. Visit adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and simply choose an activity, select the difficulty level to receive all your local trails with photos, descriptions and reviews. Why not discover one of the lesser known trails right on our doorstep in Division 5 – have you heard of the Martin Williams Walk, the Obi Obi Lookout, or the Hinterland Great Walk? Share your adventure using the #adventuresunshinecoast on social media. BioBlitz wraps up – Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve recently hosted our region’s first ever BioBlitz event which saw scientists from across Australia and local artists come together to explore the rainforest’s biodiversity. It was an honour to celebrate the launch of this special scientific event alongside Jinibara Elder Uncle Noel Blair and the talented BioBlitz Survey Team. I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those involved, especially the remarkable volunteers who are so dedicated to the preservation of this precious reserve. For highlights of the launch event and surveying work done in the five strangler fig trees, check out council’s Facebook page. Top – The BioBlitz Survey Team is joined by Jinibara Elder Uncle Noel Blair, Cr Jenny McKay, and young members of the Jinibara dance troop, Amaru-Jayne Fisher and Megan-Evi Fisher. Inset L-R – John Cochrane (Kenilworth Dairies), Cr McKay, Cr Rogerson, Tom Jamieson (Group Executive Built Infrastructure).
BOOLOUMBA CREEK RD AND THE T INTERSECTION WITH THE MALENY-KENILWORTH RD
R
esidents of Booloumba Creek Rd and other concerned locals met with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC), Qld Parks and Wildlife (QPWS) and Qld Police from Maleny. This meeting was convened due to the increased use of Booloumba Creek Rd (pictured the busy creek crossing January 2019) as the access road to the Conondale National Park. Booloumba Creek was shown on The Queensland Weekender program in late 2018 and March 2019. This has resulted in a large increase of visiting vehicles to the area. Councillors Jenny McKay and Greg Rogerson and SCC Infrastructure, Tom Jamieson will be getting back to the Booloumba Creek residents’ representative about the issues below. • The unsafe T intersection of Booloumba Creek Rd with the single lane bitumen Maleny Kenilworth Rd. • The lack of a speed limit on Booloumba Creek Rd and the 80km speed limit on the Maleny Kenilworth Rd will be reviewed by the “Speed Review Committee” (with representation from DTMR, Qld Police and SCC). • SCC will consider placing a “Traffic Counter Strip” at the start of Booloumba Creek Rd. • SCC will look at increasing signage along Booloumba Creek Rd to increase public safety. Any traffic incidents / near misses or public safety issues on these sections of roads can be reported to Maleny Police for data collection. Any bad experiences with drunken behaviour or other issues relating to public safety within the national park should be reported to QPWS and Maleny Police. There is a phone at the entrance to the No.1 Camping area.

COMMUNITY TED O'BRIEN MP
he Sunshine Coast region is again a big winner in this year’s Federal Budget. I am delighted that the Liberal Nationals Government has committed an additional $91.4 million towards upgrading the Maroochydore and Mons Road interchanges on the Bruce Highway, bringing our total commitment to $241million. This funding will see significant improvements made to what is already a major gateway to the hinterland. The project will provide two-way service roads on the western and eastern side of the interchange and install new drainage to further mitigate flood risk. The Budget is also a winner for Men’s and Women’s Sheds across the country and this is something I take personal pride in, as securing tax deductibility status for Sheds has been something of a personal crusade. Granting Deductable Gift Recipient (DGR) status to Sheds means anyone making a donation of $2 or more can claim that donation as an income tax deduction from July 1, 2020. This puts sheds on an even footing with thousands of other organisations and charities. It also means Men’s and Women’s Sheds will be eligible to apply for grants from philanthropic foundations, opening them up to an entirely new fundraising stream. Sheds are so much more than blokes banging nails into wood, they’re also about inclusion and they’re successfully addressing issues of loneliness, mental health and other conditions in our communities. I am delighted the Liberal Nationals Government has taken this step because it demonstrates a true recognition of what Sheds truly are. • The hinterland is also set to benefit from two more mobile base stations which will improve connectivity for both locals and visitors to the region. The popular camping area of Charlie Moreland near Kenilworth has been identified for a small cell base station, while a new macro base station will go up in Mapleton. Both are notorious mobile black spots. As always please get in touch with issues, concerns or inquiries on 5479 2800, email ted.obrien.mp@aph.gov.au

Research suggests our region has some of the best health outcomes in the nation, while our great outdoors continues to attract growing numbers of local and international visitors for sporting events, conferences and holidays. We love our sport and are home to the Sunshine Coast Lightning – Australia’s most successful start-up national sporting team – and to the Pro Racing Sunshine Coast cycling stars, who are shining internationally. Council is also investing in community sport and recreation facilities like our multi-million-dollar upgrades to the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex and the Caloundra Tennis Centre, which started recently. These upgraded venues will provide better facilities for local AFL, netball and tennis players at all levels. Council continues to invest in bikeways and coastal pathways, and protect our green space by adding to our environmental landholdings. The Healthy Sunshine Coast program caters for all ages and abilities, and for the coming school holidays council has launched the Sunshine Coast Adventure online guidebook to hiking, biking, horseride, canoeing activities for all the family. Kenilworth community transport update Thanks to an enthusiastic group of volunteer drivers and a committee worth their weight in gold, the Kenilworth Community Transport Service is almost ready to hit the road. The pre-booked service will provide return travel to Nambour, Maleny, Mapleton, Eumundi and Yandina, with extra trips by arrangement. Thanks to David Coles, Graeme White, Des King and Amanda Anthopoulos. They have been busy with operational details, organising driver training and promoting the service. Locals living within 6.5km of Kenilworth Post Office can register or book the community transport service at the Kenilworth Visitor Information Centre or email KTCSKworth@gmail.com This transport service is a first for the region and I’m proud to have worked with the community to pull it together.
The wait is finally over Construction of Kenilworth’s ‘Canistrum’ in Isaac Moore Park is underway. The competition for the Kenilworth Designer Dunny received entries from around the world with the winning entry ‘‘Canistrum’ by Maleny artist, Michael Lennie. Council has since worked with the artist and project architects to arrive at construction plans that fulfil the artist’s vision and work within the project’s budget. Weather permitting, the project will be complete late 2019.

Protecting the Mary River Turtle Foxes and feral animals have been given notice by Mary River landowners protecting one of the most endangered reptiles on the planet, a little turtle who often sports a green ‘mohawk’ of moss. The Mary River ‘punk rocker’ turtle, found only in the Mary River catchment, is extremely vulnerable to introduced predators such as wild dogs, foxes, feral pigs and feral cats, which prey on the turtles and their eggs. To protect this unique character, landowners, Landcare groups and four councils are rolling out the Mary River Turtle Protection Program. It’s a joint effort that involves reducing feral animal numbers, fencing the nesting banks to reduce cattle trampling and protecting the individual nests from predation to boost hatchling numbers and nesting females. Find out more about the project on the Mary River Turtle Project Tiaro Landcare Facebook page or contact council on 07 5475 7272 to become involved protecting our wildlife.

COMMUNITY ello out there, Kenilworth Community! The Mary Valley Voice needs your help! The MVV needs a Minutes Secretary. Is anyone out there willing to take on this job? The Minutes Secretary’s tasks are not difficult and does not take up much time. They involve taking the minutes at the meetings and then emailing them out to the committee members. The committee meets six or seven times a year. Well, you might ask, if that’s all there is to it, why did you retire from the job? When I stepped down from the secretary’s job which I had been doing for years and years, it was in the hope that someone younger with fresh ideas might come on board. The longer we “oldies” hang on, the less likely younger folk are to be attracted to local organisations. Kenilworth has always had community organisations that have initiated wonderful, progressive outcomes for our town and district. The Mary Valley Voice is one of them. I know there are younger folk on various Kenilworth committees and they are making a great contribution. So, come on you young ones! Anyone for The Mary Valley Voice? We’d love to hear from you! KENILWORTH PONY CLUB
M
arch was a busy month for the Club with its members busy out competing whilst also holding a beginners Tetrathalon. For all of you that don’t know what that is it’s a 4-phase event with swimming, running, riding and shooting (laser pistol). Firstly thank you to our competitors and their families for making the trek to Kenilworth for our first Tetrathlon. It was a learning curve for all of us, competitors and organisers alike, and we appreciate your support. Sorry but there is a long list of people to thank: Kenilworth Showgrounds – for providing the lovely facilities. Kenilworth Swimming Pool – for the use of pool and helping with setting up the lane ropes, etc. Mary Valley First Aid, Wayne and Joyce – for being on hand just in case they were needed. Barry Dosetto – for providing us with the technical support and know-how in the lead up to the day along with setting up and running the laser pistol phase of the competition.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION AT QUARTZ HUB
n April, photographers from all over the Gympie region unite for the first time, at the Quartz Hub at 13 River Road, Gympie. This new exhibition is family friendly and open 10am3pm weekdays, till 6pm Thursday and 9am-12noon Saturdays. • Photographer, Carolyn Shearn and her students Sharon Templeton, Kathy Price, Gaylene Bayfield, Naomi Edwards, Teresa Day and Lee Garrels, are proudly exhibiting an eclectic selection of photography during the Autumn month of April. All the exhibitors are proudly local from the beautiful Mary Valley, to the hills in Kilkivan and all throughout Gympie proper. They are exhibiting some of their favourite photography on various mediums, in various sizes, and presented in many different ways from corrugated iron, to rustic timber clip-boards, and everything in between. The goal is to showcase local and emerging photographers, and encourage everyone to value, not only what we have to see and do in our fabulous region, but to value photography in its own right, and celebrate our talented emerging local photographers. For some of the photographers this is the first time they have ever made their work public, so this event is a massive personal challenge for them. “We all tend to live in our comfortable and safe life bubble we have created, not pushing our limits, not reaching further than where we have already reached sometime in our past. 'Stepping outside the square' is how we learn about ourselves and grow as better humans. So congratulations to my fabulous students who have taken the plunge and facing public scrutiny. It is what others wish they could do!” said Carolyn. Everyone is welcome to come along and explore our breathtaking country, the way it was seen through the photographers' creative lens. Know what you will see is all made with pure love, and presented with great thrill and excitement! Some of the works will be available for sale, and if you want a different medium or size, or finish please complete the details at the front desk in the shop and the artist will contact you direct to discuss your query. Most images can be enlarged to considerable sizing, and printed on most mediums.

CR BOB FREDMAN
DIVISION 8 GYMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL
I
mbil is the place to be over Easter, with our energetic local team of volunteers planning a range of activities starting with the Dinner Under the Stars. The dinner was a sellout last year and many patrons said they will be there this year again. It’s a unique experience for Easter Friday night. Saturday will be a big day for families. See you at Imbil Easter Carnival! Amamoor is bidding to be the coffee capital of the Valley with another outlet opening. This is largely in response to the new train schedule which allows time for a coffee. What it also means is that those of us not on the train will have even more options for where to sit down and enjoy the quaint hospitality that Amamoor provides (but I suggest you avoid the train traffic). Go Amamoor! Phone or SMS me on 0418 708 745; or email bob.fredman@ gympie.qld.gov.au if I can assist in any council matters.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF COUNTRY MUSIC
he 15 March Open Mic evening at AICM, 28 Channon Street, Gympie again thrilled the audience. Held every third Friday of the each month, performers of all genre are welcome. Robyn Hamilton, guitarist, supporting band member and central AICM personality, said “Great performances tonight, and with Chris Kath’s jokes in between, made for a really successful evening. I’m glad the U3A ladies came along. What fun!” Pictured the U3A ladies. Names on the whiteboard included mature groups and singers, through to new, young performers. Light social chatting and mixing, with tea, coffee, soft drinks and a delightful, cheap, BBQ meal beforehand was enjoyed by the artists and audience. Although more people attended, it was not crowded. • The Limeburners played the closing set and many audience members who were still there were dancing, finishing the night off with joy and not wanting to end and go home. • All artists and audience are invited to the next Open Mic Night at the AICM – 6.30pm Friday 19 April (Good Friday) Cost of entry is $5. Call Robyn 0429 011 783 for further info.

KENILWORTH FOOD FEST 29 JUNE 2019
he Kenilworth Cheese Wine and Food Festival has morphed into the Kenilworth Food Fest for 2019. Along with the name change, comes a new date as well. List this date in your diaries: 29 June, 2019. We have listened to feedback from all our clientele and feel that celebrating this day-long event in winter offers a respite from the summer heat, while allowing us to develop the range of providores and offerings. It’s going to be a great day out sampling local food and wines with an uber friendly atmosphere. GHEERULLA TENNIS CLUB NEWS
reat fun was had by all who attended the club’s Free Family Fun Tennis morning held on Sunday, 24 March. Drinks, tasty homemade goodies and a sausage sizzle kept participants energised throughout the morning. Coach, Rob Schmitt, ran fun tennis sessions for junior players and a cardio-
fit tennis session for adults. His assistance on the day was integral to the success of this event, and we thank him sincerely for his time. • The club extends its sincere thanks to the Sunshine Coast Regional Tennis Assembly for providing funding of $500.00 through the Sunshine Coast Outlying Grants Program to promote and host this event, and to Tennis Australia for providing tennis equipment for our club and prize giveaways for participants. Our thanks also to Imbil Tennis Club for the loan of their ball machine. The Gheerulla Tennis Club hopes to hold another family fun tennis morning in the future, and thanks club volunteers and participants for making this such an enjoyable event. For more information on the Gheerulla Tennis Club, please contact Sue Field (0412 495 169), Richard Edwards (0407 578 548) or Robyn Pfeiffer (0403 516 699).
