KENILWORTH HISTORY M

y mother always referred to the public holiday on the first Monday in May as “eight-hour day” – which was established in Queensland in 1901. The first celebration took place in Brisbane on 16 March 1861 and was essentially a celebration by a small number of skilled building workers who had recently achieved an eight-hour working day. In the early part of the 20th century it was celebrated as “May Day” and since 1912 has been known as Labour Day holiday. May Day 1954 (news article below) was celebrated in Kenilworth with a massive fund raising event to support the construction of St Luke’s Church of England (opened December, 1955). There are too many interesting aspects of the report to leave any out − particularly events like “blindfold driving” and “reverse obstacle race”. Sadly many of those mentioned in the report are no longer with us but for those who remember that event and ball I am sure it will bring back happy memories. DUNCAN BEATTIE 1859-1945

uncan Beattie was the son of Robert and Catherine Beattie, of Inverness in Scotland. Duncan aged 20 came to Australia, leaving Glasgow, Scotland on 5 June 1875 and arriving in Brisbane on 20 September 1875, travelling on the ‘Renfrewshire’ 900 tonnes. Captain Barr was the captain. In 1883 Duncan married Jane* Walker (born 1859 − died 1937) in Victoria, Australia. *Jane changed her name to Jessie. Her father Robert Walker married Mary Wilson. They arrived in Australia from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and on arrival in Victoria lived at Egerton where he became a carter for 23 years before moving to Queensland in 1877. They settled at Stanley River and named the place ‘Hazeldean’ by which name the district is still known today. ‘Kenilworth Run’ was purchased by the Moore family. They also leased 73 square miles of Crown land at Jimna run. This made with both Cambroon and Conondale nearly 100 square miles. Kenilworth was renowned for it’s prize Hereford herd and it’s thoroughbreds. Particularly a mare named The Nun, winner of the 1886 Victoria Oaks. Her progeny raced with success on the Brisbane circuit. From 1891-1921 Duncan Beattie managed Kenilworth Run. This was the beginning, in 1920 of shires being established and settlements established. The township of Kenilworth became part of Maroochy Shire. Duncan being the presiding chairman of the divisional board from 1900-1901. When the blocks were sold he bought ‘Glenroy’, across the Mary River from the Station homestead. He chose the name ‘Glenroy’ on account of his old home in Scotland being on the Roy River and down from Ben Nevif making a Glen, the property has been in the family for four generations. Bob Beattie, his oldest son became a well known Australian judge of both horses and cattle. He ran a famous Jersey herd, winning the prestigious award at the Brisbane Show of Champion of Champions with 'Orphanage Golden Boy'. The house was built in 1921 from timber growing on the land, red and white cedar, and silky oak being the main timbers. It has been a home to all and loved and cared for by all four generations. The garden in the house yard has many established fruit trees including an olive and fig. These attract many varieties of birds. Town water is connected, making it easy for country people when it’s a dry season. There are two large rain water tanks installed at the residence. There are two dams, and a town water trough. The block on the lower side is joined by the Mary River. 'Glenroy' is situated an easy walking distance to the township where there are a variety of shops and sporting facilities, also the well equipped show and recreation grounds with a large public hall. The Beattie family were known for their hospitality and contributing to the betterment of Kenilworth. The land was given by Bob Beattie for the township's sewerage plant. FREE BREAST CANCER SCREENING RESUMES ON SUNSHINE COAST

reastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service (BSQSC) will resume routine breast screening in May following the temporary suspension of service due to Novel Coronavirus (COVID–19). Clinical Director of BSQSC, Dr Alison Roper said BreastScreen Queensland was an important early detection service for women, which reduced illness and death from breast cancer. “The wellbeing of women and our staff is always our top priority. BreastScreen Queensland is implementing a range of strategies to minimise and address risk from COVID-19 for women who attend for breast screening and also our staff, she said. “Following infection control and public health advice, social distancing will be maintained in waiting areas and additional cleaning of facilities and equipment has been implemented. Women who had an appointment cancelled will be contacted to make a new appointment. “We understand that some women may have concerns about attending screening at this time. If this is you, please talk to your own doctor about whether breast screening at this time is right for you, based on your individual circumstances.” Dr Roper said. BreastScreen Queensland has clinics in Gympie, Noosa, Nambour, Maroochydore, Caloundra and Caboolture. The mobile breast screening service will return to Tin Can Bay at the end of May, followed by Maleny and Kilcoy in June and Bribie Island in July. “While our service was suspended, some of our staff were redeployed to other areas of the health service. They are now keen to get back to providing a world-class breast cancer screening service for women on the Sunshine Coast,” Dr Roper said. Women aged 50 – 74 can book a free breast screen by phoning 13 20 50.

region navigate into and through the recovery phase and be wellpositioned into the future. Now, more than ever, there will be a need to work collaboratively and decisively in the interests of keeping our community safe and re-instilling confidence in the future for themselves and for our region. I am optimistic there is a prevailing willingness across the team to roll their sleeves up and do the hard yards so that the community is well-placed both now and as we move through and beyond the current crisis. I have always said that the most important thing any government can do is provide confidence to its constituency and I believe this is precisely what our council can and will do,” he said. Mayor Jamieson also took the opportunity to acknowledge and thank outgoing councillors Tim Dwyer, Jenny McKay, John Connolly, Stephen Robinson and Greg Rogerson for their service and contributions to the region during their time as elected reps. “Our community has been well served by Tim, Jenny, John, Stephen and Greg and I would like to thank each of them for their contributions to the region as Councillors and wish them every success in their future endeavours. In the case of long serving Councillors Tim Dwyer and Jenny McKay, they leave extensive legacies and big shoes to fill, but I am confident their successors are more than up to the task.” Mayor Jamieson said a statutory post-election meeting will be held and Council would consider the appointment of a Deputy Mayor and council meeting schedule for the remainder of the year. “Of course, this meeting will be conducted a little differently to those held in the past to comply with the national public health directions currently in place due to COVID-19,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Council is finalising arrangements for the meeting with livestreaming capabilities and will keep our community informed on how they can view the meeting live and online.”

want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone for doing their bit to flatten the curve and I want to acknowledge just how tough the past couple of months have been. Businesses have closed, people have lost their jobs, and families are juggling shared work and learning spaces at home. Most recently, Federal Government support has come in the form of a $74 million mental health package, in free child care to support families and the child care industry and in the Government’s third financial stimulus package – an unprecedented $130 billion to help keep people in jobs. The new JobKeeper Payment is a $1500 a fortnight wage subsidy for eligible employees of businesses, including sole traders, down 30% on revenue due to Coronavirus. For details head to www.ato.gov.au/general/JobKeeper-Payment Socially, your good work also means the first of many restrictions are starting to ease. We’re finally able to relax at the beach or picnic in the park again. Restrictions on elective surgery and IVF procedures are being eased and further relaxations are being announced. We have a long way to go of course, but continuing to be mindful of social distancing and of washing or sanitising our hands, will help keep the curve down and allow more restrictions to fall. The new COVIDSafe app is another way we can keep community transmission down. It uses Bluetooth technology to note when you come within 1.5 metres, for a period of 15 minutes or more, of another COVIDSafe app user. The information is confidential, fully encrypted and stored on your own phone, but importantly, if that person is later diagnosed with Coronavirus, health authorities can quickly and easily notify you of your exposure. was pleased to see the great response to ANZAC Day observed around our community. People dressed up and took part in driveway commemorations in great numbers. My family and I built a small tribute in the front yard and streamed the dawn service provided by the RSL as did many of my neighbours. It is such an important part of our Australian culture to remember those who have served to protect us and it was great to see that as a community we didn’t let them down this year with the challenges we faced. Thank you to those who submitted local stories of our service men and women for inclusion on my April ANZAC Facebook tributes. • As our infection rates in the Covic-19 pandemic appear to be quite low we are seeing the easing of some restrictions. I particularly look forward to business activity and employment start to return at least to some sort of normal and schools resume. I would also love to start visiting people again face to face. I have had many phone meetings, however there’s nothing like visiting someone and seeing an issue first hand. This can only start to happen if we see rates stay low, so let’s all do our part and follow the current advice. You will soon receive some handy contacts and references in the mail from me to make sure you’re up to date and can get help quickly if you need it so look out for that. • We have two new Councillors for our area. Congratulations to Councillor Winston Johnston in Division 5 (Jenny McKay’s former area) and Councillor David Law Division 10 (Greg Rogerson’s former area). I have contacted and congratulated both new Councillors and offered to work together for the good of our communities. I had such a great working relationship with both Jenny and Rogo, and hope to carry that forward with the new Councillors. With the Federal Members Ted O’Brien and Andrew Wallace, all levels of Government have been in constant contact working together and it is pleasing to see that this will continue. MARY VALLEY NEW GRANT TO HELP LOCAL RETAIL MOVE ONLINE: APPLY BY 30 MAY

ympie Regional Council are trialling a new E-Commerce Grants Program initially for retail businesses to help them trade online. Eligible businesses can apply to receive financial assistance to help create their own social media page and website, along with all the training they need to begin operating online. “The COVID-19 crisis has escalated the need for businesses to adapt from a traditional retail outlet to an online store,” Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said. “Businesses are doing it tough, either temporally shutting their doors or experiencing a significant drop in customers as we all stay at home. To support our local business community, Council have put together a grants program for businesses to help them trade online.” “It is important during these difficult times that we support our local businesses by shopping locally wherever possible,” he said. • Applications for Round One of the Grants Program are now open and close on 30 May 2020. GYMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL MEET FOR FIRST TIME

new look Gympie Regional Council officially met for the first time this morning. Chaired by newly elected Mayor Cr Glen Hartwig, the meeting was live streamed via council’s Facebook page in an effort to adhere to social distancing recommendations. “Now the blur of campaigning is over, and we as a Council have met for the first time, we can now start performing in our roles, for community,” Cr Hartwig said after the meeting. “As a new Council we will not always get it right, but we always take responsibility. It was humbling to be elected Mayor and it was humbling to chair this first meeting of this Council. “Now is when the real work will start,” Cr Hartwig said. Gympie Regional Council endorsed a number of legislative recommendations during the meeting, including the allocation of Councillors to portfolios and the appointment of councillors to various committees throughout the community. A recommendation to continue the appointment through to December 2020 of two independent members to Council’s Audit and Risk Management Committee was also endorsed. Cr Smerdon ‘honoured’ to be appointed Deputy Mayor Division six Councillor Hilary Smerdon was unanimously endorsed as Gympie Regional Council’s Deputy Mayor this morning during what was the first meeting of the newly elected Council. Nominated by division two councillor Dolly Jensen, Cr Smerdon said he was ‘honoured’ to perform in the role. “The Deputy Mayor position is about assisting the Council and by extension our community in a number of ways. “As Deputy Mayor I will endeavour to assist Councillor Hartwig in his role and perform my duties in the community with the same motivation and commitment as I did as a councillor in my last term. “I would like to thank the community and this Council for their support and faith in my ability to do this job. I look forward to representing you all in my capacity as Deputy Mayor,” Cr Smerdon said.

t is a privilege to be your new Division 10 Councillor representing the people of Kenilworth on the Sunshine Coast Council for the next four years. I moved to Nambour with my wife Karen in 2001 to raise our family and I’ve played an active part in community life since then. We now have three teenage children, all musicians and sometimes we perform as a family band. I have worked in the not-for-profit community service sector for the last 25 years, with the last 18 years in Disability. I was the first manager of the Children’s Therapy Centre in Nambour, securing recurrent funding from government to secure its viability. From there I moved to Epic Employment eventually becoming National Manager for Disability Services. Last week the Councillor Portfolios were decided and I was delighted to be allocated to the Community Portfolio which makes excellent use of my professional background. I’m also very happy to be working alongside Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski in that portfolio. Councillor Baberowski made history by becoming the first hinterland Councillor to be voted in as Deputy Mayor, an encouraging sign for the hinterland. I ran a grass-roots election campaign and I intend to be a grassroots Councillor, remaining available to the residents of Kenilworth and the surrounding area to help with projects, provide advice and be a dependable link between what your community wants and the people who can help you to get it. COVID-19 has thrown a spanner in the works of communication, but as always there are ways round it and our priority right now is staying safe as a community. Unfortunately I can’t set up ‘listening posts’ in every town, as I had planned, at least not just yet anyway. ollowing the declaration of the council election result, councillors were sworn into office on Monday 20 April. On Thursday 23 April, council held a post-election meeting where Cr Rick Baberowski was elected as the Deputy Mayor. The Mayor Mark Jamieson and councillors made speeches which were live streamed on council’s website. The first Ordinary Meeting of council was held on Thursday 30 April at which Cr Christian Dickson and I were appointed to the Service Excellence (Customer Service) Portfolio with overall responsibility for customer service standards, service reviews, monitoring satisfaction levels, development and delivery of annual core capital works programs, development and delivery of council’s Asset Maintenance Program, local law reviews and development assessment services and monitoring. All councillors are undertaking a well-developed program of induction and training which continues each day until the end of May. There is a lot to learn as your council is one of Australia’s largest local authorities with a highly developed and complex business structure. The State Government has devolved a wide range of responsibilities down to Local Government and the significant levels of accountability are complex and in some cases onerous, but necessary. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 laws I have been unable to visit each town and district, which is quite frustrating as I wish to better know my division, its businesses, residents and each area’s special needs. Hopefully with the gradual easing of restrictions I will soon be able to perform this vital and necessary role as part of my normal duties. This council contains a good mix of both experienced and enthusiastic councillors and is well supported by an experienced management team, capably led by Acting CEO Warren Bunker. his morning (Saturday 25 April 2020) I was at my front gates and my thoughts turned to those from the Kenilworth district who served in World War 1 and 2 and those that have served since. As I stood at my gates waiting for the sunrise I thought of Corporal John McKinnon from Kidaman Creek who was killed in World War 1 and of Corporal Robert Perry who died of his wounds in World War 2. Perry Road runs down the front of my property. I was also reminded this morning of the commitment of my fellow members of the Kenilworth RSL Sub branch who have served their country. It is their commitment and the commitment of those whose names are inscribed on the memorial in Kenilworth that is the foundation of the ANZAC Spirit. ympie Regional Council construction crews are busy working on making parts of Amamoor Creek Road safer. The team are removing the existing floodway and culvert before building a new reinforced, concrete floodway. This work is located about 4.5 kilometres from Amamoor township and budgeted at $248,000 thanks to the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS). Gympie Regional Council’s Construction Branch Manager, Darren Cunningham, said this work will benefit Amamoor residents, Mary Valley locals and visitors to region. “It’s no secret that parts of our region are extremely prone to flooding,” Mr Cunningham said. “Work where we can reduce the damage to our infrastructure and increase the safety of the road for our residents and visitors. is obviously beneficial. While we are improving the resilience of this section of road we are also putting in place sediment control and erosion protection for additional safety and environmental protection,” he said. Traffic control is in place for this work and Council is urging motorists to drive to the conditions. Council is aiming to have this project complete by 30 June 2020.

37-year-old male fom Carters Ridge was charged with possession of dangerous drugs, unlawful possession of weapon, possession of property used in connection with a drug offence and obstruct Police. The male was located with over 100 grams of amphetamines, 66 LSD tabs, 66 MDMA tablets and a quantity of Cannabis. The male is next due to appear at the Gympie Magistrates Court on the 22nd of June 2020. A 32-year-old male from Curra has been charged with drink driving with a reading of .10%. the male is due to appear at the Gympie Magistrates Court on the 16th of July 2020. • We have received complaints from members of the public regard trail bikes being used on the Mary Valley Heritage Rail Trail. It is an offence under the Summary Offences Act 2005 to use a motor bike on the trail and Imbil Police are working with Gympie Regional Council to detect and prosecute persons involved. • We have taken a large number of public inquiries regarding Coronavirus and what you can and cannot do with the current restrictions.
