Make sure you mark your calendars for Sunday 19th May 2024. As part of the Mary Valley GourMAY Festival the Kenilworth Arts Council and Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce have come together to put on a FREE family fun day for locals and tourists alike.

Starting from 9am the Kenilworth Showgrounds will turn into a field of fun and possibilities. Get ready for;

Bring a picnic or get food from one of the delicious vendors set up on site.

As part of the day, families are invited to join in with an African drum and song circle with Mary Valley Local Samoko.

Samoko is a cultural ambassador, master musician, performer, choreographer and community development worker from the Luo tribes of Kenya. With a long heritage past in music, dance, cultural presentation and community engagement across all sectors from childcare to corporate and university, Samoko brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in connecting people with positive culture for health and well-being.

The family fun day is part of the larger Kenilworth Artsfest which is running all weekend with a Gala Opening Night on Friday, Exhibitions and Poetry on Saturday and the Great Mary Valley Damper Competition on Sunday.

Have you ever wondered how a classical violinist from Switzerland ended up in Kenilworth?

It all begins with a dream. A dream to travel from Switzerland to India on horseback...

Silvi Eckley grew up in Switzerland, played violin and toured Europe with an orchestra . Teaching was always her biggest passion so the preschool teacher found herself teaching in wonderful places, including in a childrens circus. She spent several years in the Swiss mountains chasing nature adventures.

As things turned out a horse ride to India would stretch even the can do attitude of Silvi a bit too far. So when she heard about the australian bicentennial horsetrail she packed her bag and went to Far north queensland. There she met up with friend and organised everything for the trail, Cooktown to Melbourne. Over 5000km on horseback with packhorses!

Silvi said,

"I budgeted $10’000.00 to buy 2 horses alone. You can imagine my astonishment when my friend opened up the trading post newspaper and I discovered that you can buy a horse in australia for about $500.00. I clearly remember thinking, this is my country, I am in love."

As fate had it, Silvi met another horseriding adventurer on that 1 . 5 year long trip.

After she arrived in Melbourne they got married, (on horseback of course) and rode from Melbourne to Kenilworth in a horsedrawn wagon with their 5 horses. Can you imagine what those horses must have been thinking? You must be kidding? All the way back up to Queensland!

Swiss born Silvi said, "Well Kenilworth was my favourite place on the whole east coast, with its green rolling hills and close enough to the beautiful beaches. No crocodiles to worry about and no snow."

They settled on a beautiful secluded farm and raised a family with 4 children. Music was always part of the journey.

So Silvi ended up combining the two passions of teaching and music and started teaching strings in Noosa. 20 years later Silvi is still teaching at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

But the teaching was not enough so 15 years ago Silvi founded

and presidents the Noosa Orchestra.

She conducts the community group Noosa mini strings, while internationally accomplished conductor Antoni Bonetti conducts the Noosa Orchestra.

It is very rewarding to offer the string students on the northern sunshine coast a opportunity to rehearse and perform together. She loves to provide opportunities for children from all walks of life. Home schoolers, state schoolers, private schoolers, everyone is welcome.

You often see Silvi with her violin in her backpack hiking on adventure trails enjoying the natural acoustics.

For Silvi, the India dream is still alive. She had a trip planned in 2021 for her 50th birthday but as it was ended by covid, resourceful Silvi instead brought India to Kenilworth complete with 6 camels for all her family and friends to ride, as well as a lifesize cardboard elephant!

HISTORICAL: TOP CAF É IN TOWN

HOW DID THE TERM “TOP CAFÉ” COME INTO USAGE IS KENILWORTH?

The “top café” – bottom café” was first used in Kenilworth in the 1930’s.

“The Top Café/Bottom Cafe legend was not going to die!”

Unfortunately, the original “bottom” café was destroyed by fire in 1948 as reported on page 6 of the Nambour Chronicle in the Friday 5 November 1948 edition. At that time the café was owned by Mr and Mrs Feast who had purchased the business in 1947 from Mr and Mrs Partridge.

Kenilworth news published in the Nambour Chronicle (7.10.1932) described the building activities in the townshipa new, modern store for Mr A.E. Tanner (now the Friendly Grocer) and a café for Mr Scargill which was built on the corner of Charles and Elizabeth Street. There was also a private residence for Mr B. Liekefett and addition to the hall which had been moved from the current Police Station site to its present position.

In 1936 the Kenilworth News report in the Nambour Chronicle (13.3.1936, page 5) stated:- Many new buildings are being erected in the Kenilworth township. Mr J Scargill is having constructed a new café (on the site Mrs Rodgers bush house); and Messrs Sims brothers are erecting a new residence for Mr Roberts who recently purchased their carrying business. The construction of the second café led to the use of Top Café / Bottom Café (from top of the hill/bottom of the hill position of the buildings) by the local population.

The English, Scottish and Australian Bank established an agency of Imbil branch at Kenilworth in October, 1926 in Arthur Tanners general store (now Kenilworth Country Bakery). The agency moved up the hill in 1932 when Mr Tanner built his new store and

then across the road into the original “Top Cafe” building (now the post office).

The Top Café/Bottom Cafe legend was not going to die!

A Nambour Chronicle article (8.11.1935) listed a number of new houses being erected including one for Mr C. Cole which was used as flats originally with the car parking in the area that is now the customer space in the Top Café. Mr and Mrs Gould ran the Café in 1935 (personal history from Claire Munt). Many owners have called the café home since that time. Mrs Tirrell named the enterprise the Golden Glow café in the 1950’s. It became the top café when “The Blue Bird Café” opened in the early 1950’s and was dubbed the bottom café by locals. Mr Nelson Paulger and his wife Florrie and family lived and worked the business for some years. (where La Petite Maison is now).

Time has moved on for Kenilworth - but in this year of “century celebrations” – the hall (built 1924), the school (established in the hall in October 1924) and the bakery building which opened as the first commercial premises in the township on January 2, 1924 – we can appreciate older traditions of which Top Cafe and Bottom Café is but one.

CHEERIO FROM THE CHURCHES

It was lovely to see some sunshine over Easter! There were good attendances at church services at church services at St Luke’s on Good Friday and Easter Day and also at St John Bosco’s.

An ecumenical service was held at St John Bosco’s on Palm Sunday followed by morning tea across the road at St Luke’s.

On Thursday mornings, there is a short Morning Prayer at St Luke’s at 9am and Meditation at 9:30am at St John Bosco’s. St Luke’s church times for Sundays, Christmas Day, Easter Day and St Luke’s Patronal service are now all at 9am. ~ Cheerio from the churches

Our AGM was held 25 November 2023. Congratulations to our newly elected 2024 Committee:

President Jodi King, Vice President Aaron Trigg, Chief Instructor Peta Trigg, Secretary Sonia Law, Assistant Secretary Caitlin Maunder and Treasurer Paula Gillis.

Pony club aims to educate and entertain with Horsemastership being as important as Horsemanship, and that no matter what level of riding ability, we welcome everyone. Our first muster was held on March 10 at Sanden Equestrian, with the focus being on grids and showjumping. Kenilworth Pony Club is always looking to welcome new members. March saw members busy competing all over the Sunshine Coast in a range of disciplines. On March 17, Alice Gillis made her way to Northcoast Active Riders Group to compete in the Novice dressage. Alice rode two lovely tests on Serenity coming home 1st overall in a very competitive filed. March 24,

Billie Maden and Asha Gosling, competed at Nambour Showjumping. Billie received 1st overall showjumping on her horse Boom. Asha came 3rd overall on her horse Ash. Congratulations to all members on your great results.

100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

GLIMPSE INTO OUR PAST. DID YOU KNOW ...

The first school in town was known as Kenilworth Township Provisional School and it was situated in the original town hall, located where the police station currently is. As with all provisional schools in those days, the Department of Public Instruction gave approval for the school on condition that a suitable building be provided at no cost to the department. The hall was built to be used as a school and to provide the community with a place for entertainment and amenities to serve a growing population.

The school began operating on 21 st October in 1924. The first teacher was Elsie Ginn who commenced in 1924 and left on 5th August 1927. Source: Kenilworth State School 75 th Anniversary Book.

WEED MANAGEMENT

Let’s talk about the Asparagus that you don’t want in your garden! Unlike their popular relative, the edible asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), these asparagus species are not ones you want growing in your garden! There are a few problem asparagus ferns, which include basket asparagus (Asparagus aethiopicus and Asparagus scandens), climbing asparagus fern (Asparagus africanus and Asparagus plumosus), bridal creeper (Asparagus asparagoides) and sicklethorn (Asparagus falcatus).

Some of these were once very popular garden ornamentals and have been spread by birds and dumped garden waste in bushlands, which has created significant damage to the Sunshine Coast’s unique ecosystems. Areas once covered with a variety of flowering native plants such as the coastal banksias are now a carpet of basket asparagus fern. These asparagus types are a high priority for management under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and the Sunshine Coast Council Local Government

Now is the time to apply for a grant to help fund the vital work you do to care for our wildlife and natural environment. Applications for the Environment Levy Partnership Funding Program open on April 15. Successful groups will receive a share of more than $630,000 each year for the next three years, subject to conditions. Seniors Forum: My 2024 Seniors Forum at Nambour RSL was a great success thanks to expert speakers from Blackall Range Care Group, CAPA Services, Stream Financial and Easton Lawyers. Our presenters’ top tips for accessing services were:

1. Apply for My Aged Care when you are eligible: it is better to have the funding and not need it, than need the funding and not have it;

2. Ask for advice from Centrelink about eligibility for assistance: you don't know what you don't know;

3. Be across your finances: know incomings and outgoings and get advice on how to structure your affairs to maximise government support;

4. Don’t DIY law, get legal advice on drafting your will and related matters.

Labor's Promise is Now a Lie: Labor’s promise of a $275 reduction in household power bills is now a lie. Whenever I’ve criticised Labor for breaking its election promise to reduce household power bills by $275 on 2021/22 levels, the Minister has cried foul and insisted his promise would be delivered by the year 2025.

Last week, the draft Default Market Offer was released which indicates changes to electricity prices for 2025. So, it’s now official - Labor’s $275 promise is dead.

Q - Guess how much Labor fell short of its promise?

A – By up to $1,027.

Remarkably, despite this revelation, the Minister still refused to concede that his $275 election promise could not be delivered. Thus, his broken promise has morphed into a deliberate lie.

Talking Industrial Relations: It was great hosting my Shadow Minister colleague, Senator Michaelia Cash, on the Sunshine Coast recently and meeting with some terrific local businesses to discuss Labor’s industrial relations agenda and the Coalition’s plans.

The long-standing and much-loved Maleny Wood Expo is set to captivate attendees this coming Labour Day Long weekend, with a diverse array of workshops, entertainment, and exhibitors, promising an unforgettable experience for all ages. Community Wild Dog Baiting Program Autumn 2024

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community-based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Wild dogs cost Australia’s agricultural sector $89 million per year. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna including koalas. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control restricted species on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Obi Obi, Peachester, Reesville and Witta areas from 8-31 May, 2024.

KENILWORTH BOWLS CLUB NEWS

The weather gods were with our club for our 2 day Easter Carnival with players from the Coast, Gympie and as far away as Woodgate and Darling Downs. A great weekend was had by all. We must thank our major sponsor – Your Local Community Bank, Cooroy Branch of Bendigo Bank, for their most generous financial support once again this year. Thanks must go also to the generosity of our Patron Nigel (Scotty and Jan) Scott and Kay Miles for raffle prizes.

The winners of our Open Fours Competition played on Easter Saturday was a local team made up of Tony Engle, Tracey Ferriday, Brad Parker and John Ferriday. Well done!

On Easter Sunday, a team from club Nambour took home the money in the Mens Fours Competition.

This has been a successful Annual Event for many years. We thank all players and members who contributed to its success.

On Anzac Day, in conjunction with your local Kenilworth RSL sub-branch, we invite you to help us honour our fallen and returned veterans by joining us at the club following the morning Anzac parade and service. The club opens for lunch at 11.00 with the bar opening at 12noon followed by a social game of bowls and the traditional game of two-up (with proceeds going to Legacy).

The Joker Jackpot did not go off last month so it is building again. Come along on Friday evenings

for a chance to be the winner.

1/2 CUP ROLLED OATS

1/2 CUP + 2TBLESPNS GROUND ALMONDS (Almond meal/flour)

4 MEDJOOL DATES OR EQUIVALENT IN PKT PITTED DATES

1 TBLESPN COCONUT OIL

Place coconut. oats & almond meal in food processor & pulse until fine dry texture. Add dates, oil & pulp & whizz to combine, until it comes to a ball. Roll tesaspoons into balls & refrigerate/freeze. Store in fridge. Makes approx 20. This recipe is a great Healthy Snack - so Quick & Easy.

MARY RIVER COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS BBQ

On Sunday 17th March more than 30 local community members plus a bunch of children and a few four-legged-friends came together at the Kenilworth park to connect, chat and share a meal. It is that easy to promote positive mental health in our community. Time and space to BE together. To know that whatever we are going through we are not alone. About 3,000 Australians end their lives each year – about 8 people a day. Suicide is the third leading cause of premature death from injury or disease, and the main cause of death among people aged 15 to 49. We lose more people to suicide than die on our roads each year (health.gov.au).
