CHECK OUT THE CLASSIC CAR SHOW!

CLASSIC CAR SHOW SUNDAY 25 AUGUST 2024

Kenilworth now has another annual event that promotes our region by attracting a unique crowd of car enthusiasts. Most importantly, we have the community working together on a joint project, talking positively about the community, and achieving results for the whole town, which has been the chamber's intent.

Our aims are to:

• Promote Kenilworth, especially local businesses.

• Obtain gold coin donations for our SES and Kenilworth Community College.

• Promote our Chamber to increase interest and membership.

• Encourage our small community in working together.

"Classic Cars, a LIVE Rock band, dancing, jumping castle... come along for a fun day out!"

At the Classic Car Show in 2023 we had over 200 car entries, a 40% increase from 2022, raised $3000.00 for our local SES and funds for Kenilworth Community College. There were over 3000 people through the gates, mostly tourists, the local Hotel served 280 meals, with other businesses showing big increases in revenue.

We have helped boost tourism and are no longer a small country town, practically unknown, but a destiny hosting major events such as a Music Festival, Kenilworth Chook Chase together with our annual

Rodeo attracting thousands of visitors into our town each year. This together with numerous other smaller functions such as the Kenilworth Arts Council Exhibition, including a Family Fun Day and Kenilworth Community Christmas Eve Party, a favourite for families and children of the region.

WHAT TO EXPECT

An all ages, fun day out for anyone interested in the beauty and allure of classic cars!

Come and listen to the live rock band and get groovy on the dance floor. The Blues Brothers act is back, which was extremely successful last year,.

Children are welcome, there will be a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, all free.

Feeling hungry or like shopping? There are a number of food stalls and markets where the public can browse.

This year there will also be an announcer with a roving microphone who will interview car entrants & the public. Learn about the people behind the sparkling classic cars. You can even sit inside them and take some photos!

All public get to vote and there will be trophy presentations. Join us for a fun and relaxed day.

MALENY SHOW PRIZE WINNER – TWO FIRST AND TWO SECOND PRIZES

Conondale prize winner Allan Noon moved to Conondale in 2021. His childhood was spent in Brisbane where his family finally settled in Carina Heights and where Allan lived for 54 years.

As a child Allan, being the eldest of five children, was expected to help out at home. To Allan`s delight his mother Margaret taught him the basics of sewing so he could assist her with mending using the old treadle Singer sewing machine. It was during these early days that Allan`s interest in costumes and fashion was first ignited through his love of watching old movies on the television and seeing all the beautifully designed costumes.

Allan soon started to dabble in making clothing for his younger sister and buying hats from op shops that he creatively transformed into vintage hats. His love of design and creative costume making has continued to be his hobby since those early days.

“When I moved to Conondale my creative ideas suddenly magnified. The environment, and the craft shops and art galleries in the Hinterland, have inspired me. This year I thought I would enter some of my creations

FUTURE RAINFOREST: ‘NEW KIND OF PARK’ CLAIMS AWARDS

The Sunshine Coast Ecological Park master plan is setting new standards for excellence in design for our environment and community.

The transformational project has taken out multiple awards as early works start to revegetate the site to provide the ultimate refuge for people and nature.

The master plan, endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council in 2023, set down a vision for a “new kind of park” delivering naturebased recreation, education and research.

The project aims to protect, celebrate and restore the 65ha site adjoining Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve at Maleny on Jinibara Country, returning the current cleared pasture land to its original ecosystems, alongside places for our community to gather and immerse in nature and local cultural heritage.

When complete, more than 70 per cent of the site will be revegetated.

Master plan highlights for our community include walking trails, wetlands, a forest lookout tower, treetop boardwalks, events space, a community hub with café and facilities for research and operations.

in the Maleny Show and to my surprise I won two firsts and two second prizes! This has inspired me to be even more creative”

Allan does not make professional clothing, costumes and hats although, over the years, he has sold some of his fabulous hats. Allan sometimes attends Conondale`s Crafty Cackling Crones monthly gatherings and also loves the Community Cuppa mornings where all sorts of community connections are made.

WHY IS THIS BRIDGE SO NAMED?

"In August 1912 at the age of 15 he established his own business as a builder and contractor"

In 1893 the three Hornibrook brothers (Michael, John, and James) settled on the Obi Obi branch of the Mary River where Michael had selected a block of land. Later on John selected and James in 1896 (Hinka Booma to Kenilworth, 1950, 2005, 2020). They surveyed the road to Mapleton and built the first school house in the valley. John, his wife Catherine and his family returned to Brisbane in 1903 where he set up as a tea merchant but died later that year of typhoid fever. Their second child Emanuel was educated at Nambour, Obi Obi, Bowen Bridge and South Brisbane state schools. A 'big lump of a lad' at the age of 13, he was apprenticed to H. W. Fooks, Adelaide Street, to learn the building and joinery trade. In August 1912 at the age of 15 he established his own business as a builder and contractor; his brother Reg joined him in the following year. On 27 November 1915 Manuel Hornibrook married with Methodist forms Daphne Winifred Brunckhorst at her parents' Enoggera home.

1921 and Gus in 1948. The company began carrying out drainage schemes in Brisbane suburbs for local councils in 1918, and then contracted for large sewerage works at Longreach, Roma and other towns in western Queensland. In 1922 the firm excavated the State's first open-cut coalmine at Blair Athol, and constructed water-supply systems for Goondiwindi, Mackay and Rockhampton.

The Hornibrook Highway—a toll road which he launched as a private venture during the Depression—included what was Australia's longest bridge at the time of its construction, and provided full-time employment for hundreds of men. The group built more than one hundred bridges, some of the betterknown including the William Jolly, Story and New Victoria bridges in Brisbane, the Northbridge and Iron Cove. Bridge, Sydney, the King's Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue bridges in Canberra, and the Markham River Bridge in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Between John and his brother James they had 11 sons and one daughter, perfect for their own team cricket practice and a ‘twelfth man.’ One of James’s sons, Percy, went on to play cricket for Australia when they won the Ashes in London in 1930, with Don Bradman.

From the outset Hornibrook showed the drive and initiative that were to characterize his career, though his business was, from the first, very much a family affair. Four other brothers joined

It was, however, as a bridge-builder that Hornibrook made his reputation. His first sizeable bridge, erected for the Department of Main Roads across the Burrum River in 1925, was the earliest, publicly funded, reinforced-concrete bridge in Queensland.

CHEERIO FROM THE CHURCHES

Sunday services continue to be held at St Luke’s Anglican Church and St John Bosco’s Catholic Church in Kenilworth. These two churches stand across the road from each other, one on one corner of Philip and Anne Streets and one on the opposite corner. It’s really only the width of Philip Street that separates these two church communities. The two churches have worked closely over many years to help and support each other and their church communities.

St Luke’s and St John Bosco’s are a wonderful example of understanding and co-operation in living out the Christian gospel.

Into this mix, add in the local folk from the Uniting Church and the Lutheran Church who do not have their own church buildings in Kenilworth. This co-operative spirit was very clear in the Ecumenical Service held on Sunday 30 June. It was led by the Uniting Church in the Catholic Church with a sermon by Rev’d Bruce Johnson with the morning tea at the Anglican Church Community Hub.

On Saturday 10 August, St Luke’s invites you to an amazing display of hats! Yes, hats and a bit of fascinating history! There will also be some musical items and afternoon tea. Admission is $5 with a Lucky Door prize and a raffle. Mark it in your diary – Saturday 10 August at 2pm at St Luke’s, Philip Street.

ARTS & CREATIVITY

MARY VALLEY ARTS FESTIVAL

The Sunshine Coast - and particularly its hinterland - has more artists per capita than any other region in Australia. That’s according to former gallery director Tony Gill, who will join fellow curator Kevin Wilson as judges of the 2024 Mary Valley Art Festival in Imbil next month. Mr Gill and his partner Jane Caraffi were directors of Art on Cairncross, a commercial gallery on the outskirts of Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Tony has been involved with the Sunshine Coast art sector for more than 26 years and started developing art gallery trails early in his business life. While he and Jane have retired from their gallery, they still play an active role in the visual arts scene on the Sunshine Coast; Tony was one of the founders of the now prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

He will be tasked with judging the popular Mary Valley Art Festival entries with Kevin Wilson, coordinator of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Kevin is an experienced curator, gallery director, and practising artist and is known for breaking new ground with events and programs that respond to audience interests and broad community direction. He started the Postcard show in St Kilda, Melbourne 25 years ago, an exhibition that continues to thrive today, as well as the Floating Land art and environment project in Noosa. He has been a curator at QUT Art Museum, the State Library and at artisan in Brisbane. As well, he has developed new facilities including the Linden Art Centre in Victoria and the Albury Library Museum in New South Wales.

Organiser of the Mary Valley Art Festival, Heinke Butt said artists had until July 8 to get their entries in for the competition which offers $11,500 in prizes, including the RJR Property Best in Show award for $3000, and $1500 for the Open winner from Gympie’s Bendigo Bank. There are 10 sections in the show being held at the Imbil Public Hall, Imbil from July 25-28.

Tickets are available now on Eventbrite for the gala awards presentation on Friday July 26 from 6pm. The weekend includes a poets’ breakfast on Saturday July 27 from 8am, followed by the Masondale People’s Choice Awards at 3pm.

Fire ants have been detected in our region and you can help stop the spread of these aggressive pests that have a painful sting. Look for mounds or loose patches of soil with no clear holes. Budget delivery: Council handed down its Budget for 2024-25 on June 20, which will deliver a wide variety of important works across Division 5. One of my top priorities is to keep our hinterland residents and farmers connected on our country roads, as well as make them accessible for our many visitors. Increasing investment to seal gravel roads has been high on my agenda and I’m pleased to advise that this year we are allocating $8 million across the region, up from $5 million.

Placemaking projects are an important part of enhancing those aspects our residents already love about their picturesque townships. Substantial investments will be made this year to finish key Division 5 projects, including an allocation of $2.9 million for the Maple Street streetscape at Maleny. There’s also $960,000 to complete Maleny’s Mountain View lookout parking area. Head to Council’s website for a full list of Division 5 budget wins.

Rangebow festival: I had the privilege to launch the Rangebow festival program in Montville recently. Proudly supported by Council through the Major Events Sponsorship Program’s Emerging Events category, we hope that our three-year funding package will provide financial certainty for the organisers. The festival is a great opportunity to promote community inclusiveness, diversity, reconciliation and sustainability. These core values have guided the event programming and some of the best things on offer are FREE and family friendly. Running from 1 to 4 August across the hinterland, you’ll find the full program at therangebowfestival.org.

Outdoor work experience program for high school students: Join Council’s Parks and Gardens team for a five-day senior high school work experience program, to obtain onthe-job skills across six fields, including horticulture, irrigation, nursery, administration, infrastructure and maintenance. Did you know? We are creating a SAFE SPACE in the Mary Valley. The working group conversations, connections and training have been continuing this year for a committed group of locals with the national organisation Roses in the Ocean.

You are very welcome to join us!

Mental health and suicide is something that touches many lives and we are creating a safe space in Kenilworth for anyone in the surrounding areas feeling distress. It is a safe space to connect and receive support in a non-clinical setting. Visitors are 'guests' not patients, volunteers have lived experience in mental health or suicide.

Come along to our fundraiser movie, 20th July at the museum. Tickets are suggested $20 but whatever you feel to contribute is welcome. Leave a gold coin donation or pay it forward for someone else. We hope to see you there!
