HISTORICAL: 100 YEARS AGO
WHAT HAPPENED IN KENILWORTH DISTRICT IN 1924?
Arthur Tanner’s General Store opened for business on January 2, 1924. (Winnie Graces Writings from 1924)
The Kenilworth Township Provisional School began in the Kenilworth Hall on October 21, 1924
It was announced in the Brisbane Courier (11.1.,1924, page 8) that the state government proposed to divide the shire of Maroochy into five divisions by cutting division1 into 2 and alter the shire boundaries of the shires Maroochy and Widgee by including in Widgee the parish of Cambroon and parts of the parishes of Kenilworth and Maleny.
Tenders were called for the erection of a public hall in the Kenilworth township (Daily Mail (1.2.1924, page 13). The newspaper article also reported that all the timber for the hall had been donated and that Mr T. Walker has given his land (where the Police Station now stands). The building to be utilised as a schoolhouse. It is understood that the Department has promised the services of a teacher upon completion of the building, A new State School is also being built at Cambroon.
In April of 1924 Miss E. McGinn married Mr. A. Loweke in Gympie as reported in the Daily Mail (1.5.1924, page 10). In the same article it was reported that the cricketers ball was a great success
with net proceeds of eleven pounds ($22). Soccer and Rugby teams were participating in the Mary Valley fixtures. A petition was circulating with a view to having the telephone line now being erected, extended through Kenilworth to Mt. Ubi. Daily Mail (13.5.1924, page 11) reported on the visit of St Andrew’s Women’s Hockey Club visit. The outcome of two games played Kenilworth 4 goals St Andrews
2 goals. Kenilworth goals were scored by L. Sims (2), D. Sherwell and D. Murtagh. Hockey ball at night was well attended.
In September of 1924 the Belli Telephone exchange opened in the residence of Mr. A Richardson (Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, 26.9.1924, page 4). The telephone exchange at Gheerulla opened in the residence of Mr. R.L.Sims on Monday 10 November, 1924, (Nambour Chronicle 14.11,1924, page 9). The same article also reported that Mr. R McFadden, Gympie was putting the finishing touches to the township hall. A screen has been erected and painted. An entertainment will be given on its completion. It was also reported that Mr A.E. Tanner has purchased allotments adjoining his shop. He intends to erect a residence. Winnie Graces Writing from 1924 informs that the land upon which the residence was built was her wedding present from her parents Richard and Hannah Sims.
The Kenilworth Township Provisional School began in the Kenilworth Hall on October 21, 1924 with an attendance of 21 under the watchful eye of Miss E. Ginn who had transferred from Goondiwindi.

GLIMPSE INTO OUR PAST. DID YOU KNOW ……
W.E. Sims commenced the first school bus service to transport children from the Walli Creek area to the Kenilworth State School at the beginning of the 1949 school year. At that time twentythree children benefited from the service. Previously children had ridden to school or relied on private motor transport. Source: Sunshine Coast Council Libraries website.
As part of our upcoming Kenilworth State Community College Centenary celebrations in October, the committee has prioritised the compilation of an anniversary book. Recording our town and school history, with photos, enrolment lists, information and personal recounts of school and life is an important legacy that we want to leave for our future, current and past generations. A large collection of photos from the mid 1960’s is stored at school in the library. We have no photographs or resources prior to that time, meaning that forty years of school history is no longer available as a vital source for our book.
If you were a student, parent or staff member in those earlier school days please help us! We would love to meet with you, record stories, share memories and most importantly use any photos and resources that you may have with our community in the compilation of the anniversary book. Paper items up to A3 size can be carefully scanned at school and returned to you immediately. If you have any items, memories or stories to share, please contact us during school hours by leaving a message at the office for Kellie Scott or Theresa Lyndon. We’re really looking forward to making contact with you!
The Centenary Committee has changed the date of the school centenary celebration to Saturday 19 th October 2024.
This will allow past students, staff and families time to travel and enjoy the celebrations, then make their way home safely afterwards. Our next centenary committee meeting is on Wednesday 5 th June at 5pm in the school library – everyone welcome.

SOUND OF SINGING IN THE VALLEY
DO YOU LOVE TO SING?
Have you ever thought of joining a choir? A new fun choir is starting up in Belli Park run by Gen Douw and her 22 year old daughter Emma.
“Singing in harmony feels amazing,” says Gen, who has been running Cooran Choir for the last 4 years. “I believe it is powerful for your health and well-being and when people come together to sing, it can be extremely therapeutic and healing as well as really fun, uplifting and exhilarating!
There is really no reason why everyone shouldn't sing.”
Emma loved being in her school choir and has missed singing since leaving school. “I wanted to keep singing but many of the local community choirs are mainly comprised of older people and I wanted to sing with some younger people as well, so I asked Mum if she would start a new choir that I could invite my friends to!”
Whether you are an experienced singer or a shower singer, this choir is for you! You will find our sessions fun and inclusive - prepare to be welcomed, encouraged and just a tiny bit silly!
Belli Park Choir will practice at the Belli Hall every Thursday 6pm-7.30pm.
Come along and give it a go! Here's what a few choir members have said:
“Since attending I have noticed an increase in my general confidence...”
“I am loving singing with your choir..I LOVE your playful open hearted approach. Am so glad I got the push to come along.”
“Love your welcoming personality & teaching style”
“You bring out the magic in everyone. You make me feel safe, and free to stretch and use my voice.”

MRCCC COMMUNITY NOTICE
The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee has strong links with the upper Mary River community; working together with landholders to protect and improve waterway biodiversity, stability and water quality and assist with grazing land management. Many changes have been witnessed by locals over the past 10 years, particularly the large-scale river bank civil protection projects and the riparian fencing that extends continuously for over 7 kilometres along the Kenilworth river reach and that maintains a stock-free river. Other landholders have accessed funding through the Council Environment Levy grants to carry out projects of environmental weed control and revegetation, or have contributed to water quality monitoring, frog searching, turtle nest protection, Mary River cod fingerling releases, weed and feral alerts.
We at the MRCCC extend our acknowledgement of, and gratitude to, all that have actively participated to help the Mary River and its tributaries to recover from long-term degradation. For those
that would like to talk with a MRCCC staff member, will be in the Kenilworth Information Centre back office on the following days:

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month: May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Domestic violence is a scourge against society which we must be resolute in tackling. I will support any good public policy which stops domestic violence and/or supports victim-survivors. Over recent weeks, I have met with some extraordinary community organisations working in this area and was able to thank them for the work they do.
Personal Income Tax Growing Fast: The OECD’s Taxing Wages 2024 report found Australia’s personal income tax burden grew faster than any other advanced economy last year. Hardworking Australians are being smashed by higher prices, higher mortgage repayments and higher taxes as a result of Labor’s economic mismanagement.
Bonza Shutdown: Employees of Bonza have learnt they will not be paid a month’s wages after its fleet of aircraft was grounded and the business went into voluntary administration. If anyone is affected by the Bonza shutdown and needs assistance, reach out to my office at ted.obrien.mp@aph.gov.au or on (07) 5479 2800.
Labor Concedes Gas Needed: It’s taken almost two years, but Labor’s energy minister has finally conceded we need gas. Yet, Labor doesn’t have any ideas, let alone policies, to bring more gas to market. A good starting point would be to fix the broken approvals process and stop funding green lawfare through the Environmental Defenders Office.

Community-led Safe Space: I attended a Community-led Space Spaces community consultation process in Kenilworth on Saturday 11 May. It was humbling, and brought together in a safe place community members with a personal lived experience of suicide. It helped to identify the needs and gaps in our community and will form part of the planning and establishment phase for the Community-led Safe Space which will be opening later this year in the Kenilworth area. It was a good way to hear from other local people and how they feel about the project.
Kenilworth ArtsFest: I’m looking forward to attending the Kenilworth ArtsFest gala opening night on Friday night. Kenilworth ArtsFest runs 17-19 May, presented by the Kenilworth Arts Council. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor
On 25 April, our community gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day at a service led by the Kenilworth RSL Sub-branch. While it was a pity that there were problems with the PA system, the service was still a moving reminder of the meaning of ANZAC. So, well done, RSL, under difficult circumstances.
Congratulations to all those presented with special certificates and medals to acknowledge their service contributions. Recognition well deserved!
Congratulations, too, the students and staff of Kenilworth Community College for their respectful attendance and to the two students who read the First and Second Resolutions.
I was a bit disappointed that the community wreath laying wasn’t included this year. This was a beautiful and respectful way for community organisations to play a part in the ANZAC service. In previous years, many people remarked on the beauty of the lovingly made wreaths.
Let’s hope the community wreath laying can be re-instated next year.
Sincerely,
Shirley Moreland OAMPOEM SPRING AND NATURE’S CHALLENGE
ByTom Stodulka 9 November 2023
Time for a poem,
Time for a song.
What has taken you so long.
It’s still spring.
With its cool and sometimes hot days.
Beauty in nature.
All around.
And sometimes not a sound.
With the jacarandas, poincianas and bougainvillea’s, Not long after the silky oak grevilleas.
There’s even some rain,
Just for the farmers,
Something so great to gain.
Though paradox and contradiction, Such an aussie affliction.
Fires have again raged.
Too much land again savaged. Only last year,
The floods causing more than a tear.
Resilience and hope.
There’s never enough, Thank God, we are made of sterner stuff.

I am an avid gardener, sewer and quilter and enjoy supporting and engaging in local events that support and encourage my passions and interests. In the Month ahead we have several events promoting our local talents. Local events put Kenilworth on the map and in return provide greatly to the local economy so I encourage you all to support and attend. Firstly we have the Kenilworth Artfest showcasing so much diversity in skills & formats.
Early June we have the Craft & Quilt Show held over two days showcasing our local ladies group projects. They have created a wonderful Quilt for Raffle to be drawn at the event. If you have any free time spare please consider assisting with the setting up & dismantling, as it is an enormous job and yes we are all getting older. Throughout May we have the Mary Valley Gourmet Festival celebrating food through growers, producers & creators. I am personally attending the French Feast of Film & Food in Kandanga combining a three course meal with Movie. Don’t forget the Family Day sponsored by Kenilworth Chamber Commerce, a great day for families. So much on people so enjoy and support this wonderful region.

BY THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY
In a world where mental health struggles often linger in silence, finding avenues for expression and understanding is vital. Suzie and Yanni from our Mary River Community Connections embarked on such a journey through the Roses In The Ocean Voices of Insight suicide lived experience story writing workshop, a two-day immersion that profoundly reshaped their perspectives. The workshop, curated to foster empathy and insight, provided a safe space for participants to explore the complexities of the lived experience of suicide through storytelling. Led by seasoned facilitators from Roses in The Ocean, it aimed not only to educate but also to empower attendees to become advocates for mental health awareness and intervention. For Suzie and Yanni, the experience was nothing short of lifeaffirming. From the outset, they were immersed in a supportive environment, surrounded by individuals who shared their passion for promoting mental wellness. Through interactive exercises and poignant discussions, they delved into the intricacies of suicide, grappling with the stigma and misconceptions that often shroud the topic. One of the workshop's highlights was the opportunity to craft their own narratives, drawing from their own experiences and insights gained throughout the workshop, Suzie and Yanni poured their hearts into stories that captured the essence of compassion, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity. These narratives served not only as cathartic outlets but also as powerful tools for raising awareness and fostering understanding. As the workshop unfolded, Suzie and Yanni found themselves deeply moved by the stories shared by fellow participants. Each narrative offered a unique perspective on the complexities of suicide, illuminating the diverse ways in which we all experience suicide. From simple acts of kindness to courageous interventions, these stories served as poignant reminders of the profound impact that compassion can have on those struggling with mental health challenges. Beyond the storytelling aspect, Voices of Insight also equipped Suzie and Yanni with practical skills for identifying and supporting individuals at risk of suicide. As the workshop drew to a close, Suzie and Yanni left with hearts full and perspectives forever changed. They are advocates for mental health awareness now armed with newfound knowledge, empathy, and a sense of purpose, they embarked on a journey to promote understanding, destigmatise mental illness, and foster a culture of compassion and support. The Voices of Insight workshop had left an indelible mark on Suzie and Yanni, reminding them of the power of storytelling, empathy, and human connection in the fight against suicide. It was a transformative experience that reaffirmed their belief in the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for positive change, inspiring them to continue their advocacy journey with renewed passion and purpose.
