KENILWORTH KENILWORTH FIRST RESPONDERS TRAINING

O

n Saturday 3 May QAS had their annual training day for First Responders at Kenilworth. Kenilworth, Kilkivan and Imbil First Responders came together to renew their skills and learn new ones. Also attending were the Fire and Rescue team.

QAS had a team of eight paramedics taking us through various scenarios, involving resuscitation, trauma management and CPR. Another scenario involved a motor vehicle extraction, a crash scene which involved two cars. The Fire and Rescue team arrived on the scene while we assessed and stabilised our patients. At the same time our QAS paramedics were advising us on the right procedures to follow.

Working conjointly with the Fire and Rescue team, it made us realise how complex their job was as they kept the responders and patients safe under difficult circumstances. It demonstrated the mutual respect the emergency teams had for one another.

A huge thank you to all our kitchen staff volunteers - Irene, Hayley, Ewen, Merle and Jo, who helped us on the day feeding about fifty people. See related photos on page 10.

FUNDRAISER SUCCESS

he Kenilworth Bowls Club held a charity afternoon on Anzac Day raising much needed funds for Legacy.

It was great to see such a good roll up for barefoot bowls. The Club donated all funds from green fees, multidraw raffle and two-up to Sunshine Coast Legacy. The total amount raised was $851. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along to make the afternoon such a great success.

he ANZAC Day ceremony at Kenilworth this year followed the usual early breakfast and march to the Cenotaph. Our guest speaker this year was Lenore Meldrum. In honour of Indigenous and Torres Strait servicemen and women, Lisa and Nikiesha were also guest speakers. A very confident young student (Year 6) read the Third Resolution. It is very pleasing to see the number of young people who come each year to show their respect for those to whom they and all of us owe so much.

This year the RSL held a street stall on Easter Saturday which was sold out except for three bottles of jam. Thank you to all who patronised the stall and to those who donated the cakes, biscuits and jams. This success has inspired us to consider another stall next year.

In October 1929 a working committee of 15 was elected with district sporting clubs represented by:- Tennis Clubs - W. Sharry; Football - J. Honeybun; Cricket - E. Houston jnr; Football - R. Hassall and Hall committee members A.P. Myers, E. Houston, W. Sharry, H. Fritz, W. Purdon, H.F. Hassall, H. Rowe, W. Sims, F. Rodgers, A.E. Tanner, R. Hassall and W. Engles with the power to add from the following Messrs J. McGinn, R.L. Sims, D. Beattie, G.B. Sutton, G. Hassall, F. Goeths, A. Burley, A.A. McGinn, C. Cole, H. Sims, D. Sims, E. Nicholls, J. Pearce and R. Beausang.

Improvements were made to the grounds by the volunteer committee over the next decade – fencing was completed in February, 1930 and building of new public toilets in June 1931.

On March 25, 1927 a report on page 4 of the Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser stated:- “A deputation, consisting of Messrs. R. Beattie, sen., J. McGinn, G.B. Sutton and E. Nicholls waited on Mr. Dunstan, M.L.A. at Gympie on Saturday 19th instant to request the Government make a grant of land for recreation purposes at Upper Kenilworth. The Minister did not hold out much hope for the deputation’s request being acceded to, but promised to make inquiries into the matter.”

Records held by the Historical Association show that the request may have failed because the minutes of a meeting, chaired by Mr. A.P. Myers, held on May 12, 1928 moved that:- “A committee be formed to manage the business in connection with purchasing Recreation Ground comprising the following G.B. Sutton, A.E. Tanner, W. Sims, C. Cole, G. Hassall, A.P. Myers, H. Rowe.”

ntil September 1921 when a newspaper article mentioned “Kenilworth” it referred to the locality now known as Gheerulla. The first Kenilworth School, the Kenilworth Farmer’s Association and the Kenilworth Farmer’s Assembly Hall were all in this area. When the township of Kenilworth was subdivided in 1921 – the School was named the Kenilworth Township Provisional School in 1924 and the community hall was referred to as “the Upper Hall”. In 1928 the Department of Public Instruction decreed that the Township school should be known as Kenilworth School and the original Kenilworth School became Kenilworth Lower School – it has never been known by the name Gheerulla School.

MARY VALLEY Saddle Up! Another great horse event coming to Imbil

T

he Sunshine Coast Area Trail and Endurance Riders (SCATER) will be back at the Imbil Showgrounds for another Competitive Trail Ride (CTR) on the weekend of 31 May and 1 June.

The main action will take place on Sunday, starting at about 8.30am. Riders will be completing a series of judgepoints (challenges for riders and horses) at the showgrounds before heading off on a trail ride.

If you’re in the area and have a horse (that you feel confident taking out on trail), we’d love to welcome you as a participant in the event. If you are just interested in seeing what it’s all about, why not pop in, relax in the stands and enjoy the entertainment.

am not sure of any recorded time frame that Noah, from the Bible, took to construct his ark to survive the 40 days and 40 nights of rain. I do however know it has taken one hell of a mission to construct the “Teenager Pad” at Obi. Residing in a four bedroom residence with four children in tow, it was inevitable that “sharing” bedroom space became the order of the household. All well and good until individual personalities started to evolve and ultimate household sanity became seriously challenged.

Conceptualisation solutions were thrown around.

Extension ideas discussed – going up, going out, adding a pod or building a shed. Whilst each idea was feasible and achievable they all navigated a path of spending considerable dollars.

A friend of mine had mentioned about the success of a “Teenager” Caravan at her house. So with plan in fruition, we discussed the option with our eldest daughter and without the blink of an eye, she jumped at the opportunity.

As caring parents we certainly ensured and stressed in communication negotiations that at no point, were we wishing to “kick her out”. Let it be here with stated in print that she is the most fabulous teenager daughter and an extremely highly valued member of our family.

After considerable deliberation a solution evolved. Enter the Viscount Caravan.

True to form, often when you desire, universal laws will provide. Plus the old adage of it is not what you know, but who you know which really came into play. Thank you to: the Tate Family for the vintage caravan on your acreage right next door; Cutty the talented and obviously unaware of the enormity of the project caravan removalist; Interior Designer and Cabinet Maker neighbours - Warren and Tracey Barkle; Scott Bradford - builder extraordinaire; Cousin Paddy - roofer; talented Aunty Di - curtain maker, eldest daughter elbow grease and yours truly - project management.

We kidded ourselves with how “easy” we believed the project was going to be from start to finish. Initial observations were of course eluded by the end dream.

It was only upon really diving into the project when it was on our driveway, that we realised, maybe just maybe, we had bitten off more than we could chew. So, like Noah, whom I am sure totally doubted his devotion to the project, we took a deep breath and soldiered on.

Four months on and we are extremely close to official works completion. So proud of the achievements from all concerned in fabulous Teenager Pad creation. Super “patience” award must go to the eldest daughter, who forewent her actual bedroom to allow our two youngest the liberty of single room occupancy. Camping out on the floor has had its own serious trials and tribulations. Nicola, you have been so accommodating and understanding.

May you enjoy your newfound freedom and space in the” Viscount” – you have earned it.

KENILWORTH SCC NE WS REWARDS DAY

E

ach term, Kenilworth State Community College students have the opportunity to celebrate their great behaviour with an invitation to a mid-term Rewards Day and an end of term Rewards Day. Our most recent Rewards Day was celebrated at Mary Cairncross Park with guided walks through the rainforest and a barbeque lunch followed by old-fashioned games.

LEADERSHIP CAMP

tudents in Year 6 and 7 from Kenilworth State Community College and Conondale State School recently journeyed into the Conondale National Park and surrounds for their annual three day Leadership Camp.

Postponed in Term 1 due to flooding and wet weather, the students braved the cooler conditions to hike Mount Allen and areas surrounding Booloumba Creek and Charlie Moreland Park. Once again, the threat of poor weather saw students cut short their hike to return to civilisation a couple of hours earlier than planned. All returned with smiles and stories of their big adventure.

VOICES ON THE COAST

n the first week of Term 2, a group of five KSCC students attended the Voices on the Coast, a Youth Literature Festival coordinated by Immanuel Lutheran College, and held at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Students attended sessions with a variety of amazing authors and illustrators including Steven Herrick, Michael Gerard Bauer, Tristan Bancks and Cartoon Dave. Some of our students were also lucky enough to meet Morris Gleitzmann. It was an entertaining and inspiring day for both students and teaching staff.

SMALL SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY

A

s has become tradition, the annual Small Schools Cross Country was held at Kenilworth State Community College on Friday 9 May, with six schools (Kenilworth, Eudlo, Glenview, Mapleton, Montville and Conondale) competing for places on the Small Schools Cross Country team to attend the Nambour District Primary Schools Cross Country to be held at Bli Bli. Students competed in either the 2km or 3km course that extended from the Kenilworth State Community College campus to include the surrounding properties owned by Kenilworth Country Foods and Danny Marr.

The course has become popular with our Small Schools competitors as it represents a “true Cross Country� track, complete with cows and cow poo.

Work on the Central Parklands at Imbil should have started by the time this newsletter goes to print. The first work you will see is the construction of the new toilet block and then things will move along from there.

Valley Bees is in the process of setting up some display bee hives at the Honey Bee Farm on Hasthorpe Road.

The farm will be holding demonstrations for visitors in the not too distant future.

Congratulations to the organising committee for the very successful Easter Endurance Ride at Imbil. There were over 450 horses and riders competing in the event. Also a note of thanks goes to all the helpers over the weekend, especially the Mary Valley Show Society for the venue and supply of food to keep the attendees well fed.

The Annual International Car Rally will be travelling through the Imbil and Mary Valley areas on 21 and 22 of June. This is a very exciting time for people to take up vantage spots and view the many cars that compete in this international event.

DTMR has started work on the Mary Valley Rd and Yabba Ck Rd intersection. We have been advised that the speed limit along the approaches on the Mary Valley Rd, to this intersection, will be reduced to 80 Klm/h. The works will involve changing the “Y” to a “T” intersection, making this area a lot safer for traffic. The bus shelter has already been relocated to the southern side of the Whelan Rd intersection.

Current progress of the Mary Valley Economic Development program for the State Govt. 212 properties have settled. Twelve economic development leases have been signed with a forecast capital expenditure value of over $16million and 104 jobs, 85 tenants registered for the Tenant Purchase Scheme (TPS).

Community engagement is continuing with a second ‘Welcome to the Mary Valley’ event held at Bollier property on 2 May. There was approximately 75

new buyers, economic development proponents and locals in attendance to hear first-hand from the AQHRD proponents.

ommunity Service Awards I look forward to announcing the Nicklin Community Award recipients in my next column but as a prelude, I am pleased that the Kenilworth Community is well represented and I thank the community for getting behind our hard working volunteers.

Police Checks for Community Volunteers but not Ministers Apparently while volunteers working in Meals on Wheels need to have a police check, there is no need for politicians.

This was confirmed by the Premier when I asked him in Parliament this week whether he had undertaken police checks before appointing his Ministers.

He refused to give a definitive answer but he finally said that “people who do the crime, do the time and are then able to restart their lives and there is no exception for politicians”.

I am not sure that the majority of Queenslanders would share this sentiment.

Dam or No Dam As many in the Mary Valley will know, the talk of dams sends shivers down the spines of anyone living in a consideration area. The Government has discussed eight potential sites in Queensland, none of which thankfully, are in the Mary Valley.

Remembering the experiences we went through with the failed Traveston Crossing Dam, I recently asked the Premier if he had consulted with the eight communities that were under consideration as possible dam sites.

He said “No decisions will be made until feasibility assessments have been undertaken. Should the Government identify any feasible options, further investigations, including consultation with the community will commence.”

Until then, these communities live with the shadow of a dam hanging over their heads.

he students and staff at Shepherd Lutheran College really have proved that kindness matters as they conclude ‘The Great Kindness Challenge’ – a full week of activities devoted to doing as many kind deeds as possible at school, home and within the wider community.

The ‘Great Kindness Challenge’ was the theme of this year’s Care@GSLC Week and was created by Kids for Peace to provide schools with a tool for creating a positive school environment. In 2013 over one million students participated and performed over five million acts of kindness.

At Good Shepherd the week long celebration included a range of activities for students from Prep to Year 12 including ‘Coins of Kindness’ - where students and staff were encouraged to bring in loose change from home to build a beautiful heart with the coins.

“The students and staff really got behind this idea and we had enough coins to build a spectacular silver and gold heart,” said Mr Anthony Dyer, Principal Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

“What came as a great surprise, however, was that the loose change added up to around $1,400 which will be donated to the charity Asia Focus Australia with all proceeds going to the Ethnic Children’s Home in Chang Rai, Thailand,” said Mr Dyer.

In addition to the ‘Coins of Kindness’, activities included a communal artwork project, special food stalls, music performances as well as the traditional Year 1 and Year 12 Teddy Bear’s Picnic “Good Shepherd has been holding Care @ GSLC week for more than ten years now and every year the theme is slightly different,” said Mr Dyer.
