community spirit at high
s has happened in the past, and undoubtedly will in the future, the people of Kenilworth and surrounding district rallied together when the recent floods came and displayed the true community spirit common with country people. Much well deserved praise must go to our local policeman, the members of the Kenilworth SES, Kenilworth First Response and Fire Services. Under their combined guidance and leadership everything that required attention was expertly addressed. It would be imprudent of this paper to name any particular person or persons because everyone involved contributed and shared their particular skills and there is always the danger of inadvertently leaving someone off the list, however a special mention should be made in respect of the owners and staff at the Kenilworth Bakery for their assistance shown toward those stranded in the township during the inundation. Those stranded were housed at various locations, more particularly the SES shed, and the compliments the visitors extended to the residents of Kenilworth who displayed their generous spirit was most heart warming. Well deserved congratulations to all involved.

Kenilworth and Flooding
he Mary Valley has always been prone to flooding. The first inhabitants of this land knew the stories and passed them down through their oral history. Their descendants warned Isaac Moore where the big waters came to when he was planning to build his homestead on Kenilworth Run. Mr. Moore ignored their warnings and had the 1893 flood lap the homestead. When closer settlement began in 1891 early selectors lived in rough slab huts prior to building a more permanent structure on their land. It is quite noticeable that all those old homesteads were built high on hills, as was the original Kenilworth School (on the site of Woods Sand and Gravel works). These were all erected within memory of the biggest floods ever seen in the district (1893 16.38 metres, 1898 16.84 metres). Geographically the source of the Stanley and Mary Rivers are in close proximity in the hills beyond Maleny and possibly for that reason reporting of river heights at Kenilworth warranted reporting in Brisbane papers - in living memory of those mammoth floods.
On page 6 of The Brisbane Courier (Thursday 9 February 1899) it was reported that Hydraulic Engineer, Mr. J. B. Henderson, go over the proposed new route for the Nambour to Kenilworth telephone line for flood-warning purposes, designed (for the benefit of Gympie and the low-lying stations on the Mary River.) Saturday 14 March 1908 The Brisbane Courier, (page 5) article headlined “Rise in the Mary River”…from Kenilworth flood reporting station 12ft on the gauge, rising 4ft per hour. Kenilworth flooding continued to gain press as a point of warning to larger population areas downstream – in The Courier-Mail of Tuesday 20 March 1951, “Maleny’s heavy fall of more than 11 inches in 48 hours yesterday caused the Mary River at Kenilworth to reach 25ft. lin.; flood height there is 21ft. But the Mary’s upstream flood had not reached Gympie late last night.” The January 2011 flood reached a height of 11.27 metres at 10.46pm on January 9 Bureau of Meteorology data) – that is 5.57 metres below the 1898 flood. The Bureau has a website http://www.bom.gov.au/cgibin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ60287.html that gives details of river heights gathered from the automatic recording stations along the Mary River. From observation it has been determined that when the Mary River at the Kenilworth Homestead reaches 4.5 metres flood height – Gheerulla Creek Bridge may well be impassable. There does not appear to be any recorded knowledge of the relationship between Mary River height and the inundation of local bridges (e.g. Pickering Bridge, Obi Obi bridge, Houston Bridge). enilworth township, in particular, has suffered in many ways. The rainy events of December and January (so far) with main roads leading into Kenilworth cut restricting supplies, tourism drastically reduced with camping areas closed, caravan park numbers down and hardly a motorbike to be seen. Some sunny weather and the Australia Day Car Show helped improve things. The repair of bridges, the clearing of landslides would also accelerate improvements but the return of the: The Butcher, The Baker, The Cheese and Winemaker will help even more…
But an angel in the form of a home nurse was passing. She stopped and gave me oxygen and a couple of soft towels to support my neck. I owe my life to her and I have only your newspaper to tell my story and hope that she sees it. I was in a “halo” for three months, hospitalised for ten weeks but have made steady progress towards recovery. Miracles happen
n 13 November 2009, my husband and I were involved in a head on collision with another vehicle on a side road (Kenilworth Road?) at about 3pm. We had spent a very pleasant day in your area and were returning to Bribie Island when the accident occured. There was no airbag on the passenger side of our car and I was seriously injured. My lungs had collapsed and I was having great difficulty breathing and I had severe pain in my neck. I thought I was going to die before an ambulance arrived.

KENILWORTH vale Ena Sutton (nee Adams) 1912-2011
E
na Ivy Adams, the fourth child of Joseph and Gertrude Adams was born, prematurely in Caboolture on January 8, 1912. Because she wasn’t expected to live she was given short names. Ena commenced her schooling at Caboolture, continued at Kidaman Creek School after the family moved to Coolabine and completing her primary education at Tewantin where the family leased a fishworks, ran a café and boarding house. Ena’s secondary education necessitated her boarding in a hostel at Mt Pleasant in Gympie to attend Gympie State High. At the age of 18 the family moved back to Lower Kenilworth where her father worked for his brother Stan in the Oakey Creek sawmill. Ena was employed as bookkeeper in the business. She enjoyed the extensive social life of the district in those times - playing hockey, dances, cricket matches, picnics or church services. At one of these social events she met her future husband Douglas. The courtship lasted three and a half years, with Doug riding two miles every
Wednesday and Sunday to her home. They were married in St Matthews Church on 23 June 1934 and had their wedding breakfast in the nearby hall. Around the time of their marriage Ena had won 250 pounds in the Golden Casket and this was used to finance the purchases for their new home on the dairy farm at Moy Pocket. Ena and Doug contributed to the community life of the district through support of the Lower Kenilworth School, St Matthews Church and the Lower Kenilworth Hall. Doug playing his button accordion at many functions over the years - with a cameo television appearance by them both at the Gheerulla Hall Centenary in 2007. Doug and Ena had four children, Peter, Adrian, Barbara and Ian. Sadly Adrian passed away aged 17 years. Doug and Ena left the district in 1965 after selling the property, living in numerous locations across Queensland but never losing touch with their roots in Moy Pocket. From the age of 18 Ena would enter her cooking in shows, fetes and the CWA competitions and won prizes at state level. Ena retained her fiercely independent nature into her latter years. She was proud of reaching her 99 years and of being married 74 years and five months to Doug, of her four children, eight grandchildren and her 16 greatgrandchildren. After service at the Gympie Funeral Home Chapel, Ena was interred at the Gheerulla Cemetery on Monday 24 January 2011. At rest after a long journey.

LOCAL VOLUNTEER WELL REWARDED
K
enilworth resident Linda Green has been recognised for her hard work in the community with a Fisher Community Australia Day award, presented by Member for Fisher Peter Slipper. Mr Slipper said Mrs Green is a respected community worker in the Kenilworth area for 19 years. “Mrs Green has worked a staggering 19,650 hours with the Kenilworth First Response team for local emergencies, has volunteered with the State Emergency Service,” Mr Slipper said. “She has worked for seven years at the Kenilworth State Community School, where she has held numerous roles: including secretary and treasurer of the P&C, tuckshop convenor, president of the school bus committee, she has taught art lessons and conducted CPR classes for the children, and helped with props for school plays.” Mrs Green is known in the Kenilworth area for her fundraising, which she has done for every community organisation in the district - including the arts council, the swimming pool, the Christmas committee and the Kenilworth First Response unit. “She has been an amazing worker in the community and a role model for all,” Mr Slipper said. The annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards were established by Mr Slipper in 2000, to recognise those who volunteer their own time to make their community a better place to live. “These dedicated and hard-working residents don’t seek recognition for what they do, but Australia Day gives us an opportunity to say thanks publicly and to let them know that we do recognise their contributions, which are very much appreciated,” Mr Slipper said. Member for Fisher Peter Slipper and State Member for Kawana Jarrod Bliejie (far right) presented a Fisher Community Australia Day Award to Mrs Linda Green for her service to the Kenilworth Community.
OUR Local Filmmaker wins SUNSHINE COAST’S SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Australia day award

ev Franzi has been a professional documentary filmmaker and photojournalist for over 60 years. He still has the old vest pocket Kodak camera given to him by his father - and the first pictures he took on it that launched him on “the most wonderful life I could imagine”. His film career began at the age of 14 (thanks to the VPK) when he joined Herschells Film Productions in East Melbourne as ‘the message boy’ and junior laboratory assistant - that was in 1945. With a passion for photography and filmmaking, Kev worked his way through every department in film production with camera work and editing being his forte. He worked with the Department of Information Films Division (later re-named the Commonwealth Film Unit) on many of the Australian documentary “classics” of that era. “That was a truly inspiring experience”. With the introduction of television in 1956, he moved into TV commercial production and then to TV drama, becoming Senior Film Editor with Crawford Productions on the pioneering TV series Homicide, then Division 4, Hunter and Showcase, before becoming the Director/Editor in Crawford’s Documentary Division - back to his true love. THE QUEENSLAND ADVENTURE In 1970 Kev moved his family to Brisbane to work with the famous Poulsen Studios in their Cameracraft Film Productions unit, co-directing and editing a stream of high budget industrial and educational documentaries for the Queensland Government to promote the state’s booming development around the world. He joined the Education Department Film Centre in 1975 as writer, director and producer, again specialising in industrial subjects like the exciting Port of Brisbane Series. “’Listen to the Port’, was the best film I ever made!” In the early 1980s, Kev and his wife Jenette started making low budget or no budget AV Productions for church organisations and groups like the Brisbane Youth Service, working with street kids; the Blue Nurses; Special Caring Services; the Red Cross and Newstead House in Brisbane. They also produced a no-budget series called the Sunshine Project designed to bring pleasure and interest to people confined to nursing homes. At this time Kev started teaching photography – Basic, Intermediate and Photojournalism for TAFE (adult classes) at South Brisbane and Bald Hills Colleges.

KENILWORTH Then Kev and Jen initiated weekend photo safaris for TAFE to a wonderful place called the Kenilworth Homestead on the banks of the Mary River. Coming to Kenilworth was a life changing experience for Kev and Jen. The beauty of the country, the neat little town and the friendly people worked their magic and soon the couple purchased the Old Weaner Paddock. They built a two storey home with student accommodation and a fully equipped theatrette/studio (at their own expense) for teaching the TAFE students – on safari. Still working with the Kenilworth Homestead, Kev made a 30 minute documentary on the history of the homestead from 1850 to 1982. THE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION - KENILWORTH Having joined the committee of the Kenilworth Historical Association in 1986, Kev and Jen became active members. It was a very busy period for the “Historicals” with members building the machinery shed and then at Kev’s suggestion, joining the original building to the machinery shed to make the Roxy Cinema Display Theatrette. Council approval was obtained, and with a small grant the project was completed. Kev purchased and installed (with the help of Ed Sims Kenilworth’s first Living Treasure) a full sized 35mm projection plant with cinemascope attachments. The Roxy screenings became a vital source of fundraising for the museum. The Kenilworth Arts Council shared the returns. Treasures from Kev’s film collection were the highlight of the special event screenings and the Museum’s Living History working days. The copying and reproduction of the Museum’s extensive photo collection was another job for “the lad”. Kev and Jen made three major AV Productions for use in the Roxy Room. The first two starred that wonderful old man Ed Sims and were titled: Looking Back – Ed Sims’ Memories of Kenilworth - Parts 1 & 2. These historic productions have entertained and informed thousands of visitors to the Museum for the past 20 years. As DVDs they are still in use and still evoke an enthusiastic response. Production 3 - Listen To Kenilworth – Sounds of a Century brings static images and artifacts to life by featuring the sounds and voices of life in Kenilworth spanning a century and beyond. This is a “classic production”. During Kev’s years as president of the historical association, the new school building was added and a “Work for the Dole” project doubled the size of the museum complex, this included the new photo gallery, Kev’s special passion. KENILWORTH ‘88 – PORTRAIT OF A COUNTRY TOWN, was Kev’s personal contribution to the 1988 Bi-Centenary year. The project covered every aspect of life in Kenilworth for the whole year, including the Tom Quilty Endurance Ride and some outstanding portraits of people like R.M. Williams.
THE MOVIE MUSEUM AND ELECTRIC THEATRE In 1990 Kev decided to use his Cinema Heritage Collection (regarded as the best working cinema equipment collection in the country) to open a fully working movie museum and present a series of two hour shows on the History of Australian Cinema. Not only did this enterprise bring tens of thousands of people to Kenilworth but the shows were totally selfsupporting without the need to advertise,“word of mouth” did the job. The bus coaches just kept coming. FRED WILLS - MAN OF VISION The world’s first government filmmaker. In 1997 with permission of the Queensland Museum, Kev made a fully working replica of the Lumiere Cinematograph used by Fred Wills in l899 to film the agricultural scene all over Queensland (including Eumundi, Bli Bli and the Nambour Sugar Mill - some of Queensland’s first films). In 1999, having obtained 28 of the Fred Wills’ films, this project grew into one of the most exciting projects presented by the Queensland Museum. Kev played a major role in the project, and for the next ten years he continued to produce a series of exciting programmes for the Queensland Museum. In 2001 he received Kenilworth’s Living Treasure Award. For the Kenilworth Arts Council Kev continues to run his popular monthly Film Appreciation screenings for seniors groups and for Arts Council members and friends. KEV’S LATEST PASSION: ADVENTURES IN COMMUNITY FILMMAKING 65 years of experience in photojournalism and filmmaking has gone into this endeavour. In association with the Kenilworth Arts Council, Kev runs his workshops offering courses in community (video) filmmaking, with spectacular results. As to be expected Kev emphasizes the value of capturing and preserving our local history - yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s - and the stories of the people who are making it. THE ‘ACTION!’ KIT For the workshops Kev has written and illustrated a 40 page manual and produced a 90 minute DVD - the ‘Action!’ Kit for community filmmakers. To showcase the work of Community Filmmakers, Kev set up and presented the 2010 Timeline Festival of Short Films as part of this year’s Kenilworth Celebrates! festival “These are pictures with a purpose - and the potential of community filmmaking to enhance the lives of people everywhere is immense. I think perhaps promoting this is the best thing I’ve done - a grand finale to a life of wonder, joy and very great satisfaction - let me show you….” Kev. Franzi’s contribution to the State and this community was honoured with the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Senior Citizen of the Year Award for 2011.

enilworth Arts Council are bringing fabulous tutor Colley Whisson to the Mary Valley for a weekend painting workshop on February 12-13. Colley has recently returned from another stint teaching oils in America where they made him an offer that he could not refuse.
The oils landscapes/seascapes course will have a maximum of 10 students which is a remarkably small number considering artists are queuing around the world to learn his secrets in classes of 15 to 20. The torrent tore Jessica from her mother’s arms and the moment Stacey realised she didn’t have her baby any more, she gave up and went under water, but within moments was rescued by the helicopter and taken to hospital. Matthew was also washed away from their home, he was washed down to a neighbouring house, where he helped another family clamber to safety on their roof. When Matthew returned to their home he found their two other children Maddison 5, and Jacob 4, hanging from the top of the shower screen. Placed there for safety by Matthew’s mother Pauline. Stacey has since lost the unborn baby as well. On this dreadful day Matthew and Stacey lost their 23 month old daughter Jessica, their unborn baby, both their mothers - Pauline and Dawn as well as their home. Blue skies met excited children and relieved parents as another year of fun and learning began at the college. Whilst many people believe being at a small school has disadvantages, at the Kenilworth State Community College we believe the opportunities available to our students far outweigh any disadvantages. Many fantastic experiences and opportunities are planned for our students this year, with the aim being that learning is a never-ending experience! Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program
ollowing the recent widespread floods which caused considerable damage to sport and recreation facilities and equipment across Queensland, the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program has been activated for select communities. The program will provide one-off funding to assist incorporated not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations to re-establish their facilities and activities which support local participation. Two categories of assistance are available: (I) Grants of up to $5 000 for replacement of operational items such as sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items. (ii) Grants of up to $20 000 to assist with capital works projects to repair sport and recreation infrastructure which was damaged as a result of recent winds or flooding. Organisations can apply once in each category and receive a maximum of $25 000. Not all applications may be successful. Projects demonstrating the highest need in terms of re-establishing sport and recreation activity will take precedence. ollowing the recent floods, personal hardship assistance administered by the Department of Communities has been extended to the Gympie community for those who have suffered significant hardship and have an immediate need for essential requirements. There is also provision for some financial assistance for people who have lost essential household goods such as bedding and are uninsured. This assistance is means tested. If people have been impacted please phone 1800 173 349 or access the Department of Communities’ website at www.communities.qld.gov.au. Regional staff of the Department of Communities will follow up on all enquiries. At this stage access to some areas within the region is restricted due to flooding however all efforts will be made to make personal contact to those seeking assistance. The Commonwealth Government is making financial assistance available for those impacted by this event. Request for council information: MVI has written to Gympie Regional Council for an update on the status of the Gympie Council Economic Development Strategy, and the State Government’s plans for land use in the Mary Valley. The group understands that the government’s land use policy was to be announced by the end of 2010, but members have not been advised of this. The group is expecting a good outcome for the Mary Valley and its economic future, both from the Gympie strategy and the government planning, as outlined by Minister Hinchliffe in his June 4 2010 announcement: Members of the Mary Valley community are eager to understand how the Gympie Economic Development Strategy has identified key projects for the valley or which will directly and positively impact its economy.

OUR COMMUNITY appy New Year to everyone, what an unusual start to the New Year. The Christmas/New Year period was fairly quiet due to the rain. There were few campers and traffic was very quiet. We then had the flood which will be remembered for years as the flood of 2011. We thank most people for the way they acted during the flooding and the vast majority of residents who showed common sense and patience. A few observations about the floods and information for future floods: If you require information on road conditions, please ring the Main Roads on 131940 or RACQ on 1300 130 595 or get onto the computer at www.racq.com/roadreports or www1.131940.qld.gov.au for the latest road information. Do not ring the Police Station. We do not have any other updated information and usually get our information from these sites. Road enquiries tie up the phones and people who have genuine emergent situations cannot get through. Surprisingly, we do not get up at 5am and check all roads so that we can provide accurate information to callers from 5.30am. If you feel the need to drive around and look at roads, please give way to the Police and SES. We do not just drive around looking at floods, we usually have somewhere to go. While it may not be urgent enough for lights and sirens, it may be important and we get stuck behind vehicles doing 20km/hr to sightsee. It was amazing the number of vehicles on the road when you couldn’t drive further than the museum, forestry and Western Creek. The SES were trying to evacuate a house and were getting abused by trouble makers for blocking the road. If you have life-saving medication, make sure you have plenty on hand. Everyone knew that the flood was coming when the bridge in Imbil went out on the Friday night. The water then went down but it was obvious that it was coming back up again. Everyone had from Saturday morning to Sunday lunch time to arrange matters. We did organise urgent medication drops by helicopter, but these arrived 24 hours after arranged due to the helicopters being required for more urgent matters. If you think you are out of food and need a helicopter to deliver food, look in your pantry. It is amazing how much food is in there when you think you have none. You are not going to die if you go without bread and milk for a few days. One point that most people don’t seem to realise is that you have to pay for the food that is delivered by helicopter. You ring the supermarket and organise the

When you can’t get anywhere, you don’t need fuel. There were people who had no power and needed fuel for generators who couldn’t get it because “local tourists” were filling their vehicles. Consider others. Finally, a big thank you to the SES and Ian Blain from QFRS who put in many, many voluntary hours to ensure the safety of others and assist people during the week. They all put in long hours and the community owes them a great deal of gratitude. Also thanks to all those community members who assisted at busy times. ats off to flood disaster volunteers I have been inspired by the dedication of volunteers and local organisations who have put up their hands to assist the people of flood-ravaged areas of Queensland. If you wish to contribute to the massive flood assistance program in this state, my office is acting as a collection point for the “boxes of love” - to be donated to Nambour’s Adopt-a-town - Helidon. Local organisers who have visited the devastated town of Helidon have asked that people wishing to assist could fill a shoebox with toiletries and non-perishable goods to ease the burden of families who have lost everything. Organisers will collect the boxes in late February. People who want to can leave boxed donations at my office before February 28. I joined other Sunshine Coast volunteers when the floodwater went down, and travelled to Graceville and Ipswich to help out. I can only say that it was like working in a war zone. What was nice to see amidst the devastation was all the total strangers all joining together to help, and the many Australian flags draped around communities with notes from flood victims inscribed “thank you Australia”. Flood inquiry submissions Many people have contacted my office wishing to make comment on floodrelated matters. The Premier has advised me that her department is developing a website where people can make a submission to the Commission of Inquiry into the flood disaster. I have copies of the terms of reference in my Currie Street, Nambour office to assist people who want to make a submission to this inquiry. If people don’t have access to the government’s website when it is up and running, you can write to me and I will forward these submissions to the Premier. When further information on the website is available I will let you know. All the best for the new school year I would like to wish all of our students well in their studies this year. Parents and carers please take care around our schools when driving children to school, and be aware that the police will be doing radar work in the school zones and 40km/h zones in areas around schools. Please be aware that slow-down times in school zones vary from school to school. First Sittings of Parliament The first sittings of Parliament for 2011 will be on February 15, 16 and 17. Anyone with any State Government issues that they would like me to take up with the Government should contact me before these dates to discuss their issues. Meet me in Cooroy I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday 3 March from 10am. Council is therefore extending the discount for prompt payment by one week. You now have until Friday 25 February to pay your rates and still get the reduction. would like to applaud the many volunteers, workers and residents of the Gympie and Mary Valley area for their tireless efforts during the recent floods throughout our shire. Many of our roads are in a terrible state and will take some time to repair to even a passable state. So please bear with us as our workers do their very best to get things back to normal around the area. Our Local Disaster Plan went into action and by all accounts, worked really well. GRC Acting Mayor and Acting Chairman of the Disaster Management Group, Cr Tony Perrett advised us, that the Qld Government has activated both National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) for Council and Special Disaster Flood Assistance for primary producers and small business owners who have suffered direct damage for the flooding. Residents who wish to report unsafe road conditions are asked to phone Council’s Works Division on 54810 899. Residents and travellers who are seeking information about road conditions and whether roads are open, are requested to either contact the Department of Main Roads and transport Traffic Report Line on 131940 or refer Council’s website for information about local road closures and flood heights - www.gympie.qld.gov.au You may have noticed, when you drive around, some patches along the roads/footpaths where the council slashers seem to have missed some stands of grass. This grass is the dreaded Giant Rats Tail grass. Our slasher drivers do their utmost to try not to mow over it so that our spray gang can come along and spray it. At this time of the year the grass is more easily seen as it is in it’s flowering/ seeding stage. I have been out marking some of it so that it can be more easily seen but we do unfortunately miss some. Councils Heritage Advisory Committee along with the Arts Council are getting together to revive an old tradition from years gone by. We are going to have ‘Bands in the Park’ on the last Sunday of each month. To start with we are planning to hold these events in the Memorial Park in Gympie CBD and the day will kick off at 12 noon. Everybody is most welcome to come along and enjoy the day. Why not make it a family event and BYO chair/ blanket and maybe even a picnic lunch. With season the way it’s been everything depends on the weather, but keep an eye on the website/local papers for updates.
Imbil First Response group are in need of more volunteers who are prepared to help out, the group meets at the Imbil Fire Brigade on 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 6.30pm. A huge thanks to the volunteers during the floods. Uniforms and training are all provided. Gympie and District Hockey has a brand new artificial surface and their season sign-on is set for Friday 25 February in the evening and Saturday 26 February in the morning. I hope that this letter is not too late, and I hope that you will publish it, you are our last hope for finding these lovely old cats. I took them in a few months ago, to help the owners find them a new home, as they could could no longer keep them. A home was found on Hunsley Road in Kidamon Creek. Unfortunately the cats were left in an unsecured shed, and ran away terrified, into the night. As they are both older, domesticated cats, it would be hard for them to survive in the wild. The rain has hampered our search efforts The grey cat (Max) is the male and is very protective of his lady (Piedee). They are both desexed and have been together since they were kittens - 10 years. They are affectionate and gentle cats, but would be very scared. I would be happy to leave them in a new home if they have been taken in by a kind person. If not I will take them back and am offering a reward for them. Either way if you have seen them or know where they are please call Anna on 0422 117 017 or 5329 8305. Recent floods and rainfall events have triggered a number of mosquitoes breeding sites which have the potential to cause health related diseases and nuisances. THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE THE THREAT • Throw out containers in the yard that hold water (eg. tyres, tins, jars, etc • Change water in bird baths and pet bowls frequently • Clean roof gutters • Emptying pot plant saucers every week or filling them with sand • Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated • Use insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin (read and follow all directions) • Wear protective clothing • Ensure mosquitoes screens on rainwater tanks are repaired or kept intact.
