HARMONY DAY
tudents recently celebrated Harmony Day with a “Taste of Harmony Feast”. Due to the threat of stormy rain, we had to move our picnic undercover but that didn’t deter from the picnic-type atmosphere. Our cultural diversity was displayed with foods representing Thailand, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Estonia, South Africa, France, Vanuatu, Ireland and England. Our Aboriginal heritage was also represented with bush tucker foods. Students and parents were entertained by our Year 2/3/4 class who sang in English, Indonesian, Spanish and Italian. It was a “trés bon” harmonious day!
AUSTRALIA ZOO VISIT
A
ll Kenilworth State Community College students were invited to attend the recent “whole school” trip to Australia Zoo, linking in with Term 1 science units. Students attended an informative educational talk with staff from Australia Zoo and then made their way in groups around the very large, impressive sight. One group’s highlight was witnessing a baby rhinoceros suckling from its mother, the comment being “Wouldn’t that hurt?” The KSCC P&C Association has generously provided funding for one “whole school” excursion per term. The beauty of being a small school is that this concept is achievable both financially and physically and provides students the opportunity to work together in groups exploring the world outside Kenilworth.
T
POST OFFICE AND LIBRARY VISITS
he Prep/1 class has been heading “uptown” to visit local Kenilworth establishments including the Post Office and the Library. At the Post Office, students learnt how letters and parcels are sent and received. Students bought stamps for the letters they had written in class and then with much joy proceed to post them in the red letter box. At the Library, Mikaela treated students to story time. A special thanks to Michael, Robyn and Scamp at the Post Office and Mikaela at the Kenilworth Library for sharing our town with the Kenilworth Prep/Year 1 students.
T
he Kenilworth State Community College will hold its Cross Country Carnival on Monday 28 April. As in past years, the school will also be hosting the Small Schools Cross Country on Friday 9 May, with schools from Conondale, Montville, Mapleton, Glenview and Eudlo competing on our famous cross country track.

nfortunately Kenilworth First Responders have had a busy period since the last edition of the Mary Valley Voice with 30 call outs for assistance, that’s one 000 call out each day! Many of the call outs were for road traffic accidents and as Easter is upon us I would like to remind those travelling to please be careful on the roads. As many of you would be aware McGinn’s restaurant in Kenilworth has become a midway destination for some of our Responders as we use the facilities to complete our paper and computer reports after call outs. We really appreciate the friendship that Leanne and her team show towards Kenilworth Responders in allowing us to treat McGinn’s as our unofficial office, thanks guys and yes, great coffee!! A very happy and safe Easter to all. Hans Schinkel PH: 5472 3569

NEW MEMORIAL PROPOSED
he Kenilworth RSL Sub Branch has applied for a grant under the Queensland Government Centenary of Anzac program. The application has been supported by Councilor Greg Rogerson and has the support of the Kenilworth Hall, Show and Recreation Association and the Kenilworth and District Historical Association. Subject to the grant application succeeding it is proposed to erect a new memorial on a site immediately across the road from the present memorial which will provide a greater profile to honour the service of men and women from Kenilworth and the district. The intention is to have the new memorial ready in time for Anzac Day 2015, which is the centenary of the landings at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915. Further details about the memorial will be provided at a community meeting that will be scheduled once the Queensland Government has advised the outcome of the grant application. Graeme Mickelberg Member Kenilworth RSL Sub Branch
I
n early March I had the misfortune to fall over a roll of carpet Lenore and I were planning to lay in the Kenilworth Historical Museum, breaking my hip. A call to the ambulance saw initially instantaneous attention from Kenilworth First Response, who in their usual efficient manner attended to their duties in comforting me and preparing me for transport in a most professional manner. To them I would like to express my sincere thanks. They are a wonderful crew and well worthy of any support this township can provide. I would also like to express thanks to
the many people of Kenilworth and district who enquired after my health and offered support. Your thoughts and offers were greatly appreciated, leading me to say what I have said many times in the past - who would live anywhere else? Blair Meldrum
H
the fortnight that was
ow do you control that. A boozepilfering drunken feral pig caused chaos by running amok at an Australian campsite and starting a fight with a cow. After stealing and drinking three six-packs of beer that had been left out by campers, the animal went on to ransack rubbish bin bags before starting a fight with an innocent eyewitness cow. Following the rampage the pig decided to swim out into the middle of a river before collapsing drunk under a tree and falling asleep. Don’t drink the water. A man last year fishing on the Brisbane River dropped his beer into the river, fished it out, and continued drinking. Hours later he was violently ill and had to endure countless hospital visits since to try and fix a large mass growing from his stomach. Apparently the problem persists. Yes, that’s a croc. A resident of East Innisfail got quite a shock when he went to his backyard in the dark and rain to stop his dog barking. He shone his torch around the yard about 7.30pm and saw the reflection of a croc’s eyes. It appeared the croc was the same one that had been reported to police the night before by a member of the public, who spotted it on a nearby road. Beware you fortune tellers. A couple in London who “see into the future” failed to see this one coming: Their crystal ball, which was left exposed to direct sunlight, set their house alight. A Fire Officer commented that the blaze was the direct result of the pair’s lack of foresight. And did you know that - The national anthem of Greece has 158 verses! Editor’s note: I would like to highlight that despite the fact that Blair got hospitalised for more than two weeks at Buderim Private Hospital he never failed to contribute to the Mary Valley Voice with his now regular Fortnight that Was column. If that is not dedication and resilience I don’t know how to call it... Blair you deserve a gold medal! The MVV team wishes you a prompt recovery.

KENILWORTH POLICE
T
Greetings Kenilworthians!
hank God for the rain! The recent rains have been a much welcomed relief to our parched lands but they were also a timely reminder of what happens when you don’t drive to the conditions of the road at the time. There was a single vehicle traffic crash on Wednesday morning 26 March where, although no speed limits were breached, a corner was taken too fast for the conditions of the road at the time as it was raining. The vehicle lost control across both lanes and ping ponged off railings on either side of a bridge on the Eumundi Kenilworth Road. Lucky there were no on-coming vehicles! There were no injuries on this occasion but had there been an on-coming vehicle, this could have been an absolute tragedy. So please remember to always take into account all the conditions you are faced with when driving. Wet roads, bends in the road, tyre condition, speed, visibility, prior experience on that road in those conditions in that car; these are all real things we need to consider especially on wet roads. We also had a driver plough into a fast flowing, flooded road on Moy Pocket Road on Friday morning 28 March. This occurred at around 5.20am when it was still very dark and there had not yet been road closed signs erected indicating roads were flooded and closed. It resulted in the vehicle being washed off the causeway and left the driver stranded on his car until help arrived. It required a multi-agency rescue effort that was led by the QFES Swift Water Rescue team. Our Kenilworth Auxiliary QFES did a great job assessing the situation and arranging for the necessary resources to be deployed to affect the rescue. Thanks for that guys. We must be aware that at night, light emitted from a vehicle’s head lights bounces forward off the water ahead of you on a flooded road with little or no reflection back to the eye. This means that in areas of no street lighting, at night, a flooded road is almost invisible. So again, this incident is another reminder that in large rain events, we must be extra vigilant with our driving out here because we all know that the rivers and creeks here rise and fall rapidly. Drive with caution when approaching river and creek crossings during heavy rain events even if there are no signs up indicating a flooded road. On another note, there has been a lot of interest expressed in setting up a Kenilworth Blue Light Disco committee in order to hold Blue Light events for the eight to 15 year old kids in the Kenilworth area. These events would include music/dance nights, movie nights, and what ever other community events for the kids the committee sees as beneficial for the kids.
In order to achieve this, we need to set up the committee which must consist of a President, a Coordinator, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and a minimum of three other committee members. It is hoped that these positions will be filled at the upcoming inaugural Kenilworth Blue Light Affiliate meeting which will be held on Wednesday 30 April at 6pm at the Kenilworth State Community College. If you have an interest in joining this committee you are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting. All those who put their hand up for committee positions will need to be holders of a Blue Card and those who are not will be assisted in the application process which is free. The President and Coordinator have to be a police officer so I will undertake those roles. In relation to the secretary, some of the responsibilities will include distributing upcoming meeting agenda and attachments to committee members, to take minutes of meetings and make them available to all members, record attendance at meetings, and prepare outgoing correspondence. Responsibilities of the Treasurer include preparing financial reports for Branch meetings, ensuring financial returns are completed correctly, the ordering of admission tickets as necessary, ensuring financial records are up to date and ensuring that an audit by a certified accountant is performed at the end of the financial year, preparing for payment of invoices, and ensuring all outstanding invoices are paid within the period specified. Hopefully we can get it up and running as the benefits of these sort of events for a town and its youth have consistently proven to prevent crime long term and foster great community relationships. Finally, (sorry this has been so long…) a sum of money was found in the Kenilworth township and has been handed into the Kenilworth Police Station. If it is not claimed within the next 90 days, the finder, who has been issued a receipt for the found cash, receives the cash. If you have misplaced a sum of money contact the station to discuss your lost money. I thank the finder for doing the right thing as if property is lost by someone, it is still their property until it can be clearly shown to be abandoned. Any person who keeps property, like cash, that is found but clearly not abandoned, can be charged with the criminal offence of stealing by finding. If there’s anything else you want to know, drop me an email or give me a call. Stay safe out there! Senior Constable Adam Humphrys Officer in Charge Kenilworth Police 07 5446 0220 Humphrys.AdamJ@police.qld.gov.au Crime Stoppers on 1800 33 000. PoliceLink 131444

KENILWORTH ANZAC Day 1955
here have been questions raised regarding the Honour Board in the Kenilworth Hall – regarding the time of its placement. The Nambour Chronicle, 29.4.1955, page 3 report on the Anzac commemoration in the Kenilworth Public Hall provides the answer: The chairman (Councillor E. De Vere) spoke of the sacred significance of Anzac Day. He related his visit to the War Museum at Canberra, where the landing at Anzac Cove is depicted in the minutest detail, putting on record for all time the tremendous and seemingly impossible task given to the men of the Australian and New Zealand forces. Speakers to the uniform resolutions were Messrs. Jim Gasgoine, J. Heading, M.L.A. and Rev Williams. Mr Heading appealed to his hearers to see that the sacrifices of the Anzacs were not in vain. Australia, he said was indeed

standing on the threshold of a grave and dangerous period. A country largely undeveloped with a population of but nine million, must indeed attract the hungry eyes of the teeming millions of Asia – an Asia now becoming conscious of its own strength. If we are to hold what out men preserved for us in the two World Wars, we must all pull our weight, whatever we may be in - business, in professions or on the land, said Mr Heading. After the reverent silence, Mr. Jim Rowe recited “They shall not grow old” and the service closed with the National Anthem. Subsequent to the service, the honour board, erected on the wall above the staircase was unveiled by Mr. Heading. The speaker urged people each time they saw the honour board to resolve anew to do their utmost to prove worthy of those men they honoured. A vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Heading at the instance of Mr. G. Hassall and Councillor De Vere.

MARY VALLEY Far-A-Way Easter Endurance Carnival offers a huge program of events in Mary Valley
E
ndurance horse riders from across Australia will join International competitors at Imbil to participate in the annual Far-A-Way Easter Endurance Carnival. Events ranging from 20km to 320km rides set the Easter Endurance Carnival as the annual highlight for many Queensland endurance riders and others from across Australia. It is anticipated that well over 300 competitors and their horses will camp at the Imbil Showground over the holiday period along with their support crews and families. This event will add to the busy Easter weekend population of Imbil by over one thousand people. With the signature Easter Endurance Carnival event being the 320km Marathon spanning four days, a team of equine veterinarians headed up by Luke Annetts, will be working throughout the Carnival to assess and ensure horses’ fitness to continue in the competition. It is often joked that if riders were to be assessed in the same way that horses are, the completion rate would be much less. First timers are encouraged to ‘come and try’ in the 20km Introduction event which President Ken Moir says “A 20 km ride gives a great opportunity for those who want to try out endurance. Experienced pace riders provide support throughout the event helping first-timers get a sense of how to pace their horse so they can move on to longer rides with confidence that they can manage their horse.”
OPEN 7 DAYS 5 am to 6 pm
IMBIL
Other events include a 120 km Mini-marathon event, two 80km events and three 40 km Training events. Ken said, “The committee aims to run an event that supports riders who want to complete and to add to their endurance record, but it is also a family weekend.” Last year saw the event cancelled due to wet weather and damage to tracks. The Committee anticipates that numbers will be good. From its humble beginnings at Kenilworth in 1987, the Far A Way Riders Association has become a powerful force in Australian endurance. Twice it has organised and hosted the Tom Quilty Gold Cup event, and has also hosted FEI Internationally affiliated Championship events at Imbil. This year FAW is focusing on the Easter Endurance Carnival events, the Sparkler afternoon/evening event in September and a series of Education and training days throughout the year. OUR COMMUNITY HANDS-ON WOOD FOR ALL AT MaLENY WOOD EXPO
O
n 3 and 4 May the Maleny Showgrounds lovers of all things wood arrive from across SEQ and interstate for the annual Maleny Wood Expo. Unlike other wood shows Maleny Expo’s wood artisans must work in sustainably harvested native, weed or recycled timbers to promote sustainable use of our native timbers. As Expo Coordinator Steve McLeish says: “We’re really excited have more hands-on woodwork this year. Patt Gregory, our guest demonstrator, will encourage women to get into the wood world with her Woodwork For Women.” “Kids under 10 can experience the fun of woodwork thanks to Carba-Tec’s creative space using basic tools on simple projects.” “And the WoodShed workshops are open to everyone,” says Steve. Don Powell’s two day Hand Held Carving workshop offers an entry into the wonderful world of woodcarving. Richard Knight’s The Art of Mortise and Tenon teaches construction of this traditional joint using simple hand tools in short Saturday workshops and a full day workshop on Sunday. To learn more about the actual timber, join Ashley Sewell’s “Know Your Timber Trees” tour. But beware - his passion for trees and timber is highly infectious. For more information about the people behind this great program, and to book for the tour and all workshops, visit http://malenywoodexpo.com/whats-on For others there’s everything from superbly crafted fine furniture to hand whittled toys as well as mobile millers, chainsaw carvers, musical instrument-makers, free entertainment for all and more…. The weekend is jammed packed - bring your family and friends to relax in the Expo’s country atmosphere. The Maleny Wood Expo is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development Program, HQPlantations, South East Queensland Catchments, the Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Queensland Water and Land Carers, Geochempet, the Hinterland Times and Carba-tec as well as the many local businesses that back the event with their kind support. TAI CHI: ORIGINS and CLASSES
ai Chi, also known as shadow boxing, first appeared in the Book of Changes over 3000 years ago. The essential principles of tai chi are based on the ancient Chinese philosphy of Taoism which stresses the natural balance in all things and the need for being in spiritual and physical accord with the patterns of nature.
According to this philosphy everything is composed of two opposite, but entirely complementary, elements of yin and yang working in a relationship which is in perpetural balance. Tai chi consists of movements equally balanced between yin and yang. This is why it is so effective. Concepts such as soft, pliant, yielding, feminine are associated with yin whilst concepts such as hard, rigid, masculine are associated with yang. Both sides complement each other completely and together form a perfect whole. Things that are perfectly balanced and in harmony are at peace. A perfectly harmonised person will show this balance and completeness by their tanquility and peacefulness of mind. Having said all that its real origins and form are obscure and what is practiced as tai chi now can reliably be dated back to the 16th Century. It started with the Chen style which is characterised by its emphasis on spinal force. Its movements are similar to others but slow and soft movements intermingle with fast and hard. It is also characterised by explosive power and low stances. It is more suited to younger people. Yang style is the most popular style and was created in the early 19th Century by Yang Lee Chan who studied the Chen style and then developed his own style which is characterised by gentle, graceful, slow movements and is suitable for all ages. Sun style is the youngest of the styles and was created by Sun Lu-land around 1914. It is characterised by agile steps and by “follow steps”. This means that when one foot moves forward or back the other follows. The movements flow smoothly and incorporate a Qigong exercise whenever the direction changes. It has a high stance and is suitable for all levels of health. Over the years many other styles have developed such as the Hao and Wu. Source material courtesy Dr Paul Lam. To find out more come and enjoy an hour of gentle exercise with Lynn Hogg at the Kenilworth CWA, Mondays 10.30am to 11.30am ($7). Or try the Imbil tai chi classes Thursdays 7 till 8am and Fridays 8am to 9am. Enquiries call Lynn 5484 5006.

ood news for community groups. At last some good news to report. The Government has responded to my lobbying and agreed that some ‘not for profit community groups’ will be exempt from paying the Emergency Management and Fire Rescue Levy. Community organisations including churches, showgrounds, libraries and community halls with an E-class category will be exempt from paying the levy. In order to find out if your organisation is eligible for an exemption of the levy you must contact your local Council office. Government says ‘Sign or resign to Doctors’. I have met regularly with doctors working in the public hospital system and they have told me they will not sign the Government’s new contracts. In fact, they have made it clear that it is not about money but about trust. They said the main sticking points are: 1. Patient safety and ethical practice. 2. The employer has the power to make unilateral changes to the contract. As one doctor said to me, “Many of my colleagues are fed up with the current situation. We cannot understand what the government hopes to gain.” At the last Parliamentary sitting, I asked the Premier if he would extend the deadline for the signing of the contracts. His short answer was no. What I asked for was a reasonable extension so that negotiations could continue to resolve the stand-off in the best interests of patients. The State health system will be in chaos if the doctors walk. This has destroyed any goodwill between our specialist doctors and the Government. MP Peter Wellington

Rogo’s round-up
he Hinterland has been given a big sporting chance thanks to council acquiring 107 hectares of land approximately 1km east of the Nambour Connection Road at Woombye. This $2.2million investment involves two parcels of land which will meet the future sporting and recreational needs of our hinterland communities. Recent forecasts predicted population increases in the Nambour and Hinterland areas of more than 23,000 by 2031, so Sporting and Recreational investments like this are vital to make sure we can meet the needs of a growing community. Around 40 hectares of this land will eventually be developed for formal sports grounds while the remaining land will provide opportunities for informal sports and active recreation and conservation areas. Quarter horse racing can bring full-blown benefits. The recent announcement that a joint AustralianAmerican consortium is set to bring quarter horse racing to the Mary Valley is potentially tremendous news for this area, including Kenilworth and surrounds Quarter horse racing is big business in America, where annual prize money exceeds $125million. This consortium has received a license from the State Government to race quarter horses and a $60million facility is planned for construction near Imbil. This plan includes a hotel, convention centre and residential area for horse owners. The benefits for nearby hinterland communities are truly exciting and include the generation of 145 permanent jobs and private sector capital investment of $60-90million. This has the potential to deliver the Mary Valley a key tourism product and encourage new growth in population and business development in the region. What shouldn’t be underestimated with this proposed development is the community value generated by increased enrolments at the various schools etc which in turn flows through to the many community organisations and associations. Men’s Shed moves ahead. The Mapleton Men’s Shed is moving closer to a permanent new home. I’ve met with Council’s Legal and Property Branch to help facilitate a seamless title transfer from State Government ownership into Council hands. I’d really like to acknowledge and thank the Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell MP for lending strong support for this transfer, even though it sits outside of his electorate. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, under the Ministership of Dr John McVeigh are finalising negotiations with council to transition ownership to us on behalf of the Men’s Shed. This process is expected to take a number of months to complete. See you around the valley soon. Cr Greg Rogerson

SCDL Talking Tourism column with Simon Ambrose
s we enter the Easter school holidays period, we are pleased to hear the Sunshine Coast and surrounding Mary Valley is again a popular option and busy with visitors. In recent weeks, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) was joined by local tourism operators and coordinated a display at the Toowoomba Show promoting the region and deals for Easter, hosted a German crew from N-TV, filming a nature based travel documentary. This past week, we have also joined forces with Fraser Coast and held a road show in Sydney and Melbourne promoting our nature coasts. We were joined by 20 tourism eco-operators and presented a series of workshops for tourism product managers and retail agents. Coming up, SCDL will host a workshop, “How to write an Award Winning Tourism Submission” for those considering entering tourism awards, whether local, State or National but unsure how to make their submission stand out. This workshop is free for SCDL members. Non-members are also welcome to attend at a minimal cost of $30 per workshop. For more info or to register for a workshop, contact SCDL on (07) 5458 8820 or email industry@scdl.com.au

love the fact that science is alive and well in my kitchen. Observations, measurements and experiments explode daily as I lovingly attempt to lay food on the table for my family. Embarking on the journey of learning to cook, it does not take long to experience and learn the many do’s and don’ts. It is the little things which present many successful or challenging variants in your cooking. Try omitting an ingredient from a recipe and see what prevails, oven too hot or too cold, over-beating recipes, incorrect measuring, cooking with poor quality ingredients or simply just not following recipe instructions. My most treasured ingredient to cook with is the humble egg. They are an amazing science miracle worker for cooks. Their presence is highly sought after in thousands of recipes. Without an egg – what would become of the frittata or quiche? They are also the most natural major binding ingredient for cakes, slices, biscuits, tarts, and cheesecakes. I have recently stumbled across a cake recipe which has literally blown my mind with how it works. It’s a true scientific winner which of course, contains five of the best – “eggs”. CHIA SEED CHOCOLATE CAKE Recipe from Tania Hubbard’s Gluten Free Grain Free Food We Love Cookbook.
4 tablespoons of chia seeds soaked in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes • ½ cup raw cocoa •125 grams softened butter* • 5 medium to large eggs • 1 cup (175 grams) almond meal •1 cup coconut palm sugar (or your choice of sugar) • pinch of salt • 1 teaspoon bicarb Note * You can substitute coconut oil or olive oil for the butter or 1/3 cup of fresh cream.
Preheat oven to 180C. Line a spring form cake tin with non stick baking paper. Soak chia seeds in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. In meantime place cocoa, eggs, almond meal, sugar, salt, bicarb and butter in a bowl. Whisk to combine well and break up any lumps (at least one min). Add chia seed jelly and whisk until well combined. Pour into lined cake tin. Bake in oven for 35-40 minutes or until it bounces back when pressed in middle. Let the cake cool for 5-10 minutes in the tin. Finish cooling on a wire cooling rack. (This is the basic recipe – it is really about getting you started with the minimum of fuss. You can add cinnamon (2 teaspoons), and/or ginger (½ teaspoon), or coffee (¼ cup coffee grinds) to this cake and change its flavour dramatically or delicately if you like.)
