he third Drinks on the Deck at the Kenilworth Hotel was attended by 35 people who joined in the fun. Tales from England by Martin Rhodes followed by some light hearted suggestions to get Kenilworth on the map had everyone amused. The tales of the disappearing sculpture and its provocative names will attract tourists from wide and far. Councillor Greg Rogerson also announced the installation of a new Gazebo and barbecue area for Isaac Moore Park. Keep up the good work for Kenilworth Greg! Members are reminded that there is a General Meeting on Wednesday April 17 6.30 pm at the CWA Hall. We are fortunate to have Karen Fitzgibbons from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland who will speak about the support available to local chambers and their members from CCIQ. The Kenilworth Chamber is a member of CCIQ, and can assist small businesses in many ways, and look at data and research locally. Their website is http://www.cciq.com.au This will be a valuable meeting for all local businesses. KENILWORTH R.S.L. THE FORGOTTEN WAR
his month sixty-two years ago there was a forgotten battle in a forgotten war that had been declared by the United Nations which called for member nations to help a new nation which had been invaded. That “forgotten war” is the Korean War and the battle is the Battle of Kapyong. There are also four forgotten Australian heroes, yes heroes, who received medals from both the American and South Korean governments for their heroism in battle and the fact that their action saved the war. At the end of World War II - August 1945 - Russian troops occupied Korea down to the 38th Parallel. The United States immediately occupied the southern part, called an election which was won by those Koreans who did not want to have communist rule. The Russians refused the UN request for an election in the north and set up a communist style dictatorship. Battle of Kapyong The Korean War began on 25 June, 1950, when North Korean soldiers crossed the 39th Parallel and invaded South Korea. The United Nations condemned the invasion and called for military aid to help South Korea. Sixteen countries, among them Australia, sent troops. The war ended on 27 July 1953 when the United Nations and North Korea signed a truce. A permanent peace treaty was never signed. This war was one of the bloodiest in history. The Battle of Kapyong took place in the Kapyong River Valley which is a key route south to Seoul. It was fought between the Chinese Communist Army and the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) and 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry which were supported by New Zealand artillery and US Sherman tanks. The Battle of Kapyong took place 22-25 April 1951. The South Korean Army was fighting the North Koreans and Chinese in the north but were overwhelmed and fled south in disarray. The Chinese infiltrated the fleeing South Koreans and passed over the Australian perimeter. The Australians and Canadians were ordered to form a blocking array in the Kapyong valley. The Australians occupied Hill 504 on the east of the river with B Company the forward company. They were battle weary because they had been fighting all winter and had just been sent to Kapyong to rest when the 300 000 Chinese launched their Spring offensive. 3RAR had 600 men. Ray Parry, Kevin Simms, Les Widbourne and Heck Roberts were dispatched to defend the rear of B Company’s position. They dug in on the top of a small knoll at the foot of Hill 504. They could hear the battle coming down the valley towards them. They knew it would arrive and tension grew as they had to find the strength

of character and remember their training to do what they had to do. There were four of them with hundreds of Chinese coming at them. The Chinese charged forward in waves to be beaten back by machine gun fire, rifle fire and grenades. The first wave struck. To quote one of them after the battle: “It’s not the number, it’s the persistence. The first wave comes, you get rid of them, then the next comes and the next and all the time your ammunition is going down, down, down.” They held all night. After 24 hours of intensive fighting the Chinese offensive halted. Lance Corporal Ray Parry won the Military Medal for courageous leadership and the whole Battalion was awarded a US Presidential Citation - the US equivalent of the Victoria Cross. They also received a medal from the South Korean government. I hope that it is not too politically incorrect for our children to learn about the heroes who protect us. It is not only military but police also. It is in those battles that you can see the strength of character of Australia reflected in these soldiers. 32 Australians lost their lives at Kapyong. Lest we forget Sonja Kallman

KENILWORTH Saturday June 5, 1909
T
he Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser published the following report on page 4 in the District Notes:-
Fine weather prevailed on the day chosen (Empire Day) for holding Kenilworth Athletic Club’s sports. The result was an unusually large gathering for the district over three hundred people being on the grounds which were kindly lent by Mr. C. Sharry for the occasion. A stranger, on coming to the sports, might well have wondered where all the people came from. The crowd of hacks in the adjoining paddock would have done credit to a Toowoomba sale yard, as in this district, of course, everyone favours the equine method of locomotion. The numerous events during the day were well competed for, and stubbornly contested, and it is worthy of note that in every instance the prize was well earned. Four teams of brawn and muscle competed in the tug of war, which caused great excitement. The winners were the Imbil team after a hard battle with the Obi Obi team. During the luncheon hour, the Belli and Kenilworth teams had a pull on their own, resulting in a win for Belli after another exciting tussle.
Historic Note: After Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, Empire Day was established to honour her. It was celebrated each year throughout the British Empire on 24 May, the day of her birth. http://trove.nla.gov.au/forum/showthread.php?449Empire-Day-and-Cracker-Night Definition of Shanks’s pony: used to refer to one’s own legs and the action of walking as a means of conveyance http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/ Shanks’s%2Bpony Can anyone shed any light on what a Cigar and Umbrella Race or a Benedicts Race might have involved? Please forward any information to PO Box 166 Kenilworth or bring it along to the Museum in Alexandra Street any Sunday or email kenilworthmuseum@gmail.com Photo: 1909 Empire Day horseman.
The ball at night was a great success, but was somewhat marred by a change to showery weather, which caused the night to grow very dark, so dark in fact that one or two unfortunates wended their way homewards on the proverbial “shank’s pony”, being unable to find their horses in a two acre paddock, when in one or two instances the “neddies” were there all the time. And there was no strong drink on the ground Mr. Editor! List of a selection of the events and prize winners 1st Place

MARY VALLEY STAGS RUGBY LEAGUE NEWS
he footy season is warming up again. The season fixtures kicked off on Saturday 6 April with a start at Palmwoods playing Beachmere. The boys have been training for a couple of weeks at the Kandanga Jack Spicer Oval on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons starting around 6pm and they are really putting in the hard yards to be very fit for the start of the season. We have played a pre-season trail match against Pomona-Cooran in March and this match was very well played. We were only able to field a team with minimal reserves while Pomona-Cooran had a bench that was overflowing with players and we came out second best but only by two points.

We had some scrappy play which the opposition took advantage of but overall a great effort by the boys on the field. This year’s competition consists of nine teams across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. It will be a very interesting year with Beewah dropping back from an A Grade club to fielding a C Grade team only. Any players wishing to sign-on for the season just call in at training with your ID and talk to Alan Lutton. We anticipate our first home game to be on Saturday 27 April against Kawana being played at Kandanga’s Jack Spicer Oval. It will be great to initiate the oval on this first home game for the year after all the work Gympie Regional Council has done upgrading the grounds and making it into an excellent playing field over the past year. The oval looks magnificent after all the work and the rain earlier this year despite being inundated with substantial fast flowing flood waters. Junior Stags have started training at Kandanga on Thursday afternoons at 4pm. We are still looking to fill a team so we can have our own “Stags” team, so any juniors interested please come down and join us. We are looking for a canteen convener for this season as our managers from last year are travelling Australia which I hope they are enjoying very much. Anybody interested please let us know asap so we can get organised for the season, your help would be very much appreciated. Jenny Carlson

MARY VALLEY PERMACULTURE NOOSA Presents Leonie Shanahan & Fiona Ball “Permaculture with Children”
O
n Thursday 18 April 2013 from 7pm at Memorial Hall, Maple St, Cooroy (next to RSL) together Leonie Shanahan of Edible School Gardens, and Fiona Ball and Carly Garner of The Natureweavers Place, will share their respective journeys, bringing health and wellbeing of the children of the Sunshine Coast. With many years of experience in working with earth and children, topics such as permaculture in schools, nutrition, earth craft, bush craft, and the hands on exploration of wild spaces in nature through story, science, and the play of children. Children learn by hands on growing their own food a practical and empowering skill that stays with them for life. In a world of high food prices and food shortages this skill becomes even more valuable. It also incorporates physical health and wellbeing as you see the gardens growing. It’s amazing just how positively an hour outside working with nature can work for children such as behaviour management. Children feel good about themselves and discover they can succeed in the garden. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the new bridge would provide an improved connection for Conondale, Maleny and Kenilworth communities. “The existing timber structure will be replaced with a higher, two-lane concrete bridge that will improve flood immunity and provide a more reliable route for the users of this road,” Mr Powell said. “When the old timber bridge was damaged by floods in 2010 and 2011, access for local communities and motorists was cut for days at a time. “At almost three metres higher than the current bridge, the replacement has been designed to increase safety and durability and will enable the community and vital local industry to keep using the route during rain events.” Mr Powell said careful consideration was being given to the environmental impacts to the Mary River during construction. “The Mary River is home to several iconic species and construction activity in the water is occurring outside the breeding periods of these species,” he said. “There will also be some required tree removal and revegetation as the alignment of the new bridge will be slightly different to the existing bridge.” Motorists are urged to drive carefully and follow directions of traffic controllers and road works signage. The project to replace Grigor Bridge is being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, a joint federal and state initiative. Up-to-date information on road conditions and traffic reports is available on the Traffic and Travel Information website at 131940.qld.gov.au or by calling 13 19 40.
New Flexilink service to be trialled between Lake Macdonald and Cooroy
A
said the Lake Macdonald Flexilink service trial is funded by council’s Public Transport Levy to improve access to buses between Cooroy, Nambour and Noosa. “The Levy provides the critical seed funding to help trial new transport routes and services across the Coast, and this includes Flexilink,” he said. “Flexilink services give communities with fewer travel options transport that’s affordable, safe and reliable so they can access public bus and train services. “Council consulted with local residents along the route to see if a service between Lake Macdonald and Cooroy would meet passenger needs and the feedback we received was very positive. “This trial is an on-demand service that has been scheduled to connect with Cooroy to Nambour and Cooroy to Noosa TransLink services via routes 631 and 632. It could also be used by visitors and the wider community to access attractions like the Noosa Botanic Gardens. “We’ll monitor the number of trips being booked for the service as well as passenger numbers, over the next three months. At this stage the trial will operate until June 30.” The service is contracted to Suncoast Cabs and will cost $2 for adults and $1 for children and concession cardholders. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington encouraged residents to use the service during the trial period. “The return service runs between Cooroy and Lake Macdonald, travelling via Emerald, Myall and Elm Streets, Lake Macdonald Drive, Forest Acres Drive and Koala Crescent,” he said. “I encourage local residents to make the most of this trial so we can determine if this route and service is a viable travel option for this community in the future – people need to use it to keep it.” Four Flexilink trial services are currently operating in the region, including Peachester to Beerwah, Conondale via Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton, and Boreen Point to Tewantin. A brochure including a timetable for the Lake Macdonald to Cooroy Flexilink trial can be downloaded on council’s website. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available. Bookings are essential, phone 1300 511 163.

OUR COMMUNITY Gympie Voters Get Up and Take Federal Issues Into their Own Hands
G
ympie residents met at the Phoenix Hotel earlier this month to discuss federal election issues as part of a national Get Together supported by the national advocacy group ‘GetUp’. “The aim of the Get Together was to find out which federal issues matter most to people in this electorate,” said Adele Coombs, who hosted the meeting on behalf of the Gympie WASP Group. The Gympie Get Together identified three main concerns for the Wide Bay electorate in the federal election this year: Keeping the independent assessment of major projects under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act; Making Australia a world leader in renewable energies rather than exporting fossil fuels; and protecting the Great Barrier Reef as a national icon from the proposed development for coal and gas export. The group strongly supported their Wide Bay MP Warren Truss’s views on the importance of independent federal environmental assessment of major State-supported projects. “Independent assessment under the EPBC Act is what protected our Mary River and stopped the Traveston Crossing Dam,” said Glenda Pickersgill, who attended the Get Together. “We need to keep this independent approval process to protect our national treasures,” added Glenda. Following the decision not to grant federal approval for the Qld State government’s Traveston Crossing Dam, Warren Truss, Member for Wide Bay and Leader of the National Party, had this to say: Similar views were also expressed in most of the submissions to a recent Senate Inquiry into the EPBC Act, and the multi-party committee report recommended that the government consider establishing a totally independent approval process rather than hand federal environmental approval powers over to State governments. “We hope Mr Truss will maintain this stance in parliamentary debate during the lead-up to this year’s election,” said Steve Burgess, who attended the Get Together. “The Mary River is the southern-most river in the Barrier Reef catchment,” said Steve. “If we can’t protect the national icon of our Great Barrier Reef, what can we protect?” “Rather than dredging and silting up the reef for exporting more fossil fuels, Australia needs to support renewable energy nationally,” said Adele Coombs. “There are many voters in this electorate who would like to join the push for solar power, but infrastructure is not ready to support more solar power. We need a better tariff structure, grid feed-in, and more incentives for buying solar hot water systems. More support for 100 percent renewable energy in Australia would provide more jobs that don’t cost the Barrier Reef.” said Adele. “Instead of scrapping

renewable energy projects, Australia could be a world leader in renewable energies”. Solar thermal power projects planned at Cloncurry and Chinchilla to support renewable energy targets were scrapped by the newly elected Newman state government last year. More than 400 Get Togethers were held around the country this week. The Get Togethers were not about supporting one particular party, rather they were about hearing the concerns of voters and working out which issues they felt needed the most attention. GetUp National Director Sam McLean said the Get Togethers were designed to start a national conversation.“Ultimately, the most important thing is that people realise they have a voice and that voice deserves to be heard.” Pictured: Lauren Granger-Brown, Glenda Pickersgill, Ian Mackay, Steve Burgess, Peter Gillbank, Jason Makeig, Adele Coombs and Jeff Douwes at the Get Up Get Together

omething about Mary - Inspiring Community Connection to Mary River Stories” is an exciting new publication by the MRCCC featuring the five priority species that are the focus of the Mary River Threatened Aquatic Species Recovery Plan. Suitable for use as an educational resource, or as a gift for friends and family, this booklet was created through a collaboration between graphic designer Glenbo Craig and MRCCC staff member Tanzi Smith (pictured below). Also, local cartoonist Jeff Douwes has applied his artistic flair to create an A3 poster that provides a caricature of the Mary River and her main habitat features. Thanks to Be Natural Cereals and Snacks and Landcare Australia Ltd for providing a “Be Natural Landcare Australia” grant to support the design of the booklet and the “Something about Mary” workshops attended by over 200 people throughout October, November and December 2012. Printed versions of the booklet are now on sale for $5.50 including GST. They can be purchased from the Mary River Resource Centre in Gympie, the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere in Hervey Bay and the Save the Mary Museum and Education Centre in Kandanga. Miss Show Girl 2012 Miss Krystle Johnston and Rural Ambassador 2012 Miss Felicity Grigor both progressed to the Near-North Coast competition last year with Felicity becoming a State Finalist as Rural Ambassador at the EKKA. The young ladies have only positively developed from their experience in the Show Girl Competition and encourage other members of the community to become involved. “We urge entrants not to think of the competition as a ‘competition’ but instead a fun, learning experience with friends. Both of our experiences were fantastic and we believe that yours will be too”, said Miss Johnston and Miss Grigor. Rogo’s round-up
enilworth was certainly the place to be over the Easter holiday weekend for the Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Fest. I personally enjoyed the vibrant, fun and entertaining activities on offer for locals and visitors to town. I’ve been hearing great reports from just about everyone so well done and congratulations Kenilworth for making it such a memorable and enjoyable weekend. We are getting closer to having new entry signs designed and installed for Kenilworth. I met with a number of community members recently to look closely at some draft designs and talk about the look and feel for the new signage. Local sign designer, Elli Schlunke has developed the draft concept for the new signs and they will now progress into detailed designs. The existing entry signs are being replaced as they are tired and almost falling over it’s time for a fresh new look that maintains the character and charm of the existing signs. I’m hoping you’ll see the new signage installed in the next couple of months. Nominations are open for council’s 2013 Living Smart ‘Glossies’ Awards and I encourage you to get your nominations in now. The Glossies recognise sustainability excellence in a range of areas including building design and construction, eco efficiency in business operations, greening the arts, innovation in services and products, and edible gardening. We have so many people right throughout the Valley excelling in all of these areas and it’s time to make sure they get recognised for their efforts. Check council’s website for all the details. Catch you in the Valley. Cr Greg Rogerson

There was a cockatoo with two tags on its legs. A man wanted to buy it. He asked the shopkeeper what the cockatoo would do if he pulled the left tag. ‘He’ll sing God Save the Queen’ the shopkeeper said. ‘And what will happen if I pull the right tag?’ ‘He’ll sing Advance Australia Fair’ said the shopkeeper. ‘And what will happen if I pull both tags?’ Then the cockatoo spoke up and said, ‘I will fall off the perch!’
