KENILWORTH And we thought life in the 21st Century was difficult!

rthur Tanner wrote an article published on page five of the Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser on Friday 11 May 1951 entitled Early Kenilworth Incidents Recalled. The following are quotes from the publication.

reached his patient. Next morning the doctor refused to make the return trip unless an urgent call should force him to do so, although the river had fallen considerably, and Kenilworth boasted a resident doctor for a couple of days. Kenilworth Arts Council Snippets Calling artists and designers to design a Seat for the River Park at Kenilworth In the early 20‘s I opened the first store in Kenilworth, and storekeeping here in those days had much in common with farming. Bad roads, rivers in flood, sickness, getting cream away, and stores back to the farmers, was everyone’s business. PLANNED FOR BETTER DAYS All these things called for some hard work and much inconvenience, but in spite of these hardships, everyone was happy and planned for better days. Early in 1925, it was impossible to get the heavy truck through the Brooloo scrub back to Kenilworth with its meagre load of 12 bags of flour. There being 16 cans of cream to go away from Kenilworth, the local garage man, Mr. Tom Tait, and myself, set off at 9am with the cream on a Ford table-top truck, to reach the other truck four miles distant. After being bogged and unloading and reloading the cream and flour several times, we succeeded in getting the cream over in two loads, and half the flour home. With the balance of the flour we were hopelessly bogged a mile from Kenilworth, and walked home at 10pm and called it a day. PRIOR TO BRIDGES On one occasion before there were bridges on the Kenilworth-Eumundi road, a local resident required urgent medical attention when the floods were high. The patient could not be moved and contact was made with a Eumundi doctor who journeyed to Kenilworth per boat over creeks and German wagon between crossings. It was well into the night when he at last arrived at the flooded Mary River, nearly half a mile wide, and after much anxiety

he background to this competition is based on the reality TV programme ‘The Renovators’ which was shown last year around the time of our Kenilworth Celebrates! Art festival at the end of September. The contestants were brought to Brisbane to help with renovation of a community club premises that had been badly damaged by the January floods. Another part of their visit was to design and make a seat that would be installed at the South Bank gardens (see photo below). Late last year the Sunshine Council organised a park at the Mary River end of Charles Street, so that it could be a place for families to relax, play, fish, canoe/kayak, as well as to protect the endangered species of the river. After watching the episode of the seat design, the idea of having a competition to design a seat for our new park was born. Paul Tatton suggested that the Council might provide grants as are outlined in the Expressions of Interest document on the website. Much to the delight of members of the Kenilworth Arts Council, recently the Council notified us that we had won a grant to start the competition. Please phone 5472 3223, and if the office is not manned a message can be left.

ZEN MEDITATION IN KENILWORTH

f you are interested in learning about Zen meditation there is an opportunity to explore this spiritual practice at a series of introductory workshops in Kenilworth. The course is being offered through the Brisbane-based Sun Mountain Zen community which established a weekly sitting group in Kenilworth in 2010. Zen is appropriate to all who seek a meditation practice. It can be a positive and practical way of entering into a practice which puts one in touch with the truth of who we really are and opens us to a compassionate way of life. The course is designed to introduce participants to all aspects of Zen practice. It is structured into four sessions with the option of attending a one-day retreat at the end of the four sessions. The sessions are set out to help participants gain a basic knowledge and experience of Zen. It is anticipated that one of the teachers from Brisbane will attend one of the sessions. The workshop will be held on Wednesday 25 April from 5.30pm - 7pm at St John Bosco Church, Phillip St, Kenilworth. It costs $10 per session or $35 as full payment at first session and $30 for one day retreat. For further information call Glen and Sue Wolter 5446 0158 or visit www.sunmountainzen.org.au

o the people of Nicklin I pen this letter to you to thank you for allowing me the privilege of continuing to represent you in state parliament. Queenslanders have overwhelmingly voted for change and shown that governments cannot ignore the voices of the people. I have written to Premier Newman to congratulate him on his win. I look forward to meeting him and discussing how the new parliament will operate. For the people who gave me their vote, I thank you sincerely and for those who voted for change, I hope that during this term I can convince you that I can work with anyone in the best interest of our electorate. My door will remain open to anyone who needs my help. To my loyal volunteers, the Wellington’s Army, I couldn’t have done it without you - as always my heartfelt thanks. Yours sincerely Peter Wellington

COOROY Probus Club UPDATES

Easter events to occupy young minds at Cooroy Library

xtreme weather saw the delay of the Cooroy Probus Club’s AGM but when finally held the members celebrated yet another very successful year of fun and fellowship. As retiring President, John Pluck, wrote in his report ”we must be doing something right”. The club has enjoyed a very stable 12 months with no resignations, good attendance at meetings and with a vast array of social events all well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. John went on to say “I think it comes down to the positive attitudes of all our members – our friendliness, co-operation and our mutual support, and above all, our determination to have a good time.” Special thanks were extended to Trevor and Carol Blake who are finally taking a break after many years of being the driving force behind our social program. A great job done by two wonderful members. It is no wonder people travel from far and wide to be involved in this very active and sociable Probus group. Membership is still open – in fact there are just a couple of places left for anyone interested in joining. aster break is just around the corner and Sunshine Coast Council is offering an exciting program of activities to nourish young bodies and minds at the Cooroy Library from 2 to 14 April 2012. Cooroy Library is planning a feast of Easter activities to entertain the family covering everything from craft to slow-motion animation for children of all ages. Kids can make their very own Just Ducky Tennis Ball Chick – which is a fluffy tennis ball duckling with a winning waddle – or create their very own Easter baskets and cards to give to family and friends. Back by demand are the ever popular Ani-Movie workshop sessions where kids can create their own travel themed stop-motion movies using lego, plasticine, figurines and their imagination. Library staff will edit the final product and provide a DVD copy for children to collect and share with their friends and family. Stay tuned to Cooroy Library events as selected Ani-Movies may even be screened at the library’s Rooftop Cinema in May. For those kids who enjoy competition, they can dare their friends to a challenge and test their skills in the Wii Tournament, or join the Pokémon Club and play the Wii, DS Pokémon games and swap Pokémon cards. Families are invited to attend the popular Flicks in the Sticks which will present the classic movie Titanic on the library rooftop from 6.30pm on Friday 13 April to commemorate the centenary of one of the most infamous stories in history. Sunshine Coast Libraries will be closed from Good Friday 6 April to Easter Monday 9 April and returning to normal hours on Tuesday 10 April. For more information or to book for any of the Easter activities visit council’s website or call Cooroy Library on 5454 9000.

OUR COMMUNITY 75th year of Maleny Agricultural Show brings change

regarding sponsorship, the Maleny Show or the Show Ball please do not hesitate to contact Felicity Grigor through the show office on 5494 2008 or visit the website for application forms www.malenyshowsociety.org.au Ivan Hankinson, President of Maleny Show Society welcomes Felicity Grigor, promotions and sponsorship officer for the 75th Maleny Agricultural Show with part of the historical display for the Show.

T

t is the start of a new Show year and with that brings change to the Maleny Show Society with Sunshine Coast University student Felicity Grigor joining the team as the Sponsorship and Promotions Officer. Miss Grigor who is in her final year of studying a Bachelor of Public Relations was more than eager to embrace the opportunity given by the Show Society Committee and in particular her Grandfather Bob Hawkins, who is the Treasurer of the Committee. The role undertaken by Miss Grigor will include seeking sponsorship for the 75th Maleny Agricultural Show to be held on the 1 and 2 of June. In addition to encouraging local businesses to support the community-orientated show, she will also have the responsibility of promoting the Maleny Show Ball to be held on Saturday 19 May. Miss Grigor who has only been working within the role for two months still loves every moment and is currently encouraging community members to enter the Miss Show Girl, Junior Show Princess and Charity Person competitions. “In celebration of the 75th Maleny Agricultural Show this year the winner of the Charity Person competition will receive $5,000 worth of travel vouchers and cash, so it is definitely worth entering”, states Miss Grigor. She highly recommends entering the Show Ball, “it is a fun night to be had by all, however entrants in all categories also have the opportunity to develop their skills in public speaking, interviewing and public appearance; which are all vital skills to obtain”, states Miss Grigor. The 75th commemorative Show Schedule is now available and includes a four-page coloured lift-out filled with photographs that date back to the very first Maleny Agricultural Show. his is what two quarry trucks have done to our roads for the $3million upgrade on the Kin Kin Pomona Range in just two days. This is at the bottom of our road 1km from the Kin Kin Pomona range. There are many other parts of the road which are damaged but they are unsafe to stop to take photos. This is what we are dealing with just from the roadworks. Imagine when the MEGA quarry is in full force of the hundreds of quarry trucks going along this same road six days a week. To upgrade the entire road will cost $70 million but Main Roads aren’t prepared to pay that. This MEGA quarry will end up costing millions to the Sunshine Coast Council and Main Roads because of the constant roadworks the quarry trucks will cause! The key is the safety for our community! No MEGA quarry in the Noosa Hinterland which is part of the Noosa Biosphere. THIS ROAD IS NOT DESIGNED FOR HEAVY TRUCKS AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED, STOP THIS MADNESS! MARY VALLEY Hive of activity at Mary Valley Men’s Shed

T

he Mary Valley’s men folk have a new group and a new mission, and it’s helping to build the valley bee population as well as creating a network for the blokes who live in the country town. The Mary Valley Men’s Shed has just handed over a consignment of 10 bee hives to apiarist Chris Fuller, who operates Kin Kin Bees, and shed coordinator Ken Ward couldn’t be happier. “We just need to get ourselves a permanent home – a real shed on a block in the valley – and we will be set,” Ken said. At the moment the group keeps tools and projects at the Kandanga Information Centre in Main Street, Kandanga. The bee hive project came about with a member’s connections to Chris Fuller, one of the people in the Gympie region working to re-invigorate the local populations of native bees, which are vital to the natural environment. Ken said the native bees were the little black stingless

ones found in the garden. The hives have been designed along the lines of a very old honey bee hive. “We have done the work from an idea to completion of the first batch of 10 in co-operation with Chris, who will be stocking them with bees,” Ken said. The Men’s Shed meets at the Kandanga Information Centre building each fortnight at 6pm on Saturdays. Members come from around the valley including Dagun and Imbil, and the next meetings will be held on March 17 and March 31. For inquiries ring Ken on 5484 3143. Photo left: Happy customer Chris Fuller receives the first batch of hives for his Kin Kin Bees business. CHANGE IS IN THE AIR

s there appears to be a change brewing with a couple of new businesses getting going in the village there is a general feeling in the community that we have to kick this process along. There have been meetings by DIP and DERM which unfortunately are only open to the community with special permission. DIP is concerned with planning for redevelopment after the dam fiasco, much the same as DERM although along slightly different lines. Contact to DIP may be found through the Friends of Kandanga, while contact for DERM may be through Julie Worth, Karrabee Bus and Coach, Amamoor.

In view, hopefully, of some changes brewing the Friends of Kandanga decided it was time to lift the status of this organisation and become Friends of Kandanga with a board of management, where the board is now occupied by members who were closely involved before, as well as several new residents and business people. The Centre has good facilities which cover the railway markets, pulishing the Kandanga Rag, print shop, internet café, library, coffee shop, workshop and meeting space, information centre, gift shop, memorabilia, sports and recreation ground and RV activities. The workshop area is providing an area for the Mens Shed which is progressing quite well with its project of building native bee hives. There are also some interesting developments appearing, so hopefuly we can soon move into our own shed. Contact for the Men’s Shed is Ken Ward 5484 3143.

OUR COMMUNITY Centenary year for the Eumundi School of Arts - A Prelude

T

he return of the Picture Show Man The Eumundi School of Arts hall will celebrate its 100 birthday later this year. For almost half a century the hall was used as a venue by the travelling picture show men and later as a permanent cinema. To celebrate this aspect of the building’s history, the resident Eumundi Independent Theatre Group invited local filmmaker and film historian Kev Franzi to present a special introduction to the screening of the iconic Australian film The Picture Show Man. The stars of the film are John Meillon, Rod Taylor and John Ewart. “This film is a little gem.” The one hour introduction will be very special - using the full resources of Kev’s movie museum and film collection to illustrate the skills and technology used by our early picture show men. Then the exciting story of how moving pictures evolved to become the amazing 3D Digital experience of today. The spectacular finale of the introduction titled “Echoes in the Hall” is a journey through the golden years of cinema where we will re-live some of the greatest moments - the drama, comedy, tragedy, music, travel and enlightenment - a reminder to all of the great entertainment that the movies have brought us in a place like this. We salute the local picture show men who made it all possible. And don’t miss the Kenilworth connection. 3 PERFORMANCES ONLY: April 20, 21 and 22. Booking is essential. Phone 5472 8200.

MARY VALLEY

K

Mary Valley Koolewong Par3 Golf Course

oolewong Par3 golf course is situated 5km North of Imbil at 63 Barsby Road and is only a short drive from all the townships in the Mary Valley so being nearly in the centre of the valley is an ideal place to come and unwind and it is not a long trip to get here. Easter break is fast approaching and we have certainly experienced some wet weeks recently with some flooding in the area but our golf course has weathered this pretty well and is in good shape. So it is a good time of the year from now on to come out and enjoy our facility here and have some fun especially over the Easter break. We should have our golf buggy up and running by the time you read this, so if you like to enjoy a game of golf but prefer to ride around in a buggy then you can hire one here at Koolewong Par3. The awning at the front of our reception has been completed which has added extra shade and sitting area where you can enjoy a cold drink or a good cuppa. There are also barbecue facilities available if you want to bring your own lunch. The warm-up putting green is coming along and you will be able to practice a bit of pitching or putting before you start to play the course. If there is a group of you then you could even have a little putting competition amongst yourselves as well. So if you are up here in the beautiful Mary Valley over the holidays make sure you put Koolewong Par3 Golf Course on your list of things to do while visiting our area. It is a great place to bring the whole family and have some fun and it is quite an affordable holiday activity. We have hire clubs as well so all you have to do is turn up and we will look after you. For any enquiries or to book in to play give me a call on 5484 5999 or mobile 0407 640 516 and until next time enjoy life and don’t forget that no matter how busy you are always leave time for some leisure activities as it is good for the mind, body and soul. The ‘other’ Kiwi fruit goes organic

B

elli Park-based Hinterland Feijoas has now been certified as the only Australian organic farmer of the feijoa fruit beloved of New Zealanders. The producer, an affiliate of the growing Seasons of the Sun group which is backed by Sunshine Coast Council, has been awarded organic-in-conversion status. Hinterland Feijoas owner Sally Hookey said the certification has coincided with the opening of her and partner Peter Heineger’s Belli Park farm to the public. “This is wonderful news, but we have already been farming organically,” she said. “It’s a three-year process to receive organic certification: at the end of the first year if your soil and produce are cleared you are provisionally certified; you can sell as certified organic-in-conversion at the end of two years after being audited – and you are audited every year from there.” Ms Hookey said feijoas originated in South America but are a huge favourite and staple in New Zealand, and are coming into their peak season now. OUR P OLITICS Watt matters “Thank You Mary valley”

I

would like to announce that I will not be standing for the next term of council.

This decision has not been taken lightly given the goals that still need to be achieved in Council itself and particularly in the Mary Valley region that requiring a strong and competent Divisional Councillor. I have been presented with increasing opportunities recently which I have had to decline because of my role as a full time Councillor; these include invitations to participate in International Business Study Tours to China and USA and to undertake consulting work. I also have the opportunity to undertake a PhD with Monash after finalising my Masters this year. My research has taken me into the area of Regional Development, how it is delivered on the ground through Federal, State and Local Government policy and practice, and how it can be made more relevant to our regions. If I am locked into another four year term I also cannot contribute to the development or research in this area. With the pending conclusion of this term of council, and continuing opportunities arising, this has forced me to reconsider my immediate future path. There are a lot of people in the Mary Valley particularly, who are very disappointed that I am not running as they are concerned for the future of the Mary Valley if there is no strong leader or advocate working for them at a Council level. I am making this announcement on the first day of nominations so that a new strong and capable candidate will be encouraged to stand for Division 8 and the Mary Valley. This region still requires significant work and support from this council and I know I have had to work overtime to gain any recognition of the issues still being experienced. It is general knowledge that if there is no one who is capable of competently and dynamically assisting and acting on behalf of the Mary Valley people, then that particular region is at a very high risk socially and economically. This Division needs someone who understands that this is a serious issue requiring serious consideration. I am happy to work with a good, strong nominee who has the best interests of the Valley at heart so that the work I have commenced with the community is not lost and what I have learned can be passed on for the benefit of the people.

I would sincerely like to thank the people in the Gympie Region and the Mary Valley for entrusting me with their issues, dreams and hopes for the past eight years on both the Cooloola Shire Council and the new Gympie Regional Council. It has been an honour to work with the many communities, people and businesses that I have been associated with. I do not intend to walk away from my community and if I can help any new or continuing councillor in the future, they only need ask. It is not a matter of rivalry; it is about working together for the benefit of the region and its people, but MOST importantly working WITH the people. Cr Jan Watt

Cr Tatton not standing for re-election

T

he division 10 councillor, Paul Tatton, who holds the Service Delivery portfolio, announced today that he will not to stand for re-election at the local government election to be

held on 28 April. Cr Tatton said after much consideration he has decided to stand down from “public life”. “This has been a difficult decision to make, and I have had to consider a number of issues before arriving at this point,” Cr Tatton said. “My health and personal circumstances have changed over the past two years and I have decided that now is the right time to seek a new direction.” Cr Tatton said he was pleased with the many diverse projects he had accomplished since first being elected as a councillor in 1998, despite the many challenges that local government has had to manage along the way. “The work load has been very heavy, but I am very proud of what I have been able to achieve in my 28 years in local government - 14 years as a council officer and 14 years as a councillor. “It has been a pleasure representing the Nambour, Yandina, Eumundi, Kenilworth and Mapleton communities.” Cr Paul Tatton

OUR COMMUNITY Medicine from our Gardens

T

his week in my garden I noticed tiny spears of asparagus popping up, and at the same time the price dropped in the supermarkets! I love this time of year as asparagus visits us again, as it’s one of my favourite vegetables, which is often overlooked on a medicinal level. If you haven’t tried growing asparagus, you really should, as it’s low maintenance and constantly produces during both spring and autumn.

Asparagus has been found to be a very effective diuretic agent, which means it increases urinary output, helping to stimulate and flush out the kidneys. (Many of us will be familiar with the distinctive “asparagus pee” smell, which is only the result of metabolites produced while the kidneys flush out the toxins). This stimulation helps to rid the body of other excess fluids, lessening bloating and increasing detoxification. Asparagus is also currently being investigated, with very positive results, as an antiinflammatory agent. Inflammation in the body is regarded as being the cause of a huge number of diseases, with conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, digestive disorders (e.g. Irritable Bowl Syndrome and Crohns disease), as well as many allergies, being only the tip of the iceberg. Continuing on with the list of properties which this superfood has, it has been found to help in the controlling of insulin levels, which means it is very important to include in the dietary control of diabetes. It contains inulin, which helps to increase “good bacteria” in the gut, aiding digestion and particularly helping with conditions such as Candida. Asparagus is very important for the heart as it helps to lower blood pressure and to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. Finally, but possibly most importantly, asparagus is reputed to be a powerful aphrodisiac! Need I say more!

some fresh rosemary. 3. Cook in a medium oven for ½ hour. 4. Add the capsicums which has been cut into large chunks and cook for another ½ hour. 5. Finally add the most tender vegetables: asparagus, zucchini, cherry tomatoes. Drizzle with more oil if necessary, and toss well. 6. Cook for approximately 10 minutes more, or until the vegetables are just tender. Enjoy! Kindly submitted by Gabby Scott, Belli Park chef and naturopath.

GABION MAKING Workshop

he Noosa District Landcare Showcase Garden is under construction following finalisation of the design at the Community Garden Design Workshops. Thanks to participants who have contributed so much! Have you always wanted to make a gabion? Gabions are landscape structures and walls consisting of rock filled cages, and used to great effect in contemporary gardens. They are quite easy to build. Two gabions are to be installed in the Showcase Garden and will be used to showcase local epiphytes, in particular king orchids. Join our workshop where the two gabions will be constructed, and learn how to make one. It is on Saturday 7 April from 8.30am at Noosa Landcare Showcase Garden, Station Street, Pomona. Morning tea will be provided. For booking call 5485 2468.

Hypnosis gastric banding has shown in UK trials to have a 95% success rate to help lose weight safely and without costly surgery. It is currently being considered as a cost effective alternative to the actual procedure by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). In 2011 a Sunshine Coast Hypnotherapy practice has confirmed results with 20 Sunshine Coast volunteers taking part in a ‘Hypnosis Gastric Band trial with a total weight reduction of nearly 80kg in just four weeks’ and now the program is being launched in Gympie. The leading Clinical Hypnotherapist who conducted the program, Maggie Wilde has trained two local Hypnotherapists from the Gympie Region (Kathy Rochford and Robyn Clifford) to run the program with her.

It also improves self confidence and self belief “When people on the program begin to lose weight it also tends to have an enormous positive impact on overall confidence and health too. It can even positively impact whole family’s eating patterns.” Maggie Wilde said. The results of trials so far have shown 24 out of 25 UK men and women and a further 9 out of 10 participants in a second trial that took place in a Medical Surgery in the UK lost up to 11 pounds (approx 5 kg) in the first week and 1-2 pounds (500gms to 1kg) per week thereafter.
