KENILWORTH After School Fun with a Splash!

enilworth State Community College students have enjoyed another term of Active After School Communities fun. This term a team of parents have assisted our Chaplain, Boyd Eime in running the program three afternoons a week for seven weeks. Thanks to funding from the Australian Sports Commission, the students have enjoyed athletics fun, swimming for juniors and underwater hockey this term. The college is fortunate to have several parents who lead the activities and three more have recently completed their training. The Active After School Communities program uses the play for life philosophy to assist children to develop skills used in various sports in a fun way, so that they may later join a community club or team. Kenilworth SCC students are keen participants as the photo of the underwater hockey players illustrates. They are eager to see what activities are on offer in Term 2!

Official and Unofficial Dressage was held at Buderim on 19 March, Caitlyn Boon placed 2nd overall in the 10 years and under riding BB. Jessie Falconer placed 10th overall on Sir Walter and 5th overall in the unofficial class on Just Jack. Community Filmmaking What’s it all about?

t’s about using today’s amazing digital technology to capture and preserve our Australian heritage and way of life. It’s about capturing, celebrating and preserving the work of enterprising and very talented people in our communities today. It’s about telling the story and supporting communities under stress. It’s about you learning new creative skills in simple digital technology that will give you - as a video filmmaker - great satisfaction and reward.

It’s about you playing a very important role in preserving our social history now and in the future, from using simple techniques of photojournalism to document your family history, to video filming a major event in your community for future promotion or historical record. Whatever your interests are, anyone can learn the skills and do it well. But digital technology is a double edged sword. As a creative tool it’s brilliant, but for long term storage, it’s not recommended. We live in a highly computerised “throw away society” a society where technology is developing so quickly that yesterday’s programmes won’t work with tomorrow’s new gadgets. So, unless we capture and carefully organise the preservation of todays social history, in 50 years or less, few records will survive of our lifetime – and we lost all our videos and the photos too, when the harddrive crashed.

The aim of Community Filmmaking is to capture the “living images” of our past, present and future, and ensure their archival preservation. These are pictures with a purpose, and creating and preserving pictures with a purpose = a life with a purpose. Learn to do it well! KENILWORTH R.S.L. SUB-BRANCH NEWSLETTER

ur last meeting on the 14 March turned out to be one of talking as there were only four members. Not enough to form a quorum. There were two other people at the start of the meeting who want to join the R.S.L., but as they are not ex-service personel, the committee asked them if they would like to create an R.S.L. Auxillary Committee. So at our next meeting on Monday 11 April, we would like any local people that would like to join the auxillary part of the Kenilworth R.S.L. to come to that meeting. Especially with ANZAC Day coming up on the Easter Monday of the Easter long weekend, we are not sure how many people will actually be there. But hopefully with our committee and the Auxillary committee, the ANZAC Day routine will be the same as last year, but maybe half an hour later than usual. Also if it happens to be a raining sort of day, a wet weather routine will be held in our R.S.L. room or maybe upstairs in the main hall room, also depending on how many people turn up on the day. Brian Porter has established this business over the last 10 years and now is looking forward to a well-earned break. As of the 1 April 2011 my wife Kym and I will be taking over as Kenilworth Rural Supplies. I have worked in the outdoor power industry for the past 20 years, and am a qualified small engine mechanic. As well as continuing to supply the great range Brian has offered, we will be stocking a full range of outdoor power equipment, and opening a repair workshop for small engines. We are confident this will complement the existing business as well as supplying a much needed service to the area. Both Kym and I are looking forward to being in business in Kenilworth and are excited at the opportunities to expand into new products. KENILWORTH MVV CHAMBER CHATTER

he year is over for the Kenilworth and District Chamber of Commerce and Citizens. Our last meeting is on Wednesday 13 April and the Annual General Meeting will be Wednesday 11 May 2011, at CWA Hall 6.30pm. Time to elect a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and a management committee. If you are interested in your community and would like to have a say, this is the time to get involved. The Chamber is proud to have had some successes over the past 12 months. The Cheese, Wine and Food Fest brought over 2000 folk to Kenilworth in 2010 and hopefully will do the same this Easter Saturday. The Information Centre and Craft shop looks after visitors. The toilets in the town park are on the drawing board to be improved. We did get an extension to the walkway out of town. The town clock is going solar soon. Both parks are still on the drawing board. Drinks on the deck was successful for the business community, more to come. A Mary Valley tourist map is being produced, the Info Ctr has taken out an ad to advertise Kenilworth, 40,000 to be printed. Remember the Community Forum held at the Bowls Club? The Kenilworth Futures Group has been quietly working away on the data collected from which a Vision Statement will be put to the community for comment and suggestions for the way forward. Work has already begun on some of the issues listed at the forum. Time to think about the future of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce. What is it’s role in the Kenilworth community? Does it support local businesses? Do local businesses support it? Is it more a residents group? Come to the meeting on Wednesday 11 May. Maybe it’s time for a role change. It’s worthwhile having a voice in community affairs.

Kenilworth Hall Show and Recreation Ground Association Inc.

ollowing the success of a grant application from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, new flooring was laid in the Kenilworth Hall during 2010. This comprised the exterior entry area, entry foyer, stairs and upstairs foyer, supper room and adjacent kitchen. Additionally, using its own funds the Hall Committee replaced the flooring in the RSL/Meeting room. These were just a number of improvements made to the hall which were highlighted at the recent AGM of the Association. A committee consisting Bill Morris as President, Cec Pearson Vice-President, Blair Meldrum Secretary, Clem Hassall Treasurer, Les Fisher Junior Vice-President, Tonia Murtagh Minutes Secretary, Olive Hassall Booking Secretary and Terry Murtagh, Lenore Meldrum, Doug Kussrow and Sonia Law as committee members was elected. Members of the public are always welcome to attend monthly meetings of the Association which are held on the first Monday of the month in the hall meeting room. The year also saw fans placed upon the pillars in the main hall area to assist with air cooling, coin operated timers placed in the showers, further improvements to the rodeo yards, and the purchase of more folding tables for the benefit of users of the hall. Installation of emergency and exit lighting is currently being undertaken. The committee was also successful in having Kenilworth recognised as an RV Friendly Location, a great asset to the township as it attracts more travellers to the area. The annual Show and Rodeo and the annual Christmas Tree events again were great successes, with Irene Symons and Tonia Murtagh being congratulated on their work associated with the latter. Planning for the annual Chook Chase is currently under way, such to be discussed in greater detail at the April meeting of the Association. Just a reminder that the annual Show and Rodeo will be held on Saturday 17 September. Volunteers to work at these important local events are always welcome. Blair Meldrum, Secretary

KENILWORTH Kenilworth Business Owners in 1930’s

ack Scargill was born on 27.9.1880 in Thorn, York, England, and migrated to Australia as a young man. He served with the 15th Battalion in World War I, was wounded on Gallipoli, and was listed in the Roll of Honour published on page 28 of The Queenslander 15.1.1916 edition. The marriage of Mr Joseph (Jack) Scargill (on April 10, 1917) to Miss Isabella Murray Luke of Eumundi was reported in The Queenslander newspaper 19 May edition, page 16.

The original premises on the corner of Elizabeth and Charles Street burnt down in 1946. In 1946 the couple retired to Noosaville. The Nambour Chronicle May 7, 1954 reported on page 9 the passing of Mr Scargill who was interred in the Eumundi Cemetery. Mrs Scargill passed away on December 26, 1962. This couple assisted in establishing the foundations of many of the community organisations in the township and their contributions should not be forgotten. 28 November, 1928 edition of The Brisbane Courier reported:Mr J. Scargill....after a long period in hospital was returned to Australia, with the bullet that made him hors de combat still in his person. On resuming civil life, Mr. Scargill suffered much from its presence and of late his condition steadily grew worse. Finally he entered St Martin’s Hospital, Brisbane where a delicate operation was performed, and the missile, which had lain there for 13 years, was removed. It was not in any way mis-shaped, but the nickel was somewhat encrusted with a sort of rust, evidently set up by the acid in his system. The Scargills conducted a mixed business at Mooloolah, where they lived with their son William. Sadly William received fatal burns, aged 14, The Morning Bulletin, 15.4.1932 (Rockhampton) reported that Mrs Scargill threw a blanket round him extinguishing the flames but not before he had been badly burned on nearly every part of the body. In January 1933 Mr and Mrs Scargill opened a café and store on the site of the Affordable on Elizabeth gift shop, complete with a wind powered 32 volt lighting plant. Because of the lack of accommodation for travellers in the township - Scargill’s was the place to stay in Kenilworth. A service car from Proston to Wondai stopped at Scargillls for comfort breaks and meals. Mrs Scargill often “read the tea-cups” for travellers – the leaves told their story. Mr and Mrs Scargill opened a second establishment at the “top of town” The Diggers Cafe in the premises now occupied by the Post Office.

TYRON SHAVES FOR A CURE

oung local teenager Tyron Blinco participated in the Worlds Greatest Shave again this year raising a total of $603.00 for the Leukaemia Foundation. The event took place at the Kenilworth Cricket Club, and cattle clippers were used to shave his thick head of hair. Well done Tyron!

The couple quickly became involved in community activities. Mr Scargill was elected one of four Vice Presidents of the Kenilworth Cricket Assn at their first Annual General Meeting in August, 1934 (24/8/1934 edition Nambour Chronicle p 8). Mrs Scargill was one of the first aid personnel for the district during the Second World War (Nambour Chronicle 30/1/1942 p. 9)

COOROY/POMONA PROBUS AT THE IPSWICH RAIL MUSEUM

t was ‘all aboard’ for the Cooroy Probus Club and friends as they journeyed south to Ipswich - destination the Workshops Rail Museum. The Workshop Rail Museum is a $20 million wholly interactive authentic heritage and cultural experience located at the birthplace of rail in Queensland. One hundred and forty years of history, fifteen larger than life exhibits, beautifully restored carriages coupled with the unique sights, sound and smells of the blacksmith’s workshop kept our members both entertained and enthralled. Those young at heart jumped into the simulator to test their skills in driving a modern ‘Tilt Train’, and a much, much older locomotive engine. e-amalgamation is a hot topic at present and there are many opinions on whether it is a good thing or not. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has decided to hold a public meeting so the community can hear more about it. Noel Playford from Noosa Independence Alliance will attend to outline the details about their proposed new Noosa Council. He will speak about financial details, structure and their new marketing campaign. There will also be a question and answer session after his presentation to answer any queries from the community. Also the Member for Noosa, Mr Glen Elmes MP, will be in attendance to provide information on how the proposed new Noosa Council would proceed through the State Government.

he Stags are at it again this year. The second game of the year will be on Saturday 9 April at Kilcoy against Beachmere, will be one to look forward to as we have not travelled to Kilcoy before. The third round will be played on Sunday 17 April at Kawana against Kawana.

BUSH TUCKER LUNCH AT QUINLANS

uinlans is a beautiful and pristine 100 acre property, that was bequeathed to the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) by Peter and Julanne Quinlan. It lies in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, at Gheerulla and is testimony to the Quinlans and their passion for conservation.

A Bush Tucker Lunch is being held at Quinlans. The renown local bush tucker chef, Peter Wolfe, will be onsite preparing and cooking a sumptuous degustation menu, using fresh, local produce. The lunch will be held on Sunday 17 April. It starts at 11.00am, with Billy Tea and damper served upon arrival, a walking tour of Quinlans and lunch served at 1.00pm. The event will wrap up at 3.30pm. The lunch is the brainchild of AKF CEO Deborah Tabart OAM. She wanted to incorporate a unique introduction to Quinlans and demonstrate that how we grow our food and how using food grown locally and endemically to the region, is one aspect of living sustainably. Quinlans has just recently planted its own Bush Tucker Orchard, so it will also be a ‘taste of things’ to come. Cost is $85 p/p. Booking before 8 April. Science Spectacular at Cooran State School

tudents at Cooran State School have been working scientifically with our resident “Science Spark” all year. This year Science has been a priority at Cooran with all teachers attending training in the inquiry approach to teaching Science as well as the employment of a “Science Spark” to support the teachers in the teaching of science.

The students have also completed a science literacy activity where they were required to use cartoon information to construct a timeline of Alessandro Volta’s life. Students have used the “It’s Electrifying” Learning Pathway within Education Queensland’s Learning Place. Here, the students have accessed a number of fantastic online interactive resources to help consolidate their learning. Some students have even completed an online activity where they were required to complete the lighting electrical circuit for a rock concert! Students have been given the access key number to enable them to continue on with their learning (at their own pace) from any location in the world. Year 5/6 students have been learning more about microorganisms as part of their “Marvellous Microorganisms” unit. They have conducted a number of experiments to investigate the conditions needed for yeast to be active and therefore produce gas. The students were amazed to watch the balloons inflate during the day. Students have made predictions and are starting to learn how to write a hypothesis. These practical activities have involved the use of cooperative learning roles, such as director, manager and speaker. Effective teamwork skills are highly valued in today’s society and working in practical groups gives the students practice as fulfilling the expectations of a particular role. The students have also accessed some ICT resources which enabled them to identify the areas where mould and other microorganisms were found in an average house. Students have discovered that not all microorganisms are harmful to humans. Year 4/5 students have done some great work within their “Spinning in Space” unit. They have played a game, not surprisingly called “Spinning in Space” where the students followed instructions by physically acting out the difference between ‘orbit’ and ‘rotate’ (spin). When ‘spinning in space’ was called out, the students were required to orbit and rotate at the same time – quite a skill to master!! This game highlighted to the students how Earth, while rotating, also orbited the Sun. This was then followed up with a role play where the students were assigned a role of Sun, Earth or Moon, and had to move accordingly, by again, referring to the difference between orbit and rotate. ympie Historical Re-enactment Assoc. are a group of volunteer tourism ambassadors and have provided a very effective way of promoting Mary Valley’s golden heritage to visitors as they celebrate their ninth year of performance in style with ladies dressed in their finery with gloves and bonnet, gentlemen in their Sunday best, mingling amongst the growing crowds that embark and disembark from the train carriages and coaches.

The crowd starts returning to the re-enactment area of the Imbil Train Station to watch the unique and impressive firing of the canon and the second stage of the re-enactment. A cry goes out in the distance that the notorious and cheeky bushranger Dapper Dan has been captured and is the one to endure the public flogging.

The residents of the quaint country town of Imbil are reminded every third Sunday of the month, that the bushrangers have come to town! with their pistols blazing to rob the C17 steam locomotive, affectionately known as “The Rattler” of its gold shipment. Her Majesty’s troopers have failed for the last nine years to keep the gold shipment safe from the notorious bushranger Dapper Dan and his entourage who come to Imbil to restock with the stolen gold bullion and replenish with top shelf rum, before fleeing into the dense scrub. The visitors to the region are treated to an 1860’s encounter of a train robbery re-enactment before exploring the townships regular Sunday markets, quaint cafes and the local historic Railway Hotel. The Town Crier announces that the canon will be fired at twenty minutes after the hour of one o’clock and a public flogging will take place at fifteen minutes before the hour of two o’clock. A couple of miscreants are also punished by being put into the pillory and stocks and publicly humiliated. The Gympie Historical Re-enactment Association’s publicity officer and Chinese market gardner, Tanya Easterby puts her rice bowl and chop sticks aside amongst the locally grown produce utilised during the performance to tell us that there is currently twenty members with some new members representing a banker, newspaper editor and school teacher. The small group of volunteers formed in 2002 when the late George Reid and his wife Del assembled a group of friends to ‘hold up’ the historic steam train. The late George Reid is a sixth generation convict, his great grandfather was a coachman and his great grandmother was a maid for Queen Victoria. Original members of the re-enactment group speak fondly of gentleman George whose legacy continues to entertain and educate many visitors about the region’s culture. “Each member takes precise care in replicating a character from the 1860’s right down to dress material and colour, hem length, pistol replicas, leather pouches and

EASTER monday HARVEST LUNCH

f any one would be interested we (my family and I) are going to have a working Harvest Lunch on Easter Monday 25 April. To qualify you have to come and help us pick the macadamia nut harvest ! We have decided to go non-mechanical this year. We have approximately 1000 trees. We don’t expect to pick them all but it should be fun and we can experience a social harvest time and interaction! Our nut trees are spray free and self mulching! For those who haven’t done this before Macadamia nuts are harvested from the ground on to which they have conveniently fallen prior to our arrival at the foot of the tree. If you are interested to come and join the fun we live at Coucal Farm, 105 Baronga Road, Cooloolabin 4560.

You can find us via the Yandina-Cooloolabin Rd or via Image Flat Road from Nambour, and then up English Road. teve Weis is a sculptor, blacksmith, painter, poet, experimental musician and well-respected art metal designer who has invited the Kin Kin State School students to be involved in a workshop that explores and investigates sound. Every Friday the Kin Kin students have been exploring how sound is made through experimenting with Steve’s magnificent creations. They then investigated how they could create musical instruments from a variety of materials. At the conclusion of the experience the school invited parents and community members to be an audience for the students to present their musical instruments and creations.

It’s Nearly Wood Expo Time and The Call is Out for Volunteers

he Maleny Wood Expo organised by Barung Landcare is on again and to make it happen we need the help of our fantastic members who volunteer each year for the numerous tasks required to get this show on the road. The Wood Expo is the biggest event of the year for Barung and has continued to grow over the last fourteen years. We are anticipating a twenty percent increase on ticket sales this year as well as an increase in the number of businesses and organisations that will be exhibiting over the May Labour Day weekend (30 April and 1st May, 2011). The main task currently at hand is to recruit and co-ordinate the volunteers that are critical to the event. There are various areas that require your valuable contribution, including entry ticket selling, supervising parking, cooking at the BBQ, selling raffle tickets and many more. Any contribution you can make to your organisation’s premier event for the year will (as always) be greatly appreciated. If you are a new member of Barung or a new arrival to the Maleny area, this is a great opportunity for you to get involved in landcare and the local community. Sunshine Coast Storytime The Sunshine Coast’s rst Storytime is taking place at libraries across the region on Tuesday 12 April and Wednesday 13 April. All local schools, pre-schools and child care centres are encouraged to join in the reading of Josh Gets Lost. The book is written and illustrated by local author and artist Peter Rowe. owlers awarded for fundraising efforts When members of the Kenilworth Bowls Club decide to help a family in crisis they certainly pull out all stops to achieve their goals - and I was very pleased to present this generous team with a Community Service Award to say thanks (see photo below). Congratulations goes to the fundraising committee at the Kenilworth Bowls Club, to all of their able helpers and to the many people who contributed so generously to help Lockyer Valley flood victims Matthew and Stacy Keep get back on their feet.

New P&C team on board at Kenilworth College It was great to go back to my old school, the Kenilworth Community College, and chair the P&C election of officebearers for a new committee for the school. Congratulations to out-going president Marcus Ansty and his team, and welcome to the new committee: president Cynthia Henderson; vice president Sue Hopkins; treasurer Jo Bell; and secretary Carly Scott. It is great to see a keen new team of young parents putting up their hands for the P&C, and already planning future fund-raising activities. Obi Obi Road reopened The Obi Obi Road is open to one lane of traffic since Monday 28 March 2011. (see photo below)

The club made a generous presentation of $18,000 to the Keeps, their ‘adopted family’, who were overwhelmed with the generous support of strangers.

Work is continuing on the landslip that forced the closing of the road at Cochrane’s Crossing but motorists will be able to use one land of the road.

The funds were raised through a series of raffles, barefoot bowls, fun food events, an auction and donations. Additional donations were also made direct to this adopted family.

A huge landslip closed the road last March and since then the Department of Main Roads has worked hard to get the road opened to traffic. A 40kms speed limit will apply for this section of road and traffic will be controlled by traffic controllers during the day and traffic signals at night. There will be occasional delays of up to 15 minutes during the day to allow construction works to continue. Traffic controls will stay until the road is completed hopefully in mid-2011 at a cost of $7million.
