s you would undoubtedly have noticed, the annual Kenilworth Chook Chase took place this year over the weekend of 27 and 28 July, and the Committee are proud to advise that as, in previous years, it was a terrific success. This annual event, which continues to grow in popularity each time it is held, with entrants eager to secure their place early once nominations open, brings dedicated bike riders into our township. With 325 main track entrants and numerous junior riders each of the two days, the atmosphere was again full of fellowship and exhilaration. Thankfully the weather held fine, with the wet in the preceding days making for an excellent ride. The camaraderie which is enjoyed is one of the main reasons enthusiasts are eager to register for the event, together with plenty of off-road activity over pre-defined tracks provided through the forestry and made available through the generous support and collaboration of Forestry Plantations Queensland and Department of Environment and Resource Management. Without their cooperation and assistance the event would not be possible, and we extend our thanks to them for once again working with the Chook Chase Committee. Much praise must go to the consortium of volunteers who generously gave of their time in many ways, and this can best be demonstrated by just a small sample of the comments received verbally and on the Facebook page of the Chook Chase: “Peta Lamb: What an amazing weekend! Thanks to the amazing volunteers and organisers! So friendly and helpful! We appreciate it! Also a huge thanks to all the fellow riders and campers - what an amazing sense of mateship I saw this weekend! Especially on the peewee and novice tracks! Loved seeing the ‘big kids’ there helping out the little ones (including my little girl)! Cheers to the Chook Chase! Looking forward to next year.

Richard Stroker: Awesome weekend thanks to all involved. A big thanks to the sweep riders on Saturday who assisted on the hard sections. You guys worked your backsides off. The sweeps who travelled from far and wide to maintain control and supervision of the riders, the SES who monitored the event, the Queensland Ambulance Service and Kenilworth First Response for their medical skills when required, the volunteers from Kenilworth Hall Committee, Kenilworth Swimming Pool, the Mary Valley Voice and the Kenilworth Pony Club and others who toiled over the two days. Then there are those who were involved in making sure the paper work was completed and attended to the nominations, and last but not least to you, the people of Kenilworth, for your understanding and friendship extended to our visitors. TRANSPORT AND TRAFFIC OBI OBI Rd

he Department of Transport and Main Roads is doing reconstruction work on the downhill section of the Obi Obi Road to stabilise the slopes and repair slip damage from the wet weather. With part of the downhill road closed, traffic is being diverted along George Wyer Scenic Drive as a single way under the control of two sets of traffic lights. Delays of up to ten minutes could occur so please take this into consideration when planning your use of the Obi Road. A compensation – the view over the valley coming down George Wyer Scenic Drive is breathtakingly beautiful. he Nambour Chronicle published on September 9, 1949 listed the following Kenilworth News on page 2. SPORTS MEETING Mr. G.B. Sutton presided over a well-attended meeting of he Bushmen’s Carnival Committee. Arrangements are well in hand for the 17th September when the carnival is to be held. Working bees to finish work at the ground were arranged for Thursday and Tuesday. HALL COMMITTEE Mr. G.B. Sutton presided over the monthly meeting of the Kenilworth Hall Committee, which was held in the C.W.A. room on Monday night. Those present were:Messrs W.E. Sims (hon. sec.), W. Boxsell, N. Paulger, W.G. Hassall, L. Tanner, N. Pearce, T.R. Hassall, J. Rowe, B. Sutton. Accounts for the work being carried out at the hall was passed for payment. The alterations and extensions to the supper room are just about completed and with the Apollo boiler that has been installed the kitchen is now a very convenient place for all catering purposes. FRACTURED WRIST While cranking a utility at the Obi Obi Hall on Friday night, Mr. Alan Chaplin of Kenilworth, sustained a broken and dislocated wrist. He was driven to Cooroy Private Hospital, where he was admitted The accident has put him out of the finals of the tennis tournament now in progress. TENNIS Results in the tennis finals played on Sunday were: A grade men’s singles, G. Laffey; men’s doubles, Messrs Wood and A. McGinn; ladies singles Mrs E. Davie. B. grade men’s doubles, A. Crisp and B. Murtagh. SOCCER Kandanga soccer team visited Kenilworth on Sunday afternoon and played a practice match with the Kenilworth team. Much valuable practice is gained from this team, as it is composed mainly of Balts who are working in the Forestry plantations. The Balts referred to in this article would have been European refugees who were officially referred to as displaced persons. The Australian Government agreed to accept these people in July 1947. During this time, between 6000 and 8000 men and women were employed in Queensland. The earliest advertisements for the Bushmen’s Carnival found were for the September, 1948 event (Nambour Chronicle, 10.9.1948 p 4). The Bushmen’s Carnival advertises a Grand Ball at night – if anyone has photographs of those early balls the Show secretary would appreciate a copy for her archives. As may be gathered from this article the show has always been run by volunteer workers. nother enjoyable Book Club meeting was held on Thursday 1 August with great discussion and yummy supper! The book was “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.

Set in Jackson, Mississippi, USA, in 1962, the story is woven around the lives of coloured maids working in white households and the relationships between the two groups. The story unfolds against the background of the rising demand for equality for Afro Americans. Yes, this is the well-known historical era of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks with predictable “master and slave” overtones but the novel is a real page-turner! We all agreed we just had to keep reading to find out what happened next, such was the powerful engagement with the characters and the suspense created by this clever author. The story also sparkled with humour that had the reader laughing out loud at times. All in all, a great read! There is also a movie which keeps pretty much to the story. Of course, we discussed the injustices of the then strong anti-Negro ethos in parts of USA and comparisons were drawn to the way our own indigenous people and the black-birded South Sea Islanders had been treated. A lively discussion developed around having servants to help in the house as several of our members had lived in countries where this was the norm. It was interesting to note that the relationship protocols between “mistress and servant” were actually set by the servants themselves and strictly adhered to. The book for the October meeting is “Sweet Tooth” by well-known British author, Ian McEwan. It’s a spy story set during the Cold War. Someone asked recently what kinds of books we read for Book Club. The answer is “as wide a range as possible”. We’ve read historical and modern Australian, British and American novels, murder mysteries, stories set in World War Two, funny and whimsical stories, biographies and non-fiction! A pretty wide range! Books we recommend include “Call the Midwife” by Jennifer Worth, “Longbourn” by Jo Baker (the servants’ perspective of Jane Austen’s Bennett family), “Mullumbimby” by Melissa Lucashenko, set in – well, Mullumbimby - where else? And “Killing Fairfax: Packer, Murdoch and the Ultimate Revenge” by Pam Williams. NBN LOOKS FOR ALTERNATIVE SITES AT KENILWORTH

BN Co has withdrawn its Development Application with Sunshine Coast Council for a proposed Fixed wireless facility at the Council depot in Alexandra St Kenilworth. This Development Application has been withdrawn by NBN Co while it investigates viable alternatives at Kenilworth that are less visually intrusive. NBN Co is grateful for the constructive feedback that we have received over the last few weeks regarding alternative sites. We will now investigate those alternative sites. We look forward to holding a second Community Information Session at Kenilworth to advise of the new proposal as soon as possible. With regards to safety, the proposed facility is transmitting a radio signal – the same kind of signal as radio and television broadcasts, emergency service communications, and paging networks, which we have been living with for generations. Licensed radio frequency transmitters, including the NBN’s fixed wireless communications facilities and commercial radio and TV broadcast towers, are regulated to protect all people in all environments, 24-hours a day. Contrary to claims, radio communications facilities are permitted within 500m of schools in NSW (and everywhere else in Australia). That is because the national safety regulations affecting all radio communications operate by placing a limit on the strength of the radio signal that our antennas can transmit. They do not impose any distance-based restrictions for the general public. That is why radio communications facilities are found in every environment – including in schools and on hospitals all over the country. All NBN fixed wireless facilities operate safely and responsibly, at radio signal strengths thousands of times below national and World Health Organisation (WHO) Standards. t has been some time since the last Postal Notes appeared in the Mary Valley Voice and we are happy to update you on the services we can provide to the local community. We at the Kenilworth Post Office have adopted the slogan “More than just a Post Office”. We try quite hard to expand the range of services that can be offered locally to avoid the need to travel to the coast and queue for long periods for service. With this in mind, Kenilworth Post Office has recently acquired a camera and printer to produce passport and ID photos. These can be taken on the spot and processed within approximately 5-10 minutes. The photos can be used to apply for a passport as well as for any other purposes where an ID photo is required (eg, shooter’s licence or licence to perform high risk work). Each sheet of ID photos contains eight individual colour photos and costs $16.95.

As well as looking after your currency needs, Kenilworth Post Office can offer you travel insurance for $5.00 or $10.00 per day, depending on your travel destination. We have Prepaid TravelSim cards which can be used in most countries to keep in contact with friends and relatives through your mobile phone. In most cases, the call rates are cheaper than using international roaming. If you are travelling, we can also offer a mail hold or mail redirection service while you are away. So, apart from the actual passport interview, you can arrange most of your travel requirements here in the Valley. Pomona Pony Club hosted their gymkhana on Sunday 4 August on a beautiful sunny winter day. KPC was again well represented with Caeli, Lana, Alice, Matilda, Bronte, Jodi, Rachael and Sonia. The sportsmanship and care these riders display for their horses should be commended. Trophies were awarded due to the partnerships of Matilda and Baronia Jimbo (1st 13years), Alice and Checkers (3rd 14years), Rachael and LJ (2nd 7-25years) and lastly our chief instructor Sonia and Mysti (4th 26+years). KPC Members recently helped at the fantastic Chook Chase, a great economic boost for our town. We thank the Kenilworth Hall Committee for organising this event that raises considerable funds for community organisations in our town and help to improve the great community owned facilities our town has (showgrounds, pool, multipurpose ovals) and to support first class services such as first response, SES and our own publishing medium, The Mary Valley Voice. Great job Kenilworth! Our next muster is on Saturday 31 August. Our muster includes flatwork with Melissa Flood, sporting and games with Sonia and Rachael Law, jumping with our visiting instructor and theory lessons in the care of horse, equipment and rider. KENILWORTH TO MAPLETON FLEXILINK UPDATE

he Hinterland Connect Bus Service (Maleny via Mapleton to Nambour and return) operates Monday to Friday but not on Saturday or Sunday. Kenilworth residents are able to access this service via Flexilink but trips must be booked at least two hours ahead. The Kenilworth to Mapleton trial will continue on Saturdays and public holidays if booked. The trial service operates on a pre-booked basis three return trips per day Monday to Saturday with a $2 single fare (adults) and $1 (children). Book by phoning 1300 511 163 at least two hours in advance. The Flexilink service is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council Public Transport levy. This is a great initiative but has one drawback. The service takes passengers to Mapleton on the Hinterland Connect bus to Nambour Railway station but does not always link up with the rail time table, either departing from or arriving at Nambour. An example – the train arrives at Nambour from Brisbane at 5:11pm but the bus leaves the station at 5:10pm. When queried, one bus driver said the buses were not intended to connect with the trains! One wonders why not! SENIORS WEEK FUN

During the week of THE GUTSY CHALLENGE, students will be coordinating a Mini Fruit and Vegetable Harmony Day and a Fruit and Vegetable Challenge (for those who don’t like fruit or vegetables). A food diary for the week will be provided to all those students participating in THE GUTSY CHALLENGE. As part of our fundraising efforts, each student who participates in THE GUTSY CHALLENGE is asked to donate $1 per day (that’s $7 for the week) to aid gastro-intestinal cancer research. THE GUTSY CHALLENGE provides Kenilworth students with the opportunity to do something good for themselves and those less fortunate.

s part of the health and wellness project, a number of Kenilworth State Community College Prep-Year 1 students have been participating in an “eat what you grow” program by utilising what is grown In the Prep-Year 1 garden and creating edible delicacies in the Home Economic kitchen. To date the budding gardeners and chefs have prepared Zucchini Slice, Carrot Cake and Tomato Relish to share with their classmates. With seasons changing, the garden has been weeded and prepared for the spring. All this has been made possible through the generosity of Kenilworth Rural Supplies who have donated fertiliser, mulch, seedlings, advice and encouragement.

KENILWORTH STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS TAKE THE GUTSY CHALLENGE

uring 2013, a number of Kenilworth State Community College students have been participating in a health and wellness project. A group of these students have chosen to support and promote THE GUTSY CHALLENGE, a healthy and educational fundraiser for gastro-intestinal cancer research, during the week commencing Monday 9 September. Students who take THE GUTSY CHALLENGE will eat two fruit and four vegetables as part of their daily diet every day for one week. THE GUTSY CHALLENGE provides real motivation for students to eat healthy foods.

MARY VALLEY Scarecrows are coming out to play

he Mary Valley is turning tradition on its ear this year with the annual Scarecrow Festival about to kick off on September 14 and will run until October 18! The stuffed figures will be popping up on country roads and busy streets for the official festival from September 14October 18. Registrations open on August 19 and scarecrows should be up on September 14. Categories are Open, Traditional and Child (5-15yrs). You can choose to make a traditional ‘crow or enter something extraordinary in the artistic category. There is also a children’s category for five to 15-year-old scarecrow creators. How to make your ‘crow: You can make a simple “skeleton” from two wooden pieces like broomsticks by binding them together to form a cross. Use a pillowcase or a pumpkin or similar for a head (remember that a pumpkin will shrink overtime). Paint a face and put head on the top of the cross. For hands and legs put a shirt over your cross-shaped frame and use gloves for hands or tie the ends of the sleeves so the stuffing will stay inside. Put the pants on and leave enough wood at the bottom of the leg to stake your scarecrow in the ground. Traditionally stuffing is made of straw or hay, but you can use clothing, plastic bags or even newspapers. Stuff the pants first, tuck the shirt in, button and zip the pants. Tie rope or twine around the waist to act as a belt. Stuff the shirt arms first, then the rest of the torso. Then accessories to your heart’s content. Mary Valley Men’s Shed keeps busy

he men folk of the Mary Valley are strengthening their networks and keeping their hands busy at the Mary Valley Men’s Shed in Kandanga. It’s a place where the guys can tinker with some machinery, try their hand at woodwork, and have a cuppa and a chat, according to shed coordinator Ken Ward. They get together weekly on a Saturday from 6pm, underneath the Kandanga Information Centre in Main Street, Kandanga. The activity has paid off, with a range of native bee hives for sale at various valley outlets, and the restoration of a dilapidated bingo machine for the Imbil Mary Valley Scout Group. The machine was donated to the Men’s Shed in a very run down state, with rotten timber and a decidedly worn-out appearance. The men completely rebuilt the unit and donated it to the Scouts for their Saturday afternoon bingo. Now they are turning their attention to a model train set that was also donated to the shed. It consists of a 3m by 2.4m layout on a table with several locomotives and their carriages, and the men are currently getting their heads around the running of the set up. Mr Ward said the group is keen to move out of the info centre and to find a big enough home in which all the activities can be done. “Once we have that then we would be able to do many other things, from 3D printing to wood and metal work,” he said.

Mary Valley Stags rugby league updates he importance of riparian health is the subject of a new brochure to be launched by Ian Mackay, Chair of the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC), at a Rivercare Forum at Cooran Hall on Thursday 22 August 2013. The highly informative Mary River brochure was developed by Cooran creative designer Liz Capelin as a component of the Mary River Restoration Stories Project, which is funded by the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country Program. As well as highlighting why riparian health is important, the Mary River Brochure also celebrates two decades of riparian rehabilitation in the Mary Catchment, and reflects on challenges faced and lessons learned. Riparian health refers to the health of every living thing on the banks of a natural watercourse. In the Mary Catchment, many threatened plants and animals depend on a healthy riparian zone. These include the Mary River cod, the Giant barred frog, the Mary River Turtle and the Australian Lungfish. The riparian zone is also important in the estuary where mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses stabilise sand and riverbanks, and are essential for many species of fish, dugong, marine turtles and migratory birds. The Rivercare Forum at Cooran Hall will focus on the future of river restoration in the Mary Catchment and the establishment of stronger networks to foster rivercare activities. The forum will start at 9am and finish at 3.30pm and will include a short walk to the federally endangered riparian vegetation community on Six Mile Creek.

he International Rally of Queensland will seek to repeat its Showdown at the Showgrounds opening– night show after a successful debut on the Sunshine Coast last month. The Showdown at Nambour Showgrounds on Friday 12 July attracted thousands of spectators to see top international and Australian rally cars, fireworks, displays and other attractions, as a prelude to a weekend of highspeed action across the Sunshine Coast and Mary Valley. Event Director Errol Bailey said the concept of a family night combining a Stadium rally stage and other entertainment had proved an ideal start for the rally, which hosted a round of the prestigious FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship. “Everyone told us the Showground was one of the best night events we’ve done on the Sunshine Coast, so we’re keen to do it again next year,” Mr Bailey said. “The flood-lit Nambour showgrounds were an ideal facility. Its internal road network, centre ring and undercover grandstand was the perfect facility for the opening stage of the event and we will be applying to the managers for a date to use it again in 2014 as soon as we have our own event date confirmed by the international motorsport authorities. With that locked away, we will put our efforts into making it a bigger and better show for spectators.” After the Friday-night opening, the rally also visited Caloundra, Kenilworth, Imbil, Pomona and the Ettamogah Pub at Palmview on a schedule of competition stages and stopovers across the weekend. The “Pomona Dash” stage on the Saturday was praised as one of the best rally stage in Australia. “This is currently Australia’s biggest annual championship rally, which brings an estimated $6 million in economic benefit and wide international media and television exposure to the region. “It has terrific potential as one of the Sunshine Coast’s major sports festivals and we look forward to working with our government partners and engaging the local business community more to make it even bigger.” Mr Bailey said. The rally was won by the 22-year-old Finnish Rally Champion Esapekka Lappi, driving a factory-backed Skoda Fabia for the Indian MRF Team. While the event was deemed a success overall, it was marred by a crash on the final day that claimed the life of co-driver James McIntosh and seriously inured driver Grant Brecknell. It was the first fatal crash in the rally’s 45year history. The 2013 FIA Pacific Rally Championship will resume in Malaysia on 23-25 August and continue in Japan, China and Thailand. The International Rally of Queensland is supported through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development Program as part of a growing calendar of events across the State. he Real Food Festival is on again in Maleny on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September and if you haven’t been before you’re in for a real treat. The event showcases a wonderful variety of food that Sunshine Coast producers, retailers and restaurants have to offer, and it’s a brilliant way to talk, taste and buy from them. There are a number growers from the Mary Valley taking part in the activities throughout the weekend and it’s a great way to show your support for the best locally grown produce on the Sunshine Coast. Recently I spent a wintry night sleeping on cardboard in the centre of Nambour with a number of other community members. The sleep-out was an organised event to raise awareness that every night people in Sunshine Coast towns sleep on the streets, in their cars or in shelters. Thank you to Suncoast Care for the support services they provide such as, a low-cost food co-op, emergency relief and soup cafes in various locations. Congratulations to the organisers of the different events that have brought so many visitors to Kenilworth over the past few weeks. Kenilworth was packed over the Chook Chase weekend and Ride4Hope is also set to inject new energy into our great town. With spring around the corner we have even more social events on the community calendar to look forward to and I want to thank the people working behind the scenes to bring colour, joy and prosperity to Kenilworth. An auction, for the sale of 10 properties will be on Saturday 31 August. There have now been over 170 expressions of interest (EOI) received from people wanting to undertake a business enterprise in the Mary Valley. The Tenant Purchase Scheme (TPS) closed on the 31 May with 109 tenants applying. A preliminary assessment has identified that 91 tenants are eligible to proceed. Grow with the Mary Valley - A statewide marketing campaign over the next two months will be instigated by the State Government to restore private ownership and economic development to the region, with comprehensive

print advertising in newspapers and magazines, along with several billboards on the Bruce Highway. Once again the Qld International Rally was a huge success for the Mary Valley, bringing thousands of people from all over the world to our area. The curtain raiser at the Nambour Showgrounds on the Friday night was also a wonderful addition to the event. My condolences to the family of the codriver tragically killed on the Sunday. Lake Alford Flood Marker - With funding in part from the State Government Resilience Programme, a Flood Marker (think of a totem pole) is to be erected at Lake Alford and will show 12 coloured rings fixed at heights that relate to historical floods in the Gympie region. A sign at the foot of the pole will provide information matching the coloured ring to provide other flood related info. Once again GR Council is offering the Free Trees for Rates program across the shire. There are vouchers included in your rates notices and these can be swapped for trees at Landcare in Old Maryborough Road in Gympie. Or, if you don’t want the tree why not pool the vouchers for one of your community groups. Councils Newly Adopted Town Plan is now online at www. gympie.qld.gov.au/gympie-regional-council-planningscheme. The plan has been adopted and commenced being implemented on Monday 1 July 2013. Each year our family has overseas visitors drop by during their six week Australian summer break. They love nothing more than several farm escape trips and thoroughly enjoy what Obi Obi has to offer. Both families enjoy having fun and devouring great food. Also high on the agenda are adventures down the Obi Obi Creek, a camp fire, motorbike riding, game playing and just plain old enjoying each others company. We had a wonderful “Kenilworth adventure day” with glorious fun at the Kenilworth park being the highlight of their trip. My friend’s daughter commented, “Wow, how cool is this little town”. Effortlessly voiced from the mouth of a babe who has travelled extensively around the world. In addition, my friend stated that in all of her worldly travels you can tell who the country people are. She says there’re noticeably different – in a good way of course. They’re more relaxed, like having simple fun and they love nothing more than being part of the countryside. Essentially, I believe we all crave humble grounding experiences. Keep company with those who make you happy. Even enrich the experience to greater heights and keep that company whilst engaging in nature. Here’s our delicious banana ice-cream recipe. Place four peeled bananas in the freezer and freeze overnight. Ensure the bananas are ripe i.e. my kids call it the “leopard skin” look on the skin. Place the frozen bananas and 250g frozen raspberries in a food processor or blender. On high, process until smooth. ASIAN FLAVOURED PUMPKIN, KALE AND TEMPEH SALAD 350g pumpkin (about ½ a medium pumpkin), peeled and cut into 1cm wedges • 6 small potatoes, halved • 200g tempeh, cubed • ¼ cup olive oil • ¼ cup white shiro miso • 1 tbsp red Thai curry paste • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 ½ cups chopped kale, stems removed • 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted • 2/3 cup chopped fresh coriander leaves 1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. 2. Cut pumpkin, potatoes and tempeh and combine in a large bowl. 3. Combine olive oil, miso and curry paste in another bowl. 4. Using your hands, stir 1/3 cup of the miso-curry mixture into the pumpkin, potatoes and tempeh, making sure everything is coated evenly. Arrange in a single layer on baking tray(s). 5. Roast 20-30 mins. Make sure you toss them a few times to avoid burning.

6. While veggies are roasting, toast pumpkin seeds and allow to cool. Steam the kale until cooked but still a lovely bright green colour. 7. Add lemon juice to remaining misocurry paste to form a dressing and stir through the kale. 8. When veggies are roasted, toss gently with kale, pumpkin seeds and chopped coriander to serve. ENJOY! A lovely elderly couple, who’d been married for 50 years, went to McDonalds to celebrate their anniversary. The man ordered one meal…carried it back to where his wife was sitting…and proceeded to carefully cut the hamburger in two…and count out all the chips so he and his wife had exactly the same number on each plate. As the old man started eating his meal, a young man sitting nearby came up to the table and said… “I’d like to buy you another meal so you can have more to eat.” The old man said “thank you very much, but my wife and I share everything.” The old man kept eating and the young man couldn’t help but notice that his wife sat opposite him, but didn’t touch her meal. The young man felt compelled to go back to the couple’s table… “please”, he asked the old lady this time, “let me buy you another meal so you don’t go hungry.” “No” the old lady said… “thanks very much for the offer, but my husband and I share everything.” The old man kept eating… he finished the rest of his half-burger and all his allocation of chips…and sat back, wiping his mouth gently with his napkin. The young man noticed that the old lady just sat there…she hadn’t touched any of her food…she hadn’t taken one bite! The young man couldn’t help himself…and went back to the couple’s table a third time and said “excuse me” to the old lady, “…but I don’t understand, why haven’t you had any of your meal… you’ve sat there and watched your husband eat and you haven’t had anything at all” The old lady looked at him and politely said… “my husband and I have been married a long time… we share everything… even the teeth!”
