KENILWORTH Vale Edna Purdon

E

dna Hanna was born on January 6, 1918 in Nambour, the daughter of Edmund and Margaret Petersen and lived with her parents and siblings Alice, Marion, Thomas and Douglas at Bli Bli. The family moved to Amamoor while the two sisters were still attending primary school. Edna contracted whooping cough during her early years at primary school. She recuperated from her illness with her grandparents Hanna and Alex Myers at Kenilworth where she rode her horse to school at Coolabine where Miss Elsie Ginn helped her to catch up on her schooling. Edna returned to her parent’s home at Amamoor where she worked at making cases for pineapples and beans, milked the cows and generally helped where an extra pair of hands were needed. When her sister Alice left her position at the post office Edna moved into her job as a telephonist and shop assistant.

VALE Arthur Edwin Tanner (Ed) 19/2/1935 - 6/12/2012

d Tanner passed away unexpectedly on December 6 in Melbourne. Ed was the only son of Arthur Tanner and the late Winnie Sims and step-son of Jean. Ed gained much of his primary schooling at Kenilworth State School prior to become a boarder at Scots College, Warwick. After completion of his secondary schooling at that institution, he joined the ANZ Bank as a 19 year old and served at Lutwyche, Tamworth and Sydney as well as Creek Street Branch in Brisbane, during which time he met his wife Elaine through the Presbyterian Fellowship Association in Brisbane where he was also in the choir. After transfer to Melbourne, Ed was one of the people instrumental in the ANZ Bankcard development process and did a stint on a cruise liner going to Asia where they introduced the Bankcard for the first time. He later worked in the Collins Street branch as a senior executive of the Foreign Exchange division and travelled extensively overseas, especially to United Kingdom and New York. It was from this part of the bank that he eventually retired.

On retirement he took Elaine on a world trip when they were lucky enough to fly from UK to USA on the Concorde. They lived at Warranwood for many years while their boys On her return to Kenilworth Edna worked at the Kenilworth went to school at Yarra Valley Grammar School. OUR COMMUNITY

T

Heavens Light Up to Welcome the Obi Obi Hall Back

he Obi Obi Hall has reopened. Opened on 17 October 1913, unable to be used by 2000 because of general dilapidation, then rebuilt and reopened after 99 years and one month on Saturday 17 November 2012 with an afternoon of ceremony and an evening of entertainment. A crowd of about 250 people gathered; the honorable Member for Nicklin, Peter Wellington, Councilor Rogerson, past residents of the valley who held wonderful memories of good times at the hall, current members of the Obi Obi and Kidaman Creek District Community Hall Association and tourists intrigued by the building and the assembled crowd. After a short delay as Channel 7 interviewed the Association president Steve Walker, the ceremony started with local member of the Kabi Kabi people, indigenous educator Bev Hand welcoming the members and guests to country, telling stories of her family and her people. When the hall was opened in 1913, there was still a Kabi Kabi camp by the creek bank on the big bend of the Obi about a kilometre downstream from the hall, so it was a good way to start. The president moved on to thank the many people who richly deserved it, Sunshine Coast Regional Council for the $50,000 Community Development Grant that met 17% of the rebuild costs, the builder Murray Peterson and his team for the wonderful job, and all the community members who put so much time and effort in to achieve this long held dream. Local farmer Jock Johnson, whose family property surrounds the Hall, spoke briefly but movingly, then cut the ribbon across the stage with a borrowed pocket knife. It was open again.

KIDAMAN CREEK

While many of the crowd moved on to coffee and cake, the old timber and tin was auctioned off, with some fierce bidding taking place. With that over, the musical part of the evening started with the sweet voice of Darcy Kate Collier soaring over her guitar on her original songs, then rocked up a notch with Range trio Janet, Kelly and Phil on a fine selection of 70’s classics. Meanwhile, much of the crowd gathered outside as darkness fell and the Obi Obi fire brigade torched off the bonfire of 99 year old timber. The crew from the Blackall Range Motorcycle club kept the aromas of grilling steak and onions going from the BBQ, selling high quality local product from the Kenilworth Bakery and Butcher. The members of the Historic Motorcycle Club of Qld who had provided an intriguing display of elderly motorcycles all afternoon now saddled up and fled from the gathering storm, which circled the valley giving a spectacular lightshow for hours before any rain fell. On stage, local heroes The Rain took over with their blend of country music with a harder edge. A link to their video shot at the hall while it was derelict is available on the Hall’s blog at www.kidobi.wordpress.com and makes an interesting contrast. They were succeeded by alternative duo, Free Like Me, for an intriguing hour, then Damien Barnes took the stage with his growling voice and such a full sound coming from one man, one guitar and a laptop computer. By then it was midnight, and all over. People stood around, amazed that this day had finally arrived, and saying, “Lets come back on New Year’s Eve and do this again” Yes, the long running old tradition of New Year’s Eve at the Obi Obi Hall has been revived, with music, food available for sale, fine company, and a bonfire to welcome in the new year. You will need to bring your own alcohol. Thank you to all who came and made the opening day such a wonderful success. We look forward to seeing you there on New Year’s Eve.

Mary Valley Inc. held their AGM and Christmas dinner recently and the guest speaker, Elaine Bradley, proved to be a very inspiring presenter, thinker and motivator. Elaine runs the Dagun Farmers Market and has just been in the United States on a Churchill Fellowship. She’s been conducting research into revitalising rural economies through innovative and sustainable means. Elaine’s a great advocate for the Mary Valley and I look forward to hearing more about her progressive work with young farmers in the region. At the Conondale-Kenilworth Disaster Management Group we talked about the installation of flash flooding signs on the Obi Obi no.3 bridge, Pickering bridge at Moy Pocket and Little Yabba bridge. It’s a sensible suggestion to provide locals with advanced warning during flood events. I’m pleased to say that council is expected to install flood height markers in these locations in the near future, let’s hope it’s before the next flood event.

OUR COMMUNITY GOOD SHEPHERD PRIMARY TENNIS ACES HEAD TO BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL

Education at Good Shepherd, there was high praise for the Good Shepherd team.

our of Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s best Primary tennis players will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play along-side their tennis idols Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur at next year’s Brisbane International Tennis Championship.

Dakota Brown, Cooper Davies and Jordan and Jessie Eckley, all in Year 7, won the recent Sunshine Coast Regional Primary School Brisbane International Tennis Challenge at Mooloolaba Tennis Club. The Good Shepherd team has now earnt the right to move on to the state finals, which will be held during the Brisbane International Tennis Championship from 30 December – 6 January 2013.

“The enthusiasm, commitment and hard work shown by the players has been very impressive and we know they will get a lot out of the experience at the Brisbane International,” said Mr Carey. Jon Porter, Head Coach at Good Shepherd Tennis Academy, was also delighted with the way the team played and will be concentrating on developing the team’s doubles play in preparation for the Brisbane International.

In a very close competition, the team was unbeaten throughout the day at Mooloolaba Tennis Club, and although St Andrew’s, Matthew Flinders and Sunshine Coast Grammar all provided tough competition, the Good Shepherd team was just too strong on the day. Dakota Brown was named as the Good Shepherd’s team’s number one player – having remained unbeaten throughout the competition. Good Shepherd was also the only school in the competition to enter two teams - with the other Good Shepherd team members: Bailey and Matthew Collins, Sam Haines and Jackson Mellish - coming overall fifth in the competition. OUR COMMUNITY Australian seniors learn to Dropbox on Chrome with NEC Australia

N

EC Australia has revamped the Australian Government-funded Broadband for Seniors website, a newly-designed platform for senior Australians to widen their knowledge of the web, cloud computing and collaboration technologies. Broadband for Seniors, a highly successful program launched in 2008, has provided training to over 250,000 seniors to help them confidently and securely use software to engage with the world wide web. NEC Australia implemented the program by installing over 2,000 kiosks at seniors organisations such as community centres across the nation, providing them with the tools to engage with web-based services, ranging from social media, smartphones and tablets, and photo-sharing services such as Flickr. The education also offers seniors important strategies to manage security, identity and information-sharing risks, including threats posed by malware, which do not discriminate between young and old computer users. The website revamp is part of the Australian Government’s $25.4 million commitment to the Broadband for Seniors program. NEC Australia delivers the program in partnership with Adult Learning Australia, Australian Senior Computer Clubs Association and University of the Third Age Online. The Broadband for Seniors program was initially designed to assist over-50s, with minimal experience with personal computers, the web, desktop software and web

applications, by introducing them to Gmail, Internet Explorer and document processors. The NEC-supported Broadband for Seniors has helped participants move beyond these basics, and that progress is being reflected in the new website and companion course material, which now emphasises collaboration, communication and social inclusion. For example, a Broadband for Seniors course currently scheduled teaches participants how to leverage a storage platform, Dropbox, with the aim of simplifying cloud computing and sharing files. Another course takes seniors beyond desktop word processing to Google Docs, emphasising the potential for collaboration, content creation and knowledge sharing. “This program positions Australia well in a global sense, with many countries focussed on digital inclusion policies to avoid the “digital divide,” in this case one based on age. It has been fascinating to watch the evolution of usage by kiosk users, knowing that this is just the beginning, with new technologies for both health care and social interaction just around the corner,” said David Cooke, from NEC Australia. Volunteer manager, Jim Walker, said twilight markets could be a possibility in 2013. Maleny Green Hills, Sunshine Coast Council and Barung Landcare have done a great job in planting 2 000 trees along the Obi Obi up Maleny way. Well done! Local singers in the Mapleton Community Choir brought Christmas cheer to the Sunshine Plaza recently. They were part of the flash mob giving a beautiful rendition of the famous chorus from Handel’s Messiah. The performance drew loud applause from the delighted shoppers.
