he Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce is continuing with the BBQ in the Kenilworth Park to welcome new comers to the community and have a chat with anyone who would like to join in. Kenilworth swimming pool news

he summer season is upon us and the pool is a wonderful way to cool down. Please note that the swimming pool will be CLOSED on CHRISTMAS DAY, SUNDAY 25 DECEMBER. All swimming lessons and Aqua aerobics, and box aerobics will finish on Thursday 22 December and resume on Thursday 5 January 2012. For the rest of the holidays the swimming pool is open 11am to 5pm daily. The kiosk is open and serves delicious food and snacks. Come and enjoy the summer season in the cool pool. The Kenilworth Swimming Pool committee and staff wish everyone in the community a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Swim, stay safe and have fun.

Kenilworth Book Club

ook club members met for their last 2011 gathering on 1 December to discuss “Five Bells” by Gail Jones, a tale set in Sydney near Circular Quay and the Opera House. Responses to this book were mixed, some really enjoying it and others with criticisms of story and style. This is what makes Book Club evenings so interesting. We don’t all agree and it is fascinating to hear other people’s perspectives.

KENILWORTH CHRISTMAS TREE

Christmas Tree has been the centre of celebrations for the people of the Kenilworth Community (now the locality known as Gheerulla) since the early 1900’s with the original Kenilworth School (later Kenilworth Lower) celebrating the end of the school year with a Christmas Tree and gift giving. Some of the gift books distributed to students in the early years of that first school in the district are on display in the Kenilworth Museum. Christmas 1950 was the first public Christmas Tree held in the township of Kenilworth organised by Terry and Daphne Cosgrove from the Kenilworth Newsagency. In his book ‘Remember the Good Times’ Terry Cosgrove recalls Santa had something like three hundred gifts to give and it was very successful. We were already planning for the next one… and had started putting in Christmas stock and taking orders from as early as August (1951) onwards. In 1951 Kenilworth had not very long been granted a police station of its own with a resident police officer. The sergeant in charge was Cec Bartlett, and he had been transferred from Warra. Christmas Eve, and time for the Christmas Tree… some of the men had said they would be taking over and doing everything that was to be done to get the tree ready. On the morning, which was a Saturday, they went out to the forestry and got a big pine tree and brought it back and decorated it with coloured lights and the full works and recorded Christmas carols. We had plenty of volunteer helpers amongst the ladies with getting the gifts out of the lounge room, which was half full with well over a thousand gifts to be placed around the tree ready for Santa. Cec Bartlett closed the street for a period and Santa arrived in Ed Sims restored 1905 Reo car, which was Ed’s pride and joy. The whole event was a great success thanks to the support of so many of the Kenilworth people. Santa has travelled to the Christmas Tree in a variety of vehicles – currently arriving in a fire truck – in 1950 by Reo car. The Kenilworth Museum would like to document the different “Santa vehicles” used over the years and if possible gather photographs and determine which years they were used. While we had different views of “Five Bells”, everyone agreed that the old fashioned charades based on book titles were a lot of fun! Maybe our glass of Christmas cheer helped us! We ended the year with a cheery evening with a festive touch. The next meeting will be on Thursday 2 February 2012, KAC building at 7pm. The book to read is “The Little Coffee Shop in Kabul” by Deborah Rodriguez. There are copies in Sunshine Coast libraries. Happy Christmas and Happy Reading!

MARY VALLEY Hinterland Bush Links launch and mega tree plant at Booloumba Creek

n exciting new project to connect habitat across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, was launched at Booloumba Creek on Sunday 13 Novermber.

The launch of Hinterland Bush Links was held at a property in Booloumba Creek Road in Cambroon. More than 120 people turned out to plant 700 trees and celebrate the launch. This planting is part of linking vegetation across the Mary Valley between the Conondale and the Blackall Ranges so that wildlife like the koala can feed and breed in new areas. Similar projects are planned across the Hinterland and interested landholders are encouraged to be a part of connecting the landscape. MARY VALLEY GOLF COURSE

oolewong Par3 Golf Course, situated at 63 Barsby Road near Imbil in the beautiful Mary Valley, officially opened in June 2011 after over eight years of planning and development. Originally a pineapple farm, the property was transformed from a bare area to now being a tranquil flora and fauna environment with the added benefit of being able to play golf in amongst this. Owner, Gary Walker, has designed and built this course with the help of his family and the odd contractor when their expertise was needed and has nine holes at the moment with a further nine planned in the near future. The course has been planted with native plants and some of these are suitable for bush tucker with the indigenous theme also incorporated into our tee signs. Those tee signs have a different name of a particular animal found on the course and will soon have the aboriginal names included on the signs as well. The course will challenge the avid golfer and entertain those who just want to have a hit and giggle and have a good time. Summer is here now and it’s a great time to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors and this can be had by playing a round of golf at ‘Koolewong Par 3’ gold course. We have an assortment of cold drinks, snacks and ice creams to refresh you before or after your game. ‘Koolewong Par 3’ has barbeque facilities available if visitors would like to bring their own lunch in our picturesque surroundings. Our aim here is to provide an affordable leisureable venue in the heart of the Mary Valley, so come and have a look at what ‘Koolewong Par 3’ provides.

helter is a staple of life. It is a base from which all Australians can participate in society. It is where our young Australians are raised and for most of us, where our retirement security is founded. It is fundamental to our future prosperity and wellbeing - as individuals, families, communities and as a nation. Yet we have a housing crisis in Australia. Many Australians struggle to enter the housing market – whether through renting or buying their first home. House prices, home loan repayments and rental payments have grown to such an extent that they pose major barriers to participation in the housing market. The more we examine the issue, the more it becomes clear that the excessive taxation burden placed on new housing is a major cause of both Australia’s undersupply of housing and the resultant affordability problems. The tax system has major impacts on housing supply, housing affordability, and hence the ability of the community to access shelter. The tax burden on new housing has grown substantially over the past decade and there exists an inequitable treatment of new housing compared to existing housing. A study recently completed for HIA (Housing Industry of Australia) on the taxation of housing and the results are concerning. First, the total tax burden on a new home in our capital cities ranges 36% in Brisbane to 44% in Melbourne. Of these taxes, in the case of Melbourne for example: • 34.4% are direct taxes such as GST and stamp duty

The types of taxes places on housing are highly problematic: • They fall largely on the homebuyer • The majority are highly inefficient • They can impact on labour mobility and hence productivity The CIE (The Centre for International Economics) study for HIA suggests that removing inefficient or excessive taxes on housing and replacing them with a broad-based tax would greatly enhance economic welfare. Indeed, it would: • boost consumption and production in housing • boost spending in all other sectors from money (expenditure) saved on housing • remove the current distortion and inefficiency in the pattern of production and consumption in the economy that is biased against housing and leading to an under supply and underconsumption of housing. HIA supports a serious reform program to significantly reduce the supply-side barriers which prevent a sufficient number and range of new residential dwellings from being provided each year in order to meet the demands of a growing and ageing population. As a priority, the need to fix Australia’s housing supply as a pre-requisite to several of possible taxation changes proposed. Remedying the country’s housing supply problem should get unanimous support from governments, communities and individuals. ave a safe and merry Christmas! This year seems to have flown by, starting off with the devastating flooding storms that hit Queensland during our 2010 summer season, and followed by a year of repair and recovery. Please take precautions around your homes this storm season, and stay alert when driving on our busy roads or when travelling to family and friends. I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and safe new year from Jenny and I, and my office staff Vicki and Wendy.... take the time to relax with your loved ones. To our many school students finishing for the year and the graduates who are already looking toward new horizons - have a well-deserved break, have a lot of fun with friends and stay safe. Retain Mary Valley land for agriculture While speaking on the Strategic Cropping Land Bill during the final sitting of Parliament for 2011, I again pushed for better protection of our farming land, and again urged the Government to protect the Mary Valley land purchased by the government for

the former Traveston Dam. Much of this land which is still owned by the government, is currently categorised as ‘management area’, and, as I stated in Parliament, I believe this and other good agricultural land on the Sunshine Coast need to be protected. Buffer zones introduced by Council years ago have not worked for our farming community, with residential neighbours complaints making it impossible for farmers to spray their crops. In Parliament I urged the government, and if the government should change - an alternative government, to genuinely look at reviewing this legislation to provide greater protection for farmers. It is vital that our government not just roll over to the developers, who seem to have the ear of the government and the alternative government. Our carers need Government support In Parliament I again told the government of the on-going plight of our caring community. I receive and everincreasing number of calls for assistance from elderly carers and parents who are very anxious about who will care for the elderly children when they are no longer able to care for them and when they pass away. Recently we heard about all the new money from the federal government for mental health and housing needs. I reminded the government that we need to at all times make sure that the funds are getting to the very people who need to benefit. I also sought some pre-election commitments from both sides of government to consider, prior to the next election, the needs of our Queensland grandparent carers. We need to do much better to support our elderly carers, be they carers for their elderly children or grandparent carers who do not want to see their grandchildren become wards of the State because their children are unable to care for them for a range of reasons.

hink shopping, think creative, think library – because this summer Sunshine Coast Council is helping young people set up shop in libraries. Y-shops are original and new to libraries on the Coast. Y-shops are run solely by young people, aged between 10 and 25 years with an interest in selling their original creative work. Shopping in a Y-shop helps young adults to develop entrepreneurial skills, build confidence, practice customer service and aid them in starting their very own business. Manager Library and Gallery Services, Ross Duncan said it is a great opportunity for young people on the Coast. “We wanted to help the creative talent in the region get their goods into the public realm,” Mr Duncan said. “The diversity and creativeness shown by participating vendors has been outstanding. “Y-shops are a great opportunity for young artists to test the response of customers to their goods while developing basic business skills for managing a business.” On sale will be original merchandise ranging from plush monster toys, mosaic platters and glasses, dream catchers, woven and beaded jewellery, pet ‘bling’ collars, handmade cards, fairy twig furniture and artwork. Y-shops are open Saturday mornings in selected Sunshine Coast Libraries from 9.30am to 11.30am over the summer holidays.

OUR COMMUNITY Positive Reinforcement Training

any years ago I had no reason to believe there was any other method of training except by the use of correction/punishment based methods. I was then introduced to a better, kinder, more humane way to train my dogs – Positive Reinforcement Training - and have never looked back. To understand why positive reinforcement works so well with our dogs I think it helps to look at the facts so we can make an informed decision in the manner in which we choose to train. Puppies are born not knowing what we perceive as good manners. They don’t purposely misbehave and don’t know the difference between right and wrong. Puppies behaviours are natural and instinctual and it is we humans who label them right or wrong. To succeed in training we need to view our puppies’ behaviours as desirable or undesirable, not right or wrong, this is the very start to training puppies from a positive perspective as we are looking for desirable behaviours which changes our thought processes to positive. We need to think in terms of what it is we want our puppies to do and create a plan to that effect. Positive training enhances our puppies natural trust and willingness. All dogs will repeat behaviours for which they are rewarded (operant conditioning); for example when a dog sits and is rewarded the likelihood of that behaviour recurring is very strong. Correct timing is essential when using positive reinforcement. The reward must occur immediately or puppy may not associate it with the action of sitting. Using Positive Reinforcement For your puppy the reinforcement may include food treats, praise, petting, or a favourite toy or game. Food treats work especially well for training your dog. floor, not at you. Small pieces of soft commercial treats, frankfurts with skin removed, cheese, or cooked chicken have all proven successful. Experiment to see what works best for your puppy. You can carry the treats in your pocket or treat bag. Each time you use a food reward, you should couple it with verbal praise in a happy tone of voice. Some puppies may not be interested in food treats. For those, the reward could be in the form of a toy or brief play as well as verbal praise. When your puppy is learning a new behaviour reward her every time she performs that behaviour, which means a continuous rate of reinforcement. Once the behaviour is sound, food rewards can be put on a variable rate of reinforcement and eventually phased out, to be replaced with verbal praise, a game or walk in the park, these rewards are called ‘life rewards’. By understanding positive reinforcement you will also understand that food does not have to be carried with you for the life of your puppy. By managing all the desirable behaviours, putting boundaries in place, with consistency from all the family we are setting our puppies up to succeed and not giving them the opportunity to behave inappropriately. We are being positive leaders which all dogs need. When our puppies behave inappropriately, a consequence needs to be enforced so the likelihood of that behaviour repeating itself diminishes. With positive reinforcement training we use what is called ‘negative punishment’ which is removing something desirable from the puppy, it is applied by ignoring the undesirable behaviour, not giving a treat reward, removal of toy , time out alone or not giving puppy access to ourselves for a short period of time. Owners should observe their puppies carefully enough to be aware of what behaviours are normal for that puppy. Understanding breed behaviour, whether mixed or pure bred, also assists in understanding your puppies behaviour. Positive punishment is applying something the dog doesn’t like such as verbal reprimand, scruff-shake, leash-pop, yank on the leash, hanging, alpha-rolling.’ Positive punishment fails to replace the inappropriate behaviour with a desirable one so puppy doesn’t learn what is right or what is expected from him. Learned helplessness can develop and it fails to support a healthy human- dog bond.’ (Australian Veterinary Association Training Recommendations, 2011) The use of positive reinforcement training is the most humane and effective training method, making training more enjoyable and improves your bond with your puppy. UPDATE ON UPPER MARY VALLEY DISASTER PLAN

he recent meeting at the Conondale Hall on 3 December 2011 was called by Sunshine Coast Council in response to community concerns following the January 2011 floods and the recommendation of the Queensland Floods Commission that prior to the next flood season local disaster management groups should identify community groups which because of the potential for isolation by disaster may require specific disaster management arrangements. The Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group has identified both Conondale and Kenilworth as two such areas. A dozen people turned up to the meeting representing the Kenilworth SES, the Conondale Rural Fire Brigade, Crystal Waters Rural Fire Brigade, Crystal Waters Body Corporate, the Conondale community, the Maleny Rotary Club, the Conondale State School and Emergency Management Queensland. Council was represented by Cr Jenny McKay, Alan Rogers (Local Disaster Coordinator) and the Community Resilience Officer. There were a number of apologies and attendees agreed that they would form the basis of a local disaster management sub-group. A range of issues were raised as being of concern to the community. These included • awareness of what to do in a bushfire • identifying safer places for the community to gather in the event of a fire • the need for better flood warnings • the number of small communities who become isolated as a result of a flood • the need for better communication due to poor telephone and radio reception and lack of good internet access. The following next steps were agreed: • The need to emphasise to everyone in the Valley to be aware of the potential risks from fire and flood, their responsibility to prepare themselves, their families and their homes for an emergency and to tune into disaster warnings • The need to develop an Upper Mary disaster plan which recognises the different needs / response of people in Kenilworth, Conondale, Crystal Waters and more isolated communities • A key component of developing this plan is to identify the main risks using local knowledge and develop both fire and flood maps • Development of contact lists and communication strategies both within the local area and with the wider emergency services and the Local Disaster Coordination Centre • Investigate options for improving communications • Local Disaster Coordinator to meet with the school principals to discuss how local schools would integrate into the plan. “It was a productive first meeting and the next stage will local mapping and establishing key contact points during disasters. The most important thing is that residents are aware and well prepared, and during the storm season please use caution when out driving due to the danger of washouts and damaged bridges” says Alan.
