e all know that Kenilworth is a great place to live, to have a business and bring up our children but over the past few years we have seen the Kenilworth College lose its high school and business moving out of the area and no significant new businesses replacing them. There has also been a steady decline in our population since 2001 especially in school-age children and people in the working age groups. During the past few months, members of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce and Citizens have been brainstorming ideas which might arrest this trend in the short and long term. The following are some of the ideas that they have come up with : • Eco tourism / convention centre • Cottage Industry “Hall of Fame” concept • Rural craft items • Local artefacts • Furniture manufacturers • Computer software development • Storage sheds for private use • A small Industrial estate with shed for lease/purchase • Handicrafts • Musical instruments repair and manufacture

KENILWORTH 2009 KENILWORTH LIVING LEGENDS RECIPIENTS

Many residents would have made their acquaintance as a result of her rapid response to medical and trauma emergencies.

enilworth and District Chamber of Commerce and Citizens Assoc Inc for the past eleven years have acknowledged people in this community, whom are nominated by their peers, to be worthy of an award as a Kenilworth Living Treasure.

Even before the inception of First Response Linda provided first aid at the Kenilworth Chook Chase, helped with canteen duties and fundraising, including the poets breakfast, cooking for cake stalls, lunches for senior citizens at the Kenilworth Hall, catering for local motor cross events and the showground Christmas celebrations.

These are persons who are valued by the community, have been of service to the community and generally are just loved by the community.

Linda is also a member of Kenilworth State Emergency Services, helping with welfare, traffic control and a first aid officer.

Presentations for 2009 took place at the annual Christmas dinner and below is acknowledgements of three people deserving of such recognition.

The mural in Kenilworth Town Park was painted by Linda. During the early times of the Kenilworth Arts Council Linda helped with the setting up of the annual art show plinths and was partly responsible for the ongoing success of Kenilworth Celebrates! festivities.

Following in family tradition Cec worked for all community facilities throughout his youth, the Lower Kenilworth State School, the Lower Kenilworth Hall, St Matthews Church and the Kenilworth cemetery at Gheerulla.

A vital and active member of the Kenilworth community for over twenty years, a founding member of Kenilworth First Response Group and involved continually over the ten year history with ongoing training.

The Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Festival includes a Farmer’s Market, cheese tasting, local wines and lots of food stalls featuring a great variety of take away delights.

The very popular Cheese Rolling contest for the young and not so young will again be featured! The Cheester Egg Hunt for the children with prizes to be won! KENILWORTH Kenilworth Cops Report

s many of you are already aware, my family and I have moved into the police residence adjacent to the station. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Kenilworth Community for making my family feel very welcome. In my role I am performing single officer duties working a combination of day and afternoon shifts throughout the week and the weekends. The station’s set office hours are 8am to 4pm every Tuesday. If you contact the police station and are transferred to Sunshine Coast Communication Centre, please leave your name and contact details and I will return your call as soon as possible. As always, in the case of an emergency dial 000. The Kenilworth Police Station no longer has the facilities to complete Driver’s Licence tests or any Department of Transport transactions. If you have access to the internet, you are able to change your address, pay your registration or infringement notice and numerous other transactions via the Queensland Transport website (www.transport. qld.gov.au) which is simple and convenient. For those of you who I am yet to meet, I took up the position in May 2009 and I am happy to say I’m enjoying policing in the Kenilworth Division. Having previously performed duties primarily with the Police Dog Squads within Brisbane, Gold Coast and Maroochydore in my 20 years of service. It has been a pleasant change working in Kenilworth where there is limited crime. When crime does occur, information from the community is of great assistance in finding the perpetrator. I am keen to speak with members of the community in relation to any problems they may be experiencing. ADVENTURES IN COMMUNITY FILMMAKING “Today anyone can learn the skills of Video Filmmaking!”

eople in the Sunshine Coast hinterland will have a unique opportunity to learn the skills of digital Photojournalism and Community Filmmaking at an exciting two day Workshop to be held at Kenilworth (Day 1) on 6 March, then the Project review and assessment (Day 2) on 17 April. Based on the lifetime experiences of Documentary Filmmaker and Photojournalist, Kev Franzi, the Workshop will feature not only the need to capture and preserve the stories and achievements of our past - but of equal importance is the need to capture and preserve today’s stories - the stories of talented people, of the special places and events in our communities - and the problems we face now and in the future. The problems of preservation in a digital “throw-away” society is also covered in the course. “Rapid change is the most dynamic force at work in our world today, and if we are to have future records of today’s lifestyle and achievements we must have in place an organised system of recording and preservation. There is great potential for a few people in every community to learn the skills and become ‘The Recorders’ of our lifestyle - yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s these are pictures with a real purpose,” said Mr. Franzi. Sponsored by the Kenilworth Arts Council, the Workshop package will include the “Action!” Kit (a two hour DVD and handbook), assignment and project notes, two lunches and morning and afternoon teas. The fully illustrated course will cover simple video production techniques for both Drama and Documentary production. A segment called “And Now It’s Showtime!” covers the many ways students’ work can be used promoted and exhibited. A special Festival of Short Films on 2 October will feature the work of community filmmakers as the grand finale to the Kenilworth Celebrates Festival. KENILWORTH NAMBOUR AND DISTRICT SCHOOLS IN SUCCESSFUL SPORTS DAY Caloundra, Kenilworth and Eerwah Vale Head Groups

o read the headline on page 2 of the Nambour Chronicle on Friday, August 8, 1947.

In the time prior to Playstations, Nintendos, X-boxes, video games, video movies, DVDs, CDs, mobile phones, personal computers, the internet, chat rooms, web cameras, iPods, jet planes or cyberspace the district school sports were the highlight of the school year. In 1947 Kenilworth students travelled to Nambour in Purdon’s truck seated on hard school forms, leaving the township by 7.30am in an endeavour to arrive in time for the 9.00am commencement. Headmaster Mr Harry Welch (photo top right) had trained the Kenilworth team for months prior to the big day - so the expectation of coming home with the trophy was high. There were few students attending any school in the district who did not play sport and participate in physical exercise classes. Schools were divided into groups, according to enrolment numbers. A Group included, Caloundra, Nambour, Maleny, Woombye, and Yandina. B Group consisted of Kenilworth, Kenilworth Lower, Maroochy River, Mons and Witta. C Group contained Eerwah Vale, Belli Park, Chevallum, Perwillowen Creek and Eudlo. Each school trained exceptionally hard to take out the honours on the annual sports day. Historical Note: Kenilworth Lower School was situated on the hill where Woods Sand and Gravel now operates. It was the original Kenilworth School which opened in 1900. Belli Park school closed in 1963 and was sited at 1248 KenilworthEumundi Rd where ALJULE Cabinetmaking now stands. The Eerwah Vale school also closed in 1963 and was on the rise Eumundi side of the Browns Creek/Kenilworth-Eumundi Road intersection – on the left side of the road. AUSTRALIA DAY 2010 IN KENILWORTH

hat an incredible day Australia Day 2010 turned out to be at Kenilworth Hotel.

The streets were rumbling with the sounds of V8’s arriving all morning for the first Annual Australia Day Car Show. The quality of cars on display was truly amazing. There were Fords, Holdens, American, utes, sedans, “Rods” and Panel Vans. We had cars that had featured on the cover of Street Machine as well as everyday drive cars. Even the children were happy when they realised they could get their face painted for free. The Fire Brigade were there cooking up a storm and stall owners were busy with their stalls. I would like to thank the Car Clubs and individuals who brought their cars on the day and a special thanks to Geoff Norris as it wouldn’t have been possible without his support. ustralia day was celebrated in style at Cooroy on the 26 January. Members of the Probus Club gathered for a True Blue Aussie lesson in ‘How to play 500’ delivered by an English gentleman ! Experienced players and beginners paired off to accept the challenge of trumping their opponents. New member, Derek Stevenson, proved too crafty a card player, winning the experienced players prize, while Lyn Pluck is still shaking her head wondering how she gained the beginners prize. We enjoyed a morning tea of lamingtons, the mandatory BBQ lunch followed by a fruity pavlova. Delicious! Great fun was had by all in celebrating our national day. The Community Kitchen offers a place to learn, socialise and have fun in addition to cooking and enjoying a delicious meal. This year, by popular demand, the program has extended to eight sessions. he Mary Valley Photography Club new website is now online and acts as a classroom, image display, and forum as well. It also has our calendar for the first half of the year and a “Hints and Tips” page. http://www.onlinegalleries.com.au/users/ maryvalleyphotoclub This website is for anyone in the Mary Valley region who wants to join and show off their photographs in the monthly competitions. You don’t have to come along to the monthly meetings, or attend our occasional weekend practicals, it is there to provide an outlet for all those who like taking photographs. If you are interested, I am asking for a small website and join fee this year a $12/person or $20/year per family, which goes towards the website upkeep, and if there is excess, some prizes for the competitions. Our Tuesday night meetings are held at the Mary Valley State College in Imbil. Tuesday 9 March at 7pm - Q & A, then lesson, low light and night photography. Tuesday 20 April at 7pm - Q & A, then lesson, portrait and family photography. February’s theme will be “Reflection” Here is a few “Quick Tips” you can use for now if you wish. SPONTANEITY - take your camera with you as often as you can, and if you see something interesting, take a few minutes to stop and take the photograph. Most unusual and really amazing things you see, are more often than not, only witnessed once in a lifetime. YOUR CAMERA - and lastly but in reality foremost, if you want to further your photography skills, it is important to know and understand your cameras features, so read your manual and experiment with the features. This way, when you see something that you want to take a photograph of, you will be able to capture it the way you want, without having to fumble around with its controls and end up missing the shot. e are in full swing and are in the process of putting everything in place for the first games of the season. The jerseys, shorts and socks have been designed, incorporating our 2010 sponsors, ordered and should have them by the 1 March. Insurance for the team has been paid up and we held our first official sign-on day Sunday 31 January at the RSL Hall Imbil. We will also be available for sign on at selected training days. The cost per player is $150 which includes: Club Membership • Registration (Sunshine Coast/ Gympie)• Issue of Playing Jumper (must quality-players with most games in team jumper qualify for jumpers at end of season – to be handed out at presentation night) • Issue of Club shorts and socks • Strapping • Death/Permanent Disability Insurance • Loss of Income Insurance. Training has been taking place at the Imbil School oval on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 5pm. Any prospective players are welcome. We have been approached by several other clubs for pre-season trial matches and have yet to confirm with them. There will a nine a side competition held at Maroochydore on the 27 March. Our first game will be against Yandina at Yandina on the 10 April and our first home game will be against Beerwah at Imbil the 24 April. We have five home games to entertain the Valley with this season so please come and support us and the boys. If you wish to become a member of the Mary Valley Stags it will only cost you $25. If any one is willing to fill the positions of First Aid Officers or League Safe personal (Water boy) please contact a club officials as there are courses running at the Sunshine Coast on the 6 and 7 March. MARY VALLEY THE ART OF PROTEST Gympie EXHIBITION

he exhibition ‘the Art of Protest’ is all about the ‘on the ground’ art used to convey opposition to the Traveston Crossing dam proposal. It is not about high art, but more the raw, immediate, responsive art that appeared on highways, fences, billboards, banners, bodies, and vehicles. It tells the story of a community response from the heart that sprang up immediately after the announcement from Premier Beattie in April 2006, and didn’t stop until the final announcement by Minister Peter Garrett on that memorable day 11 November 2009. The relentless creative spirit continued throughout the three and half years, sometimes heartbreaking, often humorous - it tells a powerful story of people who refused to back down! There were always new ideas, new tactics, new slogans and many events that reached out and touched a nation and the world. The exhibition ‘The Art of Protest’ will display not all, but a lot of the actual items, merchandise, posters, cartoons, costumes and other items from this era, accompanied by video footage and the music that formed part of the campaign. These items are now regarded as collectibles in one way, because they illustrate what the power of the people can do. To see a large room like the Gallery space full of these items will bring back many memories, but will also give those who weren’t as involved an idea of the massive campaign achievement at a grass-roots level. The exhibition will be on display from 23 February until 3 April in The Gympie Times Exhibition Space at the Gympie Regional Gallery. Entry is free. The official opening is on Saturday 27 February in conjunction with the Gallery’s Bizzart Day at 11.30am.

The Man and the Biosphere program in the Mary River Catchment

he Mary River is associated with two Biosphere Reserves – Noosa and Great Sandy. Biospheres are areas recognised internationally by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for their significant conservation areas and their aim to encourage local communities to live more sustainably. The proposal to construct the Traveston Crossing Dam raised the profile of the catchment, including the rare Mary River Cod, Australian Lungfish and Mary River Turtle. The Mary Valley Renewal was formed to make sure the community is closely involved in any plans to rehabilitate the river environment. In 1971, the ‘Man and Biosphere’ was launched by UNESCO to find solutions for sustainable development for humanity and conserve, through rational use of biodiversity and local cultural knowledge. An ideal Biosphere will conserve resources, species, ecosystems and landscapes • Economic and human development • Logistic support for demonstration projects, environmental education with training, research and monitoring. The Noosa and Great Sandy Biosphere areas have rapidly expanding populations and the task is to develop and share learning about the loss of species and it’s repair whilst improving social fabric and context. THE BIOSPHERE PROGRAMS’ BENEFITS More international contacts: Exchanging research with Vietnam, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland and the USA. Better scientific data: Initiatives with Qld Universities, funds for projects, and links with the United Nations Environment Program and involves overseas researchers. Increasing tourism: Overseas experience shows Biospheres attract more tourists. Developing new industries, i.e. Bioprospecting: Where natural chemicals such as coral reefs and rainforests are developed into useful products i.e. pharmaceutical drugs. More funding: An international conservation group has provided funds to help protect fauna and flora in the Biospheres. This includes a conservation assessment in the Mary Catchment. Developing a marketing brand: Produce can be produced and labelled under an accreditation system specific to the region to meet standards of excellence.

big hello to everyone from your first responders. We are currently training really hard and revisiting our skills to maintain them, as we do each year. 90% of people that die of a heart attack are not alone when they die. If you knew how to do CPR you could save someone’s life, possibly a loved one. We are going to be running CPR awareness nights for the community, these can be attended by all interested persons. For a gold coin donation you will learn how to be confident and competent in CPR. You will be issued with a certificate on completion of your short course (two hours duration). These courses will be held in both Imbil and Kandanga, on various Thursday nights in late February and early March.

Unregistered and unlicensed driving are offences for which we now have impoundment powers for repeat offenders. It doesn’t matter if it is not your vehicle that you are driving, it will be impounded for 48 hours for repeat offences and an application may be made to the court for three month impoundment or forfeiture for further offences. If impounded, your vehicle will be towed and you must pay the towing fee for the vehicle to be released after the 48 hours. It will not be released until the fee is paid and storage fees will be charged for storage over the 48 hours. Police have no control over the towing fees and these are set by the towing company. Police will not drive your vehicle to the impounding area. As of 1/1/2010, new legislation has been enacted making it an offence for a person to smoke in a motor vehicle, on a road or road-related area, when the vehicle contains another person who is under the age of 16. The penalty for this offence is $200.

From 11 March 2010, all children up to seven years of age must be secured in a child restraint. A child may stop using a child restraint once they turn seven years of age or their eye level is above the back of the booster seat.

Unfortunately we issued a large amount of tickets and also had a number of arrests for traffic matters. We are finding that there are a lot of people driving with expired drivers licences - most have only expired by a short period. It is an offence to drive a vehicle on a road without a current drivers licence - even if it expired the day before. There is no grace period. Queensland Transport sends out reminder notices to the address on your licence six weeks before the expiry date. If you don’t change the address on your licence, you will not get the renewal notice. However, not getting a notice is not a defence to a charge of unlicensed driving. Check your drivers licence and make sure that it has not expired. There are also a lot of vehicles driving around with expired registration. It is not a defence to a charge that you borrowed the vehicle. It is the responsibility of the driver

The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly has almost become extinct, so MRCCC have taken the initiative of growing and distributing the vines that provide an important food source for this butterfly, in the hope that we might be able to save this precious butterfly from that fate. fter the sold out 2009 rodeo, Saturday 20 February 2010 from 5pm will see the return of a good old “Bull Bronc Rodeo” to the Nambour showgrounds. The best cowboys (NRA affiliated), bulls and horses will churn up the undercover arena at Nambour for over four hours followed by the “Bad Habits” band playing live from 9.30pm until late. Organising Sunshine Coast Show Society President Jenny McKay is a strong supporter of these events that reflect the area’s roots and recently stated: “After the success of our 2009 “return” rodeo we are thrilled to again bring the rodeo experience to the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland communities and look forward to another wonderful night of thrills and spills at the Nambour Showgrounds. The undercover aspect covers patrons in poor weather but also makes for a thrilling high energy atmosphere.” The ticket prices are adults $20, $15 pensioners, $10 students 12 yrs + (ID required) and kids under 12 are free. Tickets can be pre-purchased by telephone booking on 5441 2766 during business hours and on the night, at the gate until sold out. rtists from Central Australia’s legendary Hermannsburg School are showcased in a major Queensland Art Gallery touring exhibition which has opened at the Noosa Regional Gallery on 4 February 2010. “Namatjira to Now” offers an in-depth look at one of Australia’s longest continuing contemporary art movements. Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said “Namatjira to Now” featured more than 30 art works
