Kenilworth Nonagenarian Celebrates Birthday

enilworth local, Fred Sandell, recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a party at the Kenilworth Bowls Club with over 100 friends and relatives from as far afield as Wollongong, Mt Morgan and Rockhampton. Originally the party was to have been on Fred’s birthday, but with the floods in Queensland at the time, many would not have been able to attend. This time the weather was kinder, and everyone enjoyed the day – with the opportunity to catch up with relatives and long time friends; the opportunity to tell stories of Fred’s past; the delicious lunch provided by the Bowls Club ladies, and the power-point presentation by ‘Raftus and Bluey Productions’ which provided an amusing photographic insight into Fred’s life. Fred was born in Lithgow, NSW in 1921, and moved to Wollongong at a young age. After his father died when Fred was 14, this enterprising young lad started work at the Port Kembla Steel Works as a junior clerk. He studied by correspondence and for the rest of his working life was a qualified accountant and company secretary. After a few years, Fred was transferred from the steel works to the Southern Portland Cement works. A move to Mt Morgan Mines brought Fred to Queensland. While working there, Fred met Jean Beattie, a Kenilworth lass, who was a music teacher at Rockhampton Girl’s Grammar School. They were married at Kenilworth Protestant Church, and their wedding photo is still on display at the Kenilworth Hotel. Their daughter Mirth was born at Mt Morgan, and soon after a career move took the couple to Sydney for four years. They returned to Queensland during the 1974 floods, and settled in Rockhampton where Fred was the Company Secretary for Rockhampton Newspaper Company, a subsidiary of Provincial Newspapers until his retirement.

“INFLUENCES” AT KARI GALLERY

he KARI Gallery is presenting an exhibition of paintings showcasing the exquisite talent of mixed media artist Noreen Flood. A new member of this progressive Kenilworth cooperative, Noreen is the winner of many awards, the most recent being the mixed media section at the Redcliffe Art Society Inc. Golden Ox National Art Awards with her work also taking out the People’s Choice Award. Take this opportunity to view the artist’s individual interpretation of the landscape using various mediums to create vigorous works which enjoy both paper and canvas. Inspired by the diverse ecology of the Sunshine Coast, the artist develops her artwork using many stages from freely expressed to controlled and focused. This new body of works is inspired from images, shapes and forms from around Lake Cooroibah, Queensland, where the artist lives. Each piece being a reflection of the artists interpretation of the human life cycle and the close connection with nature’s ever revolving cycles. The artist will give a short talk about her work at the opening of “Influences” exhibition on Saturday 5 March at 2pm at KARI Gallery, Main Street, Kenilworth. ust half a century ago at the end of January - the school year commenced in each of the schools in the district - Kenilworth, Kenilworth Lower (closed 1959), Coolabine (closed 1956), Kidaman Creek (closed 1959) and young people in the district looked forward with great anticipation to the dances and balls to be held.

There was always a Debutante Ball - run in alternate years by the Church of England and the Country Women’s Association, St Patrick’s Day Ball in March run by the Catholic Guild and in February, 1951 planning was underway for the CWA Jubilee Red, White and Blue Ball to be held in May. The Kenilworth report in the Nambour Chronicle issued on February 23 records that the CWA received a letter of appreciation from the Chamber of Commerce for their co-operation in all matters pertaining to the district. The CWA also awarded to Adrian Sutton of Lower Kenilworth School a scholarship grant of £2.2.0 ($4.40) after his success in the State Scholarship Examination. There were 50 books in the CWA library which could be borrowed at the rate of 3d (three pence = two cents) a book.

In Kenilworth news published in the February 16 edition of the chronicle it was reported that Kenilworth school was still without an assistant teacher (there were only two teachers at the time). Enrolment had increased and conditions were overcrowded. In a report of the Hall Committee meeting it was noted that Messrs Porter (Maleny) and Boxsell (Kenilworth) conducted their monthly cattle sale at the hall grounds. On page three of the February 2 edition of the Nambour Chronicle the report of the stock sale noted 244 head of cattle yarded. Fat Jersey cows sold for £17/15/- ($35.50). A red bull sold for a Mary Valley and North Coast record price of £35 ($70). The weather? It was reported that January rainfall in 1951 was 1826 pts (463.8mm) on 15 wet days. According to data on http://www.weatherzone.com.au/ Kenilworth in January 2011 recorded 19 wet days and 580.5mm (2285.4pts). The flood on January 31, 1951 reached 9.7 metres compared with 11.27 metres on 9/1/2011. Since February 2011, Lynn is offering a new home visit healing service in the Mary Valley area, specifically to make it easy for mums with sick children who can’t be moved or have no transport.

Jack uses only salvaged dead Australian Red Cedar timber rather than healthy live trees in creating his timber sculptures of Australian wildlife and native scenes. One of his works won the People’s Choice award, sponsored by Coolabine locals, Maureen and Richard Cooper, at the last Kenilworth Celebrates! Art Festival. This exquisite box featured a frog hiding under a waterlilly leaf, was greatly admired and ticket buyers all hoped that they would win it. However the lucky lady was a Kenilworth local, Yanni Henderson (pictured), who was absolutely delighted with her prize. The win was made even more special because she had never won anything before. ur Cooroy PROBUS Club celebrated Chinese New Year locally this year, welcoming in the year of the Rabbit. Both the restaurant and the patrons were decked out in red - a Chinese tradition to ward off danger in the coming year. Red is one of the luckiest colours in the Chinese culture, standing for loyalty, success and happiness. Du and her team at the Cooroy Chinese Restaurant coped extremely well with the large crowd ensuring all patrons were well fed and in great spirits.

NOOSA MUSEUM NEEDS YOUR HELP

he Noosa Museum is located at 29 Factory Street in Pomona. In its first life, the building was the Council Chambers for the original Noosa Shire. This remained its primary function for more than 70 years. However, over time, the focus shifted from Pomona and it was no longer considered the centre of the shire. The coastal areas had become more populated; more business moved there; and the tourism industry was mushrooming. During the 1980’s, the Council Chambers were closed in Pomona and the workforce moved into new premises in Tewantin. And so, in 1985, the building’s next life began as the home of the Noosa Museum. The Strong Room still sits in the middle of the building. Its huge solid door (complete with key) is covered with the signatures of all those workers from the last day that Noosa Shire was administered from Pomona. The original structure has been added to and today it houses a huge assortment of memorabilia. This includes toys, tools, Council records, personal collections, laundry equipment, fuel pumps, bottles, shells, and household items, as well as a vast photographic collection. Over the years, the Cooroora Historical Society has cultivated a growing relationship with members of the Gubbi Gubbi people – to the point where the Noosa Museum is the recognised Keeping Place of the Gubbi Gubbi and their artefacts. The Island of Reconciliation (in the park behind the Museum) was created for the ‘Local Symbols of Reconciliation Project’ - as part of the 2001Centenary of Federation - and stands in testament to the continuing respect between our cultures. During the last few months, the Management Committee has begun a fundraising campaign to help with on-going costs associated with the running of the Museum. A couple of Christmas Hampers were raffled during November last year. This year a car boot sale and sausage sizzle will be held on Saturday 5 March, in the area behind the Museum. A garage sale is being planned for later in the year (possibly in conjunction with another community organisation).

This is a truly beautiful piece of work, an autobiographical documentary by an Argentinean filmmaker who sets out to discover what happened to his father, who disappeared suddenly when the filmmaker was a child. His mother has always refused to talk about it. The film also provides an interesting visual experience of the city of Buenos Aires, its people and its culture. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COMMUNITY HALL

elli Hall is a ‘proud old girl’. She is an important part of Belli history and has hosted many community events over her 79 year history. Founded in 1932 on land donated by Sam Kelly, the Belli Hall has been care-taken by a succession of dedicated local community members over the generations. The excellent condition of our ‘old girl’ and her grounds is testament to their commitment to her wellbeing. As with many ‘good’ things, this hard work is usually invisible and largely unrecognised. So in order to acknowledge what it takes to keep her going, here’s a quick snapshot of everyday life for our Belli Hall. The hall is subjected to intense preparation before any event. This means that numerous tasks are undertaken to ensure the hall is at her best before the event. So the extensive hall dance floor is dusted and vacuumed and surrounding floor areas are mopped; the washroom and toilet facilities are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected; cobwebs hiding in corners high and low are brushed away and the kitchen benches and floors are cleaned to food preparation standard. Phew! and that’s not all! The hall’s cupboard supplies and crockery are then checked for restocking, which usually means a hall committee member is sent shopping!

outdoor work! All this, and the hall event hasn’t even taken place yet! After each event, the hall is subject to cleaning from top to bottom all over again. This ensures the hall interior is kept in good order between events and might mean a little extra ‘elbow grease’ is needed. As we all know, little accidents will happen! So any extra repairs are noted and arranged, as well as keeping up with regular maintenance. In addition the hall requires that her committee members meet regularly to discuss her needs. The hall is a hard taskmaster as committee members also contribute other services over and above general hall maintenance. These include processing hall bookings, keeping financial records, facilitating major hall repairs, general administration, keeping up-to-date with insurance and local governance regulations. On top of this, the committee keeps in touch with local issues so that the hall continues to contribute to the general community through fund raising events and the like. If this sounds like a lot of hard work, it is, but being a part of the hall committee is a great way of getting to know your local community while preserving an important local icon. Our Belli Hall represents all that is great about belonging to a local community; pulling together and supporting each other while having a lot of fun. ost people would now be aware that we have had a large number of traffic crashes in the area lately. I do not believe that we can spend more time on the road doing traffic duties but I am certain that other Police will be concentrating on this area for a while. Do not expect any leniency if you are caught breaking the law. The roads in the area seem to be a hot topic after the traffic crashes. It is acknowledged that the roads in this area are not as good as they could be. The Bruce Highway would be much safer if the north and southbound lanes were divided and work is continuing on this. Mary Valley Road could be improved in many areas. All this takes time and money - both of which are not available at the moment. The roads we have at the moment are what we will have for quite a period of time. 99% of the crashes are caused by driver error. Everyone has to drive to the conditions and obey the law. The roads are bad after the floods and people know this, so drive to the conditions. We often get the comment “you are only revenue raising” when issuing tickets. The simple answer is that if you don’t want to contribute revenue, don’t break the law. Anyone who thinks we only do traffic duties to raise revenue is welcome to attend the next fatal traffic crash with me, accompany me to the morgue and advising relatives and I will explain why we issue tickets. It is amazing that the majority of people in this area think that the roads are unsafe. The speed limit on open roads is 100km/hr and most people travel at or above that limit. If the roads are so dangerous, why are people travelling at or above the speed limit? Shouldn’t they slow down in dangerous areas? Please drive carefully and be aware of what is happening around you. All vehicles, not just trucks, need to travel at a safe distance (one where you can stop or take evasive action in an emergency) behind the vehicle in front. It is obvious that you are a good driver who always drives safely – just assume that the vehicle near you is being driven by someone who isn’t. The Dispute Resolution Centre, as part of the Department of Justice and Attorney General, has been established to assist people in the community to resolve their disputes or disagreements. Trained mediators are available to sit down with parties in dispute and guide discussions so that an agreement can be worked out. Staff and mediators do not take sides and their aim is to assist all parties to resolve any differences in a fair and acceptable way.

Mediation can be used for a wide range of disputes from conflict between neighbours (issues such as fencing, pets, noise or trees), disputes in the workplace between colleagues or management and staff, commercial or business disputes or family conflicts. Mediation is a great way to try to resolve conflict as it allows you to talk about the issue openly and with confidentiality, assists with helping you make a decision and saves time and money. ell, its been quite a interesting few months for many off us, with the christmas and new years holidays very short lived, because of all the floods, and cyclones, and all the chaos that comes with these events. I certainly hope that everyones family and friends came out unscathed. Unfortunately, as with us, i am sure we all knew someone who was effected, if not ourselves. And so, with a baptism welcome to 2011, photography is probably not a big consideration at the moment for a number of us. But, I have been talking to a number of people over the last month, and we have had a few thoughts on events, meetings and projects. VOLUNTEERs IN THE MARY VALLEY

t all happened at a function in Brisbane on Australia day, Heinke Butt and some friends discussed the flood damage to some of the farms in the Mary Valley, one thing lead to another and the next day Heinke had a call from her friend, Sterling Hockley who suggested that he could get some army friends together and come up to help for a weekend. They worked on five properties over the weekend fencing and clearing debris. Much was achieved and apart from hard work they all fell in love with the Mary Valley and vowed to return to do some more work and visit some of the attractions in the Valley. The men left on Sunday afternoon exhausted, old friendships rekindled and with great memories of families on whose properties they were able to make a contribution in flood recovery. n late January, a member of an army association sent out the word that the small rural community of Imbil would welcome a few ‘volunteers’ to help clean-up. Sterling (Mossy) Hockley, a member of the 8/9 RAR Association, sent an email to a few friends and from that email, he not only gained the support of fellow association members, but support from ex members of other battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR). These ‘volunteers’ all served in infantry battalions of the Australian Regular Army for periods between two to 30 years and between them they represented close to 250 years service to their country, but they were as keen as mustard to again serve a community. Over the weekend of 12 and 13 February, a group of 15 ex-soldiers and two teenage sons of one association member, travelled to Imbil and lent their ‘muscle’ to the community doing fencing and other tasks set by a few host properties. Although the work was hard, these ‘volunteers’ enjoyed the chance to be involved and most gained or renewed their appreciation of life on the land.

A PC FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

ot for profit organisation WorkVentures is making available PCs at a significantly subsidised price to help families affected by Queensland’s recent floods and cyclone Yasi to rebuild their lives. Affected Queenslanders are able to buy a PC and monitor package for only $195. This includes pre-loaded Microsoft software, GST and delivery. There is a limit of one computer per household. The PCs are all corporate grade computers and software donated by major companies specifically for this offer that have then been refurbished by WorkVentures through its Connect IT program. This offer is available to Queensland residents who have been approved to receive the Queensland Government’s Essential Household Contents Grant, which is an income tested one-off payment to cover the loss of eligible household contents. WorkVentures CEO Arsenio Alegre said that helping those families hardest hit by the recent natural disasters is the priority. “We have a limited number of computers available and so WorkVentures and the companies that have donated the equipment and software -- Macquarie Group, Microsoft, St George Bank and Westpac -- want to make sure they go to those households that genuinely need them.” Mr Alegre continued. The Essential Household Contents Grant may be available to people who: • own essential household contents that have been lost or damaged in the disaster, and • do not have contents insurance. “Queensland residents who believe they qualify for this grant can order a computer through WorkVentures at the same time as they apply for the grant, and then just send through a copy of the approval letter once they receive it. (the government will send a cheque in the mail) “WorkVentures will then prepare the computer and load it with Microsoft Windows and Office software. The computer will be delivered directly to the household, thanks to support from Toll Priority,” Mr Alegre said. owerlink follow-up I have again asked the Federal Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Mr Tony Burke to authorise someone from his department to inspect Powerlink’s proposed powerline corridor as well as the local action group’s (PAGE) alternate corridor. I contacted his office in November last year and have yet to receive a response to this initial request.

t is hoped that we don’t endure anymore flood events in what is left of our normal wet season, and I hope that all the Valley residents fared well over the summer months. I would like to personally congratulate and thank those volunteers and emergency groups who worked tirelessly throughout the event, and for their hard work and diligence as you all deserve a pat on the back for what you did.

Call for Telstra Tower I support the call for a mobile phone tower for the Cambroon area to service residents in Cambroon and surrounds where there is no mobile phone signal available. Several residents from this district have contacted my office regarding this issue. If anyone would like to add their name to a list of supporters for this proposal, please let me know and I will pass your interest on to the relevant Federal Government department.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Cr. Ron Dyne said, “the recent flooding and instances of people being isolated highlighted the need for prior preparation.” You are urged to ensure that prescription medication, supplies for babies and infants, battery operated torch and radio, tinned, powdered and basic foods for yourselves and your families are on hand to meet your immediate needs during and after a disaster event. Council’s website was well used in our previous flood event with over 12,000 hits in just two days, and I would recommend it for keeping you up to speed on current issues when in a disaster event. Also please note that money from the government for flood relief is not charity, it is tax money that you have paid so apply now. It’s a hand up not a hand out!

Obi Obi Road update I have received a number of calls from Kenilworth district residents who are concerned about rumours that the down-hill gravel section of the Obi Obi road is to be closed. I have been assured by Main Roads that there is no plan to close this road. Main Roads will continue to engage the Sunshine Coast Regional Council maintenance crews to maintain this road. Main Roads has also advised that they are planning on having one lane of the Obi Obi Road at the landslip site open to traffic in six weeks time. Kenilworth Village Units I had the pleasure of chairing the Kenilworth Village Units AGM held at the Kenilworth CWQ Hall recently. It was especially nice to be a part of this meeting in light of the fact that my parents were founding members of this group, and Dad was one of the early treasurers. On behalf of our community I thanked president Peter Jessup for all the volunteer work that he and his committee put into the units. The current committee was re-elected unopposed, and consists of: president Peter Jessup; vice president Clem Hassall; secretary Marcia Jessup; treasurer Blair Meldrum; committee members Ruth Dearden, Suzi Perel, and Jenette Franzi. It is very important to support those businesses and farmers affected by the flood so that we don’t lose them. Shop local and buy local is still a good practice. The State Government have introduced new pool laws so if you have a pool it is handy to check out the new laws at www.qld.gov.au/poolsafety these laws are much more stringent now, especially for rental properties. MVHR did a wonderful service during the floods yet again and are back in full swing, so what better time to go and support the business that supports the Valley towns, so that it can keep supporting us! ATO have offered to be very flexible with flood victims, so too are the banks, so it won’t hurt to contact them for more information if you were affected. Imbil Neighbourhood Watch - Rural, is registered as a ‘Clean Up Australia’ group and will gather at the Imbil Post Office at 9am on Sunday 6 March. So all welcome to come along and join in.
