Six weeks to go! Six weeks to a fun day in Kenilworth Town Park! The youngsters are getting excited about chasing down the goodies hidden in the Kenilworth Park in the Great Cheester Egg Hunt. And the adults have been honing their skills and flexing their muscles for the famous Kenilworth Cheese Rolling Competition. Our lovely town park is a great venue which offers shade and a playground for children while parents enjoy wine tastings, food samples and cooking displays. As one of last year’s festival-goers said,“The atmosphere in the park is excellent, the venue superb especially for those of us with children.”

At Kenilworth Artspace Gallery, we currently have on display stunning pastels by Lynette who specialises in nature works. You can almost hear Lynette’s “Kookaburra” laughing heartily. Lyn has also married delightful seascapes with engaging portraits of sea birds. Daughter Montana, or fondly known as Monti, has produced a range of delicately painted “Shanana Stones” which will help you regain peace and calm. They are truly little gems. Kenilworth people might remember Lynette and husband Craig when they opened a small art gallery at 25 Elizabeth Street opposite the CWA. It was always a pleasure to visit Lyn’s gallery with its diversity of art, ceramics and jewellery and now you can see her works and Monti’s at Kenilworth Artspace Gallery. 010 has started off smartly at the KSCC with the students all participating in the “Smart Moves” program. Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, the students start the day with half and hour of fun, physical activity. Research has shown that regular, physical activity stimulates the brain, keeps bodies healthy and helps learning – not to mention it’s fun! An added bonus of the program has been watching the Yr 6/7 students (without any prompting!) take the lead and help and support the younger students – just one of the wonderful benefits of being in a small school! ongratulations to all our members and supporters throughout 2009. Our annual Christmas Party including Presentation Ceremony was held in early December. A beautiful day was had with the younger ones swimming and the not so younger ones sitting in the shade of the trees at Charlie Moreland. The President thanked all members for the time, effort and enthusiasm during the 2009 year. Rachael Law assisted the committee in presenting junior members with their trophies and certificates. Certificates were also awarded to our Senior riding members who showed great enthusiasm and skill throughout the year. Recipients of the trophies and awards included: • Most Improved – Amy Loertscher • Quiet Achiever – Sarah Reardon • Best Cared for Pony – Bronte Law • Zone/State Representation – Rachael Law
Program with West Auckland Pony Clubs. Rachael had a fantastic time and provides a path for our younger members to follow. Over the next two months a number of Equitation and Showjumping events are held throughout the Zone providing an opportunity for riders to qualify for the State Championships being held at Maryborough at Easter. Good luck to all our competitors! Not only will our riders be busy but so will our social members and parents. This year the club has decided to host three club events; a Hack Day in April; Gymkhana in May as well as our Equitation and Showjumping two day event in August. The club will also be hosting on behalf of Zone 6 a Mounted Games competition in April. Watch out for this event as it’s quite exciting to watch showing demonstration of speed and accuracy in a relay environment. If you would like to help out at any of these events, you’re most welcome… please let us know. You will be most welcome!

Sonia Law was also voted in as Chief Instructor for 2010 which sees her take up the role of second Vice President. Congratulations to the new committee! 2009 was a very busy year for our pony club members however 2010 is shaping up to be extremely busy! Already our riders have been out and about with various pony club activities. Romy McCullough, Ella Skoupy, Maddison Lashmar and Rachael Law all enjoyed the Mounted Games clinic held on 2 and 3 January at the Nambour Showgrounds. KENILWORTH LIONEL PIEZ (1931 - 2010) BIDS FAREWELL TO ALL
L
Lionel was an elder and lay preacher at Yandina Seventh Day Adventist Church for many years. He had a long association with the Pathfinder Club outdoor activities.
ionel Piez was born at Sunny Brae Private Hospital, Eumundi on January 10, 1931, the eldest of three children of Norm and Edith.
Lionel was a great nature lover and enjoyed showing visitors Charlie Moreland Park, showing them the big figs and beautiful white gums. He could identify birds by their calls and trees by their bark which he could still enjoy in later years when his sight was failing.
During his time at school as he often recalled riding home from Eerwah Vale School with his father on his horse drawn grader and later at Eumundi being paid a penny a week to collect the teachers hot lunch from the hotel. During the war years when the troop trains pulled into Eumundi Station the soldiers would get the boys to run and get them a pie. Sometimes the train was pulling out as they arrived back and they would throw the pies and hope the soldiers caught them, or there would be a splatter.
Lionel was Kenilworth’s first Fire Chief, serving for 15 years from 1961-1976. He negotiated with the Purdon family to buy their fowl run for the building of the Fire Station. He often helped families in need in the district doing mechanical jobs for them. He loved to chat to people in the panel shop and after retirement, down town doing his shopping.
Lionel attended Nambour High School, travelling each day on the train. He would often have to catch a goods train to Cooroy to attend his violin lessons. In 1946 he began a motor mechanic apprenticeship at Sims Brothers Garage in Kenilworth. On weekends he rode his pushbike home to Eumundi. He later upgraded to an old BSA motorbike. After several years he took over the panel shop at the garage, working there for 50 years under the ownership of Sims, Rodwells and Hendersons. Lionel’s favourite story from the garage was in the 1950’s. Sims Brothers had to retrieve a car broken down on the Obi Range one dark night. The Blitz tow truck had to be backed up the range a couple of miles with Ern Sims holding up a lantern to show Lionel where to reverse. In 1954 he married Muriel Reynolds of Chatsworth and they built their home in Margaret Street, Kenilworth, living there together for the next 55 years. Their three children Sandra, Gary and Janelle grew up in this home.
In 2006 Lionel and Muriel were made Living Treasures by the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce for community service. Lionel loved his Saviour, his family, church folk and the Kenilworth community. He was sorry he didn’t get to say goodbye to everyone. For many of us who grew up in the 1950’s - we only knew this man as Dagwood. Muriel explained how he gained this nickname. Apparently there had been a man named Lionel employed at the garage prior to 1946 who was nicknamed Dagwood. Lionel Piez was told – all Lionels are called Dagwood in this garage – and so the name stuck. Rest in Peace Dagwood. Lenore Meldrum

OUR COMMUNITY Students ‘Log On’ at Good Shepherd Lutheran College
E
ach Year 6, 9 and 10 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College have this week been issued with a laptop, as part of the Federal Government initiated, Digital Literacy Laptop program at the College. Parents, along with their very enthusiastic students, attended an information session after which the students, looking very pleased with themselves, were issued their new possession. Students are able to use their laptop both at home and in the classroom. Use of the computers will be integrated into each lesson of the school day, the extent, depending on the program of study being undertaken. Good Shepherd Lutheran College Principal, Mr John Mason, is very excited about the flexibility the laptop program will afford students of the College. “We have to embrace technologies and programs that will better equip our students to become 21st century learners. Our staff has thrown themselves into the program wholeheartedly and is very enthusiastic about the possibilities this program opens up.” Creative and inquiring minds equipped to be part of a future few of us can even imagine is the objective of the Good Shepherd Lutheran College program.

Cooroy Gains with The Plantation Approval
ooroy is set to have its very own function centre with The Plantation recently receiving approval from Sunshine Coast Regional Council for height accommodation rooms and the ability to host conferences, weddings and functions for up to 150 people. The application had strong support from local business, community leaders and the tourism industry. The facility provides Cooroy and the hinterland population with much needed quality function, conference and accommodation facilities. It also fills a legitimate, documented and widely acknowledged gap in the Sunshine Coast visitor and resident market. The site of the Plantation at 142 Mary River Road is a very rare and suitable site for such a facility in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. It is close to the town centre yet largely surrounded by extensive State Forest on most of its boundaries and thick trees and vegetation on all. With a venue such as this, our economy will be able to attract a significant amount of the business that is currently lost to the Gold Coast and Brisbane because we have not previously been able to offer a hinterland experience for this number of visitors. The flow-on effects of this type of facility to Cooroy and the surrounding regions is significant with employment opportunities for locals and benefits to many local businesses such as catering companies, laundries, florists, transport companies and the like. The owners and operators of The Plantation have a strong interest in Cooroy as they also own and operate the local Victory Hotel. They have demonstrated their commitment to the community on many occasions since acquiring these properties in late 2007. “The Plantation was instrumental in helping the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce to host the Mates of Marysville Cocktail Party. They provided us the venue and negotiated with a lot of their suppliers to sponsor the event also. We raised over $30,000 for the fire victims in Marysville, Victoria. They’ve also been a major sponsor of Christmas in Cooroy for the last few years and are active members of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce,” said Danielle Taylor, Media and Website Executive of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. “The Mates of Marysville function was an outstanding success and we plan to stage other fundraising events for the benefit of charities and the local community. The Plantation is a sophisticated, high end venue and its ambience is focussed around the sensible and sensitive enjoyment of a beautiful site. It is not a party destination and this is reflected by our good neighbour policy that includes implementing professional, contracted and strict noise and patron control measures for all events,” said Director, Scott Armstrong. ennis clubs across Mary Valley are set to get a financial boost thanks to the launch of Fuzzy Ball Wines.
A team of four high profile Australian wineries, Fuzzy Ball Wines includes Grant Burge, Tyrrell’s Alkoomi and Cuttaway Hill, and has been created to support local tennis clubs across Australia. For every case of wine sold, Fuzzy Ball Wines will donate $25 to a nominated tennis club. Damian Percy, founder of Fuzzy Ball Wines says following the Australian Open, there is a huge surge in the interest and passion for tennis, however local tennis clubs are often overlooked during this time. “We recently conducted a survey and found that 50% of local tennis clubs need to fundraise an average of $2,000 annually, in order to remain operational. ember for Fisher Peter Slipper is urging all households who installed foil insulation through Peter Garrett’s failed home insulation scheme to seek an urgent safety inspection by calling the hotline 131 792 to ensure their homes are safe. An audit by Peter Garrett’s own department has revealed as many as 1000 homes that had foil insulation installed through this failed scheme may have deadly electrical currents in their roofs, Mr Slipper said. “Homeowners should not try to check things for themselves. Tragically, four people have already died, and there is a real risk of more fatalities. “I am committed to doing all I can to ensure homeowners who have installed foil insulation under the program have access to safety inspections and upgrade of the insulation if required under the program,” Mr Slipper said. If you have not installed insulation under the program but have any concerns about electrical safety and insulation, you should contact a licensed electrician to arrange an inspection, Mr Slipper said.

Dog trials showcase to the community and producers the advantages of working dogs and dog educated cattle. In the evening of Saturday 27 March, there will be live entertainment and a licensed bar. Families can enjoy watching an exciting canine high jump competition. Everyone is encouraged to bring their dog and have a go. Who knows? Old Rover may turn out to be the champion of the Gympie District High Jump. A Calcutta will also take place Saturday night, with dogs qualifying for the open finals to be auctioned. A full canteen and hot meals will be available all weekend, and people are welcome to camp at the grounds. Andrea Schulz, better known to locals as Monster, is an example of the enthusiastic youth in rural Queensland. She has committed herself to learning the rural ropes throughout her secondary and now tertiary education, as well as seeking mentorship from some of our purveyors of local wisdom, such as Max and Audrey Johnston. Recently Andrea graduated from the Fairdinkum Stock Handling School where she learned to appreciate the interrelationship of Human, Canine and Bovine/Ovine psychology.

he next round of “Meet The Mayor and Councillors” day is set for Thursday 18 March, from 1pm – 2pm at Imbil RSL hall and from 2.30pm – 3.30pm at Kandanga Hall. I look forward to seeing you on the day. Just a quick reminder about the 2010 Heritage Art competition coming up, and with excellent prize money this year. Closing date for free entry is 14 April. The theme for this year is “Celebrate Your Story - Gympie Region”, phone Gympie Regional Gallery on 5481 0733 for further details. As a matter of interest, the gallery had over 1200 visitors during the month of January this year. The gallery has many interesting exhibits coming up so keep a look out for those. There are also a number or lectures for the avid artists in March. A 61 lot subdivision has been approved for the township of Imbil in last months Planning and Development committee meeting. With the number of allotments in current proposals, Imbil is a town set to expand and become a thriving Mary Valley centre. The Woodworks Museum has settled in well and has become a much visited destination in Gympie, to find more information visit their website at www.woodworksmuseum. com.au Sporting Groups in the Mary Valley are looking for extra funding, check out www.sportrec.qld.gov.au and see what funding is available. The Gympie Regional Library located in Lambert Hyne Drive at Imbil (opposite Imbil Butcher) is being well utilised, with a growing number of members. In February this year we have 1045 members and that number is set to increase, so come on in and see what a wide variety of services we provide. It’s air-conditioned so it’s a nice cool place to relax too. Lake Alford (affectionately known as ‘The Duckponds’) is undergoing some changes as you may have noticed. The building of the All Abilities Playground is progressing well with the car park being completed. This playground will be a focal point for families especially those with ‘special needs’ members. It is hoped that the playground will be completed sometime in late 2010. Thank you for your support and we hope that residents will make full use of these facilities with this Christmas being a good time to experience the park. Have you thought about paying your council rates monthly, well you can, as long as you pay the full amount prior to the due date. ospice Update I’m delighted that at last the Katie Rose Cottage at Doonan is a reality and will open soon. The introduction of my Private Members Bill late last year, and extensive lobbying since that time, has prompted the State Government to introduce a new planning code which will pave the way for muchneeded palliative care hospices on the Sunshine Coast and throughout Queensland. The Katie Rose Cottage is the first community hospice support house to be opened in Australia. Other existing facilities have been purpose built and are manned by professional paid staff. The founders and their committee have plans underway to build another Hospice in Nambour on land offered at a peppercorn rent by the Church of Christ. State Government plans to change our Constitution… have your say! I wonder how many people are aware that the State Government is planning to amend our Constitution by including a preamble - based on the assumption that “the people of Queensland”, as opposed to “the Queensland Parliament” agree to a list of stated opinions (visit Parliamentary website or my office to see a copy of the Constitution (Preamble) Amendment Bill). There has been no preamble to our constitution in the past. While I don’t oppose the Government’s intent for the preamble, I do believe that the government is presumptuous in assuming that the majority of Queenslanders know about its intention, or agree with the Bill’s intention, when no public consultation or referendum has been carried out. I have accordingly moved an amendment to the Government’s Constitution (Preamble) Amendment Bill 2009, that it is in fact the Parliament of Queensland’s views, not the people’s views. New JP awards announced Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations will now be eligible to receive new Service Awards after 40 and 60 years of service. In the past service awards have been presented to JPs and Commissioners of Declarations after they have completed 25 years and 50 years of service. Volunteer to be a part of the 2010 Great Reading Adventure!
he MS Readathon is gearing up for the 2010 Great Reading Adventure and is looking for volunteers to help inspire children to read and raise funds for multiple sclerosis (MS). The MS Readathon is Australia’s premier reading-based fundraiser which encourages Australians to read books, learn about multiple sclerosis (MS) and raise funds to help people living with MS. Each year the MS Readathon calls on volunteers around the country to donate their time to visit schools far and wide, spreading the multiple sclerosis (MS) message and explaining to students how they can make a difference by raising sponsorship through reading! Many wonderful people volunteer each year. Some have MS; others know someone with MS, and some want to help raise funds for people living with MS. There is, however, a shortage of such people. “Volunteers are integral to the success of the MS Readathon,“ said Jennifer Irvine, MS Readathon National Manager. ”Please contact us if you think you’re able to help with visiting schools or supporting our staff in our State offices.” Community Representatives receive full training and deliver interactive presentations supplied by the MS Readathon. The role requires some availability for school visits across April and May. Administrative support is also needed all year round in the state office located in Brisbane. Interested individuals are asked to contact the MS Readathon office in Queensland on 1300 677 323 or msreadathon@msqld.org.au to discuss their involvement. Children and adults of all ages take part in the MS Readathon, from all across Australia. In 2009, the MS Readathon raised over $2,400,000 nationally with 51,000 participants reading over 1 million books during June, July and August. The highest fundraiser in Australia was 10 year old Cameron Cox from the ACT who raised an amazing $30,025. The highest fundraising school was Sydney Grammar School Edgecliff Preparatory School who raised collectively over $31,331 from 131 participating students.

fter the huge success of the ‘Nambour Alive!’ Street festival on 5 December, the whole region’s asking ‘when will this happen again’? In 2010, a smaller version of the celebration will bring the town Alive! each final Friday of the month from 26 February from 5pm to 9pm, as Nambour’s Moonlight Markets move permanently to the specially designed precinct - offering Nambour’s residents and visitors a wide array of stallholders selling unique items and food with entertainment in the town heart. Nambour futures’ market coordinator, Helen Langlois, is excited about the prospect of more regular Moonlight Markets in the stunning new community space, with its festoon lighting, purpose built stage, and art structures with water misting and trees introducing colour and coolness into the Town Square area. Helen says ‘Nambour’s popular Moonlight markets offer stallholders a great opportunity to showcase their wares, with lots of stalls eager to return and new ones coming on board each market. Already the markets are getting a reputation regionally as a place to try some great food in this fantastic outdoor setting - including a wine bar!’ There will be lots of activities for kids including sandwizard, face painting, balloon art, clowns and pirate puzzles. For the first market of 2010, headline act, Jambezi, a ‘melodious montage of Sunshine Coast marimba maestros playing joyous worldly rhythms guaranteed to get your body movin’; brings seven vibrant musicians to the stage calling on everyone to dance, dance, dance!

Up to $30,000 available for regional artists
egional Queensland artists could receive between $5,000 and $30,000 for their projects as the Australian Government continues to invest in the future of the arts in the state. Round 1 for the 2010 Regional Arts Fund (RAF) is now open, with applications closing on Monday 15 March for projects commencing after 1 July 2010. Communities, artists and organisations from all over Queensland have experience positive outcomes from successful RAF grants, with projects delivering meaningful and lasting outcomes that strengthen cultural identity, develop artists and build community cohesion. Last year, the Fund injected over $380,000 into regional Queensland communities, contributing a total project value of over $1,184,567 to the state’s regional arts economy. The range of projects that received funding in 2009 illustrates the diversity of projects eligible for funding. They included cartoon workshops, a writers festival in Cairns, children’s art festival in Bowen, cabaret music festival in Springsure, documentation of Indigenous cultural heritage in the Lockhart River, photovoice of an African refugees in Toowoomba and visual art exhibitions at a Fossil Festival in Richmond. The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative and a unique form of funding for Queensland to support the arts in regional, remote and isolated Australia. The Fund is designed to operate as a long-term investment in these regions to support sustainable, community-related cultural development.
