KENILWORTH Seventy Years ago in Kenilworth
A
report on the Kenilworth Dairymen’s Organisation monthly meeting held in February, 1944 was published on the front page of the Nambour Chronicle (18.2.1944). The district dairy mechanic (Mr. E.A. (Ern) Sims) was present, by invitation, to discuss the maintenance of dairy plant and machinery. It was computed that some 80 milking machines alone required servicing in this area, in addition to the great number of engines, pumps, and windmills, lighting plants, tractors, rotary hoes and sundry implements. This all indicates the extent to which Kenilworth farming has become mechanised. The servicing is dependent upon the ability of the mechanic to travel to and from the job, a fact realised by the Liquid Fuel Board, but not apparently, by the Comptroller of Rubber. An increase in fuel allowance has been made, without the corresponding assistance in tyres and tubes. A resolution was passed to have this anomaly brought under the notice of the Comptroller of Rubber. Transport of school children in flood time has been achieved to an extent of petrol being made available, but again the project has been limited by the Comptroller of Rubber withholding tyres and tubes.
The reason for the wartime rationing of these items is best explained in an excerpt of a Government report held at the Australian War Memorial. Japanese occupation of Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies denied the Allies three-quarters of their peacetime supplies of natural rubber. Australia faced a gloomy stock position at the beginning of 1942, with a small ration of natural rubber allowed by Allied control from rubber production not in Japanese hands. Production of tyres for passenger cars was terminated immediately. At the beginning of 1942, there were 300,000 new tyres in dealers’
stocks, which had dwindled to 80,000 two years later in February 1943 despite restriction of sales to essential users, in practice primarily those in (liquid fuel) priorities one to three. http://static.awm.gov.au/images/collection/pdf/ RCDIG1070664--1-.PDF Who the Comptroller of Rubber was at that time could not be determined from research – but until March 1944 a Mr. H. Taylor who was the managing director of the Advanx Tyre and Rubber Company was doing honorary duties for the Commonwealth as Assistant-Controller of Rubber when he collapsed and died from heart strain. Historical Note 80 milking machines = 80 working dairies in 1944. Lenore Meldrum President of Kenilworth and District Historical Assn Inc.

Auditions will be held in March in Noosa for roles in a short film titled Angel • Gifts to Royal Family members can be both strange and valuable. Those to the Queen range from a six-kilogram artillery cartridge on a wooden base to a five strand pearl necklace from the United Arab Emirates, the Duke of Kent a wheel nut mounted on a plinth from Aston Martin, Prince Harry a 3D printed doll of himself to a falconry glove from the US Air Force, and the Prince of Wales a metal model of Abdul-Aziz International Airport • Boiling an egg can be expensive. A woman at the Runaway Bay Village activated the fire alarm in her kitchenette, and doing so was billed $1,000.00 after the fire service was called out • If you had your sights set on Johnny Depp, then it’s possibly too late. He is reportedly engaged to fellow actor Amber Heard • Death comes to us all, but an 81-yearold from Sweden was wrongly reported to be dead after his sister, 90, spoke with a doctor on the phone and was given the impression he was dead. Laughing off the mixup – and paraphrasing Mark Twain – he said: “Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” • Care for a job as a rat catcher? A Yugoslavia ship built in 1976 was being towed to be scrapped last year when the towline to a tug broke in rough seas. The ghost ship, which is still afloat and heading for British waters, will have a lot of cannibal rats aboard and they eat each other. Nice job for someone eventually. Blair Meldrum

KENILWORTH KENILWORTH FIRST RESPONSE news
C
hristmas and the New Year have come and gone and so begins 2014. The Kenilworth First Response group wish you all a healthy, safe and happy year ahead. Our Responders have been kept busy over the holiday period with a large number of call outs and I would like to thank all of the Response group volunteers for giving their time so freely and doing such a great job. We have had a great response to our request for properties to display their house numbers as it can be difficult sometimes to find and read property numbers, particularly in the dark. Our objective is to respond to your call out as quickly as possible so being able to see property numbers is a great help to us. The hot conditions are hopefully coming to an end soon but in the meantime please make sure you increase your fluid intake and stay hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water per day. Laughing Out Loud! I HAVE QUESTIONS! If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? • Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a race car is not called a racist? • If it’s true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? • If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP? • Do Lipton Tea employees take ‘coffee breaks?’ • What hair colour do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men?

GUARDING YOUR STOCK
ree Guards can be a valuable aid in protecting the time and money you have invested in your tree planting. Tree Guards protect your trees from several threats including weeds (why can’t our trees grow as fast!), weeding (oops did I just spray my tree too!), frost (cold enough to freeze your leaves off!) and last but not least wallabies and hares (always up for a free feed!). For plants that we really want to look after and make sure they get off to a good start we use the Plant Pink Tree Guards™. These Guards cost more initially but can be reused several times because of their rigid construction and provide many years of protection. “Why pink?” I hear you ask. Research has demonstrated that the colour pink reflects and focuses the red fraction, concentrating this photosynthetic energy to enhance plant growth – well you did ask! I also like the pink colour of these guards for their high visibility. We often maintain some weed cover on our sites to provide soil protection and improvement. These guards stand out and provide great protection during weed maintenance runs. Tree Guards are great for protecting stock in the summer months when the ground really heats up and some plants can get cooked at the base. These are available through Brush Turkey Enterprises Wholesale Nursery. Check out our Guards and tubestock at our website www.brushturkey.com.au or give us a call on 5494 3642.

OUR POLITICS
W
ell here we are at start of 2014, I would like to wish everybody a happy, prosperous and safe new year and let’s hope that this one doesn’t seem to go as quickly as the last one. State Govt. Sale of Mary Valley Properties. There have been over 180 expressions of interest (EOI’s) received on the properties. An Economic Development Proposal Manager was appointed in early January and current progress to date is, 69 properties have settled, 10 leases have been signed with a est. value over $11million and 89 jobs, 84 tenants registered for the Tenant Purchase Scheme. Discussions will occur with the regional Education Queensland office regarding enrolment numbers in 2014 for students at Mary Valley schools. Water allocations manager has been appointed. Council has approved reciprocal dog registration for any other local government (council) areas, provided, that the dog owner has proof that the dog is currently registered in that financial year with the other council. A New Local Disaster management plan has been adopted by council and I would like to congratulate all the council staff and emergency management people who were involved with its formation. Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 2 March, 2014 Site Registrations are now open! So put yourself into the picture! More info visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or call 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329). Please don’t hesitate to contact CUA directly at community@cleanup.com.au or on (02) 8197 3412. A friendly reminder that we are still in our storm and cyclone season. Are you prepared for an emergency with food, medication, valuables like photos and documents, radio and batteries. We just never know when a disaster will strike. Kandanga Township Beautification, “Our Towns and Sustainable Centres” project is in the planning process after the community engagement part of the project and Amamoor is the next town in the Mary Valley to be considered, but the planning will take some time yet. I am available on my mobile most of the time, but emails are a little difficult for me to read when I am travelling or in meetings. So if that matter is urgent, please phone.
Rogo’s round-up
I
hope you all enjoyed a fantastic Christmas break and that 2014 is off to a terrific start. The next couple of months are absolutely crucial to the future of the Hinterland Connect bus service. The State Government has made it clear that this trial service will stop at the end of June unless more people make use of it. As a joint funding partner of the trial, council has
accepted the state’s position. From July through to October of last year, patronage levels on the bus service were under the state’s government’s requirement but not by much. In fact, if patronage levels returned to where they were during the 2012/13 financial year it would most likely meet the state’s target. This service is hugely important to the hinterland community, and I know many of you hate me saying this – but it really is a case of use it or risk losing it. Improved patronage levels between now and the end of April is the only thing that will give it a fighting chance to continue. It’s up to you, the community, to show this service is required. Moy Pocket bridge After much too-ing and fro-ing, the new two-lane concrete Moy Pocket Bridge is now operational. It replaces the previous timber bridge and has been built higher above the Mary River to reduce any possible impacts from flooding. While the new bridge is a positive and necessary outcome for this area, I shared the local community’s view that the old Pickering Bridge could and should be retained due to its strong heritage values. Unfortunately though, a motion I put to council’s ordinary meeting late last year to undertake the necessary investigations to ensure the old bridge could be safely retained, was not successful. IMBIL POLICE BRIEFS
appy New Year to everyone and we hope that 2014 is a good year for you. Unfortunately, 2014 has not had a good start for the Imbil Police Division. There have been six burglaries committed on dwellings in the Imbil Division during the first two weeks of January. Most of these have been on unattended dwellings and have occurred on any day of the week. We have solved two of these offences but it is clear that we have offenders active in the Division. We are, with assistance from Gympie Police and Gympie Detectives, conducting inquiries and extra patrols of the Division but we need the assistance from the general public. It is obvious that the offenders know that the premises are unattended. If you see anything suspicious ring Imbil Police on 5484 5222, Gympie Police on 5480 1111 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. If you see a suspicious vehicle in your area that may be ‘casing’ the area, try to obtain a registration number and good description of the vehicle. If you have someone turn up at your premises that you think may be suspicious, let us know. This may be someone turning up at your front door unexpectedly asking about a lost dog, renting premises or some other random reason. It is better to report something that turns out to be legitimate than not to report it and have you or your neighbour broken into. Make sure your premises are secure. Long gone are the days when you can go out in the backyard and leave the front door open. You cannot leave your premises unlocked whenever you are away, even if only going to pick up the mail. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle if it is unlocked. Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it, even in the garage at home. Hopefully, with co-operation from the Police and the community, we can rid our area of these criminals. Remember, crime is not just a Police problem; it is a community problem and takes effort from the WHOLE community to make the Valley a great place to live. We had a fairly good Christmas / New Year period with lots of visitors and little trouble. There were a few crashes but no major injuries. There were very few reports of unruly behaviour. We are finding an increase in unlicensed driving and driving unregistered vehicle offences. To drive a vehicle on the road, the vehicle must be registered and you must have a current drivers licence for that class of vehicle. If you have a learners permit, you must be under the direction of a person who has held an open drivers licence for that class of vehicle for 12 months. Remember, to display L and P plates as appropriate and these must be visible front and rear of the vehicle. Terry Kennedy Bill Greer Sergeant Senior Constable

Life Chats …
ove my kids to bits, yet I confess, nothing gives me greater pleasure than the annual “Back to school”. After six weeks of school holidays, I don’t think any mother wouldn’t enjoy dropping the kiddies through that school gate. Truly, we’ve all had enough. The kids happy to be back and I’m real happy for them to be back. Usain Bolt’s world record for land speed is seriously in jeopardy on my exit from the school yard on that first day back. A synopsis of the holiday/back to school period presents some interesting points. • Why is it that in school holidays I am unable to go to the toilet by myself? Do questions, dilemmas or other concocted dramas really have the urgency to be discussed whilst your mother is on the throne? • You can bet your last dollar that a mother will say at least a million times: “Shut the front door, close that fridge door, no you can’t have more food we’ve just eaten, would you please clean your room!!!” • Kids, what’s not to love about doing absolutely nothing and just curling up in a cozy spot and reading a book I ask? • Everytime we go out doesn’t mean money has to fly out in bundles from the mother’s purse. • Don’t think for a moment that my life success as a mother is to be measured by the amount of loads of washing I do whilst you are on holidays. • Would children ever dare to entertain the thought that their rooms could be found in some sort of hygienic state of affair for more than a couple of days in a row? • Sibling rivalry. Face the facts. It’s been around for generations. It’s not a new thing. It’s called engagement. Everyone knows the buttons to press to get great “engagement” from your sister or brother. • I am not a mother who covers books with contact or plastic sleeves. Such a tragic waste of time and money. Long term environmental impact and stress for the mother is why I don’t partake. • Love the lunchbox gig. Particularly using Go-Green Lunchboxes - which are sensational. My kids know that the first week back to school is the “real” holiday for the mother. Happy back to school kids, I’ll be with you in spirit. MM of Obi “Nobody knows of the work it makes to keep the home together: nobody knows of the steps it takes, nobody knows – but mother.” Author Unknown
