Chook Chase Rewards
enilworth First Response Group gratefully acknowledges the Hall Committee’s generous contribution as a share of proceeds from the annual Chook Chase. Such valuable financial assistance boosts our coffers allowing viable funding to help defray the expense of running the two purpose fitted vehicles. Meeting this liability is the responsibility of the selffunding group. Contributions such as the above-mentioned enable first responders to maintain this essential emergency service to the community. During the Chook Chase all available group members presented for duties on each of the two days, enhancing the success of the event. Emergency care was ministered to trauma cases thereby positively influencing the outcome of injury recovery. Responders also offered assistance to other participating local groups throughout the weekend.

KENILWORTH
I
FIND THE EGG...
n November 2009 internationally renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy visited the Conondale Range near Kenilworth to develop a concept for a significant permanent artwork. He was commissioned by the Department of Environment and Resource Management, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Division to create “Strangler Cairn” for the Conondale Range Great Walk. The four day walk is 56km of magnificent, rugged terrain featuring ancient rainforest and cascading waterfalls. “Strangler Cairn”, completed in November 2011, is made from granite sourced from a local quarry. It is also planted with a small strangler fig (see colour photo page 9) – Ficus watkinsiana – which, over time will grow and ‘strangle’ the cairn. Visitors can walk to Strangler Cairn from the Booloumba Creek day-use area in the Conondale National Park. The ‘egg’ shaped sculpture is located just past the second entrance to the Gold Mine circuit on the great walk track to Artist Cascades (10.6 km return). It is approximately a 4km round trip from the start of the walk to view the sculpture. You need a four wheel drive vehicle to access the three creek crossings to the day-use area, where the track starts. Turn off Maleny-Kenilworth Road (7km south of Kenilworth or 14km north of Conondale) on to Booloiumba Creek Road. You’ll find a map at www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/imbil/ pdf/imbil-conondale-map.pdf
Gardening
L
omandra - Mat Rush In the garden this fast growing plant is much in demand as a low, bushy and very hardy landscaping plant. It establishes quickly into attractive clumps, needing watering initially, but is other wise adaptable to a range of conditions, including full sun, shade, frost and indifferent soils. An excellent plant for rehabilitation of creek banks, stabilising soil and land erosion.
It also grows in clumps amongst the rocks of rainforest streams, often forming dense colonies which can hold fast in the fiercest floods. The tight, spiky clusters of creamy male and female flowers are sweetly scented and the heads of hard, pale brown seeds are quite decorative. The white soft bases of the leaves can be eaten. It is a local species which occurs from Taree in NSW to Nambour in south-east Qld. Lomandra is a host plant to many butterflies including a variety of skipper butterflies, the largest of which is the Symmomus Skipper (Trapezites symmomus). As your Mayoral candidate in the Sunshine Coast Council election in March 2012, I want to work with Kenilworth people to boost the local economy and create jobs.
As Mayor, I will work closely with your two divisional councillors and in partnership with local people to get things done. I love Kenilworth and spent Easter holidays this year at Charlie Moreland Forest Park with my husband and children. We enjoyed the breathtaking scenery from the Mt Allan fire tower and swimming in the fresh water creek. We joined in the Cheese, Wine and Food Fest and explored the local shops, cafes and art galleries. In previous years, my family has enjoyed camping, horse riding and watching for platypus at Kenilworth Homestead. With all of these magnificent qualities that tourists and visitors crave, the people of Kenilworth and council can plan a positive future with confidence. I would happily accept invitations from local people to listen to their ideas about revitalising Kenilworth.
Yours Sincerely

KENILWORTH Kenilworth and Flooding
to reach 25ft. lin.; flood height there is 21ft. But the Mary’s upstream flood had not reached Gympie late last night. The January 2011 flood reached a height of 11.27 metres at 10.46 pm on January 9 (Bureau of Meteorology data) – that is 5.57 metres below the 1898 flood. The Bureau has a website http://www.bom.gov.au/cgibin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ60287.html that gives details of river heights gathered from the automatic recording stations along the Mary River. From observation it has been determined that when the Mary River at the Kenilworth Homestead reaches 4.5 metres flood height – Gheerulla Creek Bridge may well be impassable. There does not appear to be any recorded knowledge of the relationship between Mary River height and the inundation of local bridges (e.g. Pickering Bridge, Obi Obi bridge, Houston Bridge).
T
he Mary Valley has always been prone to flooding. The first inhabitants of this land knew the stories and passed them down through their oral history. Their descendants warned Isaac Moore where the big waters came to when he was planning to build his homestead on Kenilworth Run. Mr. Moore ignored their warnings and had the 1893 flood lap the homestead. When closer settlement began in 1891 early selectors lived in rough slab huts prior to building a more permanent structure on their land. It is quite noticeable that all those old homesteads were built high on hills, as was the original Kenilworth School (on the site of Woods Sand and Gravel works). These were all erected within memory of the biggest floods ever seen in the district (1893 16.38 metres, 1898 16.84 metres). Geographically the source of the Stanley and Mary Rivers are in close proximity in the hills beyond Maleny and possibly for that reason reporting of river heights at Kenilworth warranted reporting in Brisbane papers – in living memory of those mammoth floods.
The Kenilworth Historical Museum would like to gather this data for their flood records – if any readers have this knowledge – please forward data to the Museum at PO Box 166, Kenilworth Q 4574 or by email to lenore.meldrum@ bigpond.com Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth and District Historical Assn.

ow that MVI has succeeded in obtaining $27,000 to market the Mary Valley in its “‘come out to play” campaign, we need photos to promote the region and its unique activities. A promotional photo bank is being developed to showcase to the rest of the world what residents already know is so special.
That’s the photograph that tells a special story. And that is the photograph that could win the competition being held by the Mary Valley Country Marketing Committee as it campaigns to promote the valley and its unique activities. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to catch that classic snap. Categories include Landscape, People and Action with entries being taken until February 6, 2012. Harvey Norman has generously donated photography print vouchers to the lucky winners. The competition also offers people the chance to be more involved in the marketing of their region. It’s a chance to share your experiences with “Mary” while enjoying your favourite activity. Photos will be used to develop the website www. maryvalleycountry.com.au and also enhance a series of activity brochures to promote the valley. Photos or inquiries can be submitted to tourism@ themaryvalley.com.au or post to MVC Photo Competition,
When you are out “playing” down the river or riding through the forest this holiday season, consider how useful that classic shot could be. As for the competition the photos will be used to develop the website www.maryvalleycountry.com.au and also enhance a series of activity brochures to promote the valley. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to catch the magic of the region. The photo bank is the first key activity for the newly appointed Lesa Bell who has been employed by community organisation Mary Valley Inc. MARY VALLEY
FROM MOOROOKA TO THE MARY! ROSEVALE HOUSE B&B WELCOMES TRAVELLERS AND CITY DWELLERS ALIKE
R
osevale House B&B is set below The Bluff at Brooloo on five acres of landscaped gardens, in the picturesque Mary Valley, half way between Kenilworth and Imbil. The house itself began its existence in Moorooka in Brisbane in the early 1930s and the ornate plaster ceilings and stained glass windows are typical of the artistic nature of that period. Hosts Val and Martin Rhodes fell in love with the Valley during their travels and bought the property 12 months ago. Already there have been repeat visitors to Rosevale House who have returned for the serenity and gracious atmosphere of the home amidst beautiful countryside and gardens. Val has realised the value of being able to immerse their visitors in collecting eggs and fruit from the garden and using these natural ingredients in the daily meals. So many people live in cities far removed from these daily joys. Our bed and breakfast accommodation includes

the Kenilworth suite and the Moreland room, each of which has polished wooden floors, a Queen sized bed with quality bed linen, a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, an LCD TV and DVD player and a verandah overlooking the gardens and pool. The larger Kenilworth suite also has a sitting room with a sofa bed, making it suitable for a small family. We also have a self-contained studio apartment, which comprises a spacious, attractive room with king sized bed, double sofa bed, sitting and dining areas, large LCD TV and DVD player and a log fire for those cosy winter evenings. The apartment has a large, modern ensuite bathroom and a fully-equipped kitchen with full-sized oven and hot plates, large fridge and microwave. There are private verandahs overlooking the gardens on three sides for those warm, sunny days. There is also a small Weber BBQ on the verandah for your use. Bedding and towels provided and an optional breakfast menu is available. The studio apartment is suitable accommodation for a small family. Rosevale House is the perfect stop for exploring the Mary Valley and you will take a scenic drive through Route 51... the prettiest countryside to 4210 Mary Valley Road, Brooloo, Queensland at the junction with Callemonda Road, or phone 07 5488 6770 • http://www.rosevalehouse. com.au or enquiries@rosevalehouse.com.au

he State Government have made their decision and we will be a divided council as from the next council election which will be held on 31 March 2012. The Mary Valley area will be ‘Division 8’ and will take in the area from Brooloo in the South to part of Jones Hill in the North and from Mothar Mt to the left hand side of Amamoor Ck Rd along with Kandanga Ck and Yabba Ck Rds. If you are wanting to go onto the net and search your address and see what division you are living in go to http:// www.ecq.qld.gov.au/electoral_districts.aspx?id=4722 and scroll down to Gympie and then enter your address and the appropriate map will come up. I will definitely be putting my name forward and seeking reelection in March as a Councillor for this division. To find your road (and print a map) go to http://www.gympie.qld.gov.au click on ‘visitor’ and then on ‘road directory’ and type in your road name. The 1st General Council meeting for the year will be held on Wednesday 25 January. Neighbouring properties of the MVHR (Heritage Rail) are being encouraged to “adopt” their section of the track verge. This is totally voluntary and some people have already taken it upon themselves to beautify their stretch of the track verge and I applaud those residents who do this. Some people have also fenced up against the track to keep the grass down and in the process, giving their cattle more land to graze. Unfortunately it was reported at the last Community and Economic Development Committee that a total of 16 cats were euthanased in November. Some of these cats could have been some bodies beloved pets, but without a microchip or being registered there is no way of knowing who owns them. So PLEASE make sure that your pets are protected. It is now a State law that all pet cats and dogs are registered with your Regional Council. The Queensland Government has released the Qld Cycle Strategy 2011-2012 with a vision to get more people cycling more often. The Wide Bay Burnett Principal Cycle Network Plan, of which we are a part, will highlight the highest order of routes and you can check out the plan on www.trm.qld.gov.au/wbbpcnp or call Ms Collins on 3898 0812.
Hopefully, by now, most of our Imbil residents have considered, filled in and returned the information sheet about the new District Park in Imbil and what it would ultimately look like, back to Gympie Regional Council. As we want comment from the community on how a new District Park in Imbil would ultimately look. We have had great news that the Government is not going to close the Traveston rail station, so if you, like me, want to keep the station please keep using it. Whenever our son comes home on the train we pick him up and drop him off there as it is the closest rail station to the Mary Valley. We are told to “Use it or Lose it” ! NOTE: do you have a ‘back up’ phone in case the power goes of and your cordless won’t work? With the storm season upon us it pays to be prepared. Don’t forget first and third Thursday evening First Response Training at Imbil Fire Station. Cr Julie Walker Candidate for Gympie Regional Council Division 8
Table Corner ... GLUTEN FREE CHOCOLATE & CHESTNUT CAKE! 250g dark chocolate • 6 eggs • 1 pinch salt • 125 g unsalted butter • 435 g chestnut puree unsweetened • 1 tbs rum (optional) • 1tsp vanilla essence • 175g caster sugar 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C, gas mark 4. Grease a 23 cm spring form or cake tin. 2. Break the chocolate into pieces and melt in the microwave or in a double boiler (au bain-marie, recommended), and set aside. 3. Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff, but not dry. 4. In another bowl, whisk butter and chestnut puree with the sugar. Gradually whisk in the egg yolks, then add the rum and melted chocolate. 5. Stir in a dollop of the egg white, whisk well to mix everything together, then carefully fold the rest of the egg white in the chestnut mixture. 6. Pour the batter into the tin and let bake for 40 to 60 minutes. You could do the toothpick test, but it should not come out completely clean. Let the cake cool in its tin on a rack before you unmold it on to a plate. Note: for quicker baking time and small serving size use silicone muffin molds. Decorate with whipped cream and candied chestnuts. ENJOY!

IMBIL POLICE BRIEFS
appy New Year to everyone, we hope that 2012 will be kind to you. We had a relatively quiet Christmas New Year period with very few traffic crashes and the vast majority of people in the area behaved themselves. It was good to see campers returning and the main street full of people. Although we have had a good run with traffic crashes, traffic enforcement is one of the highest priorities for the Queensland Police Service. We will continue to conduct extensive patrolling of all roads and dealing with traffic offenders when located. Most traffic crashes are caused by traffic offences being committed by one or both drivers. A lot of offences are committed by drivers who are just not concentrating. It is necessary to be aware of what is going on in your vehicle, around you in other vehicles and what speed zone you are travelling in. Speed limits are constantly changing in this area, even on the highway. ‘I thought the speed limit was higher’ is not an excuse for speeding. One offence that is becoming prevalent in this area is crossing double centre lines. This is occurring on winding stretches of road, such as through Goomong and at Tuchekoi, and is caused by lack of attention and travelling too fast. As vehicles travel around a right hand bend in the road, they are crossing double centre lines, sometimes completely onto the wrong side of the road. Imagine what this does to drivers approaching around the bend in the opposite direction. All it needs is to slow down a bit. We are receiving complaints about two intersections. One is vehicles not complying with road markings when travelling from Mary Valley Road into Dobson Road (at Traveston Crossing when going to the Highway). Vehicles are cutting across the painted traffic island which is a $300 fine and loss of three points.
The other complaint area is vehicles turning right from Mary Valley Road into Kandanga Imbil Road cutting the corner. There are double lines in Kandanga Imbil Road down to the corner. Cutting the corner here is also a $300 fine and three points. Again, all it needs is for vehicles to slow down. It may take longer to get up the hill and may delay your arrival in Imbil by 30 seconds. Is that 30 seconds worth $300? There have been a number of problems in the area with dogs attacking stock, chooks, other dogs and children recently. Some of these attacks are by wild dogs but some are by domestic dogs. The owner of a dog is liable for the conduct of that dog and if the dog attacks another animal or a person, the owner could be successfully sued for damages. The control of dogs in the community is a Council responsibility. If you have a dog problem in your area, wild or domestic, contact the Gympie Council. Terry Kennedy Sergeant

Wellington’s Way
appy New Year to you all and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Jenny and I shared a quiet Christmas this year with family.
Fishing It was around this time last year that I was arranging for a group of recreational fisherman to meet with the Minister, to discuss the proposed changes to Snapper fishing laws in Queensland. The subject of fishing is one that is close to the hearts of many on the Coast and it was recently put to me that we, as elected Members of Parliament, need to do more to protect our fish stocks for future generations to enjoy. Back when I was on Council, I donated my payment for sitting on the Caloundra and Maroochy Water Board to stocking our local dams. I am keen to continue to do what I can to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy this wonderful recreational pastime. One very keen fisherman suggested that the rules and regulations that we currently have in place are good enough, they just need to be enforced. He said that he thought the reason fisherman were not catching as many fish as they used to, was because some fisherman were taking fish that were too small and that the authorities should be policing this and not looking at ways to further restrict fishing areas. Put simply, he said that every fish should be allowed to grow big enough to breed and that way there would be plenty of fish. I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of other keen fisherman. You can say NO! I have been contacted by a resident who is concerned about the behaviour of door to door sales people from an electrical supply company. She said, the salesman wanted to see her electricity account and when she said no, he became quite pushy. If you are confronted by similar behaviour, you are within your rights to ask for the salesman’s name and to report them. Or simply say no, and shut the door. You can also do as this lady did, and contact my office and I will lodge a complaint on your behalf. Scams Our Parliamentary Services IT people recently advised my office of the latest email scam to come across their desks. This scam email is made to look like an official email from Telstra BigPond. The email scam advises of a problem with the account and asks readers to click on a hyperlink that will direct your PC to a bogus website where you PC may be infected. If you want to know more, just give my office a call. Community funding announced The new year brought good news for the Kenilworth Earlybird Playgroup in the form of funding toward fencing for the playgroup at the Community College. The State Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund announced successful funding applications this month - congratulations to the playgroup members who will receive $12,373 toward their project.
