KENILWORTH Knitters Prepare for the Bombing of Kenilworth
a group of five 12 year olds on her 10.1 hand pony Prince, the feat was all the more glorious. Congratulations Caeli! Caeli will also be representing KPC from 1-4 July at the Zone 6 Junior Coaching Clinic to be held at Nambour Showgrounds. She will be studying theory and practicing flatwork and jumping. Coming up on Saturday 26 July, KPC will proudly host the Zone 6 Pony Clubs Annual Formal (Hack) Day. It should be a great day. Caeli proudly displaying her first place trophy with two of her competitors.
Y
arnbombing will inject instant swathes of colour around the town centre for this year’s Kenilworth Celebrates! on Saturday 13 September (and also in time for the Show). And the lively group that assembled in Kenilworth Town Park recently for Kenilworth’s Worldwide Knit in Public (WWKiP) Day event was excited about making the colourful wrappings for the poles and posts in Elizabeth Street. The level of knitting expertise – there were experienced knitters, those who had never held a knitting needle and others who were somewhere in between – was no barrier to the enthusiasm for turning the basketloads of colourful yarn into fabric and decorations for the yarnbombing. After a few hours of swapping ideas and teaching and learning techniques, the showers and drop in temperature (winter is coming!) prompted a change in location; and the activity continued in the comfort of the Kenilworth Arts Council Rooms.
WWKiP is an international event held each year; and Kenilworth Arts Council will organise another event sometime between the second Saturday and the third Sunday of June next year. Meanwhile, everyone is welcome to be part of, or watch, the yarnbombing of Kenilworth’s town centre on Saturday 13 September this year.

Order Of Australia Award to Jenifer Simpson
e send our congratulations to Jenifer Simpson on receiving an Order of Australia Medal, in the Queen’s Birthday Awards, for her service to conservation and the environment, especially in the area of water efficiency. Jenifer, now of Twin Waters, lived for many years at Booloumba Creek and has long been a passionate activist for water recycling, conservation and best – practice management. As a chemist and author, Jenifer has worked tirelessly to safeguard sensitive ecosystems and educate the community. As a strong opponent of the Traveston Dam, she says, “Dams are so destructive and disruptive to living systems of rivers.” Jenifer and her late husband retired to Kenilworth area in 1977 and she was well-known as a breeder of donkeys. A lady of many talents! Congratulations, Jenifer!
KPC news
ongratulations to all the KPC riders who went to Widgee on the weekend of 7 and 8 June 2014. Sonia Law, Rachael Law, Bronte Law and Matilda Law attended a campdraft school on the Saturday followed by a competition on the Sunday. Bronte placed 2nd and Matilda 3rd in the 14-16 years age group. Rachael placed a credible 5th in her Associates age group. Sonia, Rachael and Alice Gillis then attended the Widgee Gymkhana on Monday. Well done to all riders! Our last muster on June 14 with a small group of riders was fantastic. We focussed on developing jumping skills. Rachael has been doing training on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm until dark, with interested members. On Sunday 15 June, Caeli Hinkler got her first ever first place trophy when she was at Caloundra gymkhana – she was so excited. When you think that she was competing in

KENILWORTH Technological Advances Since 1899
T
he following advertisement appeared in the Christmas Bulletin, volume 30 Number 1034, published on Saturday, December 9, 1899. Cash registers are still in use in every shop - although somewhat more compact - but women’s corsets? - I think not seen quite so often in modern life.
Engineer’s Office, which they will get initialled at the place where they call. This initialled form will be the guarantee that their work has been efficiently performed.” Mr Henderson, in company with the assistant electrical engineer were also investigating the proposed new route for the Nambour to Kenilworth telephone line for floodwarning purposes, designed for the benefit of Gympie and low-lying stations on the Mary River. How different the flood warning systems are in 2014. The Mary River has 76 Flood Warning Rainfall Stations – 56 of which are automatic recording stations. There are 14 automatic flood height recording devices on the length of the Mary with three or four similar devices in each of the tributaries of the River. All of these devices are directly linked to the Bureau of Meteorology and can be checked minute by minute during flood time on http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/rain_ river.shtml
1898 had been the year of one of the biggest floods ever recorded in the Mary River at Kenilworth, when the river reached the height of 16.84 metres on January 10. In the aftermath of the record flooding in 1893 and 1898, Colonel J.M. Pennycuick of the Royal India Engineering College had been appointed as a consultant by the Queensland Government to prepare recommendations for flood mitigation programs. The Brisbane Courier (18.2.1899, page 6) referred to an interim report by the Colonel as well as questioning the circuitous manner of his information gathering before “he can decide as to the best course to be taken to mitigate the floods in Brisbane.” Mr J. B. Henderson of the Hydraulic Engineer’s Office was given the task of developing an efficient telephone reporting system at flood times. The newspaper article continued “all these lines are for the purpose of conveying timely flood warnings to the inhabitants in threatened localities. As soon as the water reaches a given point on the flood gauge, the person in charge will telephone to the receiver on the opposite side of the river, and instruct him to send out notices. This will be done by means of horseman engaged to ride up and down the river, and they will carry a printed notice prepared in the Hydraulic

All these technological advances still do not prevent flooding but it is a much faster flood warning system than a horseman riding from farm to farm carrying initialled notices. As far as the cash register and the corsets – they may still have their place in society – although I doubt there are many women seeking a 16 inch waist any more – those whalebones and laces! CWA HALL AUCTION
bout fifty interested community members attended the auction of the CWA Hall in Kenilworth on Saturday 21 June. The vendor began the bidding with a bid of $220 000. However, as there were no further bids, the building was passed in at $220 000. Auctioneer, Tom French said that, despite this, he felt confident that there was sufficient interest in the sale of the hall from various parties. These people could possibly come forward if they could arrange finance and negotiate a sale with Kenilworth Reality. A news item in a local paper recently suggested that there was not enough support from the community to retain the hall for the community. However, local opinion appears to support the retention of the hall in community hands. If the community had had enough time, funds could have been raised, possibly with support from the Sunshine Coast Council. In the short time frame set for the auction, it was difficult for such a small community to undertake this. Name Supplied.

ike to swim with humpback wales? Sunreef Mooloolaba is launching an Australian first from 6 July. This is a perfect opportunity to gain an experience you will probably never forget on this three hour round trip. Trade your holidays for cash? The Australian Industry Group is pushing for workers to be able to cashout annual leave once it tops four weeks. Four weeks of leave are still to be maintained, but workers would be able to exchange for cash any days over that figure. People power. Noosa Council are considering plans to establish “jury panels” of residents who could have a final say on major community issues. Could be interesting. Like Australian prawns? Research has shown that 70% of seafood consumed in Australia is imported from overseas because of lack of collaboration between the fisher, wholesalers and retailers. It’s the local product for me. Good on you Leonardo. Did you know that Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged $7 million towards ocean conservation? and that FIFA, the governing body of the World Cup, has so far received 30,500,000 “likes”? and that Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) admitted to being drunk during filming of the Harry Potter movies? ANZAC Day 2015. Sunshine Coast crochet designer Jenny King will take part in “planting” more than 5,000 crochet poppies at Melbourne’s Federation Square on ANZAC Day 2015. Would be nice to see something similar at our local memorials? Now that’s a lot of pets. A woman in China has revealed that she lives with 100,000 cockroaches which she calls her babies. I think I’ll stick to dogs or cats or horses or… anything but roaches. And it’s electric. Called “LiveWire,” it’s the sleek, batterypowered motorcycle due to join the Harley-Davidson family. While it lacks the typical loud rumbling sound of a traditional Harley, it will still have the iconic feel and character, but it could be years before it will hit the showrooms.

Kenilworth Chook chase 2014
T
he annual Chook Chase event will be held again this year over the weekend of 2 and 3 August. The beneficiaries of funds raised will be the following Kenilworth organisations: the SES, the swimming pool, First Response, the Hall Committee and the Mary Valley Voice. The breakdown of how funds will be allocated was decided at a previous meeting of the Chook Chase subcommittee called by the Hall Committee, when anyone interested in the event was invited to attend. Work has been undertaken for some months now by committee members towards arranging insurance, negotiating with National Parks and Forestry Queensland over track usage, attendance on the day by Queensland Ambulance, organising with the Marr Family for use of some of their land adjoining the showgrounds, preparation of the website to facilitate ease of distribution of nomination forms, and the allocating and processing of nominations. As has occurred in recent years, due to the popularity of the event it is expected that nominations will come in in record numbers and close very shortly after being posted on the internet. Unfortunately we can only accept 300 nominations due to restrictions imposed by National Parks and Forestry Queensland, and we have again restricted the junior events to 150. Plans are now underway in respect of planning meals and ordering food. An invitation is extended to anyone who would be prepared to offer a few hours of work on a voluntary basis for one of the beneficiary organisations on the days over which the event is conducted. Please contact Veronika Spicer on 5446 0427 to advise her of your willingness to support this community fundraising event. Your valuable assistance would be greatly appreciated. The support by the community is essential in the staging of this event, and we look forward to extending the hand of friendship to the riders and their families who come from many parts of the country.

mamoor State School P&C is pleased to announce that its third Bush Dance will be held on Saturday 16 August 2014 at the Amamoor Hall, Busby Street. Although normally staged as a biannual family function, this year will see a repeat performance due to the resounding success of last year’s dance, so rather than wait another year, Amamoor P&C have been persuaded to do it all again. Live music will be provided by the ever popular ‘Grey Cats’ dance band. Gordon will return to guide us through traditional group dances such as the Flying Pieman and Heel and Toe Polka so even the rawest beginner can join in on all the fun. Some old time favourites will also be included such as the Gypsy Tap and Pride of Erin. And what would an Amamoor State School function be without a fabulous array of delicious homebaked delights that the parents of the school are famous for?

I went to Melbourne to meet Dr. Jane Goodall to help the dingoes
I
watched as Dr Jane fell in love with Australia’s beautiful dingoes, seeing joy on her face as she sat down and interacted with our Australian icons. The renowned primatologist Jane Goodall - the only human ever accepted into chimpanzee society spoke about the importance of dingoes to the Australian ecosystem, and how the species could face extinction after decades of persecution. With the combined effort of the Ochre Project and The Jane Goodall Institute Australia, a seminar was arranged with a group of concerned environmentalist at the Melbourne Museum to meet Dr Jane and gain some positive attention on the dingoes of Australia on world Environment Day 5 June 2014, to discuss with Dr Jane the decades of persecution and focussing on the theme of the environment, how the dingo has worked in balance with biodiversity for many thousands of years. An Aboriginal, Yorta Yorta Victorian, Dennis Murray, his wife Ann and daughter Tegan, Dingo breeders from Lake Boga, brought his two beautiful dingoes, Warrigul and Katrina, as ambassadors and to meet Dr. Jane. Also speaking to Dr Jane was renowned dingo scientist Dr Arian Wallach winner of the Eureka Awards 2013, research that
supports proof the dingo’s value for the environment and the trophic cascade, as apex predators and her work on a cattle station where the dingoes are left to interact with the cattle without being shot, trapped or poisoned. Dr Arian and Dr Jane are strong advocate for compassionate conservation and the value of working to achieve a balance by seeing every side of the argument to encourage, preservation and acceptance of dingoes in areas they are most vulnerable. A film was shown by dingo scientist, Brad Purcell’s. His film “The Real Dingo” made for a TV Company Terra Mater show cased the dingoes. A very inspiring lady, Dr. Jane, talked of the importance of involving our younger generation and talked of her Roots and Shoots program that advocates this, working as a tree with its roots pushing up to branch out a message of conservation. Dr Jane asked the Ochre Project if they could facilitate and create an event for UN International Day of Peace on 21 September. Dr Jane asked who would facilitate this and I offered to do this with the Ochre Project and to be the hub in organising something for world Peace Day. The Ochre Project is presently in action organising this “NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR DINGOES 21 September 2014” Jane’s efforts to educate people about the ethical treatment of animals extend to all, speaking of working in unity, bringing education and awareness so that our future generations can also experience the dingo in the wild. After all what would Australia be without the dingo? Marie-Louise Sarjeant C.E.O. The Ochre Project

Rogo’s round-up
olunteers needed! The Kureelpa Hall Committee Annual General Meeting is coming up and now is the time to think about whether you’d like be a part of this important community organisation. The existing committee members have all held their positions for a number of years and all portfolios will become vacant at the AGM. New people with fresh ideas and enthusiasm are welcome to put their hand up to assist with continuing the management of this great community facility. The AGM will be held at the Kureelpa Hall on Tuesday, August 19 at 7.30pm. Please consider offering some valuable time for your community. Kenilworth illegal fill There has been some angst in Kenilworth recently over some illegal dumping of fill on the showgrounds site at the corner of Charles Street and Maleny Kenilworth Road by the Kenilworth Showground Hall and Recreation. Both myself and Council Officers have taken these community complaints very seriously. Engineering and compliance staff from council have assessed the situation and we will ensure that the necessary operational work permits are submitted and take into account potential flooding issues and vegetation concerns. The soil was placed at this site to enable a new grassed area to be included on this site for recreational purposes and events. Our flood mapping experts have determined that it won’t heighten the flooding risk in this area.
Budget bonus Among the really pleasing wins for Division 10 in the new 2014/15 Council budget is the funding we’ve received for important road upgrades and the sealing of dirt and gravel roads. Last year I tabled a petition recommending a 1.1km section of Delicia Road at Mapleton be sealed from the McLeod Road intersection to the Daymar Road intersection. Linda Garrett Park, Teralba and the Mapleton cemetery all sit along this stretch of Delicia Road and draw significant traffic to justify the sealing of this road surface. So I’m rapt for the Hinterland community that this $1million sealing project has been given the green light. See you in the Valley soon, Rogo. Cr Greg Rogerson

Life Chats …
ecently I was having a long-winded chat with one of my girlfriends on the telephone. She was describing the perils currently been faced with her second child, her only daughter, about to graduate from Grade 12. With three girls of my own, I was of course listening intently and then discreetly enquired as to the “cost” of the proposed evening in question. I am now of the pressing opinion we need to cross reference the word “graduate” in the dictionary. Usual interpretation of “graduate” states - “Someone who has received a degree on completing a course of study, as at University or College”. The updated cross reference to “graduate” which I believe is essential for parents, particularly with girls, should state – “EXPENSIVE”. Herewith, please find below the documented expenditure breakdown. Readers please ensure you are seated and anyone with heart conditions, I would strongly advise you think twice about proceeding with column reading. Dress $360, alterations to dress $95, shoes $70, jewellery $20, ticket to formal $120, limo $50, makeup $30, hair $50, spray tan $20, corsage $35, photographer $60, clutch $25, nails $60. TOTAL = $995 To say I was literally gobsmacked with the costs presented was a true understatement. More to the point was my concern about who drives this night to such dizzy heights of expense. Is it the fashion and beauty industry, the girls themselves being caught up in peer pressure to present themselves to society in a certain vein, or parents abating fuss and pouting from the graduating princess? Don’t get me wrong. I get the desire to want to look and feel amazing on a special night. My ultimate concern with impressionable young women today is the attachment to an expensive price tag. Shining beauty from within costs a big fat zero. Maybe our girls just need this subtle reminder. Rest assured, when graduation time arrives at our Obi house, I will certainly be supportive of my girls’ ultimate decisions for the night. Mind you, I will strongly encourage my girls to ponder the night and really get in sync with their graduation journey. I shall also lovingly advise that they will score the highest marks for their night from their parents by being their true beautiful selves without outlandish spending. Mothers can have dreams and wishes. Surely? “Just be yourself, there is no one better.” - Taylor Swift MM of Obi

Sunshine Coast Destination appoints new Tourism Manager
unshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) has appointed a new Tourism Development Manager, Susan Maynard. Susan (pictured below) has extensive experience in both the tourism and training environments and has worked in the tourism industry for over 20 years in retail, wholesale, accommodation and more recently with Tourism and Events Queensland. Susan was Channel Manager of the hospitality chain, Oaks Hotels and Resorts and was responsible for ensuring the group’s online presence translated into sales. Following this success, Susan moved into the position of Sales and Marketing Manager liaising with all state sales and marketing staff, contracting with industry bodies, suppliers, corporate and other guests, as well as conducting market research. Most recently, Susan was an integral part of the very successful Digital Ready Program (99% satisfaction rating) for Tourism and Events Queensland as a Digital Coach. Over the life of the program she travelled around the state developing and improving the digital knowledge within the tourism industry to strengthen digital consumer communication and digital marketing performance. CEO of SCDL, Simon Ambrose, welcomed Susan’s appointment, “Sunshine Coast Destination has embarked on an ambitious target of increasing visitor numbers and overnight visitor expenditure by 2020. We as a body cannot achieve this alone and require a collective approach with our tourism industry. Susan brings considerable expertise in both engaging with industry and the digital space. Her enthusiasm for all things tourism is obvious and she is passionate about assisting tourism operators to get results. “Susan will work in collaboration with industry and members in the Southern (Kawana to Caloundra), Hinterland and Gympie to Cooloola regions. She will also be responsible for the implementation and management of regional SCDL programs to grow tourism (in particular the niche of Golf and the 2018 Commonwealth Games). She is the direct link with Destination Advisory Panels and other stakeholder groups within these areas of the Sunshine Coast.”

IMBIL POLICE BRIEFS ith the fire season almost upon us, it is an opportune time to look at the law in relation to lighting fires.
The Fire and Rescue Service Act makes it illegal to light a fire without a ‘Permit to Light Fire’ issued by a fire warden. Under nuisance provisions of the Local Government Act, a local government may also have in place a local law restricting or prohibiting the lighting of a fire in part or all of the local government area. An application for a ‘Permit to Light Fire’ is made through your local fire warden. Contact details for fire wardens are available through the Fire Warden Finder on the Rural Fire Service website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Following receipt of your application, the fire warden may impose conditions on the permit to reduce unwanted risk or nuisance to other people, property or the environment. The fire warden may refuse to issue a permit if they believe that appropriate safety measures cannot be reasonably achieved or that neighbouring owners/ occupiers have not been given enough time to raise concerns about the intended fire. Fires that are exempt from requiring a Permit to Light Fire are: • Fires that are less than two metres in any direction. Note: These fires are not exempt during a declared Fire Danger Period and at those times, a fire permit must be obtained from a fire warden. • Fires lit outdoors in a properly prepared fireplace for the purpose of cooking (e.g. BBQ and campfires). In this instance, it is the responsibility of the person lighting or maintaining the fire to ensure adequate precautions are taken to prevent the spread of the fire. • Certain fires used by primary producers and for industrial purposes. Most local governments provide alternative methods (other than fire) for the disposal of vegetation and waste materials such as refuse collections or disposal of green waste at a council recycling centre. A Fire Danger Period can be declared by the Commissioner of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service during parts of the year when conditions make the control and management of fires difficult and communities are at increased risk of bush fire. During a Fire Danger Period, there are some changes to the requirements for issue of a permit and to those fires that may be exempt. A declared Fire Danger Period is advised through local media and on the Rural Fire Service website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Anyone found responsible for lighting fires without a permit where one was required, can be prosecuted. Prosecution can also occur if a person is found responsible for lighting a fire that breaches local law or the Environment Protection Act. If there is a high fire danger, the Commissioner for the QFRS may issue a Local Fire Ban restricting certain fires. When a Local Fire Ban is issued, no fires may be lit other than those specifically referred to in the Fire Ban Notice. Terry Kennedy Sergeant
