KENILWORTH SCC NEWS enilworth State Community College has been chosen to be one of the first schools to benefit from the Prep teacher aide boost announced for 2013. The Queensland Government will boost teacher aide resources in 600 Queensland state school Prep classes. Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek have announced a $54 million program that will enable the equivalent of a fulltime teacher aide in each Prep classroom in 150 Prep classes each year from 2013, growing over four years. In 2013 a total of 154 Prep classes in 107 schools will receive additional teacher aide hours from the start of the new school year. The Prep classes were chosen in areas of greatest need to support schools in low socio-economic and rural and remote communities. Prep enrolments at the start of the 2013 school year will determine the exact allocation of teacher aide hours to the selected schools. More personalised attention from Prep teachers will allow students to better progress their reading, writing and social skills at a formative time in their development. Quality early childhood education has lasting positive impacts on a child’s health, learning and behaviour.
Kenilworth Kids Celebrate Great Behaviour
O
n Friday 25 May the students of Kenilworth SCC celebrated their great behaviour by participating in the rewards day.
The students had lots of fun participating in all of the activities. Students were able to make their own pizzas and pesto with Mrs Nassiep and Cynthia, ride the bikes from the bike shed with our Chaplain Boyd Eime and Mr Nightingale and have fun in the library with Tracey. The students are looking forward to the end of term rewards day and going to see ‘The Lorax’ in 3D at the Maroochydore cinema. Photo above: Zeke and Jamison. Left: Ruby, Aleisha, Kyle and Jenjira.

NAPLAN Breakfast at KSCC
he scene is the same throughout Australia during three days in the middle of May every year – nervous and sometimes panicked students waiting anxiously to sit the NAPLAN tests. This year, at the Kenilworth State Community College, we decided to take the stress out of the nation-wide exams by putting breakfast on the menu for the entire school for the three days of testing. Students were treated to bacon and eggs, toast, breakfast cereals and pancakes. The mornings were full of laughter and fun with everyone joining in breakfast together. This resulted in relaxed and happy students. As one year 3 student, sitting NAPLAN for the first time said after his first exam, “That was quite fun, no pressure at all.” Mission accomplished!
students had a great time competing against the students from the other small schools.

ow exciting! Kenilworth Pony Club held its first event of the year on Sunday 20 May, an Unofficial Beginners Dressage Day. There were over 50 entrants from Pony Clubs all over the Sunshine Coast. It was a great day with beginner riders having the opportunity to ask all of the awkward questions, the ones that you think you should already know! And an opportunity for experienced riders to introduce their ‘Green’ horses to the world of Dressage. Thank you also to all of those businesses who donated raffle prizes, Kenilworth Rural Supplies, Bickfords, Topshots Fun Park, Bellingham Maze, and Aussie World.
Two of our First Responders have been awarded Ten Year Medals for their contribution to the Community. Linda Green was the first responder based at Kenilworth. Linda initially responded by herself using her own car for a considerable time until other people came on board with the initiative. Linda has on several occasions, alone with no communications to assist her, saved lives through her clinical and people skills. Linda has made an outstanding contribution in her role with the Kenilworth First Responder Group. She has maintained a high profile, and working relationship to achieve her goal of providing a high level of patient care in the community and her selflessness, loyalty and humble demeanour at all times is the stuff of which volunteers are built on. Glenys Pearson became a volunteer in 2001 in Kenilworth First Response. Over the past decade Glenys has responded many times. To be able to continue in such a demanding role for the time she has, Glenys has been an example to others in the community of what volunteering is about. Glenys’s service to Kenilworth First Response included being the first president of the group. She has since moved to Maleny and taken up the challenging position of coordinator for CPR training with Maleny Local Ambulance Committee and is no longer part of Kenilworth First Response. We thank her for her past service and wish her well in her future endeavours.

MARY VALLEY
S
New powers needed to resolve Mary Valley bungle
pecial powers may be needed to clean up the mess left behind by the Bligh Labor Government in the Mary Valley. Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jeff Seeney, is preparing a submission for Cabinet as he works to resolve the bungled finances and land buy-up by the Beattie and Bligh Governments in their failed bid to build the Traveston Dam. Mr Seeney said the web of incompetence left by Labor had proven to be more complicated than first thought. “It’s hard to believe just how incapable of running the State the Beattie and Bligh Governments were to have left the Mary Valley in the state it’s in today,” Mr Seeney said.
“The LNP Government may have to introduce legislation to bypass planning land sales policies, just to unravel the problems. “There are complex leases on land with some parts of properties covered by leases of up to 30 years and other parts of the sa me property covered by only short-term arrangements. “Land parcels that rely on irrigation entitlements to make them economically viable have been separated from those water rights. “We may have to amalgamate some holdings and deamalgamate others. “It’s certainly not a simple process and Cabinet will consider the matter in coming weeks.” The Deputy Premier said the Newman Government’s aim was to find a solution as fast as possible to re-establish the Valley economy and communities.

our wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul. I never thought I could ride myself on a motorbike. I always thought this luxury was only reserved to men in search of excitement in a womenless world! Let me tell you that since I got my license (last month) this idea has all changed, so has my perception of being and moving on a road on two wheels. Thanks to my husband first (experienced motorbike rider for more than 20 years) and Mark Langford from Queensland Motorcycle School in Maroochydore (see details below). They both in their own way taught me the enjoyment of riding a bike, being safe first and feeling free second. And if you are not aware, there are more and more of us girls on the roads. When I did the Qride test, out of five people attending the course three were women! And Mark is a pro when it comes to talking to women. To all the women out there who would like to step into a new world of freedom on the magnificient roads of the Mary Valley, I can only say, Go for it! It is worth the effort.

KENILWORTH his machine served the Sims family at Mary-Land, Gheerulla for more than 30 years. On Sunday May 20 at the Sunshine Coast Heritage Showcase at Pomona many visitors helped “turn the washing as the Sims family did in 1924. Winnie Sims 1924 diary paints an interesting picture of the amount of energy required to wash for the household. Each load required 45 minutes of “turning. Monday January 21 - We washed, not an extra big one except for 17 pairs of trousers. Sunday 27 - We got ready for church.  We had 19 for dinner. Monday 28 - We washed. It was very hot. We only had 14 pairs of trousers to wash. Monday February 18 - I had to put new padding on the lid and mind both tubs. We got the washing done before dinner - it was a big one. Thursday 21 - Dad, Mum, Ern, Bert and Ed got up and saw the eclipse. We did a couple of lines full of washing. Monday 25 - Washing day - 20 pairs of trousers. Harry Gordon’s lorry brought the mail home. Tuesday March 4 (Shrove Tuesday) - We had no pancakes. We had a big wash. Bert turned three out of five lots. Monday 10 - The washing wasn’t extra big, only 15 pairs of pants. Friday May 2 - We did a heavy days work, washing and ironing and cleaning. I can’t help feeling excited about tomorrow. I haven’t told anyone about the ring (Arthur Tanner and Winnie’s engagement day). Tuesday October 7 - We did the washing. Both tubs were leaking dreadfully. I struggled through the first lot 16 sheets - then we went and borrowed Hannah’s tubs. The telephone instruments came. (Gheerulla Exchange installed in the Sims Home in 1924) Monday December 1 - We prepared the washing for the morrow. We (Arthur and Winnie) were studying house plans (the home built in 1925 still stands next to the Bakery in Elizabeth St). Tuesday 2 - We had a tremendous wash. Mum ironed the bed valances etc. and hung them.
Wednesday 3 - Ironing all morning. Dick and Henry Fritz went to Eumundi for the Concert Grand piano for the hall (Kenilworth Farmer’s Assembly Hall – now Gheerulla Hall). It was rather a top heavy load and was a bit dangerous. Monday 8 - I was up at 5.30am washing. We had a big wash and didn’t get done till after dinner. I put a jumper of Mum’s in the wash with stitching on it and it ran. Monday 15 - Dad was mending the wash tubs so we had to leave the washing. We got a parcel from Cullinanes. Ed got a fountain pen at the break-up. The Lily-White Washing Machine (see photo below with Lenore Meldrum) may be seen at the Kenilworth Museum any Sunday between 10 am-2 pm. OUR COMMUNITY PERMACULTURE NOOSA presents MIKE STASSE “TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY”
M
ike Stasse will be at Memorial Hall, Maple St, Cooroy (next to RSL) on Thursday 21 June 2012 from 7pm. Mike Stasse has turned 1 ½ acres at Cooran, which once only grew grass, into a self-sufficient, sustainable, permaculture property. In about 2003 Mike and Glenda Stasse moved to Cooran on an east/west facing vacant block with no house, but with a wonderful view of Mount Cooroy. Since that time Mike has designed and built their house, which requires little or no cooling in summer or heating in winter to stay a pleasant temperature all year round. Solar panels provide an income and he has used off-theshelf as well as innovative ideas to make the house as sustainable as possible. Outside there is a large permaculture garden and vegie patch, chooks, ducks, and even goats, that provide milk, which means their own homemade cheese. The use of grey water, composting systems and swales means they hardly ever have to water the garden and all the fertiliser needed is produced on site. Come along and hear Mike talk about his journey ‘towards self-sufficiency’. Also CATH MANUEL will be giving a short talk about how to grow bananas. Cath educates and supports people to gain the skills and knowledge to grow, harvest and cook their own food, using organic gardening and permaculture methods. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. For further information phone Judith on 5471 1982.
Medicine from our Gardens
T
here are four persimmon trees in my orchard, each planted as a memorial to my Scottish mother-in-law. One of them finally has fruit on it, just asking to be picked, so today I think we’ll test to see if they’re ready. Persimmons are an Asian fruit, which are perfectly suited to the growing conditions in our area (in fact there is a large persimmon commercial orchard right here in the Mary Valley). They are an absolute powerhouse of nutrition, which is relatively unknown to many Australians. There has been some very interesting research done into these bright orange globes at the Kongju National University in South Korea, as to their effectiveness for overcoming a hangover. Now some of you are sitting up straighter! It is believed that the digestion of persimmons reduces the density of the alcohol in the system, which results in a faster sobering up action, reducing the risk of a hangover. Powerful antioxidants aid the liver and the high fibre content pushes the alcohol out of the system. There has also been some evidence found that eating raw persimmons helps to reduce a hangover headache. In addition to the fascinating information above, persimmons are an incredibly high fibre, low calorie food, which makes them ideal for anybody watching their weight. They are loaded up with vitamin C, which not only boosts the immune system but is also a powerful antioxidant. B vitamins rank highly as well, which are needed for a huge number of metabolic functions. There is so much more to persimmons, but that’s enough to wet the taste buds! No need for a recipe this time, persimmons are definitely best eaten raw. Gabby Scott Belli Park Chef and Naturopath

OUR COMMUNITY Australians urged to register for National Tree Day
P
lanet Ark is urging individuals, teachers, council staff, librarians, businesses and members of the community, religious, sporting and green groups to register and run activities for Schools Tree Day on Friday 27 July or National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July 2012. Volunteers who register a school or public activity with Planet Ark before Friday 25 May will go into the draw to win a number of prizes, including eco-book packs and magazine subscriptions. A Tree Day site can be in a playground, a sports field, around a place of worship, Scout or Guide Hall, in a local park or foreshore or in your own backyard and can include undertaking important maintenance on previous planting projects. Planet Ark spokesperson Rebecca Gilling says that National Tree Day is a great day to get outside and have fun while doing something good for the local environment. “If you don’t have a planting site, there are a number of tree-related activities you can do,” says Gilling. “To be a National Tree Day site coordinator, all you need to have is some organisational skills and be enthusiastic.” National Tree Day activities can also include running treethemed book readings or art exhibitions, tree giveaways, host fundraising morning teas, or joining forces with your local Toyota Dealer to organise a site.
Gilling said that site coordinators don’t need to be experts, as Planet Ark provides ideas and assistance to help site coordinators make their event a success. John Salmon, from Bateau Bay Bushcare, is a passionate advocate for the event, having seen the direct benefits it has brought to his community. “I’ve done every single National Tree Day since it began,” he says. “We had a coastal tree dune planting event last year and planted over 1,000 trees, shrubs and bushes. About 60 people showed up – it was great day!” Participation in National Tree Day helps Australians to make a difference within their community and to understand the benefits of tree planting to address important environmental issues such as the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity, erosion and long-term carbon offsetting. This year there is also a focus on human health and the well-documented benefits that getting outside amongst trees and nature can bring to families and individuals. Celebrating its 17th year in 2012, National Tree Day has resulted in the planting of more than 17 million native trees and shrubs since its inception. To find out more about National Tree Day, please visit treeday.planetark.org, call the Hotline on 1300 88 5000 or visit your local participating Toyota Dealership. National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in partnership with Toyota and its Dealer Network, which provides on the ground support at local community tree planting sites Australia wide.

MARY VALLEY
R
Imbil POLICE BRIEFS
ecently a very successful Crimestoppers Charity Bowls Day was held at the Imbil Bowls Club raising just under $2000. About 45 community members attended the very enjoyable social day and took part in two games of bowls and partook of a delicious BBQ lunch. Raffles were conducted and everyone was very generous with their spending. The money was handed over to Gympie Crimestoppers on the day. The day was organised by Joy Butler with the help of some willing workers. The Imbil Bowls Club provided the venue and the lunch free of charge and businesses in the Mary Valley and Gympie were extremely generous in their donation of raffle prizes. This was the fifth Crimestoppers Bowls Day organised at the Imbil Bowls Club by Joy and her band and over $10000 has been raised in that time – an extraordinary achievement. Operating throughout Australia, Crime Stoppers has become an integral part of policing with the information gathered and supplied by the community essential to crime fighting and crime prevention. You, the citizen, form the foundation of a local Crime Stoppers program. Crime Stoppers relies on members of the public to call when they have information that may help stop, solve or prevent criminal activity in the community. Callers are never asked to identify themselves and there is no equipment in Crime Stoppers offices that records voices or traces telephone numbers. Anonymity is guaranteed. Members of the community who call Crime Stoppers receive a code number that allows them to claim a reward, if desired, once an arrest has been made. Community members also participate in the day-today operations and financial support of the program. Volunteer directors serve on the Crime Stoppers board and are responsible for operating the non-profit corporation, raising funds and approving appropriate reward payments when crimes are solved. Members of the public also support Crime Stoppers at public events and through various other fundraising activities. You could be the newest member of a growing force of like-minded citizens who are actively making a difference, by helping Crime Stoppers to deliver a safer Queensland for all. As a community volunteer organisation Crime Stoppers Queensland is reliant on Volunteers offering their support, passion and dedication to assist our program with achieving its mission of ‘A safe empowered community’. Since beginning operations in 1989, Crime Stoppers Queensland has received over 608,000 phone calls and website reports. This information has led to over 55,700 criminal charges and has helped to solve 21 murders and 19 attempted murders in the State. Anonymous reports have also helped to recover in excess of $9.9 million in stolen property over the last 22 years. We depend on your support to help our community initiatives to succeed, to empower our services and to drive our fundraising activities.
Imbil and Mary Valley Mothers Day Special Fundraising Fiesta

n the early hours of Sunday 6 May, the sun showed its first rays of light over Imbil, already 18 exhibitors were busy erecting their gazebos and setting up their stalls for the “ Mothers Day Special Fiesta” event. They came from all points of the Mary Valley, and even beyond, to bring their support to us. We had P&C Amusements who came from Caboolture to dare us to climb their tower, Lo and Behold, the beautiful Kelly and Russel Knight and King, and all their wonderful talented Muso friends, who came to entertain us for the day; they didn’t ask for a thing, except to support us and to make our day a special one. Also thank you to our S.E.S. boys and their sausage sizzle. Thank you to such community minded people who donated their goods for our fundraising raffles, myself, Robyn Taylor of “Simply Unique Clothing’, the Neighbourhood Watch and the Childrens Christmas Party. Thank you all again for your wonderful gifts, goods, and vouchers that you so generously gave us to raffle. Spice up your garden!
unshine Coast Council is proud to present free Fun with Herbs sessions throughout July and August 2012 at library locations across the Coast. Presenter Heike Farkas shares her passion for utilising garden herbs to make natural remedies, infusions, ointments, lotions and potions. Be inspired as you watch, listen and learn from Heike as she demonstrates and enlightens you with the many and varied uses of herbs. The emphasis on healthy living and organic food has us returning in droves to organic produce and adopting a ‘fresh is best’ approach to what we eat. Not only can the humble herb bring a range of flavours to your food but the health and medicinal benefits are numerous. Investigate nature’s own solutions to ailments and have fun inventing some herbal medicine remedies. he votes are all counted and the results are in, I am your Councillor for Division 8 for the next four years. A huge thank you to all my family and friends who gave me their support and assistance during the campaign. It has been a long journey but the results were worth it, so now it’s back to work for me. The Deputy Premier, Mr Jeff Seeney, visited the Mary Valley in May and it was very promising in what he said to the attendees at the meeting. The next four years will be a challenge for the residents of the Mary Valley, they plan to sell the Government owned properties over the next two years. The Mary Valley Re-vitalisation is one of my portfolios with this term of Council so I will be focusing on issues and projects concerning the Mary Valley during this term of council. The annual fete was held at Carters Ridge in the Ridgewood Hall recently. The day was great and it seems that every year just gets bigger and better. With more exhibits and more people attending on the day, so make sure you mark the day on your calendars for next year. A huge congratulations to the organisers on such a fabulous day. The official launch of the Mary Valley Country, “Come out to Play” website was held in Kandanga Bowls Club on Monday 30 April. The night was a complete success and I urge all local businesses to list their business on the web site and also get acquainted with the site as I’m sure this will be a great marketing tool for the future of tourism in the area. Google Mary Valley Blue Light and take a look at our Blue Light disco page, please be sure to ‘like’ us so that we can have a place on the social media page. The next Blue Light disco will be held in the Kandanga Public Hall on Friday night 8 June starting at 6.30pm. www.nhwq.com is the official website for Neighbourhood Watch, our Imbil Rural Watch is a part of this association and meet on the first Monday of each month at the Kandanga Public Hall at 7.30pm. In May our group raised $33.30 with a hot pot dinner, this money has gone towards
the Cancer Council for research. Imbil Rural Watch had a special fundraising day for Crimestoppers at the end of April with a fun game of bowls at the Imbil Bowls Club, there were lots of raffle draws and many other prizes too. A huge thanks to Joy and her band of willing helpers for a great day of fun and also a big thanks to those people who donated prizes on the day. The Imbil CWA had a special luncheon for the “Year of the Farmer” in May. They had a list of speakers, one of whom was Garry Rozynski, who gave us all an insight into how the life of a farmer has changed dramatically over the past decade and beyond. The day was very well attended, congratulations to all those who organised the day. The Valley Bees group is going along well with the exhibit at the Gympie Show being of great interest to the showgoers this year. This will be the very first time that ‘Sugar Bag’ honey (native bee honey) will be exhibited and judged at a show. The group meets at 1.30pm on Sunday 10 June at the Kandanga Public Hall and Newbees are welcome to attend. The Annual Mary River Festival is being held again this year and plans are underway to make it a huge success as in past years. Note the date on your calendar, Saturday 10 November, all day and into the evening, with stalls, music and lots of variety of food. The festival is held on Jack Spicer park (Rec Grounds) at Kandanga. Remember, volunteers make our area a wonderful place to live, so if you have a couple of spare hours a month, why not lend a hand an volunteer, it’s worth it!
