KENILWORTH KENILWORTH STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE LOCAL CHAPLAINCY COMMITTEE and CHAPLAINCY SERVICES

ADVENTURES IN COMMUNITY FILMMAKING

T

he Local Chaplaincy Committee of KSCC meets once a month and is responsible for the overview of Chaplaincy services at the school. This group is made up of our Chaplain - Boyd Eime, School Principal - Sue Brieschke, two parent representatives and two community members. The Chaplain’s role is varied, and includes providing social and emotional support to students and families, running sporting activities as part of the Active After-Schools Communities Program (with parental help), assisting in the classroom, and interacting with students during break time. In addition, breakfasts of pancakes and juice are available to students each Tuesday morning before school, and the committee and Boyd are grateful for the kind assistance given voluntarily by community members to provide this service to our students. The committee also wishes to extend sincere thanks for the generous donations from the combined churches’ services, which are held on the fifth Sundays of the month. In conjunction with contributions from the school’s P&C Association and some excess government funds, a percentage of the churches’ donations were used recently to purchase four table tennis tables for use in the Active After-Schools Communities Program and during school time. We know that the students of the school are gaining much pleasure from this equipment, and we are grateful for the contributions made from both the P&C and community members at the Ecumenical Services. The Local Chaplaincy Committee endeavours to organise fundraising activities (eg, bike rides, bush walks, bowls) whenever these can be fitted around school, sporting and other family commitments. Our committee meets on the second Friday of each month (during school terms) and would very much welcome anyone who would like to be involved in the work of the Local Chaplaincy Committee. For any enquiries regarding School Chaplaincy you can directly contact KSCC School Reception on 5440 0555 or Pam Engle, Chairperson of the Local Chaplaincy Committee on 5446 9173.

F

ollowing the very successful film-making workshops held at Kenilworth earlier this year, the excellent work produced by the students will be showcased in The Timeline Festival of Short Films planned as the spectacular grand finale to this years Kenilworth Celebrates! Arts Festival. The Timeline Festival features the work of community filmmakers in capturing, preserving and showcasing vital elements of our “Social History - Yesterdays, Todays and Tomorrows”. Director of the festival and veteran film-maker Kev. Franzi is a great enthusiast for community film-making. “Video film-makers are the story tellers of the 21st century. So, whatever your interests may be, recording our social history gives us the broadest possible spectrum of subjects and stories for our cameras to explore. The stories community film-makers capture all have relevance and value to someone or some group in our society. These video films become a resource of great value now and in the future, they are pictures with a purpose”, he said. The Timeline Festival aims to encourage and promote high quality video production that will entertain, inform and inspire. The festival will then showcase that work, and promote its distribution and archiving. To quote Benjamin Britten “Music means nothing! – unless it is performed”. But you must capture that “music” (video) first - that’s your job! Learn to do it well. The festival will be screened in the “Roxy Cinema” at the Kenilworth Museum on 29 September and 2 October. Entries close on 27 August. The prize pool is $1500. Kev. KENILWORTH A New Sunshine Coast Council Project - Mary River Parks Development

T

he Sunshine Coast Council have allocated funds for the design of two parks on the Mary River at Kenilworth. One is the Isaac Moore Park on the right of the bridge on the Kenilworth- Eumundi Road from Kenilworth. The other is on the vacant land behind the police station. The Chamber of Commerce proposes to establish a subcommittee, Kenilworth Parks Group to organise community action such as future working bees, fundraising and liaison with council. If you are interested in the development of these parks a public meeting will be held on site, behind the Kenilworth police station at 2pm on 17 June.

Chamber Chatter

Michael finished his report by saying “Together we as a community have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to advance the whole of the Kenilworth community. I implore each and every one of you to remain focused, positive and constructive in your comments and actions over the next year. We are at a turning point in the history of Kenilworth – let’s go forward together and build the community that we want.” Chamber meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6pm in the Arts Council Building behind the Kenilworth Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you are interested in your community or have “things” that you would like implemented, the Chamber is the place to start. Come and share your ideas and get involved. Yes we do cater for both the business community and citizens, both are vital to the wellbeing of any community.

Thank you to Peter Wellington MP for chairing the election and we welcome the new committee.

Mike Blackall • Pat Yates • Veronika Spicer • Di Donovan Peter Cusack • Viv Bloomer (Assistant Secretary) Michael presented his annual report thanking the committee members for their efforts for the past year. The Chamber spent most of the year concentrating on how to build a sustainable community with an emphasis on long term population growth. This culminated in the very successful community meetings that were held earlier this year. The next step in the process will be the formation of a working party to draft a blueprint for the future of Kenilworth. This draft document will then be presented to another community meeting for discussion and amendment. The final version will then become a working document which will take Kenilworth forward for the next 10-15 years. The Kenilworth Information and Craft Centre is an ongoing major project that is operated by the Chamber. Last year it had 10772 visitors through the door. Thanks must go to the small band of willing volunteers who provide a high level of friendly service to all our visitors and

The Kenilworth swimming pool is over 30 years old, built at that time by the Kenilworth community for the Kenilworth community. After so many years of use, the pool is now needing loving tender care. This translates into dollars for maintenance and renewal of certain items. The SCRC have been helping with grant funds and we as a community are grateful. Kenilworth College and most of the community use the pool for training and recreation during the hot summer months. The committee are always struggling for funds, as anything to do with swimming pools is always very expensive. So again thanks to the Council and the community of Kenilworth for supporting us.

KENILWORTH Kenilworth and District Historical Association Incorporated

These pages would be collated into book form and remain on display in the museum, indexed by decades. They would also be copied and attached to the website as a digest of “modern” history. Special thanks go the small band of workers supporting the Museum, particularly Kevin and Jenette Franzi, Clem and Olive Hassall, Cec and Val Pearson, Fay Miller and Beryl Laffey.

A

t the recent Annual General Meeting the following report was presented:

2009 was a year of consolidation for the Museum with the completion of the disabled access paths and the installation of the much appreciated air conditioning in the Roxy Room. Special thanks must go to the Owens family for their generous donation of the unit and to Col Gross, electrician, for his time so freely given and the excellent work by Kimbell Refrigeration in handling the installation process. One of the highlights of 2009 was the selection of Hannah Sims letter to her husband Richard, written in 1903/1904 as one of the 200 letters representing the development of the Australian Nation by the Australia Post Committee, being one of 2000 submissions, and one of only three Queensland letters selected. A copy of the original letter and the letter of acceptance from Australia Post is on display in the new Tanner’s Store exhibition in Alf Sims House. Another highlight has been the erection of two panels of the post and rail fence from the original Kenilworth School, with the valued assistance of John Rodwell and Shane Smith. The continued success of the website in linking family historians with a connection to the district is pleasing. Through these contacts we have become aware of gaps in the recording of the more recent history of the district and the many contributions made by people no longer in the area. To this end I would like to launch a new project to be known as Gifts from the Past where this museum gathers information from former residents of their memories of living here. Interested parties may submit a page of information which should include: • Full names of the former residents and their family members; • The years they lived in the district; • The organisations they contributed to; • Their memories of events in the district; • And if possible a photograph from that era.

The support of so many of the Kenilworth businesses is greatly appreciated, particularly Irene Symons from Kenilworth News, who markets copies of Hinka Booma for the museum, Kenilworth Country Foods who advertise the museum to tour groups, Leanne Kehoe from McGinns Restaurant who makes connection between tour groups and the museum, the Information Centre who provides such excellent service to the visiting public especially when they send tourists to the museum; Francesca and Joe Monteleone from the Bakery who displayed the recent article on the history of the bakery on their coffee shop tables and Liz Fryberg from the Friendly Grocer who continued the “do not throw away” tradition of the district and was able to donate the original brown paper roll holder from Tanner’s Store for the display. Without their continuing support this museum would not be able to open its doors and offer ‘Living History’ to the visiting public. Thanks also to Cr Paul Tatton who has freely made his time available when approached and dealt patiently with all the issues brought to his attention. The support of my husband as secretary has been invaluable throughout the year and is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately the costs of opening our doors to the public and the maintenance of the building and grounds have increased so markedly in the past 12 months. The association has to seriously consider an increase to our entrance fees from $3 to $4 per person and $9 for a family group. We have struggled to maintain our low prices in an endeavour to make our history available to all – but the museum, as an entity, will not survive at the present rate of income and expenditure without additional funds. The work of Peter Collinson for his on the conversion of our Looking Back Number two slide/tape presentation to DVD was acknowledged. This project was funded by a grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for which this association is most grateful. Councillor Tatton was presented with a copy which, under the requirements of the grant is to be retained in the Council Heritage Library. Those in attendance enjoyed a showing of the new DVD and were presented with bottles of jam made from home grown rosellas as a measure of thanks for their support. MARY VALLEY EW MEMBERS were welcomed by Mary Valley Inc this year with several organisations joining. Phil Jensen is the representative for the Mary Valley Show Society, Debbie Williams from Imbil QCWA and Marina Taylor from the Red Cross. Kenilworth CWA has also requested a membership kit and MVI anticipates their company in the next month or so. Both the Mary Valley and Kenilworth chambers of commerce as representational organisations in the valley are included in the remodelled structure which provides a broader mix of communities and organisations and thus an improved representation of the valley. MVI now has two representative streams, one for communities or villages, and one for regional representative organisations. BRUCE HIGHWAY BILLBOARD PROMOTION for the Mary Valley has been achieved through MVI partnering with Gympie Cooloola Tourism, who have committed a Bruce Highway billboard site for 12 months and Bishopp© signs who have given a major discount to the development of the “skins”. MVI wishes to thank our partners for their contribution to the Mary Valley. This application was developed to support the new Mary Valley Country – come out to play promotional campaign, and will be utilised when the marketing committee has developed marketing concepts. THE MARY VALLEY PROJECT COORDINATOR, Kaili ParkerPrice, was thanked for her roles over the past few years including MV BEAR coordinator and as the Mary Valley Project Coordinator. Kaili has been integral to the successful implementation of numerous projects which have benefited the whole Mary Valley, its communities and businesses. The group acknowledged the loss to the Mary Valley of this position as it will no longer be supported by Government agency after June 30. This position does not work for MVI but liaises closely with the organisation due to MVI’s valley-wide charter and involvement in community, tourism and business projects, linking with Government and Council. MVI has recognised the loss to the valley with the cessation of this position and has been lobbying Ministers, Community Futures Task Force, Gympie Regional Council for advocacy and the Premier, all to no avail as apparently there is no funding available at State level. The position has also been integral to assisting the Renewal process which will also feel the impact of no support services in this area. This is a matter of concern for the whole community. If you feel strongly about this matter please contact MVI with your support as we are still considering possible solutions. THE RENEWAL TEAM will be advised by MVI of its intention to continue on existing projects and to work in partnership with email projects@themaryvalley.com.au

Mary Valley Inc.

other groups to take major projects forward after the June 10 launch of the Mary Valley Community and Economic Plan. MVI as a valley wide organisation has successfully worked in partnership with community, Council and Government, previously managing or auspicing projects. MVI will have an information stand at the June 10 launch if anyone is interested in gathering more information about MVI and its role in the valley. WWW.THEMARYVALLEY.COM.AU continues to be developed by MVI as the Mary Valley website promoting business, tourism and community. The Mary Valley Business and Community Directories are now uploaded and available online. Organisations are encouraged to check the details and make contact if necessary. The website is being continually upgraded and improved so keep an eye on this space and provide feedback if you have suggestions. MVI meeting notes will soon be made available online. BUS SHELTER PUBLIC ART PROJECT has been delayed waiting for repairs to occur to the shelters. Mary Valley children will be involved in this project developing art work under the guidance of a professional artist. It should be a great showcase of the art created by valley children and will brighten up the roadside through the valley when complete. AGED CARE REPORT advice at the last meeting was that MVI has located a comprehensive “Aged Pension Guide” and will work with MP Warren Truss to produce more copies for circulation in the valley. MALENY-KENILWORTH ROAD campaign has asked MVI for its support in writing to MP Andrew Powell acknowledging that the road is a major feeder road into the Mary Valley and as such affects tourism, community and business issues. SCARECROW FESTIVAL is once again on the calendar for the Mary Valley townships with the festival timing to coincide with Mary Valley and Kenilworth shows through to Kenilworth Celebrates. Contacts are sought for each town and everyone is encouraged to revitalise this festival throughout the whole valley. Call Graham Miller at Kenilworth on 5446 0100 if you are interested. MVI CONTACTS: Phone 0447 053 244 or email projects@ themaryvalley.com.au to find an MVI rep from your town.

MARY VALLEY Brownwater Classic celebrates its 21st ON JULY 3

Our front cover story “The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created first in mind, next in will, then in activity. The future is not a place to which we are going; it is a place we are creating. The paths to the future are not found, but made and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination” (John Schaar) If you would like to be a part of creating your and our future then please join us at our monthly meetings, held on the third Tuesday of each month.

E

ach year, in the blackbean forest at Pickering Bridge near Moy Pocket, people gather on what can be the coldest day of the year to compete for the coveted Numabulla Cup as well as a host of rockskipping awards. Highly decorative craft vie with sleek unadorned blackbean pods to be the first to the finishing line. Since the first Brownwater Classic in 1988, kids have grown up and come back with families of their own, while some past contestants are no longer with us. One year the event was deferred as the river was in flood; on another it was cancelled as the river had all but stopped flowing due to a drought. This year’s event, the 21st Classic, will be held on Saturday July 3 from 1pm at Pickering Bridge. Boat-building materials are provided, as are barbecues and fires for an evening meal. Everything else (including chairs, food and drinks) is byo. The Commodore and members of the Moy Pocket Yacht Club look forward to a lively field for this year’s event. Geographical Note: Pickering Bridge is about 2 km along Moy Pocket Road from where it leaves the Kenilworth– Eumundi Road near Gheerulla Hall. The Commodore can be contacted on 5446 0124 or imackay@bne.catholic.edu.au

OUR COMMUNITY Free Family Fun Noosa for The Noosa Long Weekend

T

he Noosa Pengari Steiner School is the host of the leading Children’s Festival on the Sunshine Coast.

The festival is held at the school (Nyell Rd Doonan - off Grey’s Rd) on the 20 of June and welcomes families from the Sunshine Coast and those who have travelled to see Noosa at its best for the Long Weekend celebrations. “The Steiner School hosts the festival as a celebration of kids, creativity, craft and cuisine. The event has thrilled and entertained adults and children alike with its own unique style of festival every year for over a decade now” Explains Mia Valentine, the festival coordinator. The children’s festival begins at 10am and is a day-long smorgasbord of children’s activities, live music, colourful characters, great natural eats and handmade gifts and craftworks which ends at 3pm. Without a second to spare your kids can dye a tee-shirt, or colour a candle! How about making a colourful felt ball, modeling a clay masterpiece, creating a silk painting, or fashioning a medieval style wooden sword and shield? It’s all here! The live music and entertainment is sure to get your toes tapping with performances from the lively Jambezi, an eight piece Marimba Band from the local area. Alan and Kristen Kelly from the Barleyshakes will also be performing along with Arron Bool’s Coastal Jazz and much more. For everyone to get up and have a go there is the interactive Sound Playground full of weird and wonderful Instruments to try. If that wasn’t enough there will be circus skills sessions, a crystal hunt, lucky dip, puppet show, archery sessions for older kids and a massage tent for deserving parents! The Children’s Festival is famous for its commitment to fresh, wholly organic meals and treats to tempt all palates. Vegetarian and other special diets are catered for.

jgMVV-DEC09

The Steiner School assigns the year 4 class each year the task of planning, organising and running the annual festival. Each year a subtle degree of healthy competition arises and the question is asked ‘How 0408 734 782 can we do better 0448 682 133 than last year?’ A/H 5446 0409

The funds raised from the event are fed directly back into the school. “This is the only Steiner High School stream on the Sunshine Coast and every bit of support from the greater community helps.” Explains parents of the school.

Parents, teachers and students are proud to showcase their unique campus, including significant infrastructure additions and the fantastic adventure playground that will certainly capture your children’s imagination. For more information 5471 0199 is the phone number to call during office hours. Claire would be thrilled to direct your call to a member of the festival organising committee. This is a jam-packed, cost-conscious day, reflecting the organiser’s love of children, its vision to be colourful, aesthetic, sustainable, joyous and relaxed. An inspirational and interactive experience for all who attended is certain. Most importantly it’s great fun! FREE ENTRY • FREE PARKING • FREE SHUTTLE BUS

The Importance of Decomposers

I

n this age of recycling and the incorporation of compost heaps into many households, some Year 9 Science students have discovered the importance of decomposers in nature. As part of their current unit of work, students have been learning about food webs and the vital role that decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play. A recent practical activity involved students culturing microorganisms on agar plates that had been exposed to grass clippings. Students received instruction about various safety issues involved with allowing bacterial and fungal colonies to grow on the agar. Over a number of days, students recorded the growth of these colonies in a data table. Class discussions centred on human bacterial and fungal infections, such as Golden Staph and athlete’s foot. Appropriate hygiene and prevention methods were highlighted as a way to limit the possibility of infection. This then lead to discussions about vaccinations and epidemics such as swine flu and bird flu. Photo: Cady Chappell inoculating agar plates.

Our entertainers, the tap dancing ladies, Ian the scottish soloist and the very talented piano accordian players made for a great morning. Although the exact figure is not yet known, we believe in excess of $2,000.00 was raised on the morning. We would like to thank the many businesses who, again this year, donated prizes for our raffle. Your support is very much appreciated. Also, our appreciation and thanks goes to Joyce Woods for the beautiful handmade quilt she donated for us to raffle. OUR COMMUNITY KENILWORTH PONY CLUB

F

ollowing our Gymkhana held on 16 May, our members have had some well deserved R & R. A few of our members did head out for the Zone 6 One Day Event held at the Caloundra Pony Club grounds. Zone 6 clubs worked towards building a new and challenging course for riders. Bret Lashmar competed on two horses, placing first on a HC horse and seventh overall on Rusty in his first outing. The other senior, Karen Conroy, also competed well. Romy McCullough rode well through the dressage and jumping stages however was eliminated in the cross country due to a few refusals. Jessie Falconer was the only other KPC rider and unfortunately had a bit of a slip and spill at one of the cross country fences and we’re currently awaiting results if she has any broken bones to mend over the next few months. Our muster was cancelled on 29 May due to the rain however members are eagerly preparing for the Zone 6 camp being held in the upcoming school holidays.

oosa Orchestra had its first concert on Sunday 30 May performing Beethoven, Mozart and the thrilling “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt, and it was a HUGE success! The lovely chapel at Good Shepherd Lutheran College provided the location with the audience enthralled and delighted at the exciting music and high standard of playing. Conductor Antoni Bonetti has skillfully managed the group within a short space of time to collaborate and produce wonderful music. Guest bassoon player Karen Hicks particularly delighted with the haunting sounds of the desert in the “Procession of The Sardar”, with guest compare Jo Hendrie spicing things up in costume dress for “Pirates of the Caribbean”! The next concert is planned for late October, so there is plenty of time to join the orchestra (several new members joined after the concert!). apleton Choir’s “A Tribute to the Celts” concerts on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 May were a huge success. The rain and storms on Friday night, did little to detract from the beautiful singing by the choir and its various artists. The bagpipe music by our guest piper, Mike McDonald from Tewantin had everyone’s toes tapping. The sunshine on Sunday afternoon helped everyone to enjoy this exhilarating musical experience. Celtic favourites such as Danny Boy, Wild Mountain Thyme and Irish Eyes Are Smiling brought tears to the eyes of many, while The Cloud, the performance of which, only the second in Australia, was truly beautiful. Comments such as ”This was the best concert the choir has performed in recent years.”, was common after both performances.

OUR P OLITICS WELLINGTON’S WAY

B

ill to ease neighbour disputes I encourage anyone who has experienced problems with neighbours over shared fences or overhanging trees to read and make comment on the draft Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Bill. A copy is available in my office for collection. Many people have spoken to me about the distress caused by disputes with neighbours over fences and problem trees. Changes recommended in the Bill include: providing clear direction and new rights for neighbours; clarification on ownership of a dividing fence on a common boundary; clearer rules for pastoral and agricultural fence; and a distinction between a retaining wall and a fence; a new statutory framework (Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal) to make orders in disputes. This draft Bill is open for public comment, so please have your say before July 9. The draft Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Bill is also available on www.justice.qld.gov.au. Road work update I am scheduled to meet with Main Roads’ regional manager to discuss district roadwork and priorities. This will give me the opportunity to discuss on-going roadworks on the Kenilworth-Eumundi Road, the urgent upgrade on the Obi Obi Road, Skyring Creek and others. Drivers need to be aware that there are delays on the Kenilworth-Eumundi Road at Belli Park and they need to drive accordingly. Motorists planning on visiting Kenilworth need to be aware that the Ob Obi Road is closed, and I suggest you use the Kenilworth-Eumundi Road as an alternative. I recently met with Main Roads staff and locals on site at the Obi Obi landslip, and while it is a few weeks since the initial damage, this area remains unstable and there are ongoing slips occurring. Instability is continuing on the cliff and we are waiting on geotechnical advise regarding the timing of repairs. First Home Owners Scheme aids Valley I support the Premier’s decision to expand the First Home Owners Scheme to assist regional Queensland. The newlyannounced $11,000 Regional First Home Owners Grant will provide a good incentive for young families who plan to build a new home to settle in the Mary Valley area. At the moment the towns of Imbil and Kandanga are included in the new scheme, and I have asked if the Premier will extend the grant to Kenilworth. While Kenilworth is still in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area (which is not eligible for this regional grant), it is still an isolated pocket of the district. Kenilworth was certainly one of the towns affected by the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam. Meet me in Cooroy I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, July 15, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933. MP Peter Wellington

PAUL TATTON’S COLUMN

I

ssac More Park and Charles St river parkland

As a result of strong community interest and following consultation with residents, I requested an assessment of the existing land at Charles St to improve the undeveloped natural environment that currently exists. I also requested an assessment of the existing parkland at Isaac More Park to improve what is generally a mown turf area with frequent vehicular invasions damaging the infrastructure and surfaces. A community meet and greet will be organised for July to involve the community and get their thoughts and feelings on how the upgrade should occur. Please watch future editions of the MVV to mark in your diary when the meeting will occur. Unitywater - coming very soon... If you haven’t already heard, Sunshine Coast Council will be out of the water and sewerage business by the end of the month and Unitywater will be the new water supply and sewerage services provider for the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions. This means that from 1 July, Unitywater will be the business to contact for all water and sewerage questions, payments and connections. And for ratepayers, a water account, separate to the council rates notice, will be sent to you from Unitywater towards the end of July. But despite the differences in the name, residents and businesses will continue to receive the same water supply and sewerage services that they have received from the council owned Sunshine Coast Water. if you want to know more now, visit www.unitywater.com or email ask.us@unitywater.com Capture nature and get snap happy Are you a Sunshine Coast nature lover? Then get snap-happy for council’s Backyard Biodiversity photo competition. Entry is free and you can be in with the chance to win great prizes. Visit council’s events calendar for entry forms and details. Are you travelling to Kenilworth? Once again, I’m urging any residents planning to head to Kenilworth via the Obi Obi Rd to take care. There has been a land slide near Cochranes Cutting and lookout, and the road is likely to be out of action for the coming months. The repairs to the road will shore up the area from further landslides; however it’s possible the road will be closed for up to six months. An alternative route from Kenilworth to Mapleton is via Coolabine Rd and Hunsley Rd, however I again urge caution as these are narrow gravel roads unused to large volumes of traffic. While repairs are the responsibility of the department of main roads, I will keep you informed of any updates as I hear them.
