“Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation”. Ecotourism Australia believes that the ultimate definition of ecotourism is compliance with the core criteria stated within the Eco Certification Program. KENILWORTH WHAT ABOUT OUR FUTURE?
O
ver 50 people attended the first Community Meeting sponsored by the Kenilworth and District Chamber of Commerce and Citizens Inc at the Bowling Club on Thursday 25 February. The group was very ably led by Libby O’Zinger who is one of the prime movers behind the revitalisation of the Nambour CBD and also has a wealth of experience in helping small communities with economic renewal projects. Participants at this meeting were asked to discuss what Kenilworth’s hidden secrets were. This resulted in a very interesting list. Participants were then asked to list five issues that would affect the future of Kenilworth. Everyone was asked to “vote” on these issues and the top three were chosen for further discussion within groups. Infrastructure and facilities, community lifestyle, and attracting more people to the district were highlighted. At the end of the meeting, those present decided that they needed to have a follow-up meeting in the near future to continue the process. This meeting will be held on Thursday 18 March 2010 at 7.00 pm at the Kenilworth Bowls Club. Even if you weren’t at the first meeting, please come and listen to what others have to say and add your suggestions. The more people involved, the more likely that the community will grow and prosper as it heads towards 2020. Michael Pfeiffer President – Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce
EVERY THIRD SATURDAY KENILWORTH’S COMMUNITY MARKET BRINGS A LITTLE COUNTRY TO TOWN
K
enilworth Community Market held its fourth country market day in the leafy CWA grounds in Elizabeth Street (next door to Kenilworth Garage if you’re new to the Mary Valley area) on Saturday 20 February.
Sharyn sells an extensive array of dog treats among other things, including scented oils. Mr Paul Neil’s bric-a-brac is certainly worth browsing through. I picked up a Red Cedar bowl for just 50c! Eric’s “One Offs” is a delightful display with his handmade garden mushrooms, which draw children and adults alike. All garden art found here is made from recylcled timbers naturally bonsai trees and local stone. Truly affordable artworks. Melissa sells delicious local Cambroon Gold honey and Black Horse sauces, including a tasty sweet chilli sauce made with honey and a truly old fashioned Worstershire sauce, also locally made. Pip and Brad sell beautiful silver jewellery and crystal windchimes. The kids always make a beeline for Pip’s face painting. Sites are available for as little as $10 and musicians are always welcome. Lesley Page displays a beautiful array of mosaic artistic designs. If you are seeking advice about floor and wall tiling and artistic expression in your home or office, Lesley would be happy to talk to you. She is the “Splashback Queen”! Thank you to those involved, be it visitors or stall holders, for joining the fun and in doing so sharing the vision ultimately to making a great contribution to our local community. Come on down every third Saturday of the month and join in on the fun. Market times are 7am to 1pm. For more information or to book a site of your own for as little as $10, please phone Elvira White on (07) 5446 0208. All the photos on this page from Birgit Kehr
It is always a great time for everyone, with a happy and relaxed atmosphere and much laughter to be heard throughout the course of the day. Although we are a small market at present, we are seeking more local stall holders to join us. Meanwhile, there is still a lovely variety of goods and treasures to be found. As the market opens at 7am, breakfast at the local Fire Brigade sausage sizzle can be had as stalls are perused. To name a few, Petra and Jasmine have a fantastic array of healthy seedlings, herbs, succulents, palms, other garden plants.

O
ur second pool party on 6 February was a fundraising success, the kids had a ball and the grown-ups had a pretty nice evening too! We will be holding another pool party on Saturday 13 March from 6pm to 9pm. Entry is $4 per person, $2 members and $1 for spectators. Everyone is welcome, although children under the age of 12 need to be accompanied by an adult. Our recent Eyeline backpack and goggles raffle was won by Mrs Beryl Laffey. A big thank you to all of the people who supported our raffle and pool parties and have generally continued to be involved in the pool. As a community pool we rely on the efforts of community members to keep running. We would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our volunteers, including our kiosk workers, instructors, committee members, as well as Birgit, Bruno and Kiri. Thank you also to the Friendly Grocer and the Bakery for their help, and to Kenilworth Butchery for another very generous donation of 50 sausages for our pool party sausage sizzle. This is the time to do something exciting with your life and take up the challenge and join us now call 0407 693 846 or come to Kenilworth SES any Tuesday night at 7.30pm in Margaret Street Kenilworth. I
wish to thank everyone who came along to the opening of Mal’s Room at the State Emergency Services Shed Margaret Street, Kenilworth on Saturday 13 February. Present were: Katrina Langston the immediate family and extended family • Cr Paul Tatton division 10 Councillor SCRC and wife Kellie • Member for Nicklin of Nambour on Sunshine Coast Minister Peter Wellington • Regional Director EMQ Mr Peter Twomey • Area Director EMQ Mrs Jenny Millers • Group Leader SES Kenilworth Mrs Brenda Parker • Fellow SES Members from Kenilworth and other SES groups • Fellow Emergency service providers • Friends and work mates of Malcolm’s and many invited guests.
“Today we are here to name the training room and say thank you to Mal for all the hard work he provided this groups of SES. Mal was Group Leader of Kenilworth SES for 10 years. He joined SES at Imbil group in November 1983. It was around this time in 2008 that Mal meet with me and said he was unable to continue as the Group Leader. He thought he was not doing justice to the position. l helped secure the building in which we meet today, it was a wide open corner training used to take place in and it was Mal who wanted a warmer area for the members in winter. The room was built from Council funding and finished off from the support of the Kenilworth SES support club.
Strong interest in council funding information session
R
epresentatives from a number of community groups from Kenilworth and surrounding areas attended council’s funding information session on Wednesday 24 February. Council staff presented information and answered questions about the Grants Program as well as the new Community Partnership Funding Program at the Kenilworth Arts Council building. Community groups looking for funding under council’s Grants Program or the new Community Partnership Funding Program can seek further help by booking in to an application clinic. These 30-minute application clinics provide potential applicants with the opportunity to bring along their draft applications for a one-on-one review with a council grants officer. They will be held at Caloundra, Nambour, Cotton Tree, Coolum, and Noosa, from 1 - 10 March. Applications for both programs close on 15 March 2010. For more information, visit council’s website (www,sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au under “For Residents”) or call 5475 7272. Maggie Cattanach Community Services Ph: 5441 8616 Email: margaret.cattanach@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
I suggested naming the building Mal. Mal had made a frame placed on the wall right where his plaque is mounted and within his frame he had all the SES members names, my name, any Council person who came to visit. All laminated and on A4 paper ready to change upon who might visit the building.

KENILWORTH KENILWORTH SHAVES AND COLOURS FOR A CURE
K
enilworth State Community College has chosen to support the Leukaemia Foundation World Greatest Shave for a Cure with a Crazy Hair Day on Friday 12 March. The Student Council considered fundraising options for a number of worthwhile organisations, including Hands Up for Haiti, but chose the Leukaemia Foundation to be the recipient of its fundraising. Raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation has taken on personal meaning for many residents of Kenilworth with local Cambroon teenager, Bridie Dunham, having been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in February 2008 when she was 10 years old. Bridie underwent intensive treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, including a life-saving bone marrow transplant. During Bridie’s treatment and bone marrow transplant, the Dunham family were provided with Leukaemia Foundation accommodation close to the hospital. Sue Brieschke, Principal of Kenilworth State Community College, said she was proud that the Student Council members had decided to raise funds for an organisation that had assisted a local family. Kenilworth State Community College will incorporate the Crazy Hair Day with a shave off or colouring of local identities at a community breakfast to be held at the school on Friday 12 March. Local hairdresser, Kelli Hoyes, has offered her expertise in shaving and colouring hair. Local businesses including Kenilworth Butchery and Kenilworth Bakery are donating to the community breakfast. We are hoping to make the World’s Greatest Shave Day a huge success and invite you to make a donation to help our fundraising efforts. Keep an eye out for our donation buckets around town or drop into the school to make a donation. You can also donate online at www. worldsgreatestshave.com and click Kenilworth State Community College.

Kenilworth State Community College Classroom music is underway!
O
ne of the most important aspects of classroom music this year is to create opportunities for the kids to experience “ensemble” playing, and singing! The marimbas are a great way for this to happen. Marimbas are like xylophones, only the keys are a little wider and the “range” a little lower to suit voices of primary school children.
At the college we have a bass marimba and four midrange marimbas. The P/1/2’s are using their instruments to add percussion to a song about a bush turkey who loses his claws, a Mary River cod who loses his fins and an echidna who loses his nose…because they’re doing too much scratching, swimming and sniffing. The 2-5’s are already starting to co-ordinate both hands in a song about making pancakes. In this class we’re also using the glockenspiels percussion and keyboard. The 5/6/7’s are working on the chord pa Hern of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, incorporating ukulele and guitars. We also have a ukulele club which has six players. Hopefully we can entertain an audience with all our Ensemble music! Jacinta Foale

KENILWORTH
O
ur riders have already been out and about representing our Club at various competitions so far this year:
• Nambour Equitation and Unofficial and Official Showjumping - New Member Emma Carlson rode Cajun Queen to place 3rd in AM5, 1st in AM6, 3rd in Power + Speed to be awarded overall D Grade Champion. Well done Emma! Jessie Falconer placed 9th on Lexington Inspire Me in the first round of Equitation and in showjumping placed 1st in AM6, 3rd Power and Speed on Sir Walter to place overall 2nd in the 13-26 years unofficial 60-80cm. Romy McCullough also rode at this event and represented KPC showing good sportsmanship throughout the day. • Zone 6 Equitation Clinic – KPC was represented by Jessie Falconer, Romy McCullough and Ella Skoupy. Riders had the opportunity to learn from instructors the finer points of equitation. The members have also been very busy with a working bee held on Sunday 28 February. The grounds were mowed and whipper-snippered into shape (in between down pours) and the canteen was cleaned and reorganised thanks to a band of very willing helpers. Preparations are well underway for a Hack Day on 17 April followed by an Oldies Day on 18 April… That’s right an Oldies Day (don’t worry it’s also for the not so old as well). This day riders are split into five self nominated groups, ie experienced, capable, novice, improvers (walk, trot) and beginners (walk/led) and is not restricted to PCAQ members and participate in some good natured fun in events such as barrel race, bounce pony, bending to name a few. So dust off your jeans, get out your riding boots, approved helmet and find a horse to ride… if that’s not your cup of tea you can always volunteer to help out or come along and cheer for people you know!

Eco Tourism in the heart of the Mary Valley
W
e were thrilled to learn in late January this year, that Mary Valley Vista finally achieved Advanced Ecotourism Certification for our accommodation situated just out of Kenilworth. It took several months to complete the application but it was well worth the effort. Mary Valley Vista is a 62 acre property with Obi Obi creek frontage and magical views. It has bush and pasture land, and an abundance of wildlife. The cabin sleeps four people, is powered by solar and gas, and guests can experience sustainable living first hand. There is a worm farm, composting, and home grown produce, as well as a unique insight into our native hollow dependent fauna with “nest box cam” where resident squirrel gliders can be viewed in a nest box. This is the first accommodation product to be certified by Ecotourism Australia on the Sunshine Coast, and we are so pleased it is the beautiful Mary Valley to lead the way. The natural environment in the Mary Valley is so inspirational, why not showcase it through eco tourism? We also try and promote local products and services in the community, therefore supporting the local economy and reducing the kilometres travelled to obtain it. “Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation” “We are the first Eco Certified accommodation since Jill Morris’ Book Farm in Maleny is an Eco Certified product and is not an accommodation. There are a few in Gold Coast hinterland who are fully certified accommodation.” For more information about Mary Valley Vista, visit the website www.maryvalleyvista.com.au or drop into the Kenilworth Information Centre and pick up a brochure. Our front cover story
KENILWORTH KENILWORTH ELECTRICITY “SWITCH-ON”
KENILWORTH IS ALIVE WITH EASTER FESTIVITIES!
S
o read the headlines in the Nambour Chronicle on Friday, September 14, 1951. Prior to this date power to live and work by had been generated in the township and district by the use of fuel driven motors, windmills, kerosene lamps, wood stoves and batteries. A different time and a different lifestyle when life was generally guided by the seasons and the weather. The newspaper article continued: Kenilworth Township celebrated the switching-on of electricity on Thursday evening last. The current comes from Nambour, through Mapleton, and is situated on the second feeder which the City Electric Light Co is building from Nambour to Gympie. This feeder, which is now well under construction, will eventually link up from Kenilworth to Gympie. When Kenilworth has been energised the company will extend its activities to the rural areas of Obi Obi, Gheerulla and Moy Pocket. This extension actually took another six years ! This period of our history was also when the majority of the roads were still dirt, Weaning Paddock Hill was much higher than it is now (the hill between Beacon Hill Rd and Paulger Rd), the Obi Obi Range was two way (on the current down road), Maleny Range was dirt road on the Conondale side. The Mary Valley Line still terminated at Brooloo. Brooloo had a school, a Post Office and Store, a Station Master and Railway Porter. Community Halls throughout the Valley were well used for dances, balls, sporting events and family celebrations. Bread, milk, groceries and mail were delivered to the door by local carriers, with the kraft trucks and the delivery van from McTaggarts store - all it took was a phone call. We still had small telephone exchanges – Gheerulla, Brooloo, Obi, Yabba as well as the many “hello girls” in Kenilworth exchange. Local residents could hitch a ride on the Courier Mail truck through to the railway at Landsborough to catch the train to Brisbane. Doyle’s Mill in Kenilworth, Adams Mill at Oakey Creek were still operating with many employees from the Oakey Creek Mill living in “Adamstown” in the cottages provided by Stan Adams along Moy Pocket Road. Kraft Foods cheese factory was still a relatively new industry in the town and provided employment for many of the local youth. The Forestry Camp at Yabba included numerous family “dwellings”, providing accommodation for many of those displaced in European countries by World War II. Certainly a different time and a different lifestyle – or maybe it is because I was nearly 60 years younger! Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth and District Historical Assn Inc.

his March local Cooroy workplace Spiritus will be participating in A Taste of Harmony, Australia’s biggest celebration of cultural diversity at work. A Taste of Harmony is a week of lunchtime feasting that begins on March 15 and ends with National Harmony Day on March 21, 2010. Community support service Spiritus will host several lunches for staff and clients throughout the week, consisting of a tasty variety of ethnic meals from all around the world. A Taste of Harmony encourages workplaces around Australia - big or small, and from every industry - to gather their colleagues together for a tasty multicultural lunch. Staff can bring dishes that reflect their cultural background, their favourite ethnic dish, or cook something from a country they have never tried before. Best of all, participating in A Taste of Harmony is easy, free and does not involve fundraising. Register your workplace at www.tasteofharmony.org.au then invite your workmates to cook up a storm for your event in March. Last year, more than 60,000 Australians shared deliciously diverse lunches while getting to know more about their colleagues’ cultural backgrounds. In its second year, A Taste of Harmony is an initiative of the Scanlon Foundation and is supported by the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Cultural diversity is a defining feature of our nation and has contributed greatly to Australia’s success, Scanlon Foundation chairman Peter Scanlon said.

THE Phil Monsour BAND on The Deck at Crystal water’s
P
hil Monsour, the Australian troubadour who sings songs of hope, humanity, invasion and occupations, that speak with honesty and insight about people’s lives and personal experiences. Phil has been treading the boardwalks of Brisbane for many years coming to fame with the very popular band Popproperly, who toured extensively through Europe back in the late 90’s.
Between 2001 and 2004 Phil branched out on his own with a solo career recording various albums and touring with the likes of Paul Kelly, Hunters and Collectors, the Church and Powderfinger. In 2008 the Phil Monsour Band was formed with Crystal Water’s Jonathon Lloyd on the drums. The band hit the road with the album “The Empire’s New Clothes”. This Album traces Phil’s interests in folk and world music but also rocks with “amp-rattling” foot tapping intensity which is sure to get you off your seats and dancing. Be sure not to miss Phil Monsour Band’s energetic and moving Sunshine Coast performance live on The Deck, Crystal Waters Community Co-operative, Saturday 20 March. From 6.30pm food and drinks will be on sale. Entry is $15 or $12 concession, kids 16 and under free. Stay the night and wake up to the sights and sounds of the bush with Bunkhouse and Camping accommodation available. Lend a hand for Landcare
B
arung Landcare is calling on the local community for volunteer support for the 2010 Maleny Wood Expo to be held at Maleny Showgrounds on 1 and 2 May. The Wood Expo is both Barung’s major educational event for the year and its major fundraiser. Any surplus from the event helps keep the office and nursery open and staffed for our members and for the wider community. Jonathon Waites is coordinating Expo volunteers again in 2010, so if you can spare a few hours - and hopefully stay to enjoy a coffee and browse - please call him 5494 3151. On the front line, volunteers man the parking, entry gates, raffle ticket sales, Landcare BBQ tent and Barung’s plant sales. Behind the scenes they keep the event running smoothly and ensure visitors go home with a lingering taste of Maleny’s ‘country’ hospitality. All volunteers receive free entry to the Expo, a drink voucher and free tree as a token of thanks.

OUR COMMUNITY More for youth TIMBEAO PLANET MUSIC N M oosa a l e at 2010 Wood Expo ARTS PRESENTS ny AND NOOSALSA 2010
N
ow in its 14th year, the Maleny Wood Expo on May 1 and 2 at the Maleny Showgrounds promises even more for the whole family than in previous years.
For youth fired by the awesome displays by Winter Olympic skateboarders, the Expo is offering skatedeck-making workshops, and skate-boarding competitions will be held throughout the weekend. Those without the ‘daredevil’ streak can join in stilt-walking workshops, fall over laughing at the antics of Great Scott’s street theatre and explore the magical power of communal rhythm and melody in merimba workshops with Fatima from Jambezi. There will be the chance to try out the 21st century, single person, short-haul, personal transporter - the Segway - not that this will be limited to under-age drivers! Apart from these great attractions, the Expo will bring the smells of our timber heritage into the present with chainsaws and mobile mills in full swing presenting current methods of preparing huge logs for end-users. Stan Ceglinski (pictured left) will awe the crowds with his time-proven skills of yesteryear - the same skills that were used by the first white settlers who came to the Blackall Range in the mid 1800’s to harvest the magnificent red cedars. Throughout the site, our renowned furniture makers will be showcasing their craft - from fine furniture in the Main Pavilion to more rustic alternatives in the SES Shed and outdoor sites - all made from sustainably harvested Australian timbers, weed and recycled timbers. Expo Coordinator, Steve McLeish says “The 2010 Wood Expo has more than ever for our youth – it is truly an affordable, entertaining and educational day out for the whole family. “The Wood Expo is one of the few events with ‘something for everyone’, whether you’re a collector of fine furniture or just out for a weekend drive with the family” Steve said. The 2010 Maleny Wood Expo is supported by Sunshine Coast Regional Council and many local businesses and organisations. For more information visit www.malenywoodexpo.com.au or contact Coordinator, Steve McLeish on 0428 674 335.

OUR COMMUNITY Council and the Mary Valley
O
n Wednesday 24 February a Councillor put forward a Motion with no prior notice to Gympie Council asking for the immediate support of Council to urge the State Government to continue funding many thousands of dollars into paying State Government staff as well as local external agencies such as the staff at Mary Valley Inc until the end of June 2011. This could cost well over $100,000! For staff! The Community Development officer’s contract alone for this financial year was $80,000! That officer has done valuable work over the last three years but is that still the best direction to follow? What about the residents and farmers in the Dam footprint? What about Kandanga township? Why not discuss if this is still the highest priority to channel the recovery funds? The Council is consulting and listening to the Mary Valley Renewal group which includes most groups and residents represented in the Mary Valley but they had not yet asked for this Motion! Why not? Because they are trying to sort out the issues of greatest importance to the Mary Valley residents and the consultation takes time. They are not paid staff – they’re volunteers, they work, bring up families, run farms and businesses. Give them time. Let’s get it right. Mr Garret and Peter Beattie suffered the result of rushing into decisions. Many believe they should have stopped to research and consider their proposals. They wasted a huge amount of money. I think they rushed in. The Councillor’s Motion without Notice carries the risk of doing the same thing – wasting more taxpayers’ money. There is little to show, as Glenda Pickersgill has said, of the $14 Mill spent on grants, studies, workshops etc in the Mary Valley since the announcement of the Dam! We can’t afford to be a party to rush in asking for more tax payer dollars without some time to research and consult widely. We pay for this through more and more taxes! Put aside prejudices, politics and anger. Speak up. Show up. Put your community first. But do it now. Cr Graham Engeman, Gympie Regional Council To the Editor,
W
ith the recent deaths regarding the foil insulation, the circuits in question were protected by circuit breakers but not safety switches. Circuit breakers will activate with large faults from equipment or a fault in the cable in question, but are unlikely to activate from someone receiving a shock as they require very high fault currents to activate. This is where safety switches come in.
It is the safety switches role to activate if there is a slight imbalance between the active, neutral and earth in the cable in which it is supplying. It has a high sensitivity and will react within 0.4 of a second and limit the current to under 30 milli-amp. Safety switches are now mandatory on all house power circuits in existing houses and all power and light circuits in new houses built. I have assured the Minister that, if he accepts the invitation, he will not be ambushed by the media or disgruntled landowners, and that the visit is simply an opportunity to inspect and receive a submission by the PAGE action group.
The $6.65 million upgrade will include; reconstruction to 10m width, re-aligning the road to improve visibility, and upgrading the intersection at Fleetwood Road and Cherry Lane to allow safer turning movements. This work is due for completion later this year.

he Dispute Resolution Centre, as part of the Department of Justice and Attorney General, has been established to assist people in the community to resolve their disputes or disagreements. Trained mediators are available to sit down with parties in dispute and guide discussions so that an agreement can be worked out. Staff and mediators do not take sides and their aim is to assist all parties to resolve any differences in a fair and acceptable way. Mediation can be used for a wide range of disputes from conflict between neighbours (issues such as fencing, pets, noise or trees), disputes in the workplace between colleagues or management and staff, commercial or business disputes or family conflicts. Mediation is a great way to try to resolve conflict as it allows you to talk about the issue openly and with confidentiality, assists with helping you make a decision and saves time and money. In almost all cases, mediation is free of charge. Experience shows that there is about a 90% chance of resolving issues through this process. Staff from the Dispute Resolution Centre will even make all the arrangements for meeting times and place suitable to everyone. For further information, call 1800 017288 (free call). Queensland Transport has stopped collecting organ donor information for drivers licences. If you wish to be an organ
donor, you need to register with the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR). This is the only national register for organ and tissue donation for transplantation. To register you can contact AODR on 1800 777203 or visit their website at www.hic.gov.au. Brochures will be sent out with a reminder that a persons drivers licence expires shortly. If you receive a Traffic Infringement Notice for a traffic offence and don’t pay the fine within the prescribed period, the matter will be referred to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER). They will write to you at the address on your licence and advise you of the manner to pay the fine. If the fine is still not paid, your drivers licence will be suspended until the fine is paid or arrangements are made to pay the fine. It is an offence to drive a motor vehicle whilst under SPER drivers licence suspension. If you are caught doing so, you will be disqualified from holding a drivers licence as well as fined. It is not a defence that you did not know that your drivers licence was suspended. SPER will have sent a Notice to your address on your drivers licence and the Courts have held that is sufficient for service. It is therefore necessary to make sure that your current address is the one that is on your drivers licence. Your address can be changed at the Police Station if it is not correct. Construction is expected to finish in late 2010, weather permitting. The department would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience and asks them to travel safely during this work. OUR COMMUNITY Heart of Gold International Film Festival
A
n international film festival set in the gold rush heartland of the Sunshine Coast, screens for the 4th year from March 11-14 2010. The Heart of Gold International Film Festival is the first film festival in Australia to exclusively screen entertaining, thought provoking, and positively skewed films. Regarded as one of Australia’s preeminent film events, the Heart of Gold International Film Festival 2010 will present a total of 171 films. 166 shorts and five feature length films will screen showcasing the work of filmmakers from 22 countries. In order to take Heart of Gold to its next stage, the Festival Board recently recruited Malcolm Blaylock as Artistic Director. Blaylock has directed, produced and curated St Kilda Film Festival. He has also served as a jury member for Interfilm Berlin and Spain’s Short Film Festival Bilbao. Known for his role in expanding and developing the Darwin Festival, Blaylock believes that the Heart of Gold International Film Festival appeals to the new breed of film makers due to its unique positive point of view. “There are so many good films, from all over the world. As I travelled the various film festivals this year I was looking for films that were entertaining and that fitted our unique brief. Regardless of genre, each film had to have somewhere within its premise - no matter how deeply or darkly placed - a positive spin on the world and a positive view of humanity”, says Blaylock. The 2010 program features quality films across all genres: comedy, drama, animation documentaries and student films have been selected for their excellence in film making. Amongst the 171 films is Australian actor Bud Tingwell’s last film titled “The Last Bottle”. Frank Woodley (of Lano and Woodley comedy duo fame) brings more humour to the program through his short animation “Chicken of God”. Kat Stewart [Underbelly] appears in a strong supporting role in a beautiful film titled Trampoline and David Wenham delivers a classic performance in a movie titled “Glenn Owen Dodds” [GOD] which carries the tagline -“Want to know the meaning of life? You’ve got five minutes.” The film recently premiered at the most prestigious short film festival in the world: ClermontFerrand, and won the International Prix Canal+ Prize - a career breakthrough for the three young Queensland film makers responsible for its creation. This award winning film will have its Australian premier at the Heart of Gold International Film Festival.

Closer to the heartland are some outstanding local film productions. “The Gympie Pyramid Story” is a documentary about an ancient pyramid said to be found in Gympie. “Eugene the Storyteller” is more an insight into the world of bush medicine as told by an Indigenous elder from Gympie. “Somewhere Near Tapachula” is a touching documentary about a mission in Mexico run by Gympie locals that provides a refuge for disadvantaged children and therapy through surfing. The film sublimely shows how easily these kids take to the surf and the joy they reap from it. The international program features too many gems to mention here. Among them are: Grisen - The Pig [Denmark], The Butterfly Circus [USA], Just a Pitch [France], John and Karen [UK] all of which further contribute to a great line up of films which Blaylock says are some fine examples of truly great short films from around the world. The festival presents a fantastic family program which includes the stunning animation titled Lost and Found [UK]. Narrated by British actor Jim Broadbent, this gorgeous feature film is about a little boy and his unsolicited mission to get a lost penguin back home to Antarctica. Also part of the family program is Luc Jacquet’s first film since March of the Penguins entitled The Fox and The Child: a beautifully shot feature film about a life changing encounter between a fox and a young girl set amongst breathtaking scenery. Heart of Gold International Film Festival offers special events, documentaries, workshops, seminar programs and the very popular Filmmaker Presents sessions along with its extensive short film program from around the world that will collectively inspire you, make you laugh and warm your heart. Gympie Civic Centre www.heartofgold.com.au “Somewhere Near Tapachula” Documentary about Sunshine coast locals ‘surf therapy’ work with Mexican orphans – Closing Night feature. An inspiring story of love, life and hope looking at the horrific childhoods of 45 Mexican kids, and their exciting future of following their dreams... “Glenn Owen Dodds” (GOD) Who is Glenn Owen Dodds? Conman? Charlatan? Or creator and ruler of the universe? Could Michael Radcliffe really be meeting his maker? Either way, everybody gets five minutes. What you take away is up to you. For Michael Radcliffe, it may just be the meaning of life.
