ll that for one painting. You may recall that in the last edition of the MVV I mentioned a painting which sold for $119,922,500. Well, a colourful painting of two Tahitian women by Paul Gauguin (1892 oil painting “Nafea Faa Ipoipo” (When Will You Marry?) has been sold to a group of state museums in Qatar for nearly $300,000,000. Unbelievable!

lease be aware that there is a group of men operating in the area scamming people into driveways that are substandard and exceedingly expensive. They use bully stand over tactics to pressure people into paying significantly more than the originally asked price. We have had numerous similar complaints over the last month that involve these persons arriving at a place unsolicited, offering a cheap driveway, in one case $1000, and then after doing a very substandard job, demanding as much as $6000.

They use rental cars and fake identification. They are not licenced to carry out the work and as such the Office of Fair Trading is trying to catch and prosecute them. They normally reside in caravan parks and they avoid contact with police.

If you are approached by this group, please report the matter to the Office of Fair Trading via the internet and contact police on 131 444. It is highly recommended you refuse any work from this group but if you have and are being threatened or if they are refusing to leave the property until you pay them more than what was agreed, call 000.

On another matter, there have been two serious crashes in the Kenilworth area in the last two weeks and both of them had excessive speed as the main contributing factor. It is very frustrating that a minority of drivers don’t seem to recognise the risk they place themselves and other road users in by failing to comply with speed limits and driving to the conditions of the road. Both crashes were preventable.

I sincerely thank the Kenilworth First Responder volunteers for attending these crashes at times when they should have been enjoying sleep. They are an awesome group who dedicate a large portion of their free time to making themselves available to assist us in an emergency. Make sure to give them a big thank you when you next see them.

Also, thank you to the Kenilworth QFRS who also attended these crashes. They too make themselves available to be called out at all hours to potentially confronting scenes especially with road trauma.

Any volunteers? Doctors believe they will be able to perform a head transplant within two years. An Italian surgeon says he thinks he can carry out the procedure to give people a new, healthy body. It could help patients with spinal cord injuries, muscle-wasting diseases, or people whose bodies are riddled with cancer. The surgeon says techniques are out there, they just need to be put together. The procedure would involve two patients – someone who is brain dead, and one of the before mentioned patients.

A worthy award. A British Paratrooper has been given the highest military decoration awarded for valour – the Victoria Cross. The Lance Corporal showed ‘complete disregard’ for his own safety as his group came under attack from around 20 insurgents armed with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. First he ran to the top of a barren hill and, with the ‘snap and crack’ of enemy fire all around him, realising that two friendly machine gun teams had been surrounded. Despite being the most junior member of the group he took control of the situation, giving first aid to a wounded US Marine Corps captain and beginning casualty evacuation. During the battle, 11 insurgents were killed and four wounded.

Wild, cold weather. Cornwall was recently lashed with bigger waves than surf hotspots such as Hawaii as storms and snow battered the UK. Waves of up to 25 feet (7.62 metres) were recorded at Sennen. There were also snow accumulations up to 10cm on lower parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Otherwise, things are going great for the town from a policing perspective. There have been no reported break and enters since the four businesses were broken into late November. In relation to those breaks, police are still unable to determine who was responsible and are seeking assistance from the public. Similar committees were set up in most communities throughout Australia, even small ones like Kenilworth, Mapleton and Montville. http://www.starfieldobservatory.com/Nambour/War.htm In the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, 4 September, 1914, page 3, Kenilworth News an item headed Patriotic Fund was published:Patriotism is in the air just now and this locality is catching the infection very severely. Councillor Sharry has called a public meeting for Monday evening September 7th, the object being to raise subscriptions toward the Patriotic Fund. It is to be hoped that there will be a good attendance for so laudable an object and that this district will keep up its reputation for straight-out giving. Mr. P. Sutton has also offered a young pig to be raffled at the hall, the proceeds to be also devoted to the same worthy object.

Patriotic Fund raising continued in the community. In a subsequent article (18.9.1914, page 5) it was reported:- The local contributions to the patriotic fund have increased considerably during the past week and the secretary advises that several cheques ranging from £2 to £5 have been paid. State-wide promotion of the fund continued with the following article appearing in The Queenslander newspaper (12.12.1914, page 11):- The total amount subscribed to the “Courier” Patriotic Funds to last night was £37,720/18/4 made up as follows:- Shipment of Foodstuffs, £26,684/3/6; Volunteer Patriotic £5313/11/3, Belgians, £3080/10/2; Milk for Babies of Britain £1874/4/2; Aeroplane £31/6/- (If you check the additions – they don’t add up! – the reporter must have been poor at maths.)

The first Golden Casket lottery was conceived by the Queensland Patriotic Fund to raise funds for World War 1 veterans, and was first drawn on 14 June 1917. First prize was a casket of gold worth 5,000 Pounds (the equivalent of 30 years’ salary), since cash prizes were not permitted by law.

Some of the funds raised locally were used to purchase wool for the knitting groups. A letter published on page four of the Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser 28.9.1917 is an example of the appreciation by the recipients of their output:- Pte W. Sharry wrote to Miss Hassall acknowledging receipt of the socks and cap. He thanked those who helped to make them.

raining for the calendar year 2015 has recommenced for Kenilworth First Responders with Gavin Bennet our Paramedic instructor. Gavin is a Critical Care Instructor with the Queensland Ambulance Service. The fortnightly training plan includes the reaccreditation of our skills required to respond to a variety of emergency care situations.

This manikin which was kindly donated by the Maleny Local Ambulance Committee is considered to be one of the best training resources available. It allows the instructor to create lifelike responses from the manikin that include variable pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory sounds, etc.

Week 5 saw our first behaviour/learning incentive for the year with nine students being selected to walk up town and enjoy an ice cream from Kenilworth Country Foods. Three students from each classroom were selected that met the following criteria: overall achievement in all areas, amazing behaviour and most improved. Another incentive day will be held at the end of the term that will involve all students who have consistently displayed our four school rules: Be Respectful, Be Safe, Be a Learner and Be Responsible.

T

here are some changes in three of our local churches. The Uniting Church has welcomed a new pastor, Rev’d Catherine Solomon while Fr Graham Gatehouse joins St John Bosco and Fr Harry Reuss comes to St Luke’s.

There is also a change of service times for St Luke’s Anglican Church in Kenilworth. Fr Harry Reuss will celebrate Holy Eucharist on the third Sunday of the month at 11am. Services on other Sundays will continue to be held at 9am. The 11am service will be followed by an informal lunch in “The Shed”.

The next Women’s Breakfast will be on Saturday 2 May at 8am at St George’s Anglican Church Hall, Walker Street, Maleny.

After more than thirty years under the pastoral care of the Caloundra Catholic Parish, the community of St John Bosco in Kenilworth has transferred to the Parish of Nambour.

The new parish priest is Fr Graham Gatehouse who will celebrate Mass on Sunday 15 March at 11am. From now on the monthly mass will be celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 11am.

Liturgy of the Word with communion will continue to be celebrated on the other Sundays at 9am. The ecumenical service will also continue to be celebrated on the fifth Sundays of the year.

A group for Christian Meditation meets each Thursday at 9.30am in St John Bosco Church. This is an ecumenical group which is affiliated with the worldwide movement for Christian meditation called WCCM. The WCCM website provides several resources including personal daily reflections. Let us make our local memorials very special for the 2015 Anzac Day commemorations. So please get working and see if we can create a record for Kenilworth and all the memorials in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and especially in the Mary Valley.

A Sunshine Coast lady recently appealed through the Sunshine Coast press and radio for such poppies to take with her for laying at Gallipoli on ANZAC Day, but that deadline is the end of March. So there will still be time for poppies to be donated to local RSL’s.

t our first riding muster of the year on Saturday, February 14, our new members were taken through their inductions to help them become familiar with the way that Kenilworth Pony Club operates.

We were watching the sky very closely and although the ground was a bit wet, we modified the areas used and lesson plans to suit the conditions. Riders split into certificate groups for flatwork with instructors Selina Manning, Melissa Flood and Sonia Law. A sausage sizzle, put on by our club, was enjoyed for lunch.

Our first general meeting was held, covering the State’s revised expectation of regular hand washing and a review of our club’s business plan. We also had a theory lesson and explored our aspirations for the future, adding a few more things to the list!

In the afternoon, riders chose to do some sporting with Selina Manning. They practiced bending by seeing who could go the slowest, riding without use of reins: some were more successful than others.

We finished the day by teaching Lana and Alice how to “running vault”! It was a great day!

5000 POPPIES PROJECT

ocal RSL’s, and in particular the Kenilworth RSL is anxious for participation in a local version of this project. They are especially hoping for local people to make poppies for our own Anzac Day memorials in 2015.

Riders were not so fortunate the following weekend (21-22/2/15) where the Nambour Jumping Equitation and Showjumping Weekend was postponed due to the predicted weather event (Cyclone Marcia).

Our next muster is Saturday 14 March, followed by a two day camp in April.

The finished poppies can be taken to the local library or given directly to any RSL member.

Let’s see if we can make our own war memorials the length and breadth of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland as colourful as Federation Square in Melbourne will be on ANZAC Day (see information in the February edition of the Mary Valley Voice).

The Kenilworth Library was collecting poppies for this project, but after the closing date for that, any poppies collected are being saved for our 2015 Kenilworth Poppy Project.

As we saw on television coverage of Remembrance Day, school children were placing a single poppy to represent those who died in the First World War. Kenilworth RSL is hoping to replicate this event at the Kenilworth 2015 Anzac Day ceremony with a poppy to be placed for each person on the Honour Board at the Kenilworth Memorial Hall.

Knitting and crochet patterns are available at the Kenilworth Library, and also on the website - http://5000poppies.wordpress. com/poppy-patterns/ There are lots of patterns and Youtube tutorials on this website. Poppies can be made from material, felt, paper etc, so even if you can’t knit or crochet, you can still make poppies. They are very easy to make and each one takes less than half an hour.

THE KENILWORTH PAINTING PRIZE COMPETITION REFINED!

fter some years experience with this competition, the Kenilworth Arts Council Committee has decided to make some changes, essentially so that it is easier and more rewarding for the artists who enter. The purse currently remains at $17,500 for this acquisitive prize but there are organisational changes designed to satisfy feedback from artists and others: 1. There is now no absolute size limitation for the painting, except that work over three square meters requires consultation about delivery and hanging issues.

Another positive development, which will increase the exposure of this competition, is that Kenilworth Arts Council Inc. will be collaborating with the Sunshine Coast Council in the development of the “Sunshine Coast Festival of Arts and Culture”. This innovation is intended to organise and publicise local arts events in order to provide a coherent experience for visitors and residents.

KEITH GALL WOODCARVING WORKSHOPS

A

s a fundraising event, the friends of Amamoor hired local 3D wood sculptor and Australian Chainsaw Carving Champion, Keith Gall to run 2 two day chainsaw carving workshops. With support from the local councils RADF Regional arts development fund programme they were able to run the chainsaw carving workshops as well as make timely improvements and maintainance at the Amamoor Train Station.

Amamoor has an exciting anticipation of the return of the MV Rattler and wants to show off the best the town has to offer.

2. Artists can now enter more than one work.

Student are also playing a part in the production of decoration of practical new infrastructure works.

3. All work will be hung (space permitting), catalogued and available for sale.

The main parts to the course were how to transfer your ideas onto the wood and then cut away everything unwanted.

4. The period between entries being accepted and the delivery date for hanging has been considerably extended.

The weekend was a great experience and general feedback so far has been that more workshops will be planned.

5. There will henceforth be a dedicated exhibition of work, for Painting Prize entries only, on Easter Saturday each year, beginning at Easter 2016.

The venue worked out really well and it was good to be utilising public space.

These changes are designed to give artists plenty of time to create their work, the maximum exposure for their work, and the best chance of achieving sales.

There was a nicely varied style of sculptures created on the second day of the class, each student applying unique characteristics to their art pieces.

TAEKWONDO IS BACK IN KENILWORTH

fter a break of many years the San Taekwondo club is again running classes in Kenilworth.

Instructor Norm Taylor said “It’s almost like stepping back in time to run the classes again in the Kenilworth hall. Some of the current students are younger brothers and sisters of students I taught here 10 years ago. It’s exciting to be able to show the next group of future champions the skills of this ancient martial art.”

“San Taekwondo actually started as ‘Kenilworth Taekwondo’ more than 10 years ago. We changed our name when we opened clubs away from Kenilworth. The name ‘San’ means ‘Mountain’ in Korean language, so we have kept our association with the Hinterland” said Norm. The club has moved on to open a full time training centre at Beerwah and the class at Maleny is still going strong.

Our club currently boasts two national champions, one silver medalist and one bronze medalist from the National championships in Adelaide last December. We also have access to a great range of opportunities through our membership with Taekwondo Queensland and Sports Taekwondo Australia.

Training with the World’s best Students from San Taekwondo in Beerwah and Maleny last month had the opportunity to train with the world renowned demonstration team the K-Tigers. The K-tigers are based in Korea and have performed at events including the world championships and even starred in music videos. Currently touring Australia to promote Korean culture and martial arts, they spent three days training with us in the Hinterland.

They performed a spectacular show for members which mixed elements of dance, tricking and gymnastics with traditional martial arts. Kicking targets while performing flips several meters off the ground and hitting up to six targets in one jump were some of the highlights.

Following the demonstrations students had the opportunity to learn from the K-tigers who ran a lesson for the students helping with their patterns or poomsae and teaching some self-defence techniques and martial arts tricking skills.

Our new fulltime training centre in Beerwah has proven to be a great asset as we are now able to host international teams and provide the very best environment for training. A very exciting year lies ahead, including competitions in New Zealand, Thailand and Korea.

MARY VALLEY 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Both from farming families, Geoff and Lyle met at Swan Hill quite by chance. Geoff was only staying overnight on his holidays and had decided to go to the local Ag. Ball. Geoff says he noticed Lyle in a pink ball gown as she entered the hall and asked her to dance.

Two years later on the 5th of February, 1955, they were married in Kerang at St Johns Church of England. It was a rainbow wedding with the bridesmaids wearing lemon, pale green and mauve dresses. The rest is history....

Lyle and Geoff lived for five years on the Wellington family’s originally selected land, by then a wheat and sheep farm.

Later Geoff selected land at Doorodong (near Penola S.A), where they ran Devon Cattle. It was really cold there so they sold up and moved to Qld where they have lived for more than 50 years. Geoff at almost eighty-five years of ages still farms his Droughtmaster cattle and cuts his own fence posts etc. He received Runner-up: Primary Producer Qld Landcare Award in 1995.

At the time, the burgeoning photographer had more or less stormed the Sydney hotel where the Rolling Stones were staying in 1966. But when lead singer Mick Jagger saw the resulting portraits of the band, all was forgiven.

The original photos helped establish the new publication Go Set, the first Australian pop music newspaper. For Colin Beard, an engineer who didn’t pick up a camera until he was 25, it was a new chapter in his own story.

He went from visually recording the rock and roll era to fashion photography and then teaching the art itself. Get him talking

Colin said writing and photography were simply two different media requiring the same attention to techniques – structure, composition, metaphor and beautiful adjectives.

He tells the yarn of a serious Chinese philosopher vetting his works for an exhibition: “He gave little comment each time I showed him a photograph, but the interpreter concluded the assessment by saying that the man thought I demonstrated the four virtues of true art” “Please ask him what the virtues are exactly,” Colin asked. He was told good craftsmanship, good aesthetics, good message, and good spirit. That’s the message he brings to his students. “You need a sense of narrative.” He said photography is not highly technical, but if you don’t have those skills you get frustrated in bringing your story to life.

The workshop “My Imbil: A Photographic Narrative” will help participants gain satisfaction in taking photographs by learning the basics of using their cameras to achieve what they want.

Colin sees every image as a narrative and those “visual adjectives” have as much appeal to him now as when he started in the industry. “I was a very good writer, too, I love to describe things, it’s about capturing the magic of something – not just what you see. And I want to show people how much more you can tell in a photograph. It’s quite natural for me, oh and I can still write, by the way!”

lmost a month has passed since the recent election and I would like to thank the people of Nicklin for your support and assure you that my door is always open and I will continue to represent you to the best of my ability.

For the second time in my political life I was to hold the balance of power, first in 1998 and now in 2015. I met with the new LNP Leader Lawrence Springborg who I have known for many years and respect and I told him that before the election I made it very clear that I would not support a Newman, Seeney, Bleijie, Nicholls team. Consequently I gave my support to Labor Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk to form Government.

That support is conditional in that there is no gross fraud or illegal activities and that I retain the right to vote on every Bill in the way I believe is right for my electorate and Queensland.

I am looking forward to taking my seat in Parliament and am confident that this new Government will provide the stability and good governance that was lacking in the last.

With your support I was able to increase my majority to 65% and am looking forward to the next three years in Parliament.

ROGO’S ROUND-UP

looding in the Valley You’re probably aware that Kenilworth was cut off by flooding during the recent heavy rain delivered by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Marcia. I came into Nambour on Saturday morning to the Local Disaster Coordination Centre to see first hand how things were going and checked that Energex were on board to avoid a repeat of the prolonged power outages experienced in 2013.

It was great to see collaboration between Energex, other agencies, Council and the local community group disaster management coordinators – everyone did a fantastic job and our region was lucky to escape any significant damage from this severe weather.

The new Moy Pocket Bridge survived the most extreme flooding since it was built in 2013, however the road leading up to it sustained some damage and Council was straight on to these repairs. This bridge floods much less frequently than the lower, old bridge and recent rainfall was one of those ‘once in a blue moon’ events that will see it go under.

A designer dunny for Kenilworth The ‘Designer Dunny’ working group, which is made up of passionate Kenilworth community members, recently met with Council officers to discuss the amenities block for Isaac Moore Park that will double as an outstanding sculptural art piece.

Council’s Infrastructure Service Director assured me and the group that his department is 100% behind this project and I look forward to seeing it progress. We’re considering how to invite submissions for this structural masterpiece but one thing is very clear – it will be a piece that aims to catch the eye of visitors from far and wide!

Kenilworth War Memorial Sunshine Coast Council will start work on the Kenilworth War Memorial in the first week of March, with construction scheduled for completion well before Anzac Day. This memorial will be near the Peter Dobson carpark on the Maleny-Kenilworth Road, and includes three new flagpoles, a memorial wall, memorial plaques and service emblems and surrounding landscaping. I

am funding this project 100% through my discretionary fund and it has been delivered by Council, after much frustration from the community and me following unsuccessful applications to the State government. This memorial is so important to honour our fallen soldiers, and also to demonstrate to the people of Kenilworth that they are an integral part of Division 10 and the wider Sunshine Coast community.

ollowing the huge success of the GR Council Pest Animal workshops in 2014, three more workshops are planned for later in 2015. The dates for these workshops have not been finalised, although, around July/ August appears to be an ideal time.

Many of the local gravel roads in the Mary Valley have now been graded, so remember, if you want to keep these roads in a dual carriageway condition, please continue to drive far to the left of the roads so that the weeds and grass don’t have a chance to grow on the road surface and the roads stay in a good condition.

Matt Golinski’s contract as the Gympie Region Food and Culinary Tourism Ambassador has been extended. As a major step in facilitating increased consumer and industry awareness of the Gympie regions food and culinary tourism and tourism industry hub, the focus of Mr. Golinski’s contract in 2015 will be enhancing and building on the messages of his regular radio interviews and social media platforms, attending targeted food events and festivals and increasing the profile and awareness of the diversity of the Gympie region and its produce.

The Mary Valley Show Society held their AGM on Tuesday 24 February and welcomed the new committee in for the next 12 months. It is with heartfelt regret that we note the passing of Mr Stan Evans. Stan will be greatly missed by the members of the committee and we offer his wife Lee our sympathy in this time of grief.

here are two inventions I would love to patent. The first, a readable screen on children’s foreheads to inform parents what is going on. The second, an energy gauge to be prominently positioned on mothers. Either of these, I am confident, would make me millions and I would commission the construction of a beautiful pontoon, environmentally friendly of course, into the Obi Creek to relax at.

The “energy gauge” is a passionate favourite, because in my book, not many mothers check their own frequently enough. Our roles in caring for others often supersedes our own innate wisdom to put a bit back into our own tanks.

A recent visit to my wonderful natural therapies practitioner highlighted what I am talking about. I had booked in for an acupuncture treatment. For those uninformed, acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. “Traditional Chinese acupuncture is a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force - known as qi or chi (CHEE) - believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.”

(The Mayo Clinic). Happily chatting away, to my acupuncturist I mentioned “it had been a while since I had visited”. On investigation of client record card, apparently it had been six months ago. All inserted acupuncture needles nearly flew out of my body.

“Six months”, I muttered. Surely not. However, it was indeed the case. On departing, I reassured myself that this was too long between visits. I made a pact there and then to book in for more regular tune ups.

Energy re-filling does not have to be expensive. Ensuring you are not burning the candle at both ends and obtaining enough rest and relaxation are paramount to sustaining your physical and mental wellbeing. My own tank-refilling is achieved by catchups with family, wonderful girlfriends, dates with my husband, fun activities with the family, visiting my alternative health practitioners, walking and some days, just tuning out to it all and heading down the Obi Creek for some quiet time.

Be consistent, be conscious. Regularly assess your “energy gauge”. Like cars, breakdowns can and do happen without maintenance. Please remember to fill your mother energy tank to the brim. The dividends will pay off on your energy levels.

REPORT ON DESTINATION GYMPIE’S FEBRUARY

T

he Tourism Volunteers of Destination Gympie Region undertake around eight familiarisation trips each year visiting tourism operators within the Gympie Region and neighbouring regions. These trips enable our volunteers to gain valuable product knowledge on what the region has to offer, so they in turn can provide informative and accurate information to visitors. On Thursday 23 February our team headed into the Mary Valley including Kenilworth.

First port of call was Imbil Country Cabins. Donna and her sister Karen have a long association with the Mary Valley and in particular Imbil Country Cabins (formerly Imbil Cosy Cabins) which was owned by their Aunt and Uncle. Having nostalgic childhood memories of holidays past, the sisters purchased the cabins and completed rebranded, and refurbished each selfcontained unit. The décor in each cabin is very tasteful with verandas’ overlooking the Yabba Creek and Imbil Weir. You can swim either in the Yabba Creek or in the pool located within the grounds, canoeing is also an option. Being pet friendly is also an added advantage.

We then travelled into the Kenilworth Township to visit Lenore at the Kenilworth Museum. Lenore provided us with a wonderful insight into the history of the region from its early origins in 1850 to the present day. Lenore is obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about the township and surrounding area. Her rendition of the links between Kenilworth and Gympie and the significance of the impact that the Mary River had on the two communities and still does to this day was interesting, especially in light of the recent flooding experienced as a result of Cyclone Marcia.

One could not help but glean from her, was the incredibly strong community ties and the effort that went into establishing and building Kenilworth’s infrastructure by the local inhabitants and the land that was donated by prominent landholders.

This included the first school built by the Community, also the Gheerulla Hall (formerly Farmer’s Assembly Hall), and St Matthews Church.

A visit to Kenilworth would not be without a stop at Kenilworth Country Foods to sample the wonderful array of local cheeses and yoghurt. The range of produce on sale (jams, relishes, chutneys, spices) etc. both from local producers and throughout Australia was amazing.

Lunch was at the Kenilworth Bakery where Sue and her team ensured we were well fed and watered. They had a wonderful

Next stop was the Kenilworth Homestead a privately run outdoor recreation family camping and function centre right on the banks of the beautiful Mary River and only 2km from the township of Kenilworth. Claire gave us a guided tour of the property and its facilities.

On the homeward leg we dropped into Rosevale House on Mary Valley Road to visit Jackie and her husband who have recently arrived from South Australia. This 1903’s homestead was relocated from Moorooka in Brisbane to the Mary Valley and the ornate plaster ceilings and stained glass windows are typical of the artistic nature of that period. Located in a peaceful bush setting, Rosevale House offers B&B and self-catering studio apartment accommodation.
