ain rain go away!! Unfortunately our first muster of the year was under water. The Mounted Police spent an eventful night at the Homestead only to find that KPC members were unable to get to the muster the following morning. They are hoping for a return visit later in the year – will keep you posted. Romy McCullough competed at Nambour Equitation and Show Jumping on 28 and 29 February, placing 1st overall, well done. On the 3 and 4 March Caloundra Hack Day was held. Jessie Falconer placed in every class with the highlights being Champion Best presented and Supreme Show Hunter, winning an awesome rug and ribbon, how exciting! Our next muster is scheduled for Saturday 31 March, fingers crossed that there will be no more rain! A dog may be man’s best friend, but the horse wrote history. ~Author Unknown

The sign at St Matthew’s Anglican Church at Gheerulla has been spruced up and now looks as beautiful as ever, thanks to the skilled painters! The Riverside Church is considering running a bus from Kenilworth to Maleny for young people to attend the combined churches youth group meetings. A Youth Camp is being planned. Watch this space! ell, hello! Here’s the latest on the Kenilworth church scene.
The World Day of Prayer at St John Bosco’s Church on Friday 2 March was well attended by Kenilworth folk from all the Christian faiths. All enjoyed a shared lunch afterwards in St Luke’s Shed. This year’s service was prepared by the WDP Committee in Malaysia. Peter Hennessy, who frequently visits Malaysia, gave a very interesting presentation on the country. He gave lots of facts and figures and interesting insights into everyday life. However, he did point out difficulties
We would like the community to get behind Kenilworth R.S.L. and give us the support we need to retain a presence in this town. You do not need to have been a member of the armed services to attend meetings. Next meeting is before ANZAC Day on Monday 9 April at 7pm at the RSL room at Kenilworth Hall. This year’s ANZAC Day falls Wednesday 25 April (details in MVV 18 April 2012). Following that our next meeting is bi-monthly on Monday 11 June (Queens Birthday public holiday). All welcome and any enquiries Sonja 5446 0448 or Jim 5446 0637.

C
hristmas 1923 the Sims sisters Winnie, Lily and Dorrie were given pocket diaries. Was this type of recording of daily activities the forerunner of Facebook and Twitter? From Winnie’s diary of 1924 is a record of the impact of the only flood that occurred in 1924 on their family and other members of the Kenilworth community.
time. The International got as far as the creek and Humphrey and Mr Bridges walked to here. Note: Humphrey Hassall was the driver of the Hassall’s carrying service (the International) between Kenilworth and Eumundi. The Bureau of Meteorology records show February 5, 1924 flood at a 3.25m height. The bridge over Gheerulla Creek in 1924 was at the back of what is now Pioneer Park and much lower than the current bridge – which takes a 4.5m flood before it is inundated. Tuesday 5 The men spent the morning at the creek clearing the road etc. At 11 o’clock Bert (Sims) drove Mr Bridges and Humphrey as far as the (Mary) river. They borrowed a horse and crossed and went home. Humphrey came back this afternoon but he couldn’t get the lorry through the creek. Humphrey stayed the night. Humphrey lived at Mt Ubi and Mr Bridges lived in Walli. Bert Sims was a youthful 17 year old in 1924 I wonder if he had a driving licence? Wednesday 6 Humphrey got up early and brought the lorry while it was still rather high. He went up the road and back again. Arthur came tonight. Business is still good. Arthur Tanner opened his General Store in Kenilworth (now the Bakery) on January 2, 1924. Thursday 7 Arthur went to work. Dick (Sims) came for some potatoes in the Reo. Today seemed very quiet. I finished the edging on the afternoon-tea cloth yesterday. We had no one save ourselves tonight and it seemed quite strange. It is storming tonight.
February 1924 Monday 4 We didn’t wash. The girder cutters, Harry Keylar and Mick Groves, cut down the iron bark in the pigsty. It was thundering at about eight o’clock. It rained a heavy shower before dinner but in the afternoon it just poured for about an hour and a half. When Ed (Sims) came home from school he couldn’t walk along the road this side of the creek. The children’s horses nearly had to swim the creek. The waterfall was the biggest I’ve ever seen it. The gully overflowed its banks in no
Friday 8 I swapped mum jobs and made all the cake - buns, Victoria sandwich, cocoa sponge and coffee cake. Mr Friedmann and Geo Potts came in “Foxy” while Lil (Sims) was scrubbing the dining room. They came back tonight. This evening the gum tree by the corner was struck by lightning. The insurance plate was knocked out. The cows were just up. We all got the dickens of a fright. It didn’t rain much from that storm but is storming again now. Another crash just came and Dorrie cried. Note: It is assumed that Mr Friedmann and Geo Potts were two of the guests at the boarding house run by the Sims family. Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth and District Historical Assn Inc.

EASON OPENER The recent floods have wreaked havoc with many grounds particularly our neighbours at Pomona/Cooran Cutters Club. To executive, members and players at the Cutters, our thoughts are with you as you rebuild. No doubt many were eagerly awaiting the start of the 2012 season. The Mary Valley Stags first game will be held on Saturday 24 March at Kenilworth Showgrounds. This will be a double header with the Mary Valley Stags in a grand final rematch against Yandina Raiders. The earlier match will be between Pomona/Cooran and Palmwoods. No doubt all the boys put on a terrific display of football for their supporters. Why not bring the family out to Kenilworth Showgrounds to see our game. A canteen and bar will be operating with all proceeds supporting the Stags Club. Rare and exotic growers
hoenix Farm produces the delicious pineapple, mango and tropical frozen fruit crushes available from Dagun Station and selected specialty stores along with the popular “Dagun Delight” a blend of mango, macadamia nuts and ice cream. The makers behind these refreshing cups are Ironbark and Yvonne O’Neill, regular growers for the Dagun Grower’s Market. Barky’s real passion is growing “different” fruit or rare and exotic varieties. He is a member of two rare fruit groups and often produces heirloom variety pumpkins, cucumbers and super sweet melons.
Black Sapote
Their farm is 30 acres of red soil which is frost free and overlooks the Mary Valley between Dagun and Amamoor. With a north easterly aspect the farm avoids the worst of the summer sun and benefits from the northerly winter sun. This allows them to grow a massive variety of interesting native and exotic tropical trees. Their main crop of custard apples is African Pride but they also have 16 other varieties. It doesn’t stop there. Avocadoes, over eight varieties, seven varieties of fig, 10 of guava, 11 of Kou Bou, six mangoes and the list goes on.
Jaboticaba
Dagun Growers Market has enjoyed the fruit of his labour with bursting red finger limes, and amazing Judean black muscatels (which he also has another six other varieties of). Then there’s the staple, sweet Emericon onions.

Medicine from our Gardens
An addition of tomato paste to any of these dishes will further increase the lycopene content.
his is a great time for tomatoes, both in the garden and at markets and in the shops. Those of us who grow them have to give them away by the bagful, and hopefully the other half are the recipients of these bags! Most of us however don’t eat nearly enough of these “apples of paradise”, but probably would if we really knew what an important part of natural medicine they are. Tomatoes are incredibly high in the powerful antioxidant lycopene, which the American Cancer Society reports may be a significant player in the prevention and reduction of many types of cancer – prostate, lung and stomach being the main ones. Lycopene is also a potent anti-inflammatory agent, and as a result has been found to help lower heart disease, as well as LDL (bad) cholesterol. Studies have also shown that it can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which is an increasing problem in an ageing population. Finally, (but certainly not the last thing which lycopene can be held responsible for!) research is being done into the UV protective qualities of lycopene, which results in lowered skin damage from the sun and therefore a reduction in the signs of ageing.
Below is one of my favourite quick recipes for using cooked tomatoes: Cherry Tomato and basil pasta sauce 2 Tblsp olive oil • 1 red onion • 3 cloves of garlic • cherry tomatoes (or chopped tomatoes if you don’t have cherries) • 1 Tblsp tomato paste • a handful of fresh basil 1. Chop the onion into a fine dice and gently fry in olive oil until soft. 2. Turn up the heat, add the chopped garlic and fry quickly until the garlic is fragrant. 3. Throw in the tomatoes, fry for 1 or 2 minutes until they are just breaking down. 4. Add the tomato paste and possibly a little bit of water if you like the sauce slightly runny 5. Finally add the chopped basil, and cook briefly as you stir it through. 6. Serve with fresh parmesan and your favourite pasta (preferably wholemeal). Gabby Scott Naturopath and Chef in Belli Park
working bee reminder
Right, so all of us reading this are immediately thinking “got to get more tomatoes in my salads,” but the catch is that lycopene is more potent and more easily absorbed when the tomatoes are cooked, especially when combined with a small amount of fat or oil, such as olive oil. So while we should all continue to eat as many fresh tomatoes as we fancy, my word of advice is start cooking with them too! Whether it’s Sunshine House of Wellness chutney, home made tomato Naturopathy { Herbal Medicine sauce, tomatoes [ Massage put in curries or Recently opened in Belli Park stews, soup, the Opening special - 1hr Massage $50 possibilities are Call Gabby Scott on 0421 134 451 Member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society endless.

Cr Julie Walker – April NewsLetter 2012
o doubt you would have noticed some road works in our area of late and wondered what was happening. These works are repairs to damaged or saturated pavements from the January 2011 rainfall events. The work has largely been funded by the State and Federal Governments through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) and Council is also contributing significant funds. The Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services has recently approved the new activation of the NDRRA for our area for the most recent events. I would like to thank our band of eight Imbil Rural Watch volunteers who helped me out on Clean up Australia Day on Sunday 4 March. We cleaned up several sites around the Mary Valley and disposed of an alarming amount of rubbish. Please be aware of how you and your family dispose of rubbish and help us to “Keep Our Mary Valley Clean”!

Check out Gympie Regional Council website for what you CAN and CAN’T put in your recycle bins, the recyclable materials collected in our shire is on the increase each year. What a wonderful achievement for everybody and I congratulate each and everyone of you for your fantastic efforts. Calling all Community ‘Not for Profit’ Groups, have you got your contact details on councils “My Community Directory” yet? If not, go onto our website and enter your groups details so that we can keep you up to date on funding opportunities, workshops etc. Remember, if you need emergency supplies in times of disasters, these supplies will cost you money and will NOT be supplied Free of Charge, so please make sure your cupboards are stocked. Cats Claw is continuing to be a nuisance weed that is taking over some large areas in our shire, for more info go to www.dpi.qld.gov.au/4790_7225.htm The number of ‘reclaimed’ cats from council pound is growing which is contributable to people having their cats registered and microchiped. This is a positive step, but we still don’t like to see stray cats being picked up as they should be contained on their owners property. Primary producers, small business operators and not for profit organisations who have been impacted by the flood event are advised to contact QRAA on 1800 623 946 for information and assistance. Mens Shed, Mary Valley are now making native bee hives for Valley Bees, we need to protect these small creatures as they are an integral part of our eco system. You can find more info on Valley Bees at the MRCCC web site. Please feel free to contact me should you have any concerns as I am readily available and if not I WILL return your call as soon as possible after I receive your message.

OUR COMMUNITY Spot the pothole, contact council
T
he heavy rain may have left the Sunshine Coast, but potholes are now appearing on roads around the region.
Sunshine Coast Council is committed to repairing the damage and Civil Works Services Manager John Netherton said locals could also help by letting us know where problems are located. “Council is encouraging residents who spot pot holes to report them to us by calling customer service on (07) 5475 7272 or jumping on council’s website and filling in a quick and easy online form,” he said. “Council is responsible for approximately 3500km of roads around the Sunshine Coast so the more sets of eyes we have spotting problems and reporting them to us, the faster we can get out and fix them. “As a result of the first rain event in February, over 90 sites have already been identified as having storm and or flood damage across the coast. “This includes damage at bridges and culverts where the water overtopped the road, large scours and some landslips. “Along with this, potholes will continue to pop up over the weeks to come.” When completing the online form, residents are urged to provide as much information as possible to assist council in identifying the location and urgency of the work required. Council will prioritise any items reported and work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to repair potholes on local and State Government controlled roads.
Flood-hit businesses to get State support
S
unshine Coast Council has welcomed the news the State Government has offered financial assistance to small businesses in Pomona, Cooroy and surrounding towns affected by the rain and flooding on Friday, 24 February, 2012. State Ministers Neil Roberts and Tim Mulherin have announced that affected businesses and not-for-profit organisations could be eligible for low-interest loans. Mayor Bob Abbot, who toured the flood-affected areas with Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts early March, said the Minister’s fast response brought about this timely announcement. “Mr Roberts was on his mobile phone right here, making arrangements as soon as he had witnessed the destruction,” Cr Abbot said. “The first thing he did was activate the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements which renders flood victims eligible for aid. “Council has had members of our Economic Development team on-site since Sunday 26 February assisting affected businesses where we can and the announcement opens up another opportunity to help those businesses reeling from the impacts of Friday night.” Economic Development portfolio councillor, Lew Brennan, said the community was working well to get back on its feet, but additional support was always welcome. “Our Economic Development team worked with staff from the Sunshine Coast office of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation to inform the case that has triggered the approvals from Ministers Roberts and Mulherin,” he said. “It goes to show what a great working partnership can achieve.”

id you know that every month Sunshine Coast Council provides free food handler training to operators and staff of food businesses licensed by council?
Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council wants to make understanding food standards a simple process for local businesses. “These sessions provide a great opportunity to educate new business operators about food handling,” Cr McKay said. “The training is also ideal for existing business to refresh skills or train new staff. “The training aims to ensure that residents will enjoy fresh, healthy, high quality prepared food and beverages.” Cr McKay said the free food handler sessions are held every month in various locations across the region including Tewantin, Nambour, Maroochydore, Kawana and Maleny. “The training session run for approximately three hours and participants are issued with a certificate of attendance,” she said. “To register your interest for food handler training sessions in rural areas, please contact the Environmental Health Officer via council’s customer service centre.

Discover how your food choices affect the world
unshine Coast Council invites residents to reawaken their food senses throughout April and May by attending a Slow Food session at local libraries across the Coast. Julie Shelton from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland chapter of Slow Food will share the principles on how to consume tasty and satisfying food that is affordable for consumers and fair for producers. Slow Food is an international non-profit organisation founded to counteract fast food and fast life which has attributed to the loss of local food traditions. Library and Gallery Services Manager Ross Duncan said council was pleased to present the opportunity for residents to educate themselves on food quality and socially conscious production methods. “By booking into a Slow Food session residents will learn to rediscover their interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world,” he said. “Connecting Sunshine Coast consumers to their local producers means easy access to quality, fresh food and in turn supports the Coast economy.” To book, phone your local Sunshine Coast Library or visit www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Next Slow Food session in your area is at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Thursday 17 May from 10 to 11.30am. For booking ring 5435 3100.
“We will be happy to organise sessions for areas where enough interest is generated.” Please note that council is not a registered training organisation (RTO) and the course is not an accredited or approved course. Accredited courses are offered by local training providers – look under Training in the Yellow Pages or contact TAFE. Bookings are essential. Attendees must hold a food licence issued by Sunshine Coast Council. Next event scheduled for March through May 2012 in the area is Tuesday 22 May 2012 from 5.30pm - 8.30pm at Maleny Library, 5 Coral Street, Maleny. For booking ring 5475 7272.

Library and Gallery Services Manager, Ross Duncan said with more people choosing to downsize their living accommodation, worm farms are an excellent way to recycle food and garden waste. “This is a great opportunity to share alternative methods of green composting with the community,” he said. “These popular sessions are sure to book out fast, so get in quick to ensure you don’t miss out.” Cooroora Woodworkers Cottage, Lower Mill Site, Lower Mill Road, Cooroy on Saturday 12 May from 9.30am to 11.30am.
