enilworth State Community College student, Owen Blinco (pictured below) has shone at the Small Schools Swimming Carnival in February and has since gone on to qualify for the Regional Trials at Caboolture. Owen swam brilliantly at the Small Schools Swimming Carnival to win become Age Champion in his age group and help the school win the Aggregate Trophy. Owen swam super times in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. He then competed in the bigger competition at the District Swimming Trials where he once again made a huge splash and recorded qualifying times to proceed to the Regional Trials. All of our students have enjoyed the swimming component of this Term’s HPE program. Our Active After School Communities program also offers two swimming activities this term. On Thursday afternoon our junior swimmers take to the pool for fun activities to improve their water safety and swimming skills and on Friday afternoons there are squeals of delight as older students enjoy underwater hockey.

The club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in any way - to the businesses who gave the food for Thai ladies to cook; people who donated the goods for the raffle and auction; a large number of people who gave cash donations and to all of our volunteers that helped organise the event and helped on the day. Also, thanks to our Karaoke people for providing the entertainment. We were very happy that Matthew and Stacy came over for the weekend and were pleased to meet them. They are a shy couple who were thrown into the limelight for a very tragic reason. They did try and attend the club on Saturday night but when they saw the crowd of people they just couldn’t face coming in.

successful fundraiser

ur fundraiser held on Saturday 19 February at Kenilworth Bowls Club was an overwhelming success and has by far exceeded our expectations. We managed to raise just over $18,000 for our adopted family - Matthew and Stacy Keep from Grantham - not bad considering we only organised this in three weeks. The money came from cash donations, barefoot bowls, a huge multi-draw raffle, an auction and the sale of Thai food.

A few of our ladies in the club, including myself, wanted to do something for the flood appeal but didn’t want to put it in the “pool”, so we came up with the idea of ‘adopting’ a family that we could help directly. Matthew and Stacy’s name was given to us and so we went to work. Everyone that we approached was very happy to contribute because they knew who was going to get our funds. Kenilworth is only a small community and it is amazing what we can achieve when someone needs help. For this event we did go further afield than just Kenilworth. Through our bowling contacts we have donations from Kilkivan, Gympie and Cooloola Coast. We also received

ear Readers we are still looking for new local members, either current Defence Force Personnel or retired Ex-Service Personnel to join our membership especially with Anzac Day coming up. Give our public relations officer, Dale Ainsworth, a call on 5472 3032. Our January meeting was cancelled because of the excessive rainfall blocking off several roads, stopping most members driving into town. Even on our February meeting, only six members turned up. Anzac Day is also on Easter Monday this year, with our usual routine, breakfast in the park, 7-8am, fall in and march at 8.15am or 8.30am. Then the normal routine of Anzac Day is performed with the readings, flowers placed on the memorial, flag half masted, last post played, a minute silence, reveille and the raising the flag. Then the final talk from the president of the R.S.L. or the local priest. A wet weather routine is yet to be worked out but I guess it will be held in the R.S.L. room, with coffee, tea and soft drinks on completion. Dale Ainsworth, Public Relations Officer

Kenilworth-Tewantin Connection

n 1922 Mr and Mrs Joe Adams moved to Tewantin and established three business ventures: the lease of a fish works, the Elanda Guest House and the Donella Café. This was the first time that the family had owned a motor vehicle which was necessary to transport the fish to the market. The family consisted of two sons and five daughters: Mervyn; Aubrey, Doris (later to become Mrs Mulvena); Vera (Mrs Norm Loweke); Beryl (Mrs Taylor); Ena (Mrs Doug Sutton); Muriel (Mrs Alf Pearce). Both Mervyn and Aubrey remembered climbing a tree in their backyard, (now 21 Werin Street), while at Tewantin School, to watch Charles Kingsford-Smith fly overhead. Mr J.W. Adams, served as Councillor of Division No.3 in Noosa Shire from Wednesday 12 April 1927 until Wednesday 9 April 1930 (from the Noosa Shire Council monthly meeting Attendance Books held by the Cooroora Historical Society Inc). To continue the family tradition of service to the community Joe’s brother Stan Adams went on to become Chairman of Noosa Shire from 1958-1964.

During the Adams family time at Tewantin the Donella Bridge was constructed and opened. The construction of this bridge was first noted in The Chronicle on July 23, 1926 when an engineer’s estimate of the cost of construction at £5000 was tabled at the Noosa Shire Council meeting. A public consultation meeting, attended by 45 residents of the area, was held on September 28 of the same year. After much heated debated a motion was put by Mr. H. Parkyn (seconded Mr. T. Williams) that the council go on with the building of the bridge. The Brisbane Courier reported in the Cooroy News on page 17 of the April 29 edition, 1929 that Mr. F. C. Kolb, contractor for the pile driving of the big bridge over Lake Donella at Tewantin, which is part of the scheme to provide a road to Noosa commenced work on April 15. The Cooroora Historical Society advises that in the publication Country and Coast by Denise Edwards (2001) held in Noosa Museum’s Library it is noted that the bridge was opened in October 1929 by the Home Secretary, The Hon. J. C. Peterson on the Noosa Beach Estate. Ena often told her family she failed to attend the opening because she was so busy in the kitchen of the Donella Café making cups of tea for the visitors. The family moved back to Lower Kenilworth in 1930, Joe Adams working with his brother Stan in the sawmill at Oakey Creek and Ena working as the book keeper in the mill office, prior to her marriage to Doug Sutton in 1934. The connection between this district and the TewantinNoosa area has been long standing with a number of family holiday homes built in what is now Noosaville in the first decades of the 20th century.

A special thank you to our outgoing Secretary Tanya Hibbard, who needs to be congratulated for doing such a wonderful job in 2010. Thank you needs to be said to all of the KPC members who took on other roles in the club during 2010, and those who have taken them up in 2011, without these people KPC would not be the successful little club that it is today. We would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Kenilworth community for all of their support throughout 2010, including buying and eating (we hope) our cakes, participating in raffles, and watching and supporting our Gymkhana. Romy McCullough placed 7th overall, for the 11 and 12 year age group in Equitation and placed 1st overall in the unofficial 12 years and under age group for Show Jumping. Jessie Falconer competed in the 13 and 14 year age group placing 7th overall in Equitation and placed 13th in D Grade for Show Jumping. Rachel Law competed in the Show Jumping 26 years and under and placed 3rd overall. Equitation and Show Jumping Championships being held in Nambour during the Easter Holidays. Congratulations Ella and Jessie!! The Caloundra Twilight Hack Day was held on 12 February. Caitlyn Boon and Jessie Falconer represented KPC and placed in many events. Caitlyn’s highlight being the Sash and Trophy for most Promising Horse and Rider Combination. Jessie’s highlight was placing 2nd for both Open Show Hunter and most suitable Pony Club Hack. Through the off season our instructors have been busy updating their skills with attendance at local refresher schools and coaching clinics. We are also pleased one of our junior members, Rachel Law, will also be training to become an NCAS Prelim Coach in 2011. We look forward to the new ideas learnt at these sessions being introduced to our musters and two day camps throughout the year. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HENDRA VIRUS

here have been seven confirmed human infections with Hendra virus, four of which have been fatal. Horse owners and horse handlers need to be fully aware of the facts about Hendra virus so we can minimise the risk of horse and human infection. The natural host for Hendra virus is the flying fox. It is still not clear how horses become infected, but it may occur when food or water is contaminated by bat urine or birthing products. Therefore making sure food and water are not placed under a tree visited by flying foxes is a good precaution. Horse feed should always be kept in sealed containers to keep it clean and free from waste products prior to use, a measure also recommended for rodent reduction. With more Hendra virus cases has come more information on how the disease affects the horses body. Unfortunately Hendra virus can cause a range of clinical signs in horses. This is because the virus affects cells which line blood vessels, causing a systemic vasculitis. Therefore horses affected by Hendra virus show variable and often vague signs. The only consistent signs are a high body temperature, an acute onset of illness, and rapid deterioration. Other signs shown by affected horses depend on which organ system suffers the most damage from the vasculitis. They may show signs of colic, respiratory disease (such as difficulty breathing) or neurological signs. Hendra virus positive horses will shed Hendra virus two days prior to showing signs. Humans become infected when they are exposed to tissues and secretions from infected horses. This means that any mucous or other discharge from

an infected horse’s nose, eyes, mouth and anus contains Hendra virus. Given that horses excrete Hendra virus two days prior to showing any clinical signs nitrile gloves should be worn when taking a horse’s temperature, examining your horses mouth or cleaning your horses eyes etc. Any wounds on your skin should be covered before handling your horse to prevent easy access of Hendra virus into your body. You need to be aware that your horse may be infected with Hendra virus and not yet showing signs at any time, so wearing gloves when handling any secretion from your horse and bandaging any wounds is a basic precaution. Hendra virus is quite fragile and does not survive well in the environment. Simple cleaning procedures, such as washing your hands and body with soap, will eliminate Hendra virus. This does not mean that it is safe just to wash your hands after handling your horse. A combination of bandaging any wounds, wearing nitrile gloves and washing with soap after handling any horse secretions are simple and effective ways of preventing human deaths from Hendra virus infection. nacks On The Deck on Friday 18 February was a great success. There was a wonderful mix of businesses and community organisations. Over 50 people attended including Peter Wellington MP. Everyone chatted and many ideas were exchanged. Mary Ann Law, the Secretary of the Chamber, did a brilliant job organising the evening. A big thank you should also go to Steve Conway from the Kenilworth Hotel for providing such delicious snacks as well as the venue. Well done everyone. At our last chamber meeting, Cr Paul Tatton reported that the toilets in the town park are on the drawing board for revamping. And yes the repair of the Town Clock is also in hand. It may even be solar powered. The footpath at the north end of town will be extended and the street scape in Elizabeth Street is being redesigned. There will be a community consultation once the proposed plans are drawn up. The Sunshine Coast Council is committed to development of the Kenilworth Parks - Isaac Moore and the Charles Street. The council have not yet released final plans. Progress will be in small stages due to lack of available funds. The Kenilworth town signs at both entrances to town are also being upgraded. Lots to look forward to!

Graham Miller is the new President of Mary Valley Inc. So he is the person to contact for more information about this organisation. We have discovered that Kenilworth does have a disaster plan and there should be a public information meeting sometime in the future.

big hello from all the gang at Pomona and District Meals on Wheels in the verdant Sunshine Coast hinterland where we cook and send out nutritious and tasty meals from Kin Kin in the north to Eumundi in the south. We run the kitchen three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), providing mains, soup, dessert and pure juice in our meal package for the bargain price of $7 and it gets delivered to the door. If anyone is interested in accessing our service, if it is just for one meal a week or one per day, please give us a call; we cater for diabetics and those who are gluten intolerant, as well as taking into account likes and dislikes. We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals, especially in the Cooroy/Eumundi area. If anyone has a couple of spare hours, even once a month, please give us a call - it’s a wonderful feeling to contribute to a good cause and you get to meet some warm and wonderful people. It would be a great help if volunteers could pick up meals from our kitchen in Pomona, take them to other deliverers at the Cooroy Railway Station, then continue with their own run. We are also looking for dessert cooks to prepare sweets once a week. Cooking starts at 7am and finishes by 11am; everyone gathers around the table for a mid-morning tea where we have a chat and sample some the freshlymade goodies. There’s a light-hearted atmosphere in our kitchen with plenty of time for a joke and the occasional song. Deirdre has organised a great sweets menu that changes with the season – good recipes are provided. If anyone reading this article requires meals or has the time and inclination to volunteer for any of the above jobs please give us a call on 5485 1777, 5485 2209 or 5485 0527; you can also drop into our kitchen at the back of the Pomona Memorial Hall on one of our cooking days (see above). Conondale Rodeo Dance and Celebrations

n Saturday 9 April, at the Conondale Hall will be a night to celebrate. Firstly, the Easter Rodeo is back on in Conondale in 2011, but this year it will be on Easter Saturday, (not Sunday) and it will be held at Green Park. The Bush Racing Club are hoping the new format and venue will make for a bigger and better event after the last three years being dissapointed by cancellations due to wet weather. To kickstart the celebrations Conondale is hosting the rodeo dance and social evening on Saturday 9 April, commencing at 7 pm. A new band is coming along this year, known around the ridges as “Sneaky Pete” and they are very popular with all ages. The crowning of the 2011 Rodeo Princesses will also take place on the night, and supper will be provided along with a liscensed bar. The Rodeo Princesses are a great way to get involved with the rodeo celebrations, so if anyone is interested, no matter how old or young, consider giving it a go. OUR COMMUNITY New Facilities at Good Shepherd Lutheran College

011 is proving to be a momentous year for the community of Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Noosaville. Not only is it the 25th Anniversary of the educational facility, the commencement of the 2011 academic year has seen the official opening and dedication of the College’s two newest additions, the ‘state of the art’ Library and Early Learning Centre, ‘Little Lambs’. Although students, their families and staff have been able to enjoy these new facilities for several months now, the official proceedings were conducted on Friday 4 February. A commemorative Chapel service was conducted by Pastor Mark Nitschke with Senator for Queensland, Senator John Hogg, past Principals, Lutheran Education Queensland (LEQ) and Queensland Lutheran Early Childhood Services (QLECS) officials, along with students, College families and staff present. Guests then enjoyed tours of the campus and afternoon tea in the Library. The $3.3 million projects were design by Burling Brown and Partners and constructed by Northbuild Pty Ltd. Good Shepherd Lutheran College would like to thank the Australian Government for their funding contribution under the ‘Primary Schools for the 21st Century’ program, the GSLC Parents and Friends Association for their provision of shelving and equipment in the Library and the College families who supported the projects by purchasing fundraising pavers.

Good Shepherd Lutheran College Pincipal, Mr Anthony Dyer commented, “This year we celebrate 25 years of providing quality Christian education to families of Noosa and surrounding districts. These excellent facilities add to our capacity to continue this tradition. From its beginning Good Shepherd Lutheran College was and remains a school from the community for the community. New Bushcare Group for Little Yabba Park

new Bushcare Group will be formed to look after Little Yabba Park at Cambroon in the Mary Valley. This community group is keen to revegetate the stream banks where Little Yabba Creek meets the Mary River. It also aims to remove Madeira Vine and other invasive weeds in the park. Both these activities will be supported by Sunshine Coast Regional Council. The idea of a Bushcare group grew out of an exciting new Barung Landcare project called Hinterland Bush Links. The Barung project aims to reconnect the large blocks of bush across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Restoration at Little Yabba Park will contribute to a wildlife corridor between the Blackall and Conondale Ranges. This will greatly increase the survival chances of a range of threatened animals in the region such as the Plumed Frogmouth and the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. It will also ensure that seed of rainforest plants can be dispersed by fruit-eating birds that use these corridors. Organiser Athol Craig launched the project, calling together people who are concerned with the need to conserve all bees (domestic and native) for the health of our environment and on-going food supply. Also attending was Chris Fuller, from Kin Kin Native bees, who showcased numerous native bee boxes and nesting setups to encourage both solitary and social native bees, like the blue-banded bee, resin, carpenter, green metallic and leaf-cutter bees. He also shared information and advice on the better known social native bee, the small black trigonia stingless bee. Pauline Alexander and Kayle Finlay talked on commercial honey bees. Discussion also evolved around impacts in the Gympie region of the introduced small hive beetle (Aethina tumida), which is creating major problems for not only the bee industries, but consequently, for pollination and food security in the Valley.

An expected 25-plus crowd of bee enthusiasts (and wannabees) quickly turned into an 80-plus crowd, putting smiles on the faces of the organisers. A surprising turn-out for a hot, sticky Sunday afternoon. But well worth it!

From the meeting, a ten member steering committee has been formed, to formulate the best working model for the group. They will present at the next meeting, held at the Kandanga Hall again (it should be cooler this time!) on Sunday 13 March, 1-30pm for a 2pm start. A lot will be discussed at this meeting around pollination in the Valley, as well as answers to any of your questions on native and honey bees. There will be a wealth of experience in the room!

owerlink follow-up During the last sittings in Parliament I met with the Minister for Energy Stephen Robertson and again questioned him about the on-going uncertainty surrounding the proposed Woolooga-West Cooroy powerline project. The Minister advised me that he anticipates a decision by the middle of this year, and his advice to date is consistent with the powerline needing to be constructed by around 2014. I have asked the Minister to have his department fund an independent investigation of the PAGE committee’s proposed alternate corridor because it appears the Minister is not receiving accurate information in relation to this matter. I have also repeated my request to the Federal Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Mr Tony Burke to authorise someone from his department to inspect Powerlink’s proposed powerline corridor as well as the local action group’s (PAGE) alternate corridor. I contacted his office in November last year and have yet to receive a response to this initial request. Obi Obi Road landslip repair work

The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to provide an update on repairs to the landslips on Obi Obi Road. The department is carrying out repairs on the lower sections of the major slip near Cochrane’s Cutting, around 5km from the Eumundi-Kenilworth Road intersection. One lane is expected to be reopened around the site by late March 2011, weather permitting. Repairs will continue after this, with the second lane reopened to traffic in the coming months.

OUR COMMUNITY Heritage Tour gains insight into the history of the hinterland

unshine Coast Councillor Anna Grosskreutz and the Cultural Heritage and Collections team have just completed a tour to see the hinterland region’s museums and heritage sites in action. The tour formed part of Cr Grosskreutz’s role as Sunshine Coast Council’s Cultural and Heritage Portfolio holder. On the agenda for the team’s second tour of the region were Kenilworth, Peachester, Landsborough and Maleny (Pattemore House and Maleny Historical Society).

Cr Grosskreutz said the purpose of the heritage tours were to visit the museums and historical societies across the region and meet with volunteers to understand their aims, priorities, and needs and how council can support them. “The tours provide an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the scope of our heritage sites’ collections and to chat one-on-one with the volunteers and management committees about council’s initiatives across the region,” she said. “As well as seeing all the great work being done, I also gained some insight into the challenges facing this sector, and what assistance they may need. “The main needs are increasing awareness and visitation to community museums by locals and tourists and creating a regional supportive network for volunteers who are the heart of the heritage sector on the Sunshine Coast.” Cr Grosskreutz chairs a Cultural Heritage Reference Group charged with providing a reference point for council on issues facing the heritage sector and make recommendations on potential priorities for allocation of levy funds and how it will be spent across the Coast. Council’s Heritage Levy Policy requires that funds will be used specifically for facilities, programs, projects and activities concerned with the preservation

and promotion of the region’s history and cultural heritage. Council’s Community Grants has a category that encourages applications for projects that enhance an understanding of, and interest in, the region’s heritage and social history. The previous heritage tour was held in August 2010. The tour visited Nambour and District Historical Museum, Buderim Historical Society and Pioneer Cottage, Eumundi Museum, Mill Place Precinct in Cooroy which includes the Butter Factory Arts Centre, and the Noosa Museum.
