new Kenilworth entry sculpture installed by Sunshine Coast Council on April 17, reflects the rich agricultural, artistic and natural heritage of the region.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the new entry sculpture, inspired by the Mary River, acknowledges the authentic historical and natural heritage of the area through an artistic project.

“The artist chosen was acclaimed local artist Cezary Stulgis who has extensive experience on large landscape projects,” Cr Rogerson said.

“The final artwork depicts symbolic imagery of local terrain, flora and fauna and is constructed out of sturdy steel designed to give a rustic appearance that will last for many years.

“The sculpture has been installed on the corner of Elizabeth and Charles Street in a prominent position to welcome visitors to the town – just in time for the busy Easter holiday break.

Artist Background Born in Poland, Cezary Stulgis is a sculptor, painter and designer whose highly distinctive work fuses ‘next-level’ aesthetics with classical craftsmanship – a reflection of his artistic roots in the street art movement of the mid-eighties and formal training as a sculptor and painter at the renowned Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Poland.

Cezary’s unique style and interdisciplinary skill-set has earned him a reputation internationally as a creative and technically proficient professional artist. His versatility finds him equally at home working with architects on large urban landscape sculpture projects or in a studio with graphic designers. He has successfully completed numerous public art commissions in Australia, Poland and the United Kingdom and continues to exhibit extensively.

t the KPC muster on Saturday 5 April 2014, Dave the farrier did a demonstration of his handy work.

It was very informative. We also focussed on jumps and improving our skills in the dressage arena. And we all shared a birthday.

On the 12-13 April, Lana and Rachael represented our club at Tewantin Noosa Pony Club’s Dressage and Combined Training event.

During the school holidays (15-17 April), Bronte, Matilda and Caeli were looking forward to learning heaps and having loads of fun at the Zone 6 Pony Club Camp at the Noosa Equestrian Centre at Tandur. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rainfall, the hard working Zone 6 organisers had to cancel the coaching clinic. We are so grateful for their

I love marshmallows, but… An actor in America scoffed down 100 of them in two minutes. Apparently they can cause you to produce lots of wind.

A little story on who we are. A question in a school quiz was “What is the name of the woman who cleans the school?” The teacher said it carried a large number of marks, stating that “In your life you will meet many people, all of them significant. They all deserve your attention and care even if all you do is smile and say hello.” Very few students could answer the question. Do you remember the name of your school cleaner?

KENILWORTH Pearce Golden Wedding

married and settled on the land in Queensland. There are six daughters and five sons, the daughters being Mrs. W. Sutton, Belli; Mrs. W. Dellit, Kilkivan; Mrs. H. Pickering, Maroochydore; Mrs. G. Sutton, Kenilworth; Mrs. W. Purdon, Kenilworth, and Mrs. R. Walters, Kenilworth. Of the five sons Mr. W. Pearce is at Goomeri and Messrs B., F., Jack and James are residing in the Kenilworth district. There are also 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr and Mrs Pearce are still hale and hearty and can still do a day’s work with the best. They were presented on their anniversary with a watch, fountain pen and travelling bag, gifts from their sons and daughters.

Lastly the Kenilworth and District Historical Association and the Gheerulla Hall Committee would like to thank all who supported the Street Stall on Easter Saturday.

n the Chronicle published 14.3.1924 a marital milestone was reported and in the detailing of family members – some of the local genealogy may be determined. The article is headed :Golden Wedding Mr and Mrs Jas Pearce of Oakey Creek Kenilworth celebrated their golden wedding at that place on March 7th last, surrounded by a goodly number of their relatives and descendants. Mr and Mrs. Pearce were married at Boldre Church, Lymington, Hampshire on March 7th 1874. One daughter was born in England, and they then emigrated to Queensland in ’75 by the sailing ship “Ophelia”. Some idea of the hardships of the early emigrants can be gained from the fact that the voyage took 104 days to accomplish and during that time 18 deaths occurred, mainly through bad and insufficient food. As a consequence, the ship, on arrival, was quarantined for nine days on Peel Island. After landing Mr and Mrs Pearce settled at “German Station” as it was then known and followed farming pursuits for a time.

Afterwards Mr Pearce found work with the Government road gangs before Divisional Boards came into operation.

In ’82 they went to Mt. Mee to work on a sugar plantation during the sugar boom which took place at that time, where they eventually selected land and resided until ’96 when they sold out. They re-selected at Kenilworth, where they have lived up to the present time.

here were very good attendances at the Kenilworth churches over Easter.

Sunday services continue to be held at 9am at both St John Bosco and St Luke’s with a shared morning tea on the second Sunday. Come and join in – the food is beautiful and the services are pretty good, too! All pretty cool – no fire and brimstone!

In the Anglican Church, Mothers Union provides supportive services to all manner of families both in Australia and abroad. This year, the country chosen to receive aid is Ethiopia with special collections in March and April.

Rev’d Dr Ray Barraclough has agreed to conduct another series of Bible studies later this year. More details later.

A wonderful ecumenical effort with a toy drive and a great street stall resulted in the sending of boxes of toys to an Anglican Mission pre-school in the Solomons. A big thank you to all who helped in any way and thanks to the Kenilworth folk and visitors who supported the street stall with their donations and purchases.

Noteworthy meetings! Pope Francis has recently met with President Obama and later with Queen Elizabeth. Their conversations would have been interesting to hear!

Other ways to protect your computer system are: 1. Keep your virus protection up to date; 2. When downloading and installing programs read notifications page by page as they come up and don’t just hit ‘OK’. People can get impatient and let pages go through during installation but they end up with a whole lot of tools and malware they don’t need.

3. Storm precautions are essential. Unplug the computer and the modem from the wall. Make sure the phone wire to the modem is also unplugged as shocks can pick up from the phone line.

4. Ensure you have a regular daily or weekly backup schedule. Grab a portable harddrive and you won’t be crying over lost photos, business docs and email contacts.

5. Keep your ‘desktop’ screen clear of ‘stuff’ and put as much as you can in folders. If you haven’t used a program for three months, get rid of it as that will clutter up the PC. iss Cheyne Lee was awarded Miss Junior Showgirl at The Gympie Times Show Ball on Saturday 12 April.

Cheyne impressed the judges and they did say that she should come back in a few years to contest the Miss Show Girl competition.

The Junior girls are able to work alongside the senior entrants to learn what is involved in organising a fundraising event and they also attend workshops that involve deportment and grooming and also learning to speak in public and also interview panel skills.

MAY IS THE HONEY MONTH

he month of May has been officially designated Australia-wide as the honey month. So here are some sweet-as facts about honey that will help you celebrate it...

Honey contains minerals, vitamins, protein, enzymes and natural sugars, as a unique, living natural energy-booster!

And to collect just one kilo of honey, bees will need to make approximately 150,000 flights, fly between 250,000 to 450,000km and visit more than one million flowers. Phew!

A strong productive beehive, in one year, produces an excess of 100 to 200kg of honey, depending on seasonal changes, and a single frame from a hive can hold up to 3kg of capped honey.

Imbil, a sweet winner

alley Bees recently hosted a Sugarbag honey competition, with Imbil proudly proving to be the sweet winner!

Sugarbag is the prized honey taken from Native Stingless Bees, and given our recent drought, heat and wet conditions, it was surprising to see 14 entries in the competition (a Queensland record), from regions all over the South East.

Winner was Pauline Alexander from Imbil, 2nd place went to Veronica and John Carley and 3rd place to Chris Fuller (see photo below from Glenbo Craig).

Visiting native bee expert from Brazil, Giorgio Venturieri, judged on the day and declared the quality to be outstanding, with points going to viscosity, clarity, colour, acidity and of course taste! Sugarbag tends to have much more of a tangy, bitey taste than our regular honeybee honey, and is proving to be incredibly popular as a boutique product.

Sugarbag, because of its limited access and availability (each stingless hive only produces between a cup and a kilo per year), is a growing market, and we hope for a future that sees a more productive native stingless industry, not just for their sweet tasted rewards, but for their vital role in pollination, crop security and a balanced eco-system.

ell 2014 has certainly started with a rush and it’s hard to believe that Easter has already come and gone.

I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing and safe Easter weekend.

This year’s Sunshine Coast Show on June 13-15 is fast approaching and one of the headline acts will be a spectacular freestyle motorcross display. All of the traditional exhibitions, competitions, attractions and entertainment will be there and it really is great value for money - with tickets only $15 for adults and $35 for a family of four, if you pre-purchase.

I’ve been providing a little help to the Show Committee in the lead up to this year’s show and let me tell you, their determination and passion for their event has been absolutely phenomenal. Cr Jenny McKay is a member of the committee that consists almost entirely of local volunteers. The amount of time and energy they put into the planning of this great event is enormous. So please show your support for their terrific work on June 13-15.

Care for endangered animals Council has recently undertaken its largest ever fauna (animal) monitoring project in a number of its environmental reserves. The $570,000, four-year project is funded by the Environment Levy and will tell council exactly what wildlife is living in these reserves and help to improve conservation management.

This great program has already produced some amazing discoveries, including an unconfirmed sighting of the endangered Coxen Fig parrot in the Upper Mooloolah Nature Refuge. Field ecologists will undertake a follow up ‘tree watch’ to confirm their sighting. This is one of the smallest and least known Australian parrots.

Planning Scheme a step closer The Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme has taken another important step forward, with council voting unanimously to adopt it in readiness for gazettal in May. The plan will continue to emphasise the unsuitability of Halls Creek as an Identified Growth Area and the more appropriate opportunity provided by the Beerwah to the Caloundra South Corridor.

Council will also continue to advocate the protection of the Sunshine Coast-Moreton Bay regional inter-urban break as an important feature for South East Queensland.

The State Planning Minister’s approval would see the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme start from May 21, with applicants having one year to lodge a development application under the old Caloundra or Maroochy schemes.

A full copy of the SC Planning Scheme will be available @ www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/planningscheme when it officially begins.

The role will see Matt working with council to assist local producers, growers and food related businesses to help showcase the region’s wide range of quality produce at events including food festivals along with regular blogs. Matt is a well-known and respected chef in the food and hospitality industries and of course his time working on the television show Ready Steady Cook means he has a high national profile with consumers. Matt said that he was looking forward to encouraging visitors to the region where they can enjoy the true ‘paddock to plate’ experience as well as appreciate the area’s natural beauty.

We have a wonderful team of dedicated Tourism Ambassadors who assist us in the promotion of the Gympie Region. Council will begin the first stage of the Kandanga Beautification works soon. The area around the memorial in Main Street will be landscaped and paved along with other works to make this area a real focal point of the township.

I

t is Easter Friday morning and I am contentedly perched on the bank of the Obi Creek awaiting the influx of Easter Campers. The feeling is quite special, particularly as it is the 10 year anniversary of this good time annual event.

There is always a little nervous energy beforehand, which of course, revolves around the weather. A couple of times conditions have been a little less than ideal, however, we have never had to broadcast a cancellation advice.

Camp site set-up is certainly easier for the Caravan Campers, however, tent and trailer camp outfits provide exciting entertainment value for keen and not to be disappointed observers.

The universal theme for the four day Easter break is to unwind and have fun. Day time activities involve kayaking, floating around the waterways in tyre tubes, tree swing diving into the Obi creek, boogie board sliding down a steep hillside, fishing, beverages and dips at noon, then upwards and onwards to night-time festivities.

Campfire capers abound, marshmallow toasting on Camphor Laurel branches, gala camp oven roast dinner on Easter Sunday night, spotlight games for the kids in the bush setting and more times than not, it is often off to bed early as we are all so weary from exciting daytime adventures.

The Easter Bunny, of course, is dutifully informed and explicit directions given on how to find us all in the Obi. It is an early rise on Easter Sunday morning. Squeals of delight abound as children discover the sugar laden surprises which have been lovingly placed in Easter nests created by the kids using recently slashed paddock grass.

Our story of connecting around an annual event is not dissimilar to many other families.

My brother in-law’s family has been caravanning down at the Burleigh Caravan Park on the Gold Coast at Christmas for over 50 years and my cousin Peter and his family enjoy an annual catch up with the Elks Family at Rainbow Beach which has occurred for 28 years. On calling the Cotton Tree Holiday Park I was informed by their manager that one family has holidayed with them for the past 70 years.

Credit must be given to the person or persons who arrange the occasion in the first instance. Without such individuals a lot of these good time events would not transpire. So thank you Tony Mitchell. You were the one who originally conceptualised the idea and ran with it. For the rest of us, it has allowed the creation of so many wonderful memories at the annual Easter Camp at Obi. MM of Obi “Enough dirt will get tracked into the tent on the first day out, that you can grow the food you need for the rest of the trip in rows between sleeping bags.”

s well as exploring numerous trails through 55 hectares of lush natural rainforest and identifying hundreds of friendly wildlife species, there’s going to be even more to entertain and inspire children at our beloved Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, with the unveiling of a unique new playground.

Environment Portfolio holder and Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the newly created facility was far from any old playground, with many innovative and interactive elements.

Cr McKay said she was always looking for opportunities to encourage and enable people of all ages and abilities to experience and enjoy the wonderful natural environment, so she was pleased the playground included many special features to make it more accessible to everybody.

“In line with Sunshine Coast Council’s focus on becoming a sustainable environment, when designing the playground we incorporated a variety of elements to ensure it would provide accessibility, interaction and enjoyment to people of most abilities,” she said.

“Special features and opportunities include: • Takura wood chip mulch and rubber softfall, suitable for prams with large wheels and 90% of wheelchairs; • the lower platform of the tree house designed to be only 400mm from the ground allowing easy access for all to the enjoy the creative activity panel;

Tall Trees Art Exhibition Cooran 16 - 18 May 2014

ooran’s annual art extravaganza - the Tall Trees Art Exhibition is on again on the weekend of 17- 18 May 2014 showcasing the talents of Cooran and surrounding hinterland artists in our ‘pop up gallery’ in the Cooran Memorial School of Arts in the main street of Cooran.

Opening hours for the exhibition are 9am to 5pm all Saturday and Sunday. The Exhibition is hosted by Tall Trees Art Inc. The official Opening Night is being staged on the evening of Friday 16 May with a preview and creative conversations from 5.30pm followed by guest speakers Councillor Bob Abbot and Matt Holmes from Highly Strung in Eumundi.

This will be the 6th Tall Trees Exhibition and this year it will feature some of the previous ‘peoples choice’ award winners including Lew Brennan and Peter Teakle.

Also exhibiting are digital photography masters, Rob Roy and Mia Hacker, glass artist Jason Makeig, painters Deb Dougherty, Lynda Black, Noela Flack, Julie Hauritz, Leigh Hooker, Lisa Jorgensen, sculptors/ceramicists Simon McVerry, Phil Willy and Faith Robinson, printmaker Shirley Strano, wood turner Jeff Fraser, just to name a few.
