SHOP FOR SUNSHINE KIDS

enilworth State Community College is again participating in the Sunshine Plaza’s Shop for Sunshine Kids. Primary schools from across the Sunshine Coast will battle it out to win a share of the $40,000 cash prize pool in this very popular community campaign. Last year, Kenilworth State Community College was one of the top 10 point earning schools on the Sunshine Coast that shared in the $40,000 prize pool. Each time a customer makes a purchase at any Sunshine Plaza store or Rebel Sport Maroochydore and takes their receipt(s) to the Customer Service Centre, they gain ‘points’ for their nominated school. The schools with the most points at the end of week six will share in the cash prize pool. To ensure that no school is disadvantaged, each school’s points will be divided by the number of students in the school, giving an ‘amount per student’. If you shop at Sunshine Plaza, please remember to help Kenilworth State Community College by registering your receipts and gaining us valued points.

As the mother of sons I cannot imagine the sense of loss experienced by the parents of these four young men – not to be able to say goodbye or even visit their last resting place in a far off land. It is their sacrifice that we honour today as well as those who have fought to defend our freedoms in all conflicts since that time.

Cooroy Library sets WINS architectural award

unshine Coast Council’s Cooroy Library has set a new benchmark for public library design by winning the Gabriel Poole Award for Building of the Year at the 2013 Sunshine Coast Regional Architecture Awards on 22 March 2013. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said the state-ofthe-art Cooroy Library had taken out top honours for its environmentally sustainable design by Brewster Hjorth Architects. “The Cooroy Library is an important element in the fabric of the local community. Not only is the library used as a recreation and information resource, it is also a terrific facility for community meetings and interpersonal gatherings,” Cr Wellington said. “It delivers a rich experience for today’s library customer - far more varied than libraries of the past. As well as the library collection, the Cooroy Library also provides Information Technology opportunities, meeting rooms, quiet reflective spaces plus areas designed especially for children. “The judges selected Cooroy Library for its contemporary architectural element which adds a distinctive quality to the rural townscape of Cooroy. The building connects the main street with the community parklands, the historical Mill site, and also the cultural arts precinct of the Butter Factory. “The judges were also impressed with the robust and low energy shell; the interior spaces, which they described as being bright and alive with colour, activity and natural light; and the flexible functionality of these spaces. “This is an award that all the community can celebrate. It was direct community input that ensured the final structure would be an integral meeting place for hinterland residents.” Brewster Hjorth Architects, known for their contemporary designs for public libraries and public spaces, worked with the community to develop the award winning Cooroy Library design. The winning projects will progress to the coveted Queensland Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on 21 June 2013.

MARY VALLEY Wedding proposal made at Networking with Mary event

T

MaryValleyVoice©2013

he Mary Valley could offer specialised wedding packages in an initiative launched at the “Networking with Mary” evening at Amamoor Lodge B&B last month. Interested tourism operators have been urged to contact James Arkle to further talks that could bring accommodation, transport, catering and venues together in a simple “celebrating with Mary” package for the happy couple. Mr Arkle is a member of the Mary Valley Country tourism marketing committee, part of the Mary Valley Inc organisation. He addressed Mary Valley tourism operators at the first of a series of “Networking with Mary” evenings designed to bring industry personnel together to promote the burgeoning Mary Valley Country region. He said the packaging and bundling concept could lend itself to other events such as family reunions, major birthdays, or silver and gold wedding anniversaries. “The committee has created strong links with key bodies including Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL), Destination Gympie Region and Gympie Cooloola Tourism but we need to get the story of Mary Valley Country out into the wider marketplace. “Our website is a one-stop shop for information about activity-based tourism in the valley, and as SCDL develops its new website, they are using information on the valley from our website” Mr Arkle said. Another way chris@stoneagecreations.com.au to ensure wider promotion of Mary Valley tourism and businesses was to launch Earthen the valley onto Pizza Ovens the international Feature Walls tourist market through the Earthen Building I n t e r n a t i o n al Stone Construction Ready Program Landscaping 0408 36 11 54 already being used by Cassie Water Features Po Box 410, Pomona 4568

Ms Head was guest speaker at the networking night where she outlined her experience with the free program which is designed to upskill tourist operators and develop products suitable for the international market. “We know Australia is high on the bucket lists of many would-be tourists, but we need enough products on the ground to satisfy them,” Ms Head said. “This program is a cost-effective way of infiltrating the international market and ensuring forward bookings for your business, which balance out the peaks and troughs of our seasonal tourism.” To inquire about Mary Valley Country, contact Mr Arkle on 5483 2112 or email tourism@themaryvalley.com.au Photo: Campingologist Cassie Head with James Arkle from the Mary Valley Country campaign and new owners of Amamoor Lodge B&B Malcolm and Christine Oakley.

“Nutrition And Wellbeing” at PERMACULTURE NOOSA

his month we are very pleased to have Dr Gary Martin from Living Valley Springs Health retreat to talk with us on “Nutrition and Wellbeing.” It is on Thursday, 16 May 2013 from 7pm at Memorial Hall, Maple St, Cooroy (Next to RSL). Gary is the director of Living Valley Springs, which was established in 1990 on the Sunshine Coast. The retreat has grown from a small operation to a staff of sixty members including five Naturopath doctors who live on the around of Kin Kin. Whilst those who wish for a pampered, toxin free holiday are accommodated, the main task of the centre is to holistically diagnose and remediate the hard to find causes of low health or ill health (Gary likens it to a Sherlock Holmes style investigation.) Elements of a patient’s lifestyle and history are explored until the doctors arrive at the multi-caused basis of the matter, after which lifestyle changes can be recommended. Gary grew up in Sydney and trained in Naturopathy in a northern New South Wales University. Married for thirtyeight years, with three children and six grand children. I am looking forward to meeting this Patriarch. Join us for an insightful evening! Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. For further info email info@permaculturenoosa.com.au

GOOD SHEPHERD PUTS THE WE IN WELLBEING

G

ood Shepherd Lutheran College has just concluded its annual Care @ GSLC week – offering up a range of activities for students from Prep to Year 12 that strived to help build their sense of wellbeing. With the theme of “Wellbeing begins with we”, the aim of the week was to provide fun and practical ways for students to understand their personal role in creating a happy environment – both at school and outside in the larger community. To encapsulate the theme, students from Prep to Year 7 were asked to design the new Care @ GSLC Week logo – with the winning design going to Nora Aubineau from Year 5. A large number of activities also formed part of the weeklong celebration including the “Cove of Thanks” - where students and staff were encouraged to put their positive thoughts into action by tying a ribbon within the Cove while thinking of those positive thoughts. “It is easy to forget all the wonderful things that we have in our lives and we felt that the CRYSTAL CLEAR RECEPTION Cove of Thanks really provided the opportunity digital TV CRYSTAL CLEARfor TV RECEPTION! to bring those Same Day Response Day Response  Same positive thoughts Technicians Local Technicians  Local & Data Points Phone & Data Points  Phone to the forefront,” Installations Vast Theatre Satellite Systems  Home said Ms Marg Hall, on-site Signal Test Quote Free signal test &and quote  FREE Good Shepherd  Counsellor. www.jimsantennas.com.au JIMA104

“The wonderful thing was not just the students, but also the staff really embraced the concept and the tying of the ribbons became quite spontaneous,” said Ms Hall. In addition to the Cove of Thanks, activities included a communal artwork project, special food stalls, music performances, the Prep and Year 12 Teddy Bear’s Picnic and a performance from the acclaimed Peedbo and Dagwood. “Good Shepherd has been holding a Care @ GSLC week for more than ten years now and every year the theme is slightly different,” said Mr Anthony Dyer, Principal Good Shepherd Lutheran College. “However, the overall concept remains very strong year after year – caring about our children and helping them grow into strong and healthy adults physically, mentally and spiritually,” said Mr Dyer. 2013 BEST IN SHOW AWARD SUNSHINE COAST AGRICULTURAL SHOW 14, 15 and 16 JUNE

ith its popular multipurpose product, and enthusiasm to participate, Maleny Avocado Oil is the first to book an exhibitor stall at this year’s Real Food Festival in September. Founded by proprietor, Bede Mackenzie, in 2007, Maleny Avocado Oil produces oil from locallygrown avocados. In its unrefined natural state, avocado oil is full of vitamins A, D and lots of E. Exhibiting at last year’s Real Food Festival was such a positive experience, Bede and his wife and coowner, Marion, made sure they signed up quickly. “We had a fantastic Festival in 2012. I love chatting to eager, happy people who want to learn more about food, especially how we as farmers and producers go about delivering great food locally.” “As the popularity of the Real Food Festival grows, I believe it will be important for all local food producers to showcase their food at this event.” Producers, chefs, demonstrations, cooking classes, gourmet food, nutrition experts, food growing advisors and more will all be on display at the Maleny Showgrounds over the weekend of 7 – 8 September 2013. With an exciting program, an expected 10,000 visitors through the gates, organisers advise exhibitors to book early to reserve their piece of the Festival action. WELLINGTON’S WAY

heerulla Creek Bridge I urge motorists to be patient during the road works to upgrade the Gheerulla Creek Bridge, on the Kenilworth Eumundi Road.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised that rehabilitation works are scheduled to begin on 6 May 2013, weather permitting and the estimated completion of early July. The bridge rehabilitation works will take place between the Pioneer Park rest area and Gheerulla Road. ANZAC Day As well as the Nambour and Cooroy Anzac services I attended services at several of our schools and community organisation. I apologise that it is impossible for me to get around to everyone. Blue Cards for Amusement Park Operators I was horrified to recently discover that amusement park operators did not need Blue Cards. This week in Parliament I asked the Minister for Communities and Child Safety Tracey Davis to review the current legislation and am pleased to report that she agreed to do so. I am sure many parents who frequent these places assume the people who work there or operate them have been through the necessary police checks and have a Blue Card. We must ensure that our children are safe and in good hands when they attend amusement parks. Until the current law can be amended I caution all parents to take care to investigate the suitability of the people who are operating these parks. I congratulate the Minister for her good sense in agreeing to review this obvious loophole in the Blue Card legislation. Nambour Hospital Car Park Update This week in Parliament I asked the Minister for Health for an update on what was being done to address the car parking problems at Nambour Hospital. In his response the Minister said that he would be receiving a report from his Department in the not too distant future and mentioned that one of the things to be considered was options where private providers have come in and been given a hand to construct car parks. Mary Valley on the Market The Newman Government announced it was finally opening the long heralded Tenant Purchase Scheme on Thursday 2 May 2013. Tenants who have been living in the property for at least six months and who have fulfilled all their lease obligations, have been asked to register their interest in buying the property at market value, which is apparently going to be determined by an independent valuer. This disenfranchises other people from being able to buy any of this land at much reduced prices. I believe there is no way the government can get a fair price for any of these properties unless they are put on the open market. MP Peter Wellington

he Town Beautification Project for Kandanga, public info day has been hosted, and the public consultation sessions kick-start stage one of GRC Rural Towns Beautification Program. The project aims to contribute to the ongoing sustainability of rural towns by making them more attractive and desirable places to live, work and play. Gympie Regional Council – supporting a strong and vibrant community. For more info about council activities, phone 5481 0644 or visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au Destination Gympie Region’s first networking evening was held on Tuesday 16 April. It was a great success, with more than 50 representatives attending from across the tourism industry, including Acting CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Limited Ian McNicol. Our networking evenings are for all tourism related businesses who can get together and meet each other along with the volunteers, and embrace an all of industry approach. This event also provided an update on projects underway, including Destination Gympie Region’s first strategic plan, website and a new holiday guide. The Gympie Region Tourism Advisory Committee will be comprised of five industry representatives and will provide vital stakeholder input and direction to Destination Gympie Region. Mary Valley Heritage Rail is holding their monthly Twilight Markets on Saturday 15 June. There will be a mix of stalls and also Rail Motor Shuttles running on that evening. I encourage everybody to go along and support MVHR and try to keep this iconic attraction functioning. For info contact the office on 5482 2750 or facebook. Imbil Swimming Club presentation night was held on Thursday 18 April with a huge success by the team. There certainly is a lot of talent in the Imbil team and I look forward to seeing some of the award winners names up in lights in the future. Congratulations to all involved, organisers and parents alike. Imbil Rural Watch held, yet again, a very successful Crimestoppers Bowls Day at Imbil on Sunday 21 April. This is proving to be a very successful fundraiser indeed. Many thanks to Joy and her band of helpers. By the time you read this newsletter, the bridge in Amamoor should have started to be replaced. There will be a period of time that access to Amamoor by people will be difficult, but this is short term and in the long run the bridge will be just wonderful. Register your unwanted chemicals with Agsafeonline at www.chemclear.com.au or check out the chemical muster site on www.agsafe.com.au Remember, the old Bruce Highway at Skyring Ck Rd exit is still 90km/hr so don’t get caught out thinking that it has reverted back to 100km/hr. MARY VALLEY Rogo’s round-up

P

coach really stepped up and played a brilliant game earning him the Players’ Player. Next Saturday’s game will be at Coolum against Coolum in the main game for the day we anticipate a great game again believing the boys can step up for a great game.

ickering Bridge Work has started at Pickering Bridge on the replacement of the old single lane timber bridge with a new two lane concrete bridge. It will be a huge improvement for locals and quarry drivers that travel along the road every day. The existing bridge will remain open while the new one is constructed further downstream. Isaac Moore Park Construction of the new picnic shelter and BBQ area at Isaac Moore Park in Kenilworth has been travelling at a good pace given the great weather we’ve been having. The construction phase is always a bit of an eye sore with the safety fencing that makes it look like a work site but I’m sure it’s going to look great when it’s finally completed in the coming weeks. Regional Arts Development Fund The latest round of the RADF minor grants is now open and artists and arts workers are invited to apply for up to $2000 in funding. It is an opportunity for artists to develop their careers by supporting their training and skills development. Contact the RADF Liaison Officer on (07) 5441 8385 to talk about your proposal. Applications are open until 1 June. Catch you in the Valley. Cr Greg Rogerson

T

he Stags have their first win under their belts after a very decisive win against Kawana last month with the score being 50 to 14. Our boys had extremely good defence going into tackles with two and three players every time. With the Stags dominating possession they created every chance to leap ahead with confidence to take out the easy win. Try scorers were Ryan Osbourn 2, Brett Warren 2, Josh Ryan 2, Chad Parker 1, Aaron Parker 1 and Ashley Grant 1 with Troy Carlson kicking 7 goals. The Players Player was Ryan Osbourn, who was chosen by the players. The ground at Jack Spicer oval looked a treat and the President Glenn Carlson gave a quick rundown on the history, to celebrate the first game played after the reconstruction of the oval. Outside tacklers Josh Ryan and Brett Warren from the Stags.

W

ith the Stags nearly running a full strength team they easily defeated the Yandina Raiders 42-0 at Kawana on Saturday. A couple of new recruits in Joshua Dunchue and Sheldon Goodin added a good solid base for the team to work with also with the return of Kaden Dickfos adding a good depth to player strength. Our regular players were there in strength, not giving Yandina any room to move. Tries went to Cameron Waugh 1, Lance Fenton 2, Brett Warren 1, Joshua Ryan 1, Troy Carlson 1, James Hogan 2 and Troy Carlson kicked five goals. James Hogan the assistant
