KENILWORTH Kenilworth State Community College Remembers the ANZACS

T

here was silence around the college grounds on Tuesday April 24 as the Kenilworth State Community College held a special parade to commemorate ANZAC Day. The school welcomed special guests from our RSL: Mr Jim Mckillop and Mrs Sonja Kallman along with fellow veterans and parents. College Principal Micheal Grogan addressed the assembly telling of the significance and importance of Anzac Day. Mrs Kallman spoke to the school about her experiences as a school child during the second World War growing up in Mareeba. It is hard to imagine having to dig shelters and having the school taken over by soldiers preparing to stop the country being invaded. Two of our School Leaders, Chris Monteleone and Grace Bell spoke at the ceremony delivering the Ode and a Prayer for the soldiers past and present. Special thanks to our RSL visitors for helping our college community commemorate ANZAC Day.

Cross Country at Kenilworth SCC

K

enilworth State Community College held their Cross Country on Thursday 3 May. After a few weeks of practice the day started with some passionate renditions of war cries the competition was on; Waratah versus Banksia. The racing began with the 11, 12 and 13 year old boys running 3km in front of a healthy crowd that continued to build as the morning went on and word of the great racing spread. It was a hotly contested event Kai Fenton-Leslie pipped Christopher Monteleone at the post to win the 3km event. In an amazing display of gut running both boys were exhausted at the finish. The 11, 12 and 13 year old girls were up next and again all of the girls showed great spirit to do their best and run the race out.

The final event on the program was the 1km run for the 5 to 7 year olds. The race began in a flurry of activity, with one competitor so excited he started to run the course backwards. Once all competitors were on the right track we saw some of the best racing and biggest smiles of the day. The Cross Country again showed the fighting spirit and never give up attitude of our great kids here at Kenilworth. Perhaps one of the best displays of this was Zane Hollran who raced in the 3km event with an ankle injury and refused to give up until he had finished the course. After receiving medical treatment Zane came back to school and finished the day in class. The competition between the two houses, Banksia and Waratah was also fierce on the day. Both houses were tied coming into the last event. Would the sensational swimmers that helped Waratah win the swimming be as comfortable on the land and win the Cross Country was the questions on everyone’s lips. Pipping their great rivals Banksia and too much fanfare, Waratah won the house competition by 5 points. House Leaders Bradley Bartlem and Taysha Barkle-Tolley proudly collected the Cross Country Shield for their house (photo below), bringing to a close another great day of racing at Kenilworth State Community College. Congratulations to our Age Champions: 13 Years – Christopher Monteleone 12 Years – Tom Henderson and Taysha Barkle-Tolley 11 Years – Kai Fenton Leslie and Chloe Nutter 10 Years – Beau Henderson and Synegee Cleveland 9 Years – Zeke Evans and Ruby Pascoe 8 Years – Kieron Bradford and Shameka Jackson 7 Years – Jamison Barkle 6 Years – Tobi Engle and Ember Deans-Hughes 5 Years – Jai Hopkins

The next event was the 2km run for the 8, 9 and 10 year olds. Again we saw some close racing and competitors pushing themselves to do their best. In what was the closest racing of the day we saw Buster Pascoe, Zeke Evans and Jacob Trace battling each other over the entire 2km course never more than a few metres apart. The racing took its toll though with Buster getting a stitch 80m from the finish to come across the line for a very honourable third. Jacob and Zeke however were not done yet and fought tooth and nail up the finishing straight. With the lead changing several times in the final 40 metres the crowd was up on their feet cheering as Zeke slipped in front in the final five metres to take out the 9 years title.

KENILWORTH APRIL 2012 65.9mm over 11 days Report kindly submitted by Michael Pfeiffer

KENILWORTH NZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, 1915. Our soldiers who fought there created a legend which gave rise to the term “the ANZAC spirit”. Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objective, the outstanding courage and resourcefulness of the Australian soldiers left a powerful legacy that endures today. This spirit has a meaning and a relevance as the embodiment of courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifice which was shown not just by the original ANZACS but by Australian military personnel in all operations in which Australia has been (and is today) involved. To honour all the fallen in those wars and the returned servicemen and women, a special day is set aside for that purpose. ANZAC Day is a day to remember and give thanks to those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Kenilworth was one of the thousands of cities, towns and overseas military bases where Australians met on Wednesday, 25 April 2012, to pay homage and remember those to whom we owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. The Committee of the Kenilworth R.S.L. were very pleased to see how many town folk and visitors came to commemorate ANZAC Day. We had prepared for a hundred. There were many more. Thank you. Thank you also to Bradley, our butcher, who not only donated the sausages but cooked them as well – and thank you to his willing helpers. Many thanks to others who contributed to this day – the Hall Committee; the baker who donated the bread; the ladies who cooked ANZAC biscuits for the morning tea after the ceremony; the students who wrote essays; those who marched with the returned servicemen. Thank you to Les Speed, our Speaker, who did his best to carry on when the microphone failed. He and his wife knocked on my door at 6.15 am and asked where the Dawn Service was and why I wasn’t ready! He certainly was! Once again this year the shops and businesses in Kenilworth helped the R.S.L. with monetary donations or materials. We would like to thank: Kenilworth Rural; Boxsells; Kenilworth Garage; Kenilworth News; Nanna McGinns; Yabaloomba Retreat; Kenilworth Surgery; Kenilworth Realty; Kenilworth Vet Clinic; Kenilworth Chemist; Kenilworth Homestead; Kenilworth Bed & Breakfast; Kenilworth Post Office; Kelli’s Place Hairdressing; 4-Square; Top Cafe. If I have left anyone out, my apologies. Thank you to the private citizens who also helped with donations. Kenilworth Bowls Club definitely deserves an honourable mention for raising a considerable amount of money and for offering the use of its facilities to the R.S.L. for the traditional gathering after the parade and service.

the simple words of a child that show an emerging patriotism. Our country will be in good hands in the future with children like him who will one day have the responsibility to protect our freedom. Here us his essay: ANZAC Introduction The First World War was about a war between the British and the Turkish; the Australians came to help the British. This war was held in Gallipoli in 1915. My Ancestry My great grandad Cecil James Thompson was born in Brisbane Qld 6th of November1925. He fought 1944-1945. He was a pilot in the 40 squadron in the 2nd world war. He helped keep our country in peace. Why ANZAC Day is Important to me ANZAC Day is important to me because if the ANZACs didn’t go to war our country would be a mess. They sacrificed their families, possessions and loved ones. I am very thankful to the ANZACs that fought to keep our country standing. The 8,709 soldiers who died in the Gallipoli war died with dignity, courage and strength to our country. We will always remember the ANZACs through generations. Lest we forget. Australian soldiers who fought for all our freedom, so today we live peacefully. Never stop fighting because in the end we will bring freedom. Zulu was a squadron that fought for us and them. ANZAC day is a day to remember for all the soldiers that fought in the wars. Cecil James Thompson will be remembered for his heroicness to our country.

Although, along with addressing lifestyle and environmental factors, I have found herbal, nutritional and energetic medicines to be invaluable tools in enhancing and optimising our body function and wellbeing.” Dee Humphreys will also be giving a talk about Edible Herbs. Dee not only eats weeds as part of her daily edible greens, she also teaches others how to enjoy them. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. ood Shepherd Lutheran College is excited to be opening their doors to prospective students and their families for their annual Open Day on Tuesday 22 May. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the College in action – including meeting some of the friendly staff and students, taking a tour of the campus, enjoying morning or afternoon tea and participating in activities. “We are proud to be able to invite prospective students and their parents to come and take a look at our wonderful co-educational Prep-prep to Year 12 College,” says Mr Dyer, Principal of Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Noosaville. “We also understand that when parents are considering a school for their children they might feel more comfortable attending an Open Day rather than attending a one on one appointment – which we also offer throughout the year.” Good Shepherd is a well-established College, which offers students a quality education set in an environmentally friendly bushland setting, and boasts an array of facilities including a state-of-the-art library, 25 metre pool, indoor Health and Physical Education Complex and Performing Arts theatre. Mr Dyer is also keen to point out that along with interactive and up-to-date technologies, and an excellent record of academic success, the College has a strong commitment to Christian values and beliefs with a focus on pastoral care and looking after the needs of students. “The College is proud of its reputation of retaining qualified, professional teaching and supporting staff who are committed to providing a very caring and nurturing environment for our students. “We are also the only independent school on the Sunshine Coast that is offering the International Baccalaureate program for the primary and middle years,” says Mr Dyer. he Obi Obi hall (now 99 years old) is in the final stages of a major renovation with completion expected in June this year. We are upgrading it to current building standards with the addition of toilets, a kitchen and disabled access. Once finished, it will be available for public and private hire, as well as being a centre for community events. The hall is owned by three Trustees on behalf of the communities of Kidaman Creek and Obi Obi, one of them being the “Obi Obi and Kidaman Creek District Community Hall Association Inc”. Originally there were separate halls in each community (both built on land donated by local landholders), owned in trust by two different community associations, The ownership of the Obi Obi hall reverted to the Public Trustee in the 1970’s, due to the death of the last Trustee. In 1995 the Kidaman Creek Hall was demolished by strong winds. After determined fundraising by the community and assistance from the Jupiter’s Casino Community

Benefit Fund, it was replaced by a new “tin shed” hall in October 1998. In late 1996 the stewardship of the Obi Obi hall property was passed to the Kidaman Creek Community Hall Association Inc. The Association changed both its name and membership eligibility to welcome Obi Obi residents. Eventually in 2008, with neither hall able to adequately fulfill the community’s needs, the Kidaman Creek Hall property was sold to provide funds to aid in the renovation of the Obi Obi hall. In 2011 a sucessfull grant application to Sunshine Coast Regional Council provided the extra funds needed to commence the restoration project. Over the last 40 years, a core group of local people have maintained interest in and supported the continuation of the presence of the halls in the Kidaman and Obi Obi districts. Without their efforts the ongoing existence of the hall properties and the almost completed restoration of the Obi Obi hall would not have happened. We look forward to the coming day when the Obi Obi Hall will again play a vital role in our community.

OUR COMMUNITY Medicine From our Gardens

W

alking past my herb garden today I was struck by how big and healthy my basil plants are looking. Having had all summer to develop, they will fade soon as winter is definitely setting in. It would be a great shame to have it go to waste, so I’ll turn it into pesto. Basil has been used as medicine all over the world for thousands of years, as an aid against bloating, digestive cramps, flatulence and colic. It has a great relaxant effect, both on the intestinal walls, and also on the mind, making it extremely good for stress relief. Of particular interest is the effectiveness of basil in treating internal parasites, especially yeast infections such as Candida albicans. In order to have this effect it is best if basil is consumed raw, which is why pesto is so useful as a versatile pasta sauce, dip, or as part of a salad dressing. My pesto recipe also contains both garlic and pumpkin seeds (instead of the traditional pine nuts), which are both potent weapons against Candida infections. World Environment Day Festival opportunities to have some fun!

F

or 32 years the Sunshine Coast has hosted the biggest environmental Festival in south-east Queensland. Attracting over 7,000 visitors in one day, the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival is a free family fun day with an important message. “With our partners, Sunshine Coast Council, University of Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast TAFE; SCEC is once again organising the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival. There are some cutting edge and quirky exhibits this year from all over the world, says Matt Dineen, Festival Coordinator, Sunshine Coast Environment Council. There are seven themed areas where exhibitors will promote sustainable products and services. Visitors are encouraged to ‘see, hear and do’ this year, so each area will also have games, competitions and speakers. As people move through the event, they will have the chance to eat away at a giant green consumer footprint that represents our current lifestyle consumption. Each person can minimise the footprint by participating in the event and making some informed choices around their behavioural choices. “We’re currently looking for people who are passionate about sustainability and our environment to come along and help out. There’s plenty of opportunity to volunteer on the day or help out prior to the event on Sunday 3 June 2012. “We need the help of our Sunshine Coast community to make this event a success, so we are calling for residents to contact us and volunteer. Just go to http://www.scec. org.au/wed.html and see the range of opportunities available, says Matt. “The more people who are active in helping to protect this special part of the world, the better life will be for all of us.

unshine Coast Council proudly presents a talk by Peter Mulready, Australian author of Cross the Vatican Line, at various library locations across the Coast. Peter has woven mystery into his rollicking tale of the 16th century voyage to Australia and will share his quest for the truth about the tales of the sighting of a Mahogany ship wreck off the Victorian Coast near Warrnambool in 1836. Peter served for eight years in the Royal Australian Navy before pursuing a corporate and business career. Come and hear Peter talk about his latest novel, the topic of which sparked interest in him as a child. OUR COMMUNITY Signage Grant for Crystal Waters

C

rystal Waters Community Co-operative has gratefully received a Community Development Grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to develop signage to enhance the experience of visiting Crystal Waters. Crystal Waters is well-known to many interstate and overseas visitors as a result of its connections to permaculture and eco village networks. The property is primarily residential, and when visitors arrive without notice there may be no-one to greet or direct them. We want visitors to enjoy their experience, and to easily find their accommodation and information pertinent to their stay. We aim for unplanned visitors to have the best possible access to the facilities they want, both in and around Crystal Waters. Rob Clarke is a local artist and signwriter with many years experience and connections with community in and around Maleny. We are delighted to have Rob’s assistance in bringing this exciting project to fruition through a series of free workshops with the community, starting with a community consultation workshop on the overall design, content and location of the sign to be erected on the Village Green. If you are interested in being involved in any of the stages of the project (design, painting, construction, installation) please register your interest, call Sybil on 5494 4590, or email facilities@crystalwaters.org.au

The Wizard of Weaving

R

enown Sunshine Coast fibre artist, Kris Martin will be at the 2012 Noosa Festival of Water on Sunday 24 June to teach the art of weaving using environmental weeds such as the Cat’s Claw Creeper vine. Kris is a master of the art of weaving, having spent more than 20 years fine tuning his skills and producing an amazing array of woven artworks using environmental weeds and recycled materials wherever possible in his creations. Kris’s use of Cat’s Claw vine as a weaving material not only produces durable long lasting artworks and basketry, but also helps to educate people about the very serious threat that Cat’s Claw poses to our local ecology. A native of central and southern America, Cat’s Claw is a perennial vine which is well suited to our local climate. As well as carpeting the ground preventing regeneration of native species, it also climbs up into trees eventually smothering and killing canopy vegetation. The threat of Cat’s Claw is so great that is has recently been declared a Weed of National Significance, which will hopefully ensure support from the Commonwealth for its control and hopefully eradication. Meanwhile, Kris will be encouraging people to do their bit by harvesting Cat’s Claw when they see it to use in weaving projects. If you would like to learn the art of weaving at the Festival, please contact the Lake Macdonald Catchment Care group on 07 5482 4766 or email lakemacgroup@ozwide.net.au for more info or to make a booking. Cost for the workshop is $20 per person which includes all materials and bookings are essential as places are limited. The Festival will celebrate Green June at the Noosa Botanic Gardens in Lake Macdonald Drive, Cooroy.
