Kenilworth First response group

K

FR is a community based group that receives support from Queensland Ambulance Service, however the funding does not cover all costs associated with purchasing and maintaining the two response vehicles that are driven by the volunteer First Responders. One of the ways we raise money is flag marshalling at Green Park Conondale where motorbike riders race around the track and if a rider comes off their bike it is the responsibility of the flag marshallers to alert oncoming riders. Flag marshalling is currently done by a combination of volunteers in the district and First Responders and is one of

the major fundraising activities for Kenilworth First Response. If you are interested in motorcross or just want to help the Kenilworth First Response group with flag marshalling or any other fundraising that the group does why not call us to find out more.

We would like to say a special thank you to all the present and past volunteers who have given their time willingly (and had lots of fun) to stand in the heat, wet and dust to help generate these much needed funds, there are too many to mention – you all know who you are, so thank you on behalf of Kenilworth First Response. Dear Editor, Thanks to the Mary Valley Artslink for putting on two wonderful workshops. Drawing and then working with pastels. Both workshops tutored by the very talented and excellent artist Pat Cale. We had a great group of students from the Mary Valley. And it was nice to see some new faces. The venue and the food were fantastic. Thank you to Debbie and Bruce for looking after us with such great care. It is a pleasure to partake in workshops that are well organised and tutored by talented artists. I look forward to the next one. Veronika Spicer November 20, 2013 |

KENILWORTH Gheerulla Hall Cent Sale

T

he Gheerulla Hall Cent Sale is to be held on Friday December 6, commencing at 6.30pm. Sausage sizzle begins at 6pm. For those who have never attended a Cent Sale (and there are some) - the following advice may be of assistance. Preparation 1. Tickets are sold as a sheet that all bear the same number and come with a stub and special draw ticket – both of these are retained by the purchaser. The stub is used to claim prizes. The Special Draw Ticket is deposited in the bin provided (for the “Special” draws) and the rest of the tickets are used for the ‘bids’. 2. Tickets are purchased in sheet form - each sheet contains 22 tickets of the same number:(a) 20 of these tickets are used to “bid” on an auction item (b) one ticket is held for identification to validate a “sale” (c) one ticket is for the “Special Draw” sessions held at later in the evening 3. It is useful to pre-purchase your tickets, six sheets for $5.00 4. Pre-purchased tickets may then be separated along the perforated lines and stored in a large plastic bag or icecream container 5. The identification stub should be kept separately on a clip board or similar - this stub must be produced to validate a “sale” 6. The Special Draw stubs should be kept separate from the bid tickets - until requested to deposit them into the “Special Draw” bin for the special draw session. Application 1. The prizes are displayed on tables beside which are bidding containers and patrons may IN THE bid for each MARY VALLEY particular prize by LIC #69039

Postal Notes

hristmas is just around the corner – just over one month to go. Kenilworth Post Office is gearing up to meet all your Christmas needs – postage of course, best way to send presents, and a wide range of “value for money” gift ideas. Postage Rates - Australia Post has again introduced a reduced postage rate for “Christmas Card only” letters. For a standard sized card, it is 55 cents (instead of the normal 60 cents) and for large cards the postage is $1.10 (instead of the normal $1.20). International “card only” letters will vary in cost depending on where they are being sent to. International stamps are GST free and therefore you should not use Domestic stamps (which include GST) on international letters or parcels. Special Christmas stamps are now on sale. Letters to Santa Claus - It is also time to start helping the youngsters in the community think about what presents they would like to ask Santa to bring them for Christmas. Santa has a special address again this year – Santa Claus, North Pole, Post Code 9999. If your child is sending a letter to Santa, remember to put a full name (including surname) as well as a full return address on the back of the envelope. It is also important to put a stamp on the front of the envelope. Remember that Santa receives a lot of mail just before Christmas so by placing the full name and address of the sender on the back of the envelope, it is highly likely that Santa might find time to send back a postcard. We have a special “Santa” mailing box located inside the Post Office. Gifts - Kenilworth Post Office has a wide selection of gifts available for all ages. As we are a Licensed Post Office, we offer a wider range of gifts than just those from the Australia Post catalogue. Our motto has always been good quality at a low price. Santa even gets some of his ideas for presents from the Post Office. We have lots of small gifts which would make ideal stocking fillers. If all other ideas fail, make a selection from our range of gift cards. Kenilworth Welcomes Santa Claus - Once again, Kenilworth will be holding a Christmas party at the Showgrounds on Tuesday 24 December. One of the highlights is Santa arriving to distribute presents to all the children at 7.00pm. By visiting any of the shops in Kenilworth (including the Post Office) that sell gifts and are displaying the “Santa shops here” signs, details can then be provided to ensure that Santa does not miss your child at the Christmas party. Finally, as we head into the Christmas season, I would like to remind our customers that the mail leaves Kenilworth each weekday at 5pm. Please be considerate by not parking in the Mail Truck’s designated spot after 4.30pm as he will have a huge amount of mail to load onto his truck by 5pm. Robyn, Michael and family extend to all their best wishes for the Christmas season and look forward to seeing you in 2014. Kenilworth Post Office is open Monday – Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, Saturday 8.30am to 12.00pm all year round except Public Holidays.

1930 Community Pre-wedding Celebration

T

he Nambour Chronicle (12.12.1930, page 8) reported:Pre-Wedding Evening A large gathering assembled in the Lower Kenilworth Hall on Wednesday 3rd instant, in honour of Miss L.J. Sims, whose marriage to Mr. E. Dobson takes place this week. Little James Hassall presented the guest of the evening with a bouquet of blue hydrangea and fern, tied with satin streamers. The bride-elect wore a rosepink mariette frock, the skirt being three tier with uneven hem to the ankles. Mr. A. Burley, in a few well chosen remarks, asked Miss Sims to accept a handbag of notes as a small token of the high esteem in which she is held by residents of the district, and wished her a happy and prosperous married life. Miss Sims, who has been treasurer and an active member of the Ladies’ Hockey Club was also the recipient of a beautiful crystal vase from that body. Miss Pickering (captain of the club) made the presentation. Miss Sims feelingly responded. The evening was spent in dancing and cards. The Kenilworth band supplied the music and extras were played by Misses E. and P. McGinn and Mr. E. Loweke. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. Breaking-Up Festivities Breaking-up festivities were held in the Coolabine State School on Saturday, 6th instant, and took the form of a concert, Christmas Tree and dance. There was a large gathering and the takings amount to £8/10/-. The children who were capably trained by the head teacher (Miss E. Ginn) contributed the following programme:Overture: Mr. T. Milady; eurythmic exercise by the girls; recitation “Daddy and Babsie” Win Johnson; dialogue “A Sick Doggie” Allan Holt and M. Sutton; recitation “Dirty Face” Normie Johnstone; dramatisation “Old King Cole” by infants; duet “Where are you going to my pretty maid” Eileen Woods and I Holt; recitation “Little Cock Sparrow” Roy Bocos; recitation “Fairies” Thelma Johnson; playette “A Costly Joke” senior pupils; Mr G.B. Sutton who was well disguised as Santa Claus then handed out gifts to the children. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. River Bridge and Approaches Mr. Marshall, the contractor for the bridge over the Mary River, near the Kenilworth township, has completed the job. Another gang of men are now employed forming the approaches. Everyone is hoping the work will be completed before the wet season sets in. Historic Note: Mary River Bridge was officially opened on December 5, 1931 (Nambour Chronicle, 11.12.1931). Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth & District Historical Assn Inc. November 20, 2013 |

KENILWORTH PROFILE OF A LOCAL BUSINESS

K

The MVV will be featuring one of our local business on a regular basis as a way of introducing the people behind the business advertisements.

enilworth Rural Supplies is a small family owned business in the Mary Valley. Proprietors Shane and Kym Smith purchased the business in April of 2011 and have hit the ground running. With Shane’s 20 years’ experience in the outdoor power industry it was only natural that they introduced mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters and ride on’s to the business. A full small engine workshop is also available to cater from outdoor power products to Quad bikes. This adds to the fencing, hardware, stock and pet food range, and plumbing supplies that were already stocked. They employ four staff members, each of which bring their own unique experience. John Rodwell, Kym’s father has long been a member of the local community. With his mechanical skills and knowledge of farming he is able to help in a variety of ways. Shane and Kym’s sister in law, Theresa Rodwell takes care of the hardware and plumbing. Having spent a number of years working for a large gas fitting business she has become quite familiar in this field. Chris Hughes lives in Imbil on a small acreage and has an interest in cattle and gardening. Chris does most of the deliveries and stocking of shelves and looking after the seedlings and greenhouse.

MARY VALLEY “Keep the bridge” call gains strong community support

A

petition of 1250 signatures calling for the retention of Pickering Bridge at Moy Pocket was presented recently to both Gympie Regional Council and Sunshine Coast Council. As the new replacement, a higher, concrete bridge nears completion, Councils are in a unique position to keep the old bridge for pedestrian use. Nearby quarry owner Boral had earlier indicated support for a good outcome and recently committed to contributing $3000 per year to the cost of keeping the old bridge, and to supply extra rock to further stabilise it. The petition has been circulating for just over a month and has drawn strong community support, culminating in its last day of signing at the Mary River Festival in Kandanga. The initial aim was to gather a thousand signatures and the response has been truly overwhelming. The process began when Council was asked to include a walkway on the new bridge, recognising that the location is a popular spot to visit to swim or kayak. Traffic on the new bridge will represent a significantly greater safety threat for pedestrians given that traffic, and particularly trucks, will be travelling much faster than on the old bridge. Despite this, Council engineers advised that making the new bridge wider to make a pedestrian walkway would be too expensive and attention then moved to the possibility of keeping the old bridge, solely for pedestrians. This situation presents both councils with a unique opportunity to share costs to enable something that will be a real community asset at a spot on the river that is already well-known and well-visited. Sunshine Coast Council, through Councillor Greg Rogerson, has certainly investigated the request but seeks a financial commitment from Gympie Regional Council to share the cost. It would be sad indeed if both Councils passed up the chance and turned a deaf ear to the request of so many petitioners.

OUR COMMUNITY STUDENTS LEARN THE GIFT OF GIVING

G

ood Shepherd Lutheran College secondary students concluded their Salvation Army Christmas Appeal on Friday 1 November by presenting Christmas gifts for their “adopted” families to Lieutenants David and Lara Sutcliffe from the Noosa Corps of The Salvation Army. Every student from Year 8 -12 participated in the appeal through the College’s 24 Pastoral Care groups, with each group “adopting” one needy person from five different families in the Noosa area who will be doing it tough this Christmas. Lieutenant Lara Sutcliffe was amazed by the number of gifts as she accepted them on behalf of the recipients, who range from toddlers to teenagers, through to parents. “We are completely overwhelmed with the fantastic generosity you have shown here today and you should all be really proud of yourselves,” she said. “We cannot do what we do without your help as we are just the hands that pass these gifts on.” “It is because of your generosity these kids will wake up on Christmas morning to Santa Claus. There won’t be an empty tree; there will be hope.” Only two weeks ago, Lieutenants David and Lara Sutcliffe visited the College to launch the Good Shepherd Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, with the help of the school’s Community Senior Leader Group. It was during this visit that they spoke to the students of the desperate need that exists within our local community at this time of year and asked them for their help in bringing Christmas to five local families. According to Mr Tony Purcell, Pastoral Care Co-ordinator at Good Shepherd, this appeal has proven to be a huge success over the past few years and a very worthwhile addition to the Pastoral Care program. Addressing students at the assembly, Mr Purcell said, “It is likely that you will never meet your gift recipients and see the smiles on their faces that will be there because of your generosity. However, know in your hearts that you have made a difference here today.” “As a Christian school, this is a very real demonstration of what we strive for – PH 5446 9298 • 0413 012 398 the core values of Residential • Rural • Commercial love, service and compassion.” New work, Repairs, Renovations

Kids create ultimate theatre experiment

T

he Mary Valley Artslink theatre in technology project has taken on 18 young people from the region to collaborate and create their very own technological experiment. Kids are filming projects and exploring new ideas to create illusions that confront reality. The ability to create a scene and ultimately discard it for a new and better idea has encouraged greater confidence and acceptance within the group. Director Tony Kishawi, from Interact Youth Theatre describes it as “disposable theatre, where you can be comfortable in the knowledge that you have the creativity to take an idea, reduce it, re-use it, or throw it out and try again”. Next experiment involves bringing imagination to life through ‘3D motion capture’ technology. John Haag’s Theatre of Animation has enabled interaction with this type of technology for perhaps the first time in Queensland. This is the technology used by sports medicine to improve performance and Hollywood blockbusters to create animated characters like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. The suit detects movement which can be projected onto a screen and be used to animate people and characters. The project will culminate on November 30 at 7pm at Kandanga Hall with a theatrical creation by young people using storytelling and technology as their vehicle. You can discover more about the producers at www.interactyouththeatre.com.au and www. theatreofanimation.com For more info please contact Project Coordinator Lesa Bell on 0428 193 156 or lesa.bell@bigpond.com

OUR POLITICS Rogo’s round-up

I

’ve tried every avenue I can think of to try and save the original Moy Pocket (old Pickering) bridge from removal. Because the new bridge is upstream of the old bridge the technical engineers are concerned that there is a risk from turbulence at the base of the bridge that may create large enough eddies that will impinge on the integrity of the new bridge. It has been estimated that it will cost two hundred and eight five thousand dollars over twenty years to maintain the old bridge and I’m still giving it my best shot to raise the capital and keep the bridge. I would like to heap lots of praise onto Boral Pty Ltd, the owners of the Moy Pocket Quarry, for the manner in which they have engaged with myself and the Sunshine Coast Council and the generous financial support offered thus far. Even if the old bridge cannot be retained I feel certain the ongoing rapport and collaboration generated thus far with Boral will pave the way for future projects. Christmas is on the horizon and it’s a good time to think about shopping locally to support the local economy. By buying locally, it’s not just one local business you are helping – it’s also all the local suppliers of that business which, in turn, creates local employment and that helps the economy grow and prosper. The 2014 Picture Sunshine Coast heritage calendar has just been launched by Council just in time for the festive season. The heritage calendar is an excellent way to see how the Coast looked in the good old days. You can pick one up at Kenilworth library for $5 and enjoy the classic photos of pioneer families, familiar landscapes, people and local heritage places. Catch you in the Valley.
