“Bottlemart Voted Best Independent Retail Banner Group at the Australian Liquor Industry Awards”

KENILWORTH ear Editor,

ell, what a fortnight! It began with our muster on 24th September, with Mellissa Flood and Belinda Short instructing. The riders enjoyed jumping and flat work in the morning. In the afternoon they had a great time playing games, organised by Rob Egel, including musical mats – two ways, sack race and lolly in the bucket (of course!). Zone 6 camp was held the following week, with Caitlyn Boon – sitting D certificate, Ella Skoupy, Romy McCullough, Winona Emery – sitting D* certificate, Sarah Reardon and Jessie Falconer all attending. Ella Skoupy, Romy McCullough and Jessie Falconer then rode the Saturday after camp at Caloundra Equitation Jumping. Jessie Falconer was awarded Reserved Champion for 15-17 years age group. Jessie rode on Sunday in D Grade placing 4th overall. “When you’re young and you fall off a horse, you may break something. When you’re my age, you splatter.” Roy Rogers RIDER PROFILE Rider’s Name: Tanya Hibbard Horse’s Name: Jazz Sensation Type of Horse: Thoroughbred How long have you been a member of KPC for? 2 years Favourite Pony Club event: Anything slow! Best Pony Club memory: Kenilworth Hack Day (even in the rain!)

My husband, Glen Spicer, was a foundation member of the Kenilworth Arts Council and Secretary for some years. He had a major role in establishing the very first Kenilworth Art Exhibition and consolidating it as a key art event. When Glen died in 1999, Kenilworth Arts Council dedicated the Glen Spicer Memorial Peoples’ Choice Award in his memory. A similar award, the Jean Glanvill Memorial Landscape Prize, was established to honour the memory of another foundation member – a lady who worked very hard too in those early years to support this art exhibition. It is with sadness and disappointment that I note that the Kenilworth Arts Council has dropped the Glen Spicer Memorial Peoples’ Choice Award. It is a shame that the valuable work and the memory of a founding member can be so easily dismissed. Veronika Spicer www.bellbirdcreek.com

We don’t often publish a lot of this work that we do behind the scenes. The Mary Valley Voice is posted free to residents over a large area of the Mary Valley. To keep operating, the MVV relies on revenue from advertising. We try very hard to keep our advertising rates as low as possible. Our policy on general editorial has always been to publish this free and this is still the case. We welcome your stories. Our policy on editorials from businesses and organisations which give details on commercial undertakings and costs or events with admission prices is to treat these as “advertorials” – advertising, at advertising rates. We welcome your editorial which will reach over 2 200 readers. However, if goods or services with costs, or admission prices, times and venues are included in the editorial, please know that these will attract a small advertising fee of $30 for small articles and $70 for 250 words. embers of the Australasian Touring Caravan Motorhome and Camping Club descended on Kenilworth recently for a rally and enjoyed nine day of activities including lawn bowls, tag-along drives and visiting Mary Valley beauty spots.

With plenty of accomplished cooks in their midst the group decided to hold a cooking competition and invited local MP Peter Wellington and his wife Jenny to judge a delicious array of food and join them for morning tea. “The morning tea was great but It was a dreadful task trying to judge the fabulous food on offer,” Peter said. “I tasted everything and it was all so delicious I passed it over to Jenny to make the final decision.” A mouth-watering almond and lemon gluten free cake made by Ruth Preston of Maroochydore won the coveted first prize and runner up went to West Australia’s Beth Nolan for her savoury pikelets. Peter thanked Club President Cec Ward for choosing Kenilworth for the rally and said he had enjoyed meeting the visitors and hearing their often hilarious travel experiences. “Thank you for coming and pass the message through your organisation about this beautiful part of the country,” he said.

MILKING MACHINES AT MOUNT UBI A few miles from Kenilworth on the road to the Blackall, Mount Ubi farm was reached, a nice bit of country of 3000 acres owned by Senator Walker. It is being worked as a dairy farm by Mr. J.C. Hassall on the share system and if outward and visible signs are any indication of prosperity, Mr. Hassall if doing very well. There are haystacks in the yard, the barns are full of corn, the milking sheds are well arranged, and the homestead is commodious and comfortable looking. Mr. Hassall is a progressive farmer, and has two milking machines installed. He is highly satisfied with them. The engine which drives the vacuum pump, also serves for chaff-cutting, wood-sawing, and other purposes. Mr. Hassall took a number of prizes at Maroochy Show for hackneys and dairy stock. ENILWORTH Two miles from Yahoo Creek is Kenilworth station, which is well known from the horses that have been bred on it. It was here where The Nun, the dam of Araxes Boreas II, Crough Patrick and other well-known racehorses lived and died. There are a dozen or so Little Bernie colts running around the paddocks now and forty brood mares are kept. The station side is Firearms by Martini-Henry and the draught stallion Gipsy King and the poly stallion Silver King are also kept. Mr. D. Beattie has been manager for fourteen years and is very proud of his horse stock. The writer saw one bad one and he saw it through prejudiced eyes, for it was a packhorse and he had to assist in getting it through the Obi Obi country. A packhorse is always a nuisance. Kenilworth is really a cattle station with 120,000 acres of freehold and occupation lands spread out for twenty-five or thirty miles. The homestead is picturesquely situated on a little plateau overlooking the Mary River, and surrounded by fine flats. Before the drought the station carried 3000 cattle, but now there are

You may even find some Christmas presents. There will be a lucky door prize as well as other lucky draws. Come along and join the fun.

MVI will employ a part-time project coordinator for six months to professionally promote the Mary Valley through an inaugural branding campaign “Mary Valley Country – come out to play”. This would help bring people to the valley, supporting both economic and community development which would drive much-needed prosperity and sustainable community renewal.

For more information contact Kathy Worth 5484 3493 or Diane Cleary 5484 3057.

The coordinator would develop internet marketing and packaging and bundling options for the valley, oversee the development of a promotional web site as well as coordinating training workshops to businesses and volunteers to allow them to benefit from the internet branding campaign. Minister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Economies Tim Mulherin said the funding was from the third round of grants under the $2 million Building Rural Communities Fund. “Under the plan, funding of up to $10,000 is available to organisations for projects that improve the economic, social and cultural capacity of their regions,” Mr Mulherin said. “To date 101 rural projects have received funding under the initiative with a further 52 projects receiving funding in this round. “We want to help rural and regional communities become places that people want to live, work and raise families and these grants are part of a plan to help make that happen,” he said. Mr Mulherin said some of the other successful applications included: • Develop an interactive heritage trails

he Mary Valley Stags presentation night was held on Saturday 1 October. With a great roll up of players, sponsors, executive and supporters a great night of fun, food and entertainment was enjoyed by all at the Imbil Bowls Club. All the players received their jerseys and a team photo before a speech presented by their coach Chad Parker thanking all the boys for their input for the year. He also congratulated them on reaching the Grand Final in only their second year of competition and informed them that next year they will be striving for a step more for a win in the Grand Final. Chad also put to the boys that we all have something very special within the Stags team that is not often found in any other team and that something comes from the heart. They play for each other and they play for the Valley, they are mates and this is their team.

MARY VALLEY

Y

HOW YOU CAN HELP THE Mary River festival

es it is fast approaching for another fun filled Mary River Festival, with the first part happening on Saturday 22 October with the Family River Fun Day. I hope you all have it in your calendar as a date claimer. Saturday 12 November will be the Festival day. Serge and his solar powered laser show will be at both events as it was such an awesome addition to finish off with. (and much kinder than fireworks!) The Mary River Festival is an opportunity for a playful celebration of the unique environment and vibrant communities that exists along the Mary River. Our mission is to increase the awareness of the unique Mary River environment through recreation and celebration. We are committed to empowering the communities along the Mary River by showcasing local creativity, projects, ideas, resources, culture that enhance and protect the unique environment of the Mary River catchment, while featuring workshops and exhibits, entertainment and children’s activities in a festival atmosphere. We strive to Inform, Entertain and Inspire. If you wish to have a stall at the Festival at Kandanga Recreational Grounds on Saturday 12 November you can obtain the stall Information Package from the website http://www.maryriverfestival.org.au or contact Joolie Gibbs on 5481 0732.

“Four neighbours are within 500m radius of the proposed site.” “Combined with a road frontage requiring a buffer of 200m, side and rear boundary buffers of 20m required, a recommended wetland buffer of 200m from Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) means there is virtually no land left for a piggery. It should be located on a bigger block.“ Mary Valley residents through their Local Member David Gibson are requesting the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Economies to explain and justify this reversal of decision. The final say on this piggery development rests with Gympie Regional Council. Residents have provided submissions, petitions and presented information to the Planning Committee against the piggery application. The residents are urging council to administer the Gympie Regional Planning Scheme Codes to protect the environment, waterways and homes from a development that clearly is not appropiate even for a 133 SPU piggery. “Kandanga Township and other land holders along the creek draw their water from Kandanga Creek which will be at a very high risk of becoming polluted from pig excrement. As well we have Mary River cod and Australian lungfish in this stretch of Kandanga creek to protect.” “Suggestions that pigs can be rotated around steep, highly erodible paddocks and crops/pasture grown to take up all the excrement on such a small area without even an irrigation licence is not practical,” she said. “We urge the Gympie Regional Council to stick to the council’s code for intensive animal development separation distances from neighbours/community areas and use the state Farm Management Systems (FMS) guidelines for managing wetlands in intensive agriculture to reject this proposal.” Lizette Phillips

DEEDI Decision against a Piggery at Kandanga reversed

ympie Regional Council (GRC) has received advice from Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) reversing their decision made in June 2011 on a piggery application at Sterling Road, Kandanga and now giving approval with conditions.

“Neither the letter nor the attached conditions address the original reasons that were relied upon to indicate that the development did not comply with the Environmental Code of Practice for Queensland Piggeries policy”

WE HAVE THE LOT!

jgMVV_1JUNE-2011

The applicant had applied to GRC and DEEDI for a 400 Standard Pig Unit (SPU) piggery on the site. DEEDI has now given approval for a 133 SPU piggery on the same site, paddocks in the same location with same soil and slope and proximity to waterways. Lizette Phillips, a resident representing the local community said “Residents are particulary concerned despite the reduction in numbers, nothing else has changed. It has the same risk of surface and groundwater contamination of Kandanga Creek and Mitchell Creek and for affecting downstream users of the water.”

The following Friday I opened Kenilworth Celebrates Art Competition which again was a fantastic success. Congratulations to President Jean Sandell, Rod and Viv Bloomer, Margaret and Tony White, Kate Baker, Kathleen Mullins, Denis James and the rest of the hardworking team. I spoke to Rod Bloomer and he told me that he was so tired he fell walking up the stairs but he was still laughing. Jenny and I joined the sponsors at St John Bosco for drinks and enjoyed Kathleen Cashin’s beautiful exhibits. Congratulations also to local artist Pam Black who picked up the major art prize. Saturday night I was called out for fire duty with the Belli Bush Fire Brigade and we headed off to a call out at Bourumba Dam. One thing I will say it was “damn” freezing and we got home at 2am on Sunday morning. Let’s hope we get some rain before the fire season really gets underway. On Sunday 25 September Jenny and I enjoyed a pleasant walk with a large group including Editor of the MVV Laetitia, through Mapleton for the Carmel Farrow Ovarian Cancer Research. It was great to see dear friend Ken Farrow looking much better and hoping to throw away his walking frame soon. Don’t forget to clear rubbish from around the house and garden with the onset of the fire season.

I caught up with Clint Murtagh for a chat about the cattle market and watched enviously as the axemen made short work of the pile of massive logs. Jenny enjoyed the show jumping while I wandered over to the rodeo to see some of the action. Met some old school mates from Kenilworth Primary manning the handicraft section. Bought Jenny the little red “Dammitt” duck so that she has something to bash when she gets cross (just kidding). Lorelie Tulk said she had difficulty judging the floral displays with so much to choose from and the cakes looked delicious. Congratulations once again to the Kenilworth Show committee and workers.

OUR COMMUNITY THE MUSIC IS THE RYTHM

R

hythm Culture takes you on an exciting journey through rhythm, movement and sound. We provide unique courses in which the students participate in the entire ensemble, learning all aspects including djembe, dundun, song, and culture. We offer classes, school programs, corporate, disability and youth workshops, a wide range of West African instruments, private tuition and Hip Hop culture for all ages. Originally from Melbourne, Rhythm Culture is now commencing its high standard workshops and classes in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Rhythm Culture’s Nathaniel Combs was born in a tiny town called Waikiri in the South Island of New Zealand. At seven years of age Nathaniel began playing percussion, starting out on drum kit and then moving to West African music after being inspired by Apizo Bangoura. Since 2002 Nathaniel has been living in Melbourne, Australia. Under the tuition of several teachers he became deeply inspired by West African music. He developed strong friends through rhythm, most notable with Nick Ralph and Simon Lewis who’s equalled passion and love for playing has interwoven their lives as much as the rhythms they play.

These included King Marong and Lamine Sonko from One Africa and Afro Mandiko, Aliou Sylla and Mohmmed Camara from Muhanamwé, Neda Ramani from Tumbarumba, Salvadore Persico from Blue King Brown, Barawato with Ousmann Sonko, Wassawumba with Mitzi Mcrae and Simon Lewis, Boubacar Gaye, Mady Keita, Seydou Sow, Nick Rowe Band, Nathan Kaye, Pataphysics, Combo La Revelacion, Morph Music and Le Phat! Since then, Nathaniel has been teaching and facilitating drumming workshops nationally and internationally, performing at major festivals such as the Woodford Folk Festival and actively playing music for local communities in performance groups such as Wongai and Wassawumba. Nathaniel is now currently running workshops and African drumming classes in several locations throughout the Hinterland. Visit www.rhythmculture.com.au for more info on workshops, classes, performances, drum sales and community jams. See advertisement bottom right of the page.

he electric urn from the Gheerulla Hall has gone missing - could the borrower please return it ASAP. Contact Blair Meldrum 5472 3090 to arrange delivery.

In 2004 Nathaniel travelled to Conakry, Guinee in West Africa. There, he played with world famous ensembles like Les Percussion de Guinea, Les Visage de Guinee, and the prestigious Kaloum Lole. After six months and as many splits and blisters, Nathaniel was dreaming, walking and living rhythm! Returning from Africa, Nathaniel completed a masters class with Mamady Keita and became actively involved with a number of artists and their groups both traditional and contemporary.
