ock fetish. When veterinarians operated on an ailing Great Dane they removed 43-1/2 socks from its stomach. The three-year-old canine had apparently been also eating them whole.

Going for a spin. A five year-old girl was hospitalised after she was trapped in a laundromat washing machine for several minutes and spun at high speeds. The girl had extensive injuries but was expected to survive the incident. It is not known how she was trapped in the machine. “She was tumbling pretty fast in there,” a police spokesman said. I bet she was. A woolly jumper? Shaun the Sheep, found wandering near Oatlands in Tasmania, had an estimated 25 kg (55 lb) coat, and if confirmed could shatter the world record currently held by a New Zealand sheep called Shrek. The six-year-old merino sheep had likely never been shorn in his life. Black is black. Native to Indonesia, are completely black from comb to talon. Amazingly their feathers, eyes, beak, tongue, bones, meat and organs are all jet black. But like all rare and beautiful things these chickens come with a price tag of $2500.

KENILWORTH FIRST RESPONSE

he Kenilworth First Responders would like to publicly say a huge thanks to our outgoing President for this year, Linda Green. Linda is one of the founding members of Kenilworth First Response and has guided our group over many years and always puts her heart and soul into looking after the community. As a Health Care Professional Linda has been a tremendous source of knowledge for our First Responders and this knowledge and experience has benefited so many people. Very unselfishly, Linda regularly rosters herself on and fills in those days of our monthly rosters when no one is available, quite often this is after finishing a shift where she works. Thank you Linda, you are very much appreciated by all! Children’s swings are for children. A 15 year old teenager had to be rescued by fire crews after he got stuck in a child’s swing - for three hours - after squeezing his legs into the tiny seat. It took rescue crews 30 minutes to dismantle the swing before the embarrassed lad was finally able to go home. Modern technology. One in three car thefts in London is now carried out by hackers, who use computer malware to take over security systems and issue remote commands for them to unlock and fire up. Sophisticated devices that unscramble key fob data allow crooks to break into cars and then programme new electronic keys to use to drive them away within ten seconds.

Kenilworth’s First Show

istoric Note:- The 1918 show was the impetus the community needed to form a Show Society, staging their first “official” show under the auspices of the P.A.H.& I. Society in 1919 and join with likeminded organisations to stage regular show events across the region. The Chronicle (8.12.1918, p 4) Saturday last turned out a beautiful day for what has now come to be regarded as Kenilworth’s first “show”. From an early hour the usual rendez-vous, Sharry’s paddock was a hive of industry. The committee has gone to a deal of trouble lately in preparing track, hurdles, etc, for the various events, and were early on the spot giving the final touches. Visitors began to arrive early, and before the day closed, upwards of 300 paid admission to the grounds. As all children of school age and under went free, it is safe to say that the attendance numbered over 500. Many of the visitors availing themselves of the dry roads came long distances, from Imbil on the one side to as far as Kilcoy on the other. As the proceeds were to go in aid of the “Wounded Soldiers Comforts’ Fund” all help was voluntary, and it is estimated that the profits will roughly speaking reach about £65 to £70. A fruit and soft drink stall, under the supervision of Mrs and Miss Hassall did a roaring trade, helping to swell the funds considerably, and although well stocked in the morning, was denuded of the last bottle of “pop” before night. The exhibits in what may be termed the “pavilion”, which latter was constructed of saplings and tarpaulins, although few in number, were made up for their excellence, and besides exhibits for the prize schedule, there were also a number of non-competitive exhibits. The judges in the different sections were: Horses - Mr Faircloth of Imbil; Farm section - Mr Peter Sutton; Bread and pastry - Mrs. T. Rodwell Snr of Brooloo. The prize winners were as follow: FARM SECTION. Oaten chaff - A. McGinn 1, J.C. Hassall 2; Wheaten chaff - E. Pickering 1, J. McGinn 2; Lucerne chaff - R. Sims 1, E. Pickering 2; Mixed chaff - R. Sims 1, E. Pickering 2; Lucerne Hay - R. Sims 1, E. Pickering 2; Best bushel maize - A. McGinn 1, J. McGinn 2; Best bunch of bananas - F. Pearce 1, G. Sutton 2; Special prizes donated by W. Purdon Esq 1 cwt potatoes 10/- D. England 1, A. McGinn 2; Best collection of vegetables 10/- donated by J.C. Hassall Esq Mrs. T. White 1, Mrs Hassall 2; Best collection of bread 10/6 donated by Mrsd J.C. Hassall Mrs. F. Pearce 1, Mrs R. Sims 2. Fruit cake made by a girl under 17 years Eva Pickering 1, L. et weather in our zone in August led to a number of event cancellations. While many welcomed the much needed rain, we acknowledge the many hours spent by local clubs organising their events to then have to cancel them. Maleny Gymkhana was cancelled on Sunday 17 August due to the wet weather. The following week, the Caloundra Showjumping and Jumping Equitation weekend (23-24 August) was cancelled due to the grounds being too wet. Our KPC Muster was held on Saturday 30 August. Lessons were theory, flatwork and jumping and some sporting as well. For those competing at the upcoming state championships, Melissa gave advice on presentation, rider class and hack class. Zone 6 September Certificate School Camp is coming up during the school holidays at Nambour Showgrounds from 30 September to 3 October, with testing on Saturday 4 October. It is an opportunity for riders to gain certificate qualifications in riding proficiency and horse care.

MARY VALLEY MV COUNTRY HARVEST CO-OP AGM

M

ary Valley Country Harvest Co-operative invites you to its Annual General Meeting on October 2 at Kandanga Hall from 6pm. There will naturally be a supper celebrating the fantastic range of local, seasonal food available. The group acknowledges its first year with the launch of a Seasonal Guide for both growers and consumers informing when its best to plant or buy products grown right here in the Mary Valley. A program of production planting is under way combining new growers and the more seasoned to increase supply for families in the region. The idea is to spread the risk by having a number of growers to supply each crop. This encourages growers to diversify and therefore support a variety of incomes rather then relying on a single crop or market. The Harvest Summer School will also be offered again in 2015 offering new and existing small acreage farmers the opportunity to upskill, network and improve their opportunities to stay on the land and provide their own income. Becoming a member of the co-operative offers many benefits, from sharing bulk buys to offering increased sales opportunities. Come along to share ideas. Please RSVP for catering on 0459 225 399.

New course, new challenges for Brownwater Classic

C

elebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary, this year’s Brownwater Classic at Moy Pocket saw a lively contest over a new course. At stake was the extremely prestigious and highly coveted Numabulla Cup (gold on plywood) as well as a host of other trophies for the race itself and the rock-skipping contests that follow. Boats were crafted on-site from blackbean pods with an ingenious array of design and decorative modifications. The shorter course saw a close finish with one of the early leaders coming to premature demise on an in-course snag. The finish was so close that a camera would have proven useful as the Commodore had some confusion with the craft finishing thick and fast. A kayak proved useful in retrieving boats as they finished but even then, some managed to slip through.

Line honours, and the novice trophy were awarded to young Emma Douw with Ruby Weaver-Burns runner-up. Winner of the veterans section was Silvi Eckley, the mother of last year’s winner, with Gen Douw, mother of this year’s winner in second place. The Ross Freiberg Award for the best design went to young Eban Weaver-Wampl with Thomas Lindenau second. Ilona Demecs won the best-named boat category with “Thistle Whistle” with Shane Litherland’s “Sub-terfuge” runner-up. Judges expressed some surprise that no-one had the optimism to call their boat “Thistle Win”, given the abundance of thistles on the way to the starting line. The rock-skipping contest is always hotly contested and this year was no exception. While no one managed to better the world record of 51 skips, spectators were treated to some fine throws. In the 7 years and under Section, young Max Johnson produced a good throw to place him just ahead of Alex McAndrew. The 14 years and under section took a number of throws before winners began to emerge from the pack. The rules of the rock skip are not unlike the Olympic Games with the best group from each round progressing to the next. This always presents contestants with a dilemma as to whether to use their best rocks early or keep them for towards the end. In the Open Women’s section, winner Casey Rowe throw some excellent skips and, when her father, many times champion Alan Franks won the Open Men’s event, gave some credibility to the notion that rock-skipping ability may have some genetic basis. Second in the Woman’s section was young Echo Demecs while R. Shearer was impressive as runner-up in the Men’s. A special feature of this year’s event, and to celebrate its the twenty-fifth anniversary, was the first public sighting of Shane Litherland’s wonderful replica of the old timber Pickering Bridge, unfortunately demolished late last year. The Commodore and members of the Moy Pocket Yacht Club would like to thank all who attended at the new venue and took part in the afternoon of light-hearted competition. To mark World Rivers Day on Saturday September 27, a river care day will be held at the same venue (see article p11) but the focus will be not on competition, but on tree-planting, encouraging natural regeneration and removing Cat’s Claw Creeper from young trees. Kenilworth Poets’ Breakfast

oets and yarn spinners are gearing up to head for Kenilworth for the annual Poets’ Breakfast on Saturday October 4. These popular breakfasts have delighted audiences for well over a decade and invariably attract both poets and audiences from far and wide. Organised by the Conondale Range Conservation Association as its annual fundraiser, and hosted by popular local poet Ian Mackay, the breakfasts have become an integral part of the Kenilworth Celebrates! festival. Poets like Harry Donnelly, Irish Joe Lynch, Robin (Archie) Archbold and Mark Feldman never fail to please the crowd and this year they’ll be joined by a host of others. While there are a number of invited performers, there’s always room for “walk ups” in an open mike section of the program.

They say that laughter is the best medicine and a Poets’ Breakfast is guaranteed to give you a really good dose. The only catch is that you can’t claim the entry fee on Medicare. Following the Breakfast, there’s ample time to visit the impressive art display, the centrepiece of the Kenilworth Celebrates! Festival, in the nearby hall, or to take in the market. For many, the option of camping in the showgrounds and simply strolling over to the Breakfast in the morning, has become an attractive proposition. Phone 5446 0131 for camping details. For enquiries about the Breakfast phone Ian on 5446 0124.

The breakfast starts at 8am (and goes till around 12) in the woodchop arena behind the Kenilworth hall. Entry is $5 for the entertainment and, as always, there’ll be a variety of breakfasts on offer. There’s no need to pre-book.

AUGUST 2014 KENILWORTH Kenilworth received 87mm of rain during August 2014 which fell on 11 days. Report kindly submitted by Michael Pfeiffer

MARY VALLEY

W

World Rivers Day

orld Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways. It highlights the many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world. People in more than 60 countries participate in World Rivers Day, generally held on the last Sunday in September. On the Mary, which approaches the fifth anniversary of Peter Garrett’s Remembrance Day reprieve, there’ll be two celebrations. There’ll be one on Saturday 27 September at Moy Pocket near Kenilworth and one on Sunday 28, near Tiaro, much closer to the river’s mouth. The Mary River is just over three hundred kilometres long with several thousand kilometres of tributaries included in its catchment. For over two decades the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee, MRCCC, has worked to foster better stewardship of not just the river and its riparian vegetation but of the whole of the catchment. The Moy Pocket rivercare day will be held just to the north of Pickering bridge and will include a riparian walk as well as tree-planting, natural regeneration and some freeing of young trees engulfed by Cat’s Claw Creeper. The property is part of the Connection Road Corridor which links the biodiverse Conservation Park on top of the Kenilworth Bluff with the Mary River. The day starts at 10am and goes till mid-afternoon. Bring your own picnic lunch, a chair, hat and secateurs. Look for the entry signs just to the north of Pickering bridge. For more details phone Ian on 5446 0124. For details on the Tiaro day, visit http://mrccc.org.au Ian Mackay

$5000 to aid threatened species in Gympie

T

he Queensland Government has provided $5000 to Griffith University to support an important research project to help protect and recover threatened species.

The funding will assist researchers in their work to determine the breeding requirements and survival of Mary River cod populations. Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said the grant was made under a Research Partnerships Program.

Dr Mark Kennard from the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University said the grant would greatly assist the university’s important work on the Mary River. “Mary River Cod populations are thought to be under threat because of limited breeding,” he said. “This study will fill critical knowledge gaps about the factors that influence successful breeding and survival of Mary River Cod throughout south-east Queensland and use genetic techniques to determine the number of breeding fish contributing to cod populations across a range of sites and times. “Among other things, the results will assist population recovery by identifying sites where the fish breed most prolifically and quantifying the habitat and flow conditions that sustain healthy cod populations,” Dr Kennard said. The research will be conducted at Tinana Creek, Six Mile Creek and Obi Obi Creek. These tributaries support relatively healthy Mary River cod populations and so represent likely areas for spawning and presence of larvae. Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell said Queensland was one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth with more than 1500 species of plants and animals listed as threatened under state and federal legislation. “Fortunately, we have a range of stakeholders including government, research institutions, traditional owners and community groups working for our threatened species,” Mr Powell said. “Essential to these recovery efforts is sound scientifically based environmental research and policy development based on the best science – and this is where the Research Partnerships Program will deliver many benefits. “This initial round of grants sees $60,000 supporting University of Queensland, Griffith University, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland University of Technology and James Cook University with projects to help protect and recover some of the state’s threatened species,” he said. “By formalising partnerships with others that seek the same outcomes and providing funding to assist their research, we can ensure our efforts are focussed, aligned, and deliver the best possible results.”

OUR COMMUNITY

O

Life Chats …

ne can always learn new things. Recently at a friend’s farewell lunch date I found out about two fascinating words I had never heard of before. TJ, George and I were all deep in round table conversation about home life and how “things” don’t appear to last how they used to i.e. fridges, dishwashers, televisions, cars etc. George pipes up and delivers information of foreign knowledge to both TJ and I. It’s called “Planned Obsolescence” he stated. I am like, “Say that again”. “Planned Obsolescence” he repeats. Readers, I am about to deliver amazing intelligence that maybe you, like me, was totally unaware of. Manufacturers snuck, “planned obsolescence”, in our modern day life and no one bothered to inform consumers. In industrial design, it is a policy to plan or design a product with an artificially limited life, so it will become obsolete, that is, unfashionable or no longer functional after a certain period of time. Rationale behind this strategy is to generate long-term sales volume by reducing the time between repeat purchases. How many of you know the experience when purchasing white goods, merchandisers advise a warranty period and the so purchased item dies just after the particular date given? Am I mad about that info? Am I concerned about that info? Yes sir re. Anything I can do about it? Nothing likely. Society has evolved into the “throw away” mentality. Sending our non-working goods to service repair men has become an outdated thing of the past. The cost of getting the goods there, the upfront “have a look at it price”, the then quoted price to fix has become not worth all the effort and money. Often times, you are advised, “It is easier to throw out the old and purchase new”. Maybe on your next purchase, consider George’s information. Ask the retailer “What’s the Planned Obsolescence timeframe for this product?” Await a response. It may well be to your ultimate consumer advantage. MM of Obi “We have an opportunity for everyone in the world to have access to all the world’s information. This has never before been possible. Why is ubiquitous information so profound?

Calling all young geeks for holiday fun

nly children willing to have awesome fun need apply when Sunshine Coast Libraries celebrate all things ‘geekish’ during these school holidays. Community Program Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council’s libraries had come to the rescue of every parent on the coast with a huge range of activities to entertain children during the September and October holidays. “Our libraries are well renowned for their extensive holiday program,” Cr McKay said. “These holidays we have everything from popular Minecraft paper craft to paper engineering. Argentinian paper engineer, Gus Santome has created a very special 3D Sunshine Coast Library paper troll and we will be running sessions for children to build their own as well as creating Superman, Ironman, Naruto and other famous Disney characters. “Local author and cartoonist Dave Hackett will be running three workshops teaching children how to create their own goofy superheroes. “There are science experiments, timed Lego challenges and for those truly mad scientists a number of Frankentoy sessions where you can create totally new characters from dismembered toys. “And of course in keeping with the theme, Sunshine Coast Libraries will build a pop up library at the Epic Diem Nerd Culture Expo at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, September 27 with special guest fantasy writer, Isobelle Carmody. “There is certainly something for children of all ages but I urge people to book early to avoid disappointment as the holiday activities are very popular.” Make sure you head to Council’s library http://library. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=kids-hasep-oct to book and for more details. he Mary Valley received wonderful news recently with the State Government making a commitment to funding the MV Rattler Train to resume services out to the Mary Valley with short term funding to make it to Amamoor and long term to make it all the way back to Imbil. Mary Valley Blue Light Disco group is holding a dress up Halloween Movie and sausage sizzle night at the Kandanga Hall on Friday 31 October at 6pm. In recent years Kandanga has been impacted by the effects of flooding. While flooding is a concern there are other potential risks. It is important for the community to work together during an emergency, particularly when isolated. To assist with this Gympie Regional Council is working with residents to establish the Kandanga Community Local Disaster Management sub group. There will be a workshop session at the Kandanga Public Hall on Tues 21 Oct from 6pm. Supper will be provided on the night. For registration: peter.mann@gympie.qld.gov.au Valley Bees are holding an Open Day on Sun 12 Oct from 10am to 4pm. The open day will be held at the Kandanga Public Hall so come along to find out all you can about bees and why they are so very important to our lives.

enilworth Celebrates! event… Kenilworth is a terrific town any time of the year and especially during the annual Kenilworth Celebrates! Festival. This year’s event will be held on October 4-5 and includes arts and craft exhibitions and demonstrations, dancing, music, street entertainment and loads of fun activities for kids. Can’t wait! Let’s all get behind this year’s festival to make it bigger and better than ever. Grants reward great work Council recently endorsed a new Environment Levy Partnerships Program at its Ordinary Meeting that will deliver more than half a million dollars to 24 environmentally focussed community groups. Congratulations to Yandina Community Gardens Inc that will receive $11,600 for the next three years to fund its efforts with Living Smart Communities. Congratulations also to the Mapleton Bowls Club, Sunshine Coast Archery Club, Mapleton Community Library, Kenilworth Arts Council Inc, Kenilworth and District Historical Association and the Kenilworth and District Chamber of Commerce that were among the 70 not-forprofit organisations to receive a grant to help meet their operational expenses this financial year.

The Gympie Region Economic Development Strategy 2014 - 2019 was adopted by Council in August. Mayor Ron Dyne states, “The time is right for the Gympie region to benefit from considerable growth and prosperity given it is perfectly placed to deliver a sustainable local economy.” Our regional industry and business base is a significant strength in helping established businesses grow and develop in a fundamental focus on the strategy. Six ‘game changers’ as the key projects to be pursued are: actively lobby for the Bruce Highway upgrade • progress implementation of the MV Economic Development Strategy • flood mitigation for business and industry • progress the development of the Rainbow Beach Masterplan • develop a strategic partnership with regional education providers • market the Gympie region as an industry hub for both emerging and established industries.

Calling on the community to please help council reach the goal of making 5000 poppies as a tribute of respect and remembrance to mark 100 years since Australian troops landed at Gallipoli. Residents can help us to achieve this through attending a range of workshops across the Coast and create a poppy which will be displayed at local Remembrance Day celebrations this year. You can also ask at your local library for details about poppy making workshops or packs to make your own. For more details drop into Councils Kenilworth Library, call 1300 LIBRARY or visit http://www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au See you round the valley soon, Rogo.
