CONCEPT STATEMENT Rhimes Memorial Hospital, located in Seattle, Washington, is designed to achieve exceptional patient centered care. Patient rooms are a main component in patient experience. The rooms are environmentally responsible, technologically relevant and aesthetically refreshing. Right-sizing and ecofriendly materials promote sustainable design. Advanced technology reduces the use of paper, replacing charts with iPads. The iPads and the interactive digital wall also provide entertainment for patients and their families. They invite patients to take control of their room with lighting controls, meal delivery, and digital wallpaper design. Regardless of the image displayed on the screen, patient rooms use warm materials that make the space less sterile and cold. The blue and green hues stimulate relaxation and healing while wood features create a comfortable environment. Overall the rooms change the entire patient experience, improving satisfaction and successfully implementing patient centered care.

What is patient-centered care? ➢ Patient-centered care ensures that decisions made about planning, delivery, and evaluation of healthcare are all made with the patient in mind so that both the patient and the healthcare staff mutually benefit. When successfully implemented it has been proven to improve the quality of care, safety and overall satisfaction. A popular application is the concierge approach, where staff provides customer service tasks and the hospital provides various amenities. No matter the approach, the key is to recognize current lags in patient comfort and analyze the roles that staff plays regarding that comfort.

➢ There are many things that can disrupt a patient’s comfort while staying in a hospital, some of which can be avoided by redesigning a few things. Sleeping is often hard in a hospital because of noisy machinery, bright lights, lack of privacy, and uncomfortable beds. Other things that have been known to bother patients include scheduled eating times, lack of daylighting, and poor acoustics. Colors like green, blue and orange are used to calm and sooth patients. Studies show that smaller patient rooms are more sustainable and more satisfactory. ➢ It has also been proven that patients with family members that room-in with them tend to have faster healing time; therefore the patient’s family must be comfortable as well. Lounge chairs are being replaced with murphy beds, rooms include separate entertainment and lighting is zoned more effectively.
Staff Efficency ➢ Great customer service is only delivered by a happy, healthy staff. Hospitals are taking special consideration in the efficiency of the paths that nurses and doctors take. Daylighting is also being increased for improved alertness, mood and performance. In some cases, staff is given a script to improve communication and change the negative perception of apathetic caregivers.
