Artist Statement

Eleutheromania (n.) An intense and irresistable desire for freedom. This art exhibit expresses freedom through the medium of mixed media collage. A selftaught artist, I pay extreme attention to details. The quest for freedom has many forms as shown in this collection of art. By combining cloth, metal, glass, paper, cement, wood, among other materials, the narrative becomes a visual story. The connective element is the journey and deep desire to not be labeled, or boxed in any specific form. Throughout history, up to our present day, people are fighting for their individual freedom. Elusive as it can be, the desire to be free cannot be contained by the dictates or constraints of society. In seeking freedom we break through whatever binds us. Physically, mentally and spiritually, we were not created to be restricted beings, we were meant to fly. Phoenix Rising is an undiluted desire for freedom. It joins concrete to feathers, cloth to paint to tell its story. 146,000 Days/ 400 years depicts the Middle Passage and the unanswered stain of slavery which remains unresolved. The Midwife was born a slave but spent her life bringing babies into the world. I am part of her lineage birthing my babies as art. The dignity of Mrs. Bivens reflects her freedom and the goddess within. Midnight Dance is a slow musical groove on glass that flows unrestricted, shining bright. The images each tell their story in an interactive experience. Here are a few stories of strength, of balance, grace and eleutheromania, the absolute, intense, desire for freedom. May you embrace this artistic expression of removing whatever binds your spirit and learn to fly. Pat Goodman, 2019

Biography Notes ABOUT THE ARTIST: Art is my self-expression that presents itself as music to the eyes. My soul seems to pull bits and pieces from life to tell a story. A colorful piece of silk, pigments, handmade papers, leather, paint, stones, glass, wood, cement . . . it becomes endless. There is very little that I see that cannot blend to tell a story. Then there is the moment of sitting in front of blank canvas. It is in that moment when the personal challenge to trust that which cannot see, but feel. This feeling manifested as art has been a gift. Art is a mothering of newly formed souls on canvas, or glass, or paper or whichever medium I am choosing at the time. It is a blessing and an obsession. Art is a dance, a walk of suspended time. It is purely letting go of everything. My goal is to go into the direction of the heart‌ and try to determine what it is saying to me. The excitement of this process cannot be fully expressed, but is always a joy to share. The world I see is beyond my five senses. Somehow, I am able to give it language through the open doors of my imagination. It is a place where anything and everything is possible. It is art.
