itamin D, the so-called 'sunshine drug', is the most poplar vitamin supplement, according to new research. Vitamin D is used by just over 33% of vitamin users and has overtaken vitamin C in popularity among consumers, say market research analysts Mintel. Their findings also show that calcium and iron supplements are growing in popularity. The trend towards meat reduction diets including both strict vegan diets and the more lenient flexitarian approach is likely boosting usage of iron. With as many as half of meat eaters believing their red meat intake should be limited, it is likely that people are looking to supplements to fill the iron gap left if they are reducing the amount of red meat they eat.

The rise in usage of calcium could also be linked to the growing focus on plant-based foods, both in terms of vegan diets and dairy avoidance. With just three in 10 adults in agreement that fortified foods and drinks are a better source of vitamins and minerals than taking supplements, consumers may well be fee|5

A new study supported by the

World Health Organization and published in The Lancet has found that a higher dietary fiber intake is associated with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. The study found that the more fiber people consumed, the lower the risk of developing a chronic disease, with 25-29g per day showcasing the greatest benefits.

“Higher fiber intake linked to reduced disease risk” Dietitian Hala Shafie says: “This research joins a body of existing research in this area. Most of us know that fiber is good for us, and this is just further confirmation that we really should be eating more of it.” Hala suggests several simple ways to get your recommended fiber intake, such as eating two slices of whole meal toast with one banana, a handful of almonds, or a chili con carne with a 125g serving of wholegrain rice. She says: “Start by making simple swaps. You may want to slowly up your fiber with small steps as a sudden increase may cause a bit of abdominal discomfort.”

The researchers analyzed 11 studies, which were published between 1999 and 2017, and the total sample size involved 433 participants with an average age of 55. The review found that plant-based diets could “significantly improve” factors such as psychological health, quality of life, weight and Hb Alc levels (a person’s average blood sugar levels for the last two to three months). Furthermore, it was discovered that plant-based diets could “potentially improve diabetic neuropathic pain and the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides” in those with type 2 diabetes.

Ditch the Pitch: Ask These 4 Q’s At Your Next Sales Meeting Many years ago I started my first B2B sales job at a consulting firm. We were brand new and the only track record we had was the caliber of our team. During our first major conference, we set out to hold 21 meetings in the span of 48 hours. Of course I created a customized pitch deck for each meeting. Of course I printed a spiral-bound copy for each one. Of course I brought every single one of those presentations back home. The reason why I brought each presentation home is not because our potential clients didn’t want them, but rather that after the first few presentations we ditched the deck altogether - they were flat out wrong. There was no way that we could have possibly guessed what the |8

For entrepreneurs for whom sales is not their comfort zone, it’s OK. Just think of it as a simple conversation, where both people are on equal footing, both seeking to create value together. And the good news is that there are only a few questions you need to know the answers to to evaluate if an opportunity exists, and how a partnership could potentially work.

Q1

Three years from today, what needs to happen for you to feel happy or proud with your success or progress? This question will change the game in how you run your meetings. It is this question that will give you the qualitative, and more importantly, the quantitative information from a prospective partner that you will need in order to assess whether your interests align, and how you can structure a contract going forward. Let’s break this question down: •“Three years from today” – You are thinking long-term and encouraging the partner to think longterm too. Also, you’re a partner from “today” –

FINANCE

• “What needs to happen” – You are forcing the partner to be specific and talk about activities and results. • “Feel happy or proud” – Success is also felt intrinsically. You’re tapping into the partner’s sense of purpose • “Your success or progress” – The success will be theirs and they will have moved the dial. You’re getting them to think critically about the future and quantify it.

Q2

What are your challenges to getting there? With this question, you’ll know exactly what obstacles the partner is facing in order to meet their in- tended success three years from to- day. When you get an answer to this question, again, make sure that the challenges are measurable and quantifiable. More importantly, make sure that they are not macro and are specific to the organization.

Pro tip: the answer

that you get to this question will effectively be the “top customer challenges” portion of your presentation.

SALES

You will spoon- feed them back to your partner. They will be the cornerstone of the value that you deliver. They will be the three top features that you showcase during your product demo. All with literally zero guesswork.

Q3

What are your biggest opportunities or what are you most excited about? The question about opportunities is centered around what are they most excited about. This allows you to see if there’s something that your partnership can leverage. For in- stance, if your potential partner is excited about the launch of a new initiative, you can ascertain if this is something that could either help the partnership because you can piggyback on it, or possibly hurt your timing because their focus will be elsewhere. Or they are excited about a new regulatory initiative that gives you wind for your sails. Or maybe they are excited about a conference that they are hosting, so maybe you can announce your partnership there!

Q4 What are your

biggest strengths, or

This is a feel-good question that allows the potential partner to brag. They can talk about the strength of their team, their brand, or their procurement process, literally anything. Ending your discovery questions on this note allows you to see your partner for who they truly are – it’s not just about the obstacles and the challenges. But rather about making your partner feel great about where they are today and how much more you can do together.

Lasting Impact

Though there is a lot of

skill involved in the sales process, in healthcare, particularly when you are just starting out, you’re building heroes, champions and partners. Remember that you are on equal footing and therefore have a choice in who you partner with. You have the freedom to decide if the relationship will get you closer to your MAS

The questions above make up a tool we call the Value Creation Discovery Filter, which allows you to be seen as a leader and a partner to anyone you do business with. As an added bonus, because of the alignment, you will be transforming your potential partners into heroes within their own organization. If you approach your conversations from a Value Creator Mindset, you’ll be able to generate relation- ships that might not sign with you tomorrow, but when they close,

they will stick because you’re aligned with the strategic goals of the partner and you created champions along the way. They will grow with you, and together, you can collectively achieve your health goal.

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER USE MAKEUP TESTERS IN SHOPS

M icrobiologists have discovered that using free make-up samples in shops could spread harmful diseases and contagion like herpes and salmonella. In a report published by The Daily Mail it is understood that make-up testers often available in department stores, beauticians or chemists are not good for the skin. Lipstick used by multiple people can carry droplets of saliva, which is known to carry the herpes virus. Eyeliners and mascara have also been found to cause the sensation known as “pink- eye whereas other products could carry salmonella or e. coli. Furthermore, make-up brushes can also gather nasty bacteria like Staph aureus and streptococcus.

Dr Amreen Bashir of Aston University told the Mail that most people would never consider sharing a toothbrush with a stranger, yet they happily use make-up testers. There is a real risk of catching bacterial infections and herpes as we all have different organisms living on us. One cosmetic tester can be used by 30 or 40 different people, which spread the risk of infe c t i o n . Yet the problems have come to light recently after an American woman sued a beauty company after she claimed to contract herpes through their products. The Mail claim that a study of 67 cosmetics in 2016 found that three- quarters of these items contained the staphylococcus bug.

it’s to stay away from sharing makeup products, both among your friends and especially in cosmetic stores” The bug can usually live on a persons skin and not cause any harm but by shared make-up could unleash a more deadly version, known commonly as MRSA. This unfortunate news isn’t exclusive to just in-store testers either and can be spread old make-up that has been sitting in a bag for ages. Dr Bashir added, “Studies have revealed that 43 per cent of eyeliners and mascara wands contain contaminants. I know many friends who have been left with a “pink eye” after sharing mascara or using ancient mascara that’s been sitting in their make-up bags. If all of these horror stories tell us one thing.
