Sports SHS senior takes 2nd at girls’ wrestling tourney 10 boys advance to weekend regional By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

Kaitlin Woods advanced further in the wrestling postseason than she ever has. The Shelton senior finished second in the 124-pound weight division at the girls’ sub-regional tournament Saturday at Hoquiam High School. Woods entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in her weight division, earning a

first-round bye. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to regionals Saturday at Hoquiam High School. “In her first match, she came from behind to pin her opponent from Ocosta at the end of the third period,” SHS assistant wrestling coach Chris Frazier said. “She had a very close semifinal match with her opponent from Yelm, winning 8-7.” In the first round, Woods took the lead, but then had to fight off her back in the second round. “In the third, she came from behind to secure a berth to regionals,” Frazier said. Knowing she had qualified

for regionals, Woods entered the finals to face Laura Ditell from Foss. “Kaitlin attacked from the beginning of the match and earned the first takedown,” Frazier said. “Ditell is a very experienced wrestler and fought for a reversal and pinned.” Woods finished sub-regionals in fifth last year to be an alternate for regionals. “Woods was the captain and leader of not only the girls, but the entire team as a whole,” Frazier said. “She has a great opportunity next when she travels back to Hoquiam for the regional tournament.” Ten wrestlers from the Shel-

ton boys’ team also advanced through the sub-regional tournament (held Friday and Saturday at Foss) to the regional tournament. “The team wrestled very well throughout the weekend,” head coach Chris Lacy said. “We did not finish as strong as we needed to and that will be the focus of our training this week.” The Highclimbers took third at the sub-regional tournament. That is the highest the team has finished at a tournament this season. As with the girls’ tournament, the top four wrestlers in each weight division advanced to the regional tour-

nament at Bonney Lake High School. “Many of our wrestlers had their best tournaments of the year,” Lacy said. Four Highclimbers finished in second place: Gil Ramos at 126, Chase Salisbury at 138, Benny Olivas at 145 and Hector Gaspar at 160. Three of the Highclimbers — Caleb Ragsdale at 120, Irvin Garcia at 170 and Colton Paller at 182 — finished in third place. Finally, Rudy Mackiewicz at 170, Jesus Jimenez at 182 and Drake Meacham at 220 took fourth place. See WRESTLING on page B-7

know where the team’s performance came from Friday night. “I thought Klahowya was a team we could play with and make them shoot over the top,” Hawkins said. “Klahowya wants to play uptempo, so we really focused on slowing the ball down and playing our pace.” This strategy worked well for the Lady Bulldogs, who went into halftime leading 23-19. By the end of the third, Klahowya had tied the game at 28 points. Throughout the game, the teams tied the score four times and the lead changed 10 times. But North Mason took control in the fourth quarter and never gave it up. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Klahowya 16-6 in the final eight minutes, and held the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard until the clock read 2 minutes, 16 seconds.

With two more victories under its belt, the Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team will begin the Southwest District IV tournament Monday. As the No. 2 independent team, the Lady Owls earned a bye in the first round of districts with wins against Montesano and Lake Quinault last week. The team will play in the second round at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Castle Rock High School against the winner of the 3 p.m. Saturday game between Oakville and Columbia Adventist. The Lady Owls finished second among the independent schools after winning two close games last week. The team’s first win was a 41-39 victory against the Montesano junior varsity team Feb. 5. “This was a defensive battle throughout the game,” head coach Lance Valley said. “We came out 9-0 in the first three minutes of the game, but then Montesano settled down and we couldn’t get any shots.” With Miranda Sowle in foul trouble throughout the game, Jaycee Valley had to play point guard and did a good job of handling and controlling the defense, coach Valley said. “In the third quarter, we came out very aggressive on defense and that led to an offensive outbreak in the quarter that gave us a little breathing room,” he said. At halftime, Montesano led 20-16. After outscoring Montesano 17-6 in the third quarter, the Lady Owls took a 3326 lead heading into the fourth quarter. “Montesano clawed their way back in the fourth, but Melodie Snyder hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory,” Valley said. Carlie Adsero led the team with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Jaycee Valley had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Lady Bulldogs earn big senior night victory By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

Everything came together for the North Mason girls’ basketball team during its final game of the season. On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Klahowya 44-34 at home on senior night. “We played really good, I’m proud of my team,” said senior Ali Gibson while wiping away tears. “I wish (the team playing well) had started from the beginning, but I’m happy the young girls get so much time to keep playing,” senior Alivia Sandquist said. “They’re a young team and they’ll do well.” Head coach Dave Hawkins said he didn’t

Are Shelton students fair-weather fans?

I

’ve noticed something unfortunate about Shelton High School students. When a team is doing well, such as the 2012 football team, the stadium is packed with fans cheering on the Highclimbers. And when a team is struggling, such as the 2014 girls’ basketball team, the stands are sparsely filled with morose fans making little to no noise. This was especially apparent Feb. 5 during the Lady Highclimbers’ senior night game in the Mini Dome. After the game, head coach Aaron Leth estimated 15 students attended, and he was sad his team wasn’t supported more. “I would like to say ‘thank

you’ to all the parents and fans that came to senior night,” Leth said in an email Feb. 6. “But it would have been nice to By EMILY have more HANSON support from our student body to show their appreciation to our seniors who have worked so hard for the past four years.” All this begs the question: Are Shelton students fairweather fans? Do they not consider how much work goes into practices and games, despite the outcome

of those games? Do they not care that their classmates look up from the bench and have little motivation from the fans to continue playing because few fans attend the games or because the ones that are in attendance are silent? I know the Shelton basketball teams struggled to win games this season. I know it can be difficult to root for a team when there is little hope the team will win. However, even the leastskilled team can surprise you if you give it the opportunity. See SIDELINE on page B-7

All fired up North Mason boys win final games By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

The North Mason boys’ basketball team ended its season on a high note last week. On Feb. 4, the Bulldogs withstood a Kingston fourth-quarter comeback to win 54-49 on senior night. “We came out with fire, played great defense and limited our turnovers,” senior Matt Duckworth said. The Bulldogs outscored Kingston 11-3 in the first quarter. At halftime, North Mason led 23-11. “Holding a team to 11 points in the first half … you don’t expect that,” head coach Steve Hackett said. He said the game could have turned into a blowout if the Bulldogs had made a few more of their layins and free throws. North Mason went 4-for-8 from the freethrow line in the first half. Kingston returned from halftime to go shot-for-shot with the Bulldogs in the third quarter. In the fourth, Kingston outscored North Mason 23-16, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. Duckworth said he wasn’t surprised the game ended so close. “Usually our games go down to the line in the last two minutes,”

Duckworth said. In the final two minutes against Kingston, North Mason went 7-for-10 from the free-throw line. Hackett praised the Bulldogs’ defense against Kingston. “That’s how you put teams away: Free throws and defense,” he added. Duckworth said the excitement of senior night and the supportive crowd helped the Bulldogs come out with the win. “It was great to play my last home game and win it here at North Mason,” he added. Duckworth led the Bulldogs with 15 points, 12 of which came on 3-pointers. Junior Daniel Burggraaf netted 14 points, while sophomore Matt Becker scored 13. Becker went 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. North Mason followed the victory with a 60-47 defeat of Klahowya on Friday. “It was a great ending to the season for us,” Hackett said. “Our goal was to have the team playing its best toward the end of the season and we did that with a great last two weeks.” Duckworth led the Bulldogs with 26 points, while Burggraaf scored 16. Burggraaf also grabbed 20 rebounds. “I just wish we could have turned it on a little earlier so we could have made a playoff push,” Hackett said. “I’m very happy for the seniors to go out with a win and look forward to staying in contact with those guys.” Hackett said he hopes the Bulldogs (6-14) will work hard in the gym in the offseason.

North Mason sophomore Matt Becker drives past a Kingston guard Feb. 4 during the Bulldogs’ senior night home game.

Sean Kealy could say there’s chlorine in his veins. The Shelton senior began swimming at a young age, taught by his mother, a former SHS swimmer. She made it to state her senior year on a relay team. In eighth grade, Kealy began to learn the stroke techniques for competitive swimming. “My mom’s the reason my three older brothers and I all did swimming,” Kealy said. “I like it because it’s not so much a contact sport or a team sport. It’s individual. You’re only trying to beat yourself and maybe the guy next to you.” He said his body type lends itself well to swimming. “I’m a skinnier, scrawny person, but it’s perfect for swimming,” Kealy said. “I’m stronger than I look, though.” He said that when he first started swimming, he earned personal records often. “As you swim more, it happens less, but when it does, it’s a bigger deal,” he added.

Although Kealy’s been swimming his whole life, he said he’s not planning on competing after high school. “I’m planning to join the Army to be a helicopter pilot,” he said. “That’s the way my brothers and dad did it.” He said he’s attracted to the Army because of the travel opportunities. “There’s no other place where you get the chance to travel for free and stay in an area for free while stationed there,” Kealy said. Although he will be joining the military during a time of war, Kealy said he’s not worried about the dangers. “I figure if I die in a helicopter, it’ll be quick,” he said. “It’s something you don’t think about.” Kealy’s second oldest brother inspired his career choice. He said that brother is also in aviation and enjoys it. “I also have good enough scores on the (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for it,” he added. “I can drive a car and have my boater’s license; why not fly?” Being in the military will be a familiar life for Kealy, he said. “I know what I’m doing because my dad retired after 23 years and my brothers went in,” he said. “I’ve known and lived the Army life.”

Program combines skills, entertainment Shelton elementary school students to perform with Harlem Globetrotters By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

The Players in Progress (PIPs) combine basketball ball-handling skills and entertainment to dazzle crowds at halftime shows. And on Monday, 56 PIPs from three schools get to show off their talent during the Harlem Globetrotters’ performance at 2 p.m. at the Key Arena in Seattle. “PIPs is a national program and they asked if we wanted to perform with the Harlem Globetrotters. How could I pass that up?” said Kenn Clark, physical education teacher at Evergreen Elementary School. Clark has coached the program since October, when he started the group in Shelton. The Shelton PIPs group is the only one in Washington. “I’m learning as I’m going,” Clark said. “PIPs uses basketball skills to put on a performance at halftime shows.” He said the program starts with children learning basic ball-handling skills of dribbling and passing, plus doing the figure 8 of moving the ball between the legs. Because the age range for PIPs participants is kindergarten through fifth grade, the trick is modified for skill level. Kindergarteners roll the ball on the floor between their legs, while the older children dribble it. “We throw in a few ex-

Evergreen Elementary School fifth-grader Lainie Wallette, left, and fourth-grader Derek Clark lead the Players in Progress group through practice. tra skills they don’t do during games such as spinning the ball on a finger and the rocking chair maneuver: The ball starts behind them, they bounce it between their legs to the front and then back again,” Clark said. “We’ll be broken into two groups,” Clark said. “One will perform before the game and the other will perform at halftime.”

Clark said he wanted to start the program in Shelton because he’d worked with PIPs in Albuquerque, N.M., before moving to Mason County and the program encourages basketball skills. “If nothing else, it gets the ball into everyone’s hands,” Clark said. “All 60 kids get to use the ball and develop basic skills they’ll need for later on.”

The Shelton PIPs have practiced for 90 minutes every Tuesday since October. Clark is assisted in the practices by Evergreen Elementary School fifth-grader Lainie Wallette and fourth-grader Derek Clark. “These two kids have whistles and control everything,” Clark said. “They blow the whistle and the kids start do-

ing whatever skill they’re supposed to do.” He said he choose the group’s leaders by looking for good behavior and observing who the other children were looking at to follow in early practices. “They were also chosen because they know the routine, are confident and able to lead everyone,” Clark said. When the call to perform with the Harlem Globetrotters, a comedic basketball team that plays exhibition games, came in in November, Clark told the group and their first reaction was: “We’re going to perform in Seattle!” “Then we went through who the Harlem Globetrotters are,” Clark said. “A few knew, but most didn’t.” He said the children are excited about the performance. “We don’t exactly do what the Harlem Globetrotters do, but there’s an element of it in our performances,” he said. “We do some of the stuff they do, but we really focus on the ball-handling skills. It does entertain a bit more, though.” One benefit of being in the PIPs program, Clark said, is that the children are learning that practice and hard work pay off. “They’re realizing if they really work at something, they’ll improve and they’re applying it to their schoolwork,” Clark said. The children are also learning the life lesson that it’s OK to make a mistake, he added. “We focus on life lessons,” Clark said. “We’re teaching the children that we’re going to make mistakes and then move on from them.”

“I don’t think the regional tournament will be as tough for us as it will be for others.” Bill McCarty, NMHS head wrestling coach

Phillips (126 pounds) and senior Victor McIntosh (182 pounds) nabbed third-place finishes. North Mason finished in fourth place with 217 points. “The guys wrestled really tough,” North Mason head coach Bill McCarty said. “Some things didn’t go as we’d hoped, but I am not disappointed at all with my wrestlers.” Hunter squared off against Olympic High School freshman Logan Madison in the sub-regional finals. “The first time they wrestled each other, Grant lost pretty han-

didly,” McCarty said. “The next time was close and the third time was an overtime match.” For their first matchup, Hunter defeated Madison by decision 7-6 to win the championship at 145. “I think this time, Hunter was ahead a bit at the end and he just kept on bringing it. I think (Madison) expected to get a lastminute takedown and Hunter just wasn’t having it.” The top three wrestlers at sub-regionals advance to regionals. “The biggest disappointment was Mor-

gan Grewell because the referee and the clock were off and nobody really knew the real final score,” McCarty said. Grewell, a senior, took fourth at 170 pounds. McCarty said he thinks all six Bulldogs can advance to Mat Classic XXVI, the WIAA State Championship wrestling tournament Feb. 21 and 22 at the Tacoma Dome. “I don’t think the regional tournament will be as tough for us as it will be for others,” McCarty said. “They’re all such quality competitors.”

Shelton girls suffer senior night defeat Lady Highclimbers win physical battle, lose to Lincoln By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

The Shelton girls’ basketball team received high praise after its senior night game last week. “One of the best compliments a coach could have about his team is that (the opponents’ coach) wishes their team could play as physical as us,” head coach Aaron Leth said. “Lincoln’s coach asked me after the game to have a copy of game film so he could review it with his team and show them how they lost the physical battle on the floor.” Despite Shelton losing 5231 Feb. 5 in the Mini Dome, Lincoln’s head coach told Leth he had not seen a team play with more heart than the Lady Highclimbers put forth. The game was an emotional one for the team, particularly the seniors, because it was the final home game of the season. “It being senior night, I had so much fire in me to win and prove we’re good enough,” senior Cheyenne Overlin said. “I think we out-hustled them and put more heart in. They thought they’d destroy us and they didn’t.” Shelton struggled to generate offense in the first half and went into halftime down 42-12. Leth said the Lady Highclimbers’ goal was to hold down Lincoln’s leading scorer, sophomore Tamia Braggs. “Our focus was to keep their big post off of the boards and out of the paint,” Leth said about Braggs, who is 6-foot-1. “Although she was able to get some easy rebounds, we made her night pretty tough. She is the leading scorer in the (3A Narrows League) right now and you have to contain and hold down on her at all times.” Overlin praised junior varsity swing player sophomore Kaitlyn Allen for her performance at post. “(Kaitlyn) handled Lincoln’s post better than any of the se-

niors,” Overlin said. Leth agreed, adding that Allen stepped up to the coaches’ challenge of holding Braggs down. Leth said the Feb. 3 game was an improvement on Shelton’s first meeting with Lincoln, a 67-14 loss Jan. 10 in Tacoma. “The girls played a good game during the final home game of the year,” Leth said. “We set out to improve from the last time we played them. A month ago, we played Lincoln at their house and were beat up pretty bad.” Senior Taylor Stroud led the Lady Highclimbers with eight points, while senior Jordan Leach put up seven. Senior Alyssa York netted six points and Overlin added four. Senior Kassy Slone and junior Jessica Johnson contributed three points each. The loss came two days after Shelton played its best game of the season, losing 4947 at Capital. “I was really proud of how we just wouldn’t give up and a played a great game,” Leth said. Shelton led the first quarter, outscoring Capital 12-10 and then fell behind to go into halftime down 26-23. Capital pulled further ahead with a 13-8 third quarter. “Capital took advantage of a couple of slipups we had on the defensive end in the third quarter, jumping up on us by 10,” Leth said. “We talked between the third and fourth quarters about being patient on offense and making them come out to guard us.” Shelton picked its game up in the fourth to score 14 points. With 51 seconds left in the game, Shelton trailed by eight and had two remaining timeouts. “Lincoln had the ball and we were able to get a steal in the posts,” Leth said. “Cheyenne took it the length of the court and was contested at the rim.” Johnson picked up the rebound and finished the play to bring Shelton within six points with 34 seconds to go. “They played great defense and forced a bad shot,” Leth

Shelton missed tying the game with less than 1 second remaining. Capital sent Stroud to the line, where she made 1-of-2. “With 0.3 seconds to go, she missed on purpose to give her team a chance to get a tip-in and go to overtime,” Leth said. “Cheyenne secured the rebound, but we just ran out of time.” The Lady Highclimbers (315 as of Feb. 5) played their final game last night at Wilson.

Senior swimmer earns wild card entry to districts Dalton Green, a senior on the Shelton boys’ swim team, earned a wild card entry to the 3A West Central District III Championship last week. At the Coaches’ Challenge meet Friday at Foss, Green swam the 200yard individual medley with a personal best time of 2 minutes, 30.14 seconds, fast enough to earn the wild card entry. Green also dropped more than three seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning a personal best at 1:18.17. “More than half of our swimmers came out with personal records,” cohead coach Chad Youngquist said. The meet was a last-chance meet

for swimmers to qualify for districts or the 3A WIAA State Championship. Sophomore Jason Apple also earned a personal best in the breaststroke with a time of 1:18.77. Youngquist said sophomore Levi Vance’s 50-yard freestyle time was a huge drop. He swam the event in 25.09 seconds. “He might’ve earned a spot on the 200-yard relay with that time,” Youngquist added. Senior Luke Fiedler dropped one full second in the 100-yard freestyle to 1:00.58. Finally, senior Sean Kealy earned a district-qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.87. He is not swimming the event at districts, Youngquist said. The district championship is at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow and 5 p.m. Saturday at Hazen High School in Renton.

SHS boys’ basketball drops 2 to league teams The Shelton boys’ basketball team struggled against two 3A Narrows League opponents last week. On Feb. 5, Lincoln defeated the Highclimbers 70-30 in Tacoma. “They just beat us shooting, rebounding and won the turnover battle in the first half,” head coach Del Sandberg said. The highlight of the game was winning the third quarter, he added. Shelton outscored Lincoln 13-7 in the third. Junior Tyler Speaks led the Highclimbers with eight points. The Highclimbers then lost their senior night game 79-48 against Foss on Friday at home. “Foss is very athletic and quick and we couldn’t match them,” Sandberg said. “They won the battle of the boards

and after the first quarter, they started to hit their shots.” Seniors Andrew Quantz and Colby Fuller led the Highclimbers with eight points each.

Knight Owls fall to Lake Quinault The Mary M. Knight boys’ basketball team couldn’t keep up with Lake Quinault on Friday night. Lake Quinault defeated the Knight Owls 44-34 in Lake Quinault. Paul Werly led the Knight Owls with 12 points. Three boys — Austin Thompson, Austin Renecker and Adam Pais — scored six points each. James Anderson contributed five points. n Compiled by reporter Emily Hanson

Shelton boys 2nd at powerlifting meet Three Highclimbers win weight classes By EMILY HANSON

“They are catching on fast, both the boys and the girls, so I think they will be ready by the end of the season.”

emily@masoncounty.com

Kris Woods set a goal of lifting 1,215 pounds at Shelton’s second powerlifting meet of the season. And he met it. On Saturday, Woods not only lifted his goal weight, but he also qualified for the High School National Powerlifting meet by exceeding the minimum total of 1,190 pounds for the 181-pound weight division he competes in. With his total lift, Woods won his weight division, contributing to the Shelton boys’ team’s overall second place finish. The Highclimbers scored 44 points to finish behind Montesano with 54 points. Woods joins teammate senior Jayden Micas in qualifying for nationals. Micas lifted 905 pounds in the 132-pound weight division at the White River meet last month to qualify for nationals. The minimum needed for his weight division was 875 pounds. After the squat press Saturday, Woods said his lift of 435 pounds was right where he wanted to be, but Micas was unable to meet his squat goal.

Shelton senior Kris Woods serves as the spotter for teammate senior Nolan Coker on Saturday at the Northwest Christian High School powerlifting meet in Lacey. Both competed at 181 pounds. Woods won the weight division with a total lift of 1,215 pounds, while Coker took 10th, lifting 820 pounds. “I wanted to lift 340 pounds,” Micas said. “I missed my opener. It hopped off my back because I went up with so much power.” Despite missing his squat goal, Micas still won his weight division with a total lift of 940 pounds. Senior Hunter Ostenson also won his weight divison.

He competed at 242 pounds with a total lift of 1,365 pounds. This was also the most weight anyone at the competition lifted. “I thought the team competed very well,” head coach Lorna Martinson said. “We had a lot of personal bests on Saturday.” She said she was excited

about the new lifters on the team. “They are catching on fast, both the boys and the girls, so I think they will be ready by the end of the season,” Martinson added. “They have caught the powerlifting ‘bug’ to compete in lifting. It will be an exciting spring for us.” The Shelton girls finished

the meet in fifth place with 11 points. Martinson said all three Shelton girls at the competition were first-year lifters. In addition to winning their weight classes, Micas, Woods and Ostenson finished second, third and eighth on the overall lifters list. Senior Daniel Diaz was the 10th lifter on the list with a total lift of 1,285 pounds in the 220-pound weight division. The team’s next competition is March 1 at North Beach High School in Ocean Shores.

“Gill wrestled an excellent tournament,” Lacy said. “We are hoping for a rematch of the finals next weekend. Some tactical adjustments will make a big difference.” Lacy said Salisbury was excited to reach the championship bout for the first time in his career. “Chase was dominant in all of his matches, including the final,” Lacy added. “A little more technical focus in the finals would have led to Chase’s first league championship.” This was Olivas’ first tournament after nearly a monthlong break because of a back injury. “Benny wrestled great in the neutral position,” Lacy said. “Several small adjustments in his mat wrestling will lead to big wins over the next two weekends.” Finally, Lacy said Gaspar came back to the team with a vengeance after being out of competition since the middle of December. “Every match he wrestled was close and tough,” Lacy said. “He had opportunities to win in the finals but came up just a little short.” Gaspar competed in three matches. His opponents of those matches took first, third and fourth. “It was a great tournament for Hector,” Lacy said. The top four wrestlers will advance to Mat Classic XXVI, the WIAA State Championship wrestling tournament Feb. 21 and 22 at the Tacoma Dome.

Lauren Dierkop added seven points and had 13 rebounds. Sowle scored six points and Snyder contributed three points. The Lady Owls ended their week with a 50-48 victory Fri-

North Mason head girls’ basketball coach Dave Hawkins talks to the team Friday night during its senior night home game against Klahowya.

Continued from page B-2 Shelton may have lost senior night to Lincoln 52-31, but the Lady Highclimbers won the physical physical element of the game, according to what the Lincoln coach told Leth after the game. The second half was particularly well played. Shelton was outscored 15-10 in the third quarter and only 10-9 in the fourth. This may seem like a moot point now that basketball season is over, but spring sports start in just a few weeks. I’d like to see more fans out to support the efforts of their classmates. And here’s something to keep in mind: At the beginning of this football season, Russell Wilson asked the Seattle Seahawks: “Why not us?” Perhaps if Shelton fans asked themselves that about their own teams, those teams could find more success.

day at Lake Quinault. “We started out the game a little sluggish on offense and very timid,” Valley said. “Lake Quinault came out in a very aggressive man-to-man defense and we were a little shocked.” He said Mary M. Knight’s defense kept the team in the game in the first half. At halftime, the game was

tied at 18 points. “In the second half, we started being more aggressive with the ball and attacking the basket,” Valley said. “Our offense woke up the second half, but our defense had a little letdown. We have to be more consistent with our play on offense and defense.” He said Lake Quinault killed

the Lady Owls on rebounds. Kiliz made two free throws to seal the victory for Mary M. Knight. Snyder led the team with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sowle added 11 points and had seven rebounds, eight steals and six assists. Adsero and Kiliz scored nine points each.

LADY BULLDOGS Continued from page B-1

North Mason freshman Lacey Stark guards Klahowya senior Marina Hartford on Friday during the Lady Bulldogs’ senior night home game.

“Klahowya got down a couple points in the fourth quarter and the more we slowed the game down, the more we were able to get buckets and the more Klahowya struggled,” Hawkins said. A driving force of the Lady Bulldogs’ victory came from junior Mikaela Shumaker. She led the team with 16 points and eight steals. She scored at least six points off of steals. “They had nobody who could cover Mikaela. We’ve been trying to get Mikaela to finish on steals,” Hawkins said. “It was really nice to see her get blasted, score the layup and then get the foul shot and realize she wasn’t hurt.” The biggest moment of the game, Hawkins said, came from junior Quincy Satran late in the game. “I thought Quincy Satran really came out on top,” Hawkins said. “She hit a big 3 in the fourth to put us up by seven. That really broke Klahowya’s backs.” Satran netted 10 points. The victory came three

nights after Kingston defeated the Lady Bulldogs 61-29. “We started the game a bit depleted with three or four girls being ill and we were unable to get things going,” Hawkins said. “Kingston is one of the top teams in the 2A Olympic League and we couldn’t play anything but our best to be in the game and we didn’t.” Shumaker led with 10 points while Satran scored nine. Friday night, Hawkins said he spoke with Shumaker after the loss to Kingston. “One of the things she said was that she was really looking forward to next season,” Hawkins said. “She said she couldn’t see the team improve over time last season, but that she sees it this year.” He called Shumaker and Satran the backbone of the Lady Bulldogs’ team, adding that freshman Lacey Stark, Jaden Left and Sydney Garrett play like older athletes. “I’m really proud of these girls,” Hawkins said. “It’s a long, hard year when you’re not winning, but they played hard and practiced hard right up to the last minute.” The Lady Bulldogs finished their season with a 2-17 record.

Big Tent Coalition touts benefits of outdoor recreation STAFF REPORT news@masoncounty.com

Gov. Jay Inslee will join a group of businesses, nonprofit groups and public agencies in Olympia this week to highlight the message that outdoor recreation is an economic powerhouse that generates billions of dollars in business and tax revenue throughout the state. Almost three dozen Washington forprofit, nonprofit and government organizations, known as The Big Tent Outdoor Coalition, have scheduled several events today, in the lobby of the Natural Resources Building (NRB), 1111 Washington St. SE, to focus on the importance of outdoor recreation. State agency participants will include the departments of Fish & Wildlife and Natural Resources, the Recreation and Conservation Office, and the State Parks and Recreation Commission. At 11:15 a.m., Inslee, several legislators and state agency leaders are scheduled to share their perspectives on the importance of the outdoor recreation sector to Washington’s economy and quality of life. Inslee is expected to announce an initiative to promote the outdoor recreation and tourism sectors and to get more young people and families involved in outdoor activities. Other activities will include informational displays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the NRB, where the public and policymakers will have the opportunity to visit with representatives of several recreation groups and agencies. Later, coalition members will meet with legislators before attending a reception at the Governor’s Mansion, hosted by the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition (WWRC). “The Big Tent coalition is committed to raising public awareness about

mercial fisheries in years of high abundance. n Structure commercial seasons so that recreational anglers have at least three consecutive days per week to fish when no commercial fisheries take place. n Focus commercial fisheries on coho and chum salmon when harvestable numbers of fish exist. Since October, WDFW has had eight public meetings in Grays Harbor County to encourage public involvement in the development of the policy. More than 350 written comments were received on the draft policy during that time. State fishery managers expect to post the final text of the new Grays Harbor Salmon Management Policy on WDFW’s website by mid-February. In other business, the commission approved an updated policy for lower Columbia River sturgeon fisheries that includes technical amendments to the version approved in 2011 and extends the policy through 2018. Updates to the policy do not affect the closure of retention fishing for sturgeon below Bonneville Dam due to conservation concerns. That closure remains in effect until further notice. The commission also approved a proposal by WDFW to purchase 2 acres of uplands and tidelands at Lynch Cove in Mason County, where the department plans to provide parking and access to waterfowl hunting on Hood Canal. The project will also provide a migratory pathway for juvenile summer chum and chinook salmon, and preserve habitat for shellfish, shorebirds and waterfowl.

the incredible benefits that outdoor recreation brings to our state and its residents,” said Doug Levy, a spokesman for the coalition who represents statewide parks, recreation and boating organizations. “The Outdoor Industry Association last year reported that Washington ranks sixth nationally in the number of outdoor recreation jobs, and that nearly two-thirds of Washingtonians participate in outdoor recreation each year.” The study concluded that $22.5 billion is spent annually in Washington on outdoor recreation, supporting 227,600 jobs and generating $1.6 billion in state and local tax revenue. Outdoor advocates said the impact is actually greater, since the study did not include equestrian, sailing and diving activities, all of which generate significant economic activity in the state. Jobs in the outdoor recreation sector include outdoor gear and apparel design and sales, lodging and transportation, and guiding and outfitting services. “We are delighted that Governor Inslee is highlighting the broad business and social benefits of outdoor recreation. The sector is among the state’s biggest contributors to economic, community and personal health,” said Marc Berejka, who directs REI’s government and community engagement. “We look forward to working with the governor and others to find ways to better support the people, communities and entrepreneurs who help make Washington one of the best states in the country for outdoor recreation.” The recreation economic report and fact sheets on each state are available on the Outdoor Industry Association’s website at outdoorindustry.org/recreationeconomy.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a new Grays Harbor salmon-management policy designed to conserve wild salmon runs and clarify catch guidelines for sport and commercial fisheries in the bay. The commission, a citizen panel appointed by the governor to set policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), approved the new policy Feb. 8 during a public meeting in Tumwater. Miranda Wecker, commission chair, said the new policy provides clear direction to make conservation of wild salmon the first priority for fishery management in the harbor. “Most importantly, this policy sends a strong and unmistakable signal about the importance of meeting our conservation objectives, even if that means seriously reining in both sport and commercial fisheries,” Wecker said. “It also represents a fair accommodation for both fisheries when harvestable numbers of fish are present.” The new policy includes provisions for state-managed fisheries that: n Limit the total catch of wild chinook salmon to a maximum of 5 percent of the adult return — if established spawning goals have not been met in three out of the previous five years. n Prioritize the recreational fishery in allocating the chinook salmon catch between commercial and recreational users. n Allow an increase in the base allocation of chinook salmon for com-
